G8 Supports Israel, Rocket Fire Continues

    Updated: 11am By Tamar Edry
    Jerusalem

Hizbullah leader, Hassan Nassrallah spoke Sunday evening from his bunker in Beirut. Despite an attempt to drum up strength, the terror leader appeared tired and broken; Hizbullah drawing little support from the international community.
The G8 summit in St. Petersburg, was highly critical of Hizbullah for its escalation of Mideast tension, and expressed support for Israel warning Hizbullah, Israeli military operations should only cease on the release of the two abducted soldiers and the cessation of rocket attacks on northern Israel.
Katyusha rockets continued to fall on northern Israel Sunday night and Monday morning reaching the center of the Galilee and the city of Nazareth. Residents of the area were instructed to enter bomb shelters until further notice.
Earlier Monday morning, the army Radio reported IDF officials stated Katyusha strikes on Afula, Upper Nazareth, Migdal Ha'emek, and Givat Ela shortly after 11pm Sunday were aimed at the Ramat David Air Force Base.

In the south of the country, residents also found themselves under attack by Kassam rockets fired from the Gaza Strip. Two people were lightly wounded by shrapnel when a Kassam landed in the courtyard of a Sderot apartment building. The building itself also sustained damage.

In total 24 Israeli soldiers and citizens have been killed since Wednesday with a further 408 wounded. Lebanese officials have reported 148 fatalities since the conflict began.

Arab Media: IAF Aircraft Down, IDF: Leaflet Container
    Arutz Sheva - IsraelNationalNews ^ | 7/17/6 | Hana Levi Julian

Israel Defense Forces officials said Monday afternoon that Arab media reports that an Israeli aircraft crashed over Lebanon were false.

The Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation, monitored in Israel, reported an Israeli plane had gone down, showing video of a flaming object falling from the skies. Two Arab news networks reported on Monday that an Israeli fighter jet was shot down over Beirut as it flew a sortie over the area. Al-Jazeera news network and al-Manar TV, the Hizbullah controlled television station, both reported that Hizbullah terrorists shot down the aircraft.

A Lebanese source confirmed the IDF response, saying that it was “some type of object” but was certain it was not an aircraft. According to a reporter on Army Radio, the explosion that followed the crash resulted in a “huge blaze”.

Defense Minister Amir Peretz told members of the Labor faction that “the chances that an aircraft or IDF aircraft parts crashed over Lebanon is very small.”

Various media reports identified the object as a “type of balloon”, according to Lebanese sources, a “leaflet container” according to the IDF or a “surface to air missile”, according to Hizbullah.

The IAF spokesman added that the leaflet container was hit by a surface-to-air missile fired by Hizbulla and that the container accidentally scored a direct hit on a truck carrying a Katyusha launcher. He added that it appeared that one of the missiles bounced out of truck as a result of the impact and was launched in the direction of Beirut.

    Iran Focus

Tehran, Iran, Jul. 17 – Iran’s hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Sunday that Israel should exchange key Hezbollah leaders it has in custody for its army personnel taken hostage by the Lebanese militia fiercely loyal to Tehran.

“This occupying regime (Israel) came into existence in the heart of the Islamic world and the Middle East 60 to 70 years ago with plots and ruses and has no duty other than terror, crimes, aggression, violence, and creating tension. Its mission is to sow discord among countries in the region”, Ahmadinejad said.

He accused the United States of lying that it sought a two state solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict.

He urged the West to remove the Jewish state from the region. “For certain, you cannot withstand the power of the nations of the region”, he said.

“If you do not contain this criminal regime and end your support for it and give a positive response to the people of the region you will face a dire fate”, he said.

His comments were reported by the state-run news agency ISNA.

    Iran Focus

Tehran, Iran, Jul. 17 – The Supreme Commandant of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps described the United States, Britain, and Israel as an “axis of evil”.

“Today, the global axis of evil – the U.S., the Zionists, and Britain – are showing their true colours of world devouring and exploitation through their occupation and the killing of defenceless people”, Major General Yahya Rahim Safavi said on Sunday. His remarks were reported by the state-run news agency ISNA.

“The problem of the usurper regime of Israel is that it is facing a powerful and invisible army called the Islamic resistance Hezbollah of Lebanon. It is better if the Zionists end their attacks on the Gaza Strip and against Lebanon and release Palestinian and Lebanese prisoners to reach a ceasefire before they face a disgraceful defeat”, Safavi said.

He accused the U.S. of giving Israel a green light to carry out military attacks in Lebanon. “The U.S. created this event to cover up its defeat in Afghanistan and Iraq”, he said.

Safavi added that the fate of the “Middle East, Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Iran are intertwined from a political, security, and economic standpoint”.

    BBC News

The Iranian foreign minister has held talks in Damascus with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.

The meeting comes after Tehran threatened "unimaginable damage" to Israel if it attacked Syria.

Iran has denied Israeli allegations that it supplied missiles to the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

Syria and Iran are close allies. Both support Hezbollah, whose capture of two Israeli soldiers provoked the current crisis in the Middle East.

No word has emerged about the content of the discussions between the Syrian president and Iranian foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki.

The talks come after a fifth night of Israeli air strikes on Lebanon, in response to a Hezbollah attack in which the two soldiers were seized and eight more died.

    Strong defence

Hezbollah has been firing barrages of rockets into Israel from southern Lebanon, striking towns deeper into Israel than it was previously thought capable of hitting.

The BBC's Jonathan Marcus says Hezbollah has an unknown quantity of longer-range systems in its arsenal, most of which are Iranian-made.

But Iran has denied supplying missiles or personnel to the militant group, saying it only gives it political support.

Syria and Lebanon are under pressure from the United States and Europe to use their influence to reign in Hezbollah.

But leaders in both countries have strongly defended Hezbollah's actions.

Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said in a speech on Sunday that Hezbollah would not be disarmed.

He described Israel as an "evil and cancerous being".

The BBC's Heba Saleh in Damascus says Iran and Syria have a strong strategic alliance, based on what they see as their resistance to America's attempts to impose its agenda on the region.

Diplomats in Syria say the country feels strengthened by Tehran's support and knows that the US would want to prevent a wider conflict involving Iran, our correspondent says.

Israeli Warplanes Keep Up Lebanon Barrage
    Jul 17 11:37 AM US/Eastern

By HAMZA HENDAWI and LEE KEATH
    Associated Press Writers

    BEIRUT, Lebanon

Israeli warplanes pummeled Lebanese infrastructure Monday, killing at least 17 people. Hezbollah patron Iran said a cease-fire and a prisoner swap were possible, and the international community signaled willingness to send peacekeepers to back a diplomatic solution.

A senior official in the Israeli government said Monday that the country would agree to a cease-fire against Hezbollah if the Lebanese guerrillas withdraw from the border area with Israel and release two captured Israeli soldiers.

The official, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the diplomacy, said Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert had conveyed Israel's position to Italy's prime minister, who is trying to broker a cease-fire deal.

Hezbollah, meanwhile, fired rockets that flew farther into Israel than ever before, while Israel said it had briefly sent ground forces into southern Lebanon for the first time in its six-day-old offensive in escalating violence.

Western leaders stepped up efforts on the diplomatic front, with British Prime Minister Tony Blair and U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan calling for the deployment of international forces to southern Lebanon. President Bush bluntly expressed his frustration with the actions of Hezbollah, suggesting Syria could use its influence with the guerrillas.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow would consider contributing troops, and the European Union announced it was weighing a peacekeeping force as well.

Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said a cease-fire and a prisoner swap would be "an acceptable and fair" deal to resolve the conflict.

"In fact, there can be a cease-fire followed by a prisoner swap," he said after talks with Syrian Vice President Farouk al-Sharaa.

On Sunday, Lebanese officials said Israel had sent the terms of a possible cease-fire through Italian mediators. The terms were the release of two captured Israeli soldiers, and a Hezbollah pullback to roughly 20 miles from the Israeli-Lebanese border.

Iran and Syria are the principal sponsors of Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group that provoked the current fighting when its guerrillas crossed into northern Israel last Wednesday and captured two Israeli soldiers.

Katyusha rockets landed in the town of Atlit, about 35 miles south of the border and some five miles south of the port city of Haifa. Nobody was hurt in that attack, which came a day after Hezbollah rockets killed eight people in Haifa, making that Hezbollah's deadliest assault on Israel.

Hezbollah guerrillas also fired three rounds of rockets at Haifa on Monday, with one destroying a three-story building and wounding at least two people, Israeli medics said, adding that other victims could be trapped in the rubble.

A Lebanese TV station showed video of an object falling to the ground in the Jamjour district near the Hezbollah stronghold of southern Beirut, but the Israeli army said reports that it was an Israeli aircraft were false.

Israeli planes and artillery guns killed 17 people and wounded at least 53 others in overnight attacks against Lebanon, Lebanese security officials said as the death toll from the conflict rose to more than 200 _ 196 in Lebanon, according to the officials, and 24 in Israel.

Israel said its planes and artillery struck 60 targets in Lebanon overnight as its military responded to the barrage of 20 rockets on Haifa, the country's third-largest city, and one that had not been hit before the current round of fighting began July 12.

Government spokesman Asaf Shariv said Israeli ground troops entered southern Lebanon to attack Hezbollah bases on the border, but rapidly returned to Israel after conducting their military operations.

Israel also kept up pressure in the Gaza Strip as it searched for a captured soldier, bombing the empty Palestinian Foreign Ministry building for the second time in less than a week in what it said was a warning to the ruling Hamas party.

Israel launched the offensive on June 25 after Hamas-linked militants carried out a cross-border attack on a military outpost, killing two soldiers and capturing one other. Lebanon's Hezbollah guerrillas joined the fray last week, attacking a military patrol in northern Israel, killing eight soldiers and capturing two others.

Israeli officials accused Syria and Iran of providing Lebanese guerrillas with sophisticated weapons, saying the missiles that hit Haifa had greater range and heavier warheads than those Hezbollah had fired before.

Speaking on the margin of the Group of Eight summit in St. Petersburg, Russia, Blair said the fighting would not stop until the conditions for a cease-fire were created.

"The only way is if we have a deployment of international forces that can stop bombardment coming into Israel," he said.

Annan appealed to Israel to spare civilian lives and infrastructure. The G-8 nations, who had struggled to reach a consensus on the escalating warfare between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon, have expressed concern on the "rising civilian casualties" and urged both sides to stop the violence.

Bush expressed his frustration in a discussion with Blair before the G-8 leaders began their final lunch.

"See the irony is that what they need to do is get Syria to get Hezbollah to stop doing this s--- and it's over," Bush said. He also suggested that Annan call Syrian President Bashar Assad to "make something happen."

Foreigners continued to flee and several nations drew up plans to get their citizens out. Russia sent an airliner to Jordan on Monday, and Britain also airlifted 40 of its citizens from Lebanon over the weekend and another group was taken out on Monday. A French ship was due to arrive in the port later Monday to evacuate Europeans.

In their raids on Beirut Monday, Israeli planes killed two people in the harbor and started a large fire that was later extinguished.

The Israeli jets also set fire to a gas storage tank in the northern neighborhood of Dawra and another fuel storage tank at Beirut airport, sending plumes of smoke billowing into the sky. The airport has been closed since Thursday, when Israeli jets blasted its runways.

Israeli missiles also blasted southern Beirut, causing three explosions that shook the city. The targets were not immediately clear, but Hezbollah has a host of offices, clinics, schools, social clubs and the homes of its leaders in the southern suburbs.

Elsewhere in Lebanon, Israeli planes again hit the Beirut to Damascus highway, which has been targeted as part of a strategy of severing Lebanon's links to the outside world. Monday's attacks struck the highway in the eastern Bekaa Valley and killed two people.

In another attack, eight Lebanese soldiers were killed when Israeli aircraft attacked a small fishing port at Abdeh in northern Lebanon near a highway leading to Syria. Witnesses and security officials said 12 Lebanese soldiers were wounded in the attack.

The Israeli military warned residents of south Lebanon to flee, promising heavy retaliation after the Haifa assault.

In one airstrike on southern Lebanon early Monday, an Israeli missile missed its apparent target _ a Hezbollah site _ and hit a private house, killing two people, according to security officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Iranian Foreign Minister: Cease-Fire, Prisoner Swap Would Be Fair
    Fox News ^ | 7/17/06 | AP

DAMASCUS, Syria — Iran's foreign minister said Monday that a cease-fire and an exchange of prisoners would be acceptable and fair in the Israeli-Lebanese conflict.

Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki was speaking after talks with Syrian Vice-President Farouk al-Sharaa.

"We believe that we should think of an acceptable and fair [deal] to resolve this," he said. "In fact, there can be a cease-fire followed by a prisoner swap."

On Sunday, Lebanese officials said that Israel had sent the terms of a possible cease-fire through Italian mediators. The terms were the release of two captured Israeli soldiers, and a Hezbollah pullback to roughly 20 miles from the Israeli-Lebanese border.

    Mottaki did not take questions.

"The circumstances prevailing in the region are not in the interests of the Zionist entity," he said, referring to Israel. "The attack launched by Israel was orchestrated."

Iran and Syria are the principal sponsors of Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group that provoked the current fighting when its guerrillas crossed into northern Israel last Wednesday and kidnapped two Israeli soldiers.

    Harper: Mideast escalation 'inevitable'
Canadian Press via Sun Media ^ | 2006-07-17

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (CP) - Thousands of stranded Canadians should be able to start getting out of war-torn Lebanon by mid-week, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Monday.

Speaking as the Group of Eight summit wound up, Harper also offered his condolences to the families of seven Canadians killed in an Israeli bombing raid in Lebanon, but said he was not going to be critical of Israel for defending itself.

Harper began his closing news conference with a reference to Sunday's "tragic deaths of Canadians in Lebanon."

"I want to offer my condolences to their families," the prime minister said.

The seven, from Montreal, had been visiting their families for the summer and were among dozens of civilians killed in Israeli air strikes over the last week.

Israel began bombarding Lebanon after Hezbollah guerrillas crossed into Lebanon and captured two Israeli soldiers. It wants to swap the soldiers for Hezbollah members held by Israel.

Harper said it was those kidnappings that started the conflict and that once a war starts escalation is "inevitable."

The Foreign Affairs Department in Ottawa announced Sunday that it was sending commercial ships to the region to pick up any Canadians who want to get out of the escalating violence between Israel and Lebanon.

Some 40,000 Canadians are believed trapped in Lebanon and Ottawa has been sharply criticized by relatives of the dead who complain Canadian officials had not done enough in the crisis.

"We expect to be able to evacuate people by mid-week," Harper said Monday. "We're in line with the Americans and British on that and we are working very closely with them on evacuation."

Meanwhile, Harper again refused to criticize Israel or question its use of force.

Last week, en route to Europe for his first major international conference, the prime minister called Israel's military reaction to the kidnapping of three soldiers "measured."

"I think our evaluation of the situation has been accurate," Harper insisted again Monday. "Obviously there's been an ongoing escalation and, frankly, ongoing escalation is inevitable once conflict begins."

Neither Harper nor his officials have contacted Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

"We are not going to give in to the temptation of some to single out Israel, which was the victim of the initial attack," said Harper.

Lebanon: countries of the EU "ready to take part" in an international force

BRUSSELS - the Member States of the European Union "are ready to take part" in an international force which could be deployed in Lebanon, but this force reaches yet only the stage of "the idea", declared Monday the presidency Finnish of the EU.

"I am trustful that the EU, which contributed to many missions in the past, will be ready to take part in it", declared the Minister Finnish for the Affairs Foreign, Erkki Tuomioja, at the time of a point of press at the end of a meeting of the European Ministers for the Foreign Affairs.

"Our Member States are ready to favorably consider their participation in such a mission", it added, by underlining however that it was at this stage "only one idea". It will return "above all to the United Nations and to the Security Council of UNO to occupy itself of the question".

    Hezbollah's Deadly Arsenal
    DefenseTech.org ^ | 07/14/06 | Defense Tech

For years, the border towns and kibbutzim in the upper Golan section of Israel, near Lebanon and Syria, have been under threat from Katyusha missiles. Cities just a few miles further south -- like Haifa and Tsfat, the crumbling, quiet mountaintop home of Jewish mysticism -- were safe; relying on short-range Katyusha rockets, Lebanese militants had the ability to sew terror only twelve miles into Israel. That changed on Thursday, when Hezbollah launched a new weapon, the Ra'ad rocket, which hit Tsfat and, for the first time, Haifa, 20 miles from the border. 220,000 Israelis stayed in bomb shelters last night to avoid the missiles, Ha'Aretz reports.

The exact make-up and configuration of these weapons is unclear. Some sources call it a modified anti-tank rocket; others a cruise missile. Range estimates vary from 120 to 350 kilometers, or more. One report calls it a 122mm projectile. Hezbollah claims the Iranian-made "rocket is of 333 mm in diameter and has a warhead of 100 kilograms."

Hezbollah's arsenal is likely filled with even deadlier weapons. Israel believes the terrorist group "has missiles that can hit most of Israel, and which could even strike Be'er Sheva [deep in Israel's southern, Negev desert] under optimum conditions," Ha'Aretz notes.

Iran supplied Hezbollah with solid-fuel, Zelzal-2 missiles with a 200-km range, but these are not very accurate, since they do not have a self-guidance system.

The Zelzal-2 missiles, intended to strike broad targets such as communities and cities, are equipped with explosive warheads weighing up to 600 kilograms...

Hezbollah's original Katyusha rockets had a range of 12 kilometers to 22 kilometers. At a later stage, it obtained Iranian Fajar-3 and Fajar-5 rockets, with a range of 45 kilometers and 75 kilometers, respectively. Hezbollah did not use these rockets until the current conflict.

Tel Aviv plans 4-tier, intensifying offensive

    By Abraham Rabinovich
    THE WASHINGTON TIMES
    July 17, 2006

JERUSALEM -- The fierce Israeli attack in Lebanon is part of a carefully orchestrated plan -- not yet half-completed -- that calls for four stages of mounting intensity, culminating in the movement of ground troops into Lebanon, according to Israeli reports.
Military correspondents with access to senior military officials say that in the first stage -- which began shortly after Hezbollah raiders seized two soldiers on Wednesday -- Israeli warplanes attacked missile caches throughout Lebanon, particularly those housing long-range missiles.
Fifty caches, some hidden underground and some in private homes, reportedly were destroyed, a military briefer told reporters yesterday. It is not clear what percentage of the 13,000 missiles known to be in Hezbollah hands that accounts for.
At the same time, artillery pounded Hezbollah positions and command posts from the Israeli side of the border. In this first stage, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) also bombed the Beirut airport and imposed a sea blockade to impress upon the Lebanese government the consequences of failing to stop Hezbollah from attacking Israel from southern Lebanon.
In the second stage, which began early Friday, warplanes attacked the heart of Hezbollah's power, destroying high-rise buildings in southern Beirut that house the organization's command structure and the home of Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah.
Sheik Nasrallah reportedly was trapped for a while in the militia's underground command center when the building above it collapsed, covering the entrance. He apparently was not injured.
The third and fourth stages are secret. However, the operational plan calls for each stage to be more powerful than the previous one, said the correspondents, who appear to have received detailed briefings.
One reported principle is that the targets should be hit in a predetermined order, with no deviation from the plan, in response to specific Hezbollah actions. A constantly expanding "target bank," consisting of hundreds of sites selected by the IDF, is approved at periodic meetings of a Cabinet subcommittee chaired by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.
One of the final stages, presumably, is the entry of ground forces into Lebanon.
If Israel's main objectives -- a halt in the firing of missiles into Israel and a Lebanese government agreement to displace Hezbollah from the border area -- have not been achieved by the end of this week, ground troops will cross the border, according to the sources.
Israel is unenthusiastic about the prospect of getting bogged down again in southern Lebanon as it was for 18 years before its pullout in 2000.
But the head of the IDF operations directorate, Brig. Gen. Gadi Eizenkot, said Saturday that any ground incursion will be limited in time and in the area affected.
Israeli officials say they don't think the international community will force Israel to cease fire before its goals are achieved.

(IsraelNN.com) Prime Minister Ehud Olmert at 7:00pm began a live televised address to the nation in light of the state of warfare on Israel’s northern and southern borders. He spoke from the Knesset podium during a plenum session.

The prime minister stated everything possible was done by Israel to prevent this conflict, including withdrawal to borders recognized by the international community. He added, “our enemies made a mistake, thinking our willingness to pull back and show restraint is a sign of weakness… On both the northern and southern borders, we are situated in compliance with the international community.”

The prime minister stressed the importance of a “strong and stable Lebanese government” to eliminate the terrorist infrastructure. “Iran and Syria continue to “use remote control” referring to their authoritative roles in Lebanon.

Drawing an analogy to the Palestinian Authority (PA), which Israel holds responsible for the safe return of soldier Gilad Shalit, abducted from Kerem Shalom, Lebanon too is responsible for the safe return of soldiers Ehud Goldwasser Eldad Regev, who were abducted from the northern border.

Olmert stated the ongoing military operations will not come to a halt until the soldiers are released, Hizbullah is distanced from Israel’s northern border and the Lebanese army is deployed along southern Lebanon in compliance with UN Resolution 1559.

“…we will search for each position and reach each and every terrorist who seeks to harm Israel… Israel will not agree to live in the shadow of rockets and missiles aimed at her citizens.”

“…there are times when citizens must realize the harsh realties and say ‘no more!’ to terrorists and terror regimes.”

“…there is nothing we want more than peaceful neighbors on our border… but at the same time, we will not permit those who seek to deny our right to live here in our land in peace.”

“…only a nation which knows how to defend its liberty is entitled to those liberties and freedom.”

Mr. Olmert praised the IDF and gave his unwavering confidence regarding the abilities of the various branches of the security forces, soldiers and officers, Shin Bet, Israel Police, Firefighters, EMS personnel and members of the government.

Reciting portions of the Prayer for the State of Israel, the prime minister expressed his hope that the government ministers would be given the wisdom and strength to guide the nation through this difficult period.

Referring to his years as mayor of Jerusalem, the prime minister stated he is well equipped to handle the current situation – not a political novice and a stranger to the challenges facing his administration.

Olmert commented on a conversation he had as mayor with then NYC Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, in which the former NYC mayor commented on how well the residents of the capital endure, how they manage to continue with their daily routines despite the ongoing terror – as is the case regarding northern residents today, whom are enduring daily and round-the-clock rocket attacks, but remain firm in the face of a hostile adversary.

“…we are not conceding and not afraid since our fight is a just one, a fight of every man and nation, a battle for survival.”

The prime minister mentioned some of the Israelis murdered in the Hizbullah rocket attacks during recent days, stating we are fighting on their behalf, for our right to live in peace, free, in the Jewish Home Land.

“…we will not apologize for our desire to live a normal life as free individuals and we will not request permission from anyone for our desire to protect that right, to defend ourselves.”

Mr. Olmert referred to the three hostage soldiers being held by Hamas and Hizbullah, mentioning a meeting with Aviva and Noam Shalit, Gilad’s parents. When they left his office, Noam gave the prime minister his last photo taken of Gilad – and today, the photos of all three remain on his desk, as he glances at them daily as he works in his office, reminded of the mission – to obtain their release from terrorist hands.

“We will do everything in our power to ensure their safe release and bring them back home…There is almost no one who is capable of understanding where you are,” referring to the parents of the three soldiers, “and I give you a hug and strengthen you.”

The prime minister spoke of his keen awareness regarding the burden he carries, the responsibility towards the soldiers, parents and the nation… stating he will continue tenacious efforts towards achieving Israel’s objectives.

The prime minister concluded his almost 30-minmute address by quoting words from Jeremiah the prophet.

    Can Israel Strike Iran?
Last night, we posted Steven den Beste's interesting email, which agreed with Paul's observation that it would be desirable for Israel to attack Iran, but questioned whether it is logistically feasible for Israel to do so. Paul responded in an update earlier today, and we received an enormous number of emails from readers who had comments on Israel's strategic capabilities, as well as more unorthodox suggestions as to how an attack might be carried out. We can't begin to quote them all but here are a few.
    Froggy Ruminations proposes a plan:
If Israel decides to go after Iran, then that means they will have already begun to go at it with Syria beforehand. They might run a SEAD (suppression of enemy air defenses) package east through Syria as a feint to hit Damascus (which would be a target rich environment anyway) and pull through some heavy airlift assets (C-130s etc) and choose a remote airfield in eastern Syria and seize it Ranger style. If their SEAD is effective, they could set up shop at this airfield, bring in fuel and ammo and mount a sustained bombing campaign against Iranian targets at will. Most of Syria's military forces will be on the other side of the country and if they attempt to go after their FOB, the IAF could hammer them in transit. Besides, the IDF could destroy all roads leading to said airfield, and mine the shit out of the hinterland effectively creating an island out of their new base. Not a simple plan to execute to be sure, but one that could put them in striking distance of Iranian nuke sites. If they could pull off Entebbe in the 1970s, they could do this now.
Jim Johnson rejects den Beste's main premise:
Israel currently has at least 50 F-16Is and over 25 F-15Is all of which are capable of striking Iran with some ease with the use of external conformal fuel fuel tanks. They can do so without even significantly penetrating Iraqi air space if that is an issue. Both aircraft were purchased with Iran in mind - with some joking about the "I" standing for Iran. Both aircraft have a range, fully loaded, of over 2000 km which places virtually all the publicly mentioned high value Iranian targets within range including Tehran. There is even enough margin to allow some loiter time over the targets. The likely ordinance would be the BTU-28 which was purchased in quantity from the US as recently as last year and was designed to be deep earth penetrating. Whether they can penetrate deeply enough to collapse the Iranian structures is not available in the public literature - if known at all. Both aircraft are capable of carrying the BTU-28. And if the need truly arises they can allocate aircraft for one way missions in a number of ways without losing the pilots although these would likely be nuclear missions. Cruise missiles, conventionally armed, are likely to be of limited value directly against hard targets although they could be very useful in pinning down any Iranian attempt to intercept a bombing mission. Most likely though, the Iranians will have very little available to effectively oppose an attack of the type Israel can launch.
It should be kept in mind that an attack of this sort does not have to be a one shot attack - and likely won't be. There will be plenty of time to reload and fire again. *** If the Israeli's can add 3-5 years to the Iranian nuclear program on a static basis that is well worth it - particularly if they extract high additional costs and since they can always do it again.
Other readers suggested a variety of ways in which Israel might effectively strike Iran. John Arcari notes that Iran's dependence on foreign refining capacity is a key weakness:
Israel, or the USA need to be very careful about an attack on Iran, because millions of the Iranian people like Americans, and would overthrow their present government if we just stepped forward and helped them. So, we do not want to devastate the country at large. The weak link in the Iranian economy is an internal shortage of oil to gasoline refining capability. Iran, actually imports huge amounts of gasoline to sustain its economy. My plan is, forget the Nuke problem for the moment, forget the country infrastructure, and forget causing enormous pain to the general population. Here's how! You destroy all oil to gasoline refining capacity, along with destroying the all ability to pump oil in Iran. Actually, this ends the story. These two actions render the country bankrupt overnight, but leave the general population whole to get rid of the present government post haste. Let Iran spend all its money rebuilding that which allows the country to function.
Van Laskey suggests attacking Syria and putting Iran in the position of coming to it's client's defense:
Saddam's chemical arsenal is likely hidden in Syria's Bekaa Valley which is also home to Hezbollah terrorists. *** Iran has stated that Israel attacking Syria will draw them into the conflict. Israel should strike at Bekaa and draw Iran in. Call their bluff. Their army is untested & hasn't fought a war in twenty five years. Its air capability is probably far weaker then the IAF. Its "navy" would be sunk in the first hour. Attack Syria's Bekaa and force Iran to make the first move. Eliminating the cancer in Bekaa is a bonus.
And a number of readers came up with more limited and creative ways of striking at Iran, the most elaborate (some would say far-fetched) of which came from Dafydd ab Hugh.
    Thanks to all who replied.

Hizballah leader Hassan Nassrallah And Top Command Are Holed Up In Hermel, Lebanon
    Debka ^ | 7/17/06

DEBKAfile Exclusive reveals: Hizballah leader Hassan Nassrallah and top command are holed up in Hermel, the northern Lebanese panhandle bordering Syria

July 17, 2006, 11:02 AM (GMT+02:00)Among them, according to DEBKAfile’s military and Iranian sources, are Hizballah’s “chief of staff” Ibrahim Akil, its head of intelligence and terror Imad Mughniyeh and commander of special operations Halil Harab.

The group fled their Beirut HQ Saturday night, July 15, and went to ground in the emergency staff bunkers prepared in advance of their July 12 attack on Israel.

After failing to prevent the top Hizballah leaders’ escape from Beirut, the Israeli air force headed north Monday morning, July 17, and is clobbering the Hermel region.

DEBKAfile adds: The Hermel drug-farming pocket bordered north and east by Syria is the haunt of smugglers who use the remote, strategically placed region to move fighters, weapons, cash and drugs across Syria into Iraq and as a staging post to other parts of the Middle East. The smuggling gangs’ overlord is Mughniyeh, a triple Hizballah-Iran-al Qaeda agent and terrorist executive, who has figured high on the US wanted terrorist list for more than two decades. On his orders, the smugglers recently relocated their main operation from the Syrian-Iraqi border to the Syrian-Lebanese border in preparation for the new warfront against Israel. In the last 48 hours, Iran has used this illicit route to beat the Israeli air, sea and land blockade and pump quantities of rockets, anti-air and anti-tank missiles and other advanced weapons systems to Hizballah for a fresh escalation.

Syria's role in this smuggling operation is critical.

DEBKAfile’s Iranian sources add that the holds of all the Iranian passenger flights landing in Damascus from Thursday, July 13, have been crammed with weapons for Hizballah.

Friday and Saturday, 25 Iranian Revolutionary Guards officers, anti-tank and anti-air missile experts, arrived in mufti in the Syrian capital. They were led by the smugglers across mountain routes into Lebanon. Mughniye, a confidant of Iran's Ali Khamenei and Osama bin Laden, is constantly at Nasrallah’s side. He is believed by Israeli intelligence to have engineered the kidnap of the two Israeli soldiers on which sparked the hostilities July 12.
