Mob of Teens Blamed for Ruining Popular Festival

Cleveland Heights Police were called to the Coventry Arts Fair on Sunday night after a large fight involving dozens of teenagers broke out at Peace Park.

"It just got real wild and crazy," said witness Simone Taylor. "People were running, like, all the way down Coventry, bumping into everybody."

Police believe some of the melee may have been orchestrated by the teens, who had gathered through word of mouth and various social media, for a so-called flash mob.

Chief Jeffrey Robertson told Fox 8, "At about five o'clock, we had an influx of kids here, probably a thousand kids in total."

Business owners are angry that families visiting the fair were forced to take cover or leave for their own protection.

Several arrests were made but merchants said the damage to the reputation of the festival and the neighborhood had already been done.

"Really breaks my heart because we really need people to come here, visit, spend money, support the businesses here," said auto repair shop owner Tom Goodridge. "I think people have a right to be safe when they go visit something."

When some of the people in the crowd became unruly, businesses like Coventry Food Mart decided to close down for several hours.

"They always come in a group, they never come in two or three at a time. They come as many as possible inside, do what they got to do," said owner John Fernando. "If they have to fight you, they will, which they did."

The business owners said they felt that the flash mob was threatening the safety of their legitimate customers and employees.

"I think there should be zero tolerance by the police department because the kids are just getting away with stuff," said Fernando. "You know, families come here to have a good time. Now everybody is going to have second thoughts to come or not."

You reported something that all of us have been talking about for several years.

"More people"? No, not really, they are just being more open about it.

The fact is there are people out there who've awakened to the "change" Obama promised and didn't realize he meant "change for the worse".

I think I have hope that Americans won't allow the country to go so completely socialist we can't ever return from the brink. But, it's getting bleaker and bleaker because the people I still hear who are falling-down-in-adoration of Obama are still there, and still sickening to me.

As much as I thought Reagan was a great man, he was still a man, not a bloody demi-god, and neither is Obama a demi-god. These people need to shit or get off the pot. They need to understand and realize this man is intent on ruining this country.

He's going to make cuts in the budget to the military (and HAS drastically) and Congress will go along with that.

They won't cut welfare and Social Security. And you can bet your ever-lovin' ass if they don't I'm applying for mine at the age of 62 (which they won't change that either I am betting) and getting what I CAN of my money BACK from them.

They will cut military and defense spending, and in some cases they should, but in actual defense material and keeping the planes flying, boats floating and missiles and warheads ready to fly, they'd better not or this country is doomed to become a lower level, third world country with a massive amount of resources China will come after.

We're headed down a deep, dark path that is hidden in a forest of the unknown. Americans who are so intent on keeping Obama in office are the people responsible for the downfall of this country - and somewhere along the way they will discover they did the wrong thing, and it will be too late for all of us.

So- no, more people aren't really coming to grips with it, they are simply standing up more loudly - something they should have done 5 or 6 years ago when we couldn't get Congress to stop the slippery slide on the slope to doom.

What woke me up in 1990 was Ted Turner making the following statements at a broadcasters meeting at his National Press Club in 1989.

Also in late 1989, Turner told the Dallas Morning News that "Christianity is a religion for losers." Christ died on the cross, but Mr. Turner said He shouldn't have bothered. "I don't want anybody to die for me. I've had a few drinks and a few girlfriends and if that's gonna put me in hell, then so be it."

Speaking to a group of broadcasters, he suggested changing the way of dating time from the current BC (Before Christianity, i.e. 380 CE) and AD (Anno Domini, Latin for "in the year of our Lord"). "Why don't we broadcasters make it our goal to get the world at peace by the year 2000?

Let's make it the year zero --BP and AP. Before Peace and After Peace," he said. The broadcasters gave Turner a warm applause accompanied by laughter.

"Your delegates to the United Nations are not as important as the people in this room (broadcasters). We are the ones that determine what the people's attitudes are. It's in our hands," Turner said.

In 1990, Turner was named Humanist of the Year by the American Humanist Association. He told that audience that the death of Jesus in order for our sins to be forgiven was "weird."

Then came the 92 election with George H. Bush, Bill Clinton and Ross Perot.

In my heart I knew the Clinton's would be the worst choice for America and would bring about changes.

Shortly after came Hilary's socialist health care attempt, then Ruby Ridge followed by Waco...rearing the Administrations Draconian Head of what they thought about Conservatives, Christians and Constitutionalists.

Clinton's foreign policy with China was treasonous and after his impeachment he still went after Conservatives and Christians with Project Meggedo.

Being the only one in my family to prep and made fun of before during and after Y2K. Afterward the prepping felt like a dress rehearsal for the future.

Then came GW and Gore and look at what happened in Florida after the election.

Could you imagine 911 with Al Gore at the wheel?

Thankfully GW won a second term and defeated John Kerry.

The Main Stream Media has become openly Socialist and growing hostile toward anything Conservative, Christian and or Capitalist.

They are bordering on violent as they eviscerate any in these groups. Conservative candidates like Sarah Palin and now Michele Bachmann have no chance with the MSM except for possibly Fox, or so I thought.

When I was sitting in a class in the military, lo these many years ago, as a lowly Buck Sgt. the class being some damned "race relations" class, or tolerance thing. I don't recall the name they gave it now, but they were trying to ensure that the white folks would be tolerant of the black folks.

One of the guys teaching the class was going on and on about "humanism" and "it's coming whether you like it or not".

It was actually about the ONLY thing that both groups (black and white) INSTANTLY and vehemently jumped on the guy for.

Both sides, of course, being pretty religious over all.

I'll never forget the look on the guy's face when I told him that "humanism" is for animals and people who don't have any kind of a clue about the world around them.

Teens In A Mob Assault And Rob Center City Patrons

The two young women were sitting at a window table inside the Max Brenner restaurant on 15th Street, near Walnut, sharing chocolate fondue after some shopping.

The streets were vibrant. The weather was nice.

"The city had a good vibe," remembered one of the women, Maria, who requested her full name not be printed.

But their night on the town was about to become frightening.

Heading their way was a pack of teens roving through Center City after leaving a North Philadelphia music festival.

They were part of about 100 or more young people who had left Saturday night's event, police said, committing a series of violent assaults and robberies, including one against Maria, 25, of North Philadelphia, and her cousin Cecilia, 29, of Havertown.

Donta Holdclaw was in the crowd of teens that night. On Tuesday afternoon, he stood on the front step of his mother's North Philadelphia apartment and said the group was bound for South Street.

"They were holding fireworks," he said. "That's what we were going to see."

He had gone to the Susquehanna Community Festival, along Susquehanna Avenue near Broad Street, with his older brother, Aleek Hamilton, 19. Last week, Hamilton graduated from Mastbaum Vocational/Technical High School, with plans to attend college and become a mechanic, said his mother, Letitia Washington. He also was working at a West Philadelphia thrift shop.

Hamilton is now in jail, charged with robbing Cecilia.

Erica Rockymore, 18, of North Philadelphia, was also among the teens, police said. Last week, she graduated from the Philadelphia Electrical and Technology Charter High School, her family said. Her 14-year-old sister asked her to take her to the festival. Rockymore is in jail, too, charged with assaulting Maria.

Maria and Cecilia were enjoying their dessert at Max Brenner, with its large, open bay doors. Afterward, Maria, an interior and industrial designer, had planned to visit a Northern Liberties art exhibit. Cecilia was heading home.

The women had spent the afternoon dress shopping. Maria is getting married soon.

About 10 p.m., Maria said, she saw a shirtless teenager run past the restaurant.

"He was running in the middle of the street and looked like he was running away from someone," she said.

Maria tucked away her phone and wallet, which had been sitting on the table.

She grew up in Brazil, she said, and was more street-smart than her cousin.

Before she could tell Cecilia to put her cell phone away, another teen reached through the window and snatched it.

Maria ran out after him.

She was on the sidewalk, starting to scream "thief," she said, when someone from behind punched her in the jaw.

She said she turned, jaw throbbing, to see the girl who had hit her standing with five other teens. "What are you going to do?" she said the girl who had punched her yelled.

The teens were laughing, she said. "They were fearless. It seemed like they weren't taking anything serious."

Maria ran into another restaurant and called 911.

The girls in the group called her a slut as they left, she said.

The police arrived quickly. Another customer at Max Brenner, a 32-year-old woman from Delaware who was with her 7-year-old daughter, had also been robbed. Someone had reached in through a window and snatched her phone, according to police reports.

"Would you be able to identify them if we find them?" an officer asked Maria, referring to the teens.

Yes, she said.

The three women and the young girl got in the back of a police cruiser.

At 11th and South Streets, they saw the pack. The teens didn't run. "They were laughing," Maria said, "like nothing was happening."

Maria identified Hamilton and Rockymore for police. One of the teens had already sent a text from Cecilia's phone, she said. "Hangin in the da hood," it read.

Terrance Howard, 20, of Frankford, was arrested after being found to have the Delaware woman's phone, police said.

Police are still investigating two other attacks by teens leaving the festival, including one that left a woman hospitalized with a broken leg.

Officials rejected characterizing Saturday's attacks as "flash mob" assaults, because, they said, they had not been coordinated through social media. Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey promised the department would pursue stiff penalties for similar teen violence.

"If they get caught and they get charged, they're going to have a problem," Ramsey said.

Paul Levy, president of the Center City District, called for a zero-tolerance approach.

Maria said Tuesday that her jaw was still sore. She and her fiance had planned to start a family in Philadelphia. She said she still might.

She was more surprised, she said, than frightened.

"I didn't expect something like that in Center City."

Budget Fight Shuts Down Minnesota Government

MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota began what is expected to become the broadest shutdown of state services in its history on Friday, after Republicans and Democrats here failed to agree on how to solve the state’s budget woes in time for the new fiscal year.

And so, as the holiday weekend opened, residents and visitors were finding the state’s parks, historical sites and the Minnesota Zoo closed, new hunting and fishing licenses unavailable, and the state lottery and racetracks shuttered. Most rest areas along highways were closed. Tens of thousands of state employees were being sent home without pay, and contractors were told to walk away from hundreds of road construction projects already under way during Minnesota’s often brief summer building season.



Since early this year, politicians in St. Paul have been locked in a battle over how to solve an expected $5 billion budget deficit under a divided government. Republicans, who took control of both chambers of the Legislature after last year’s elections for the first time in almost four decades, called for limiting spending to the $34 billion that the state expected to take in over the next two years. But Gov. Mark Dayton, who was also elected in 2010, becoming the state’s first Democratic governor in 20 years, called for collecting more in income taxes from the very highest earners to spare cuts in services to Minnesota’s most vulnerable residents.



While intense, private negotiations went on, day after day, as the July 1 deadline approached, it seemed that the argument never really shifted much at all.



“This is a night of deep sorrow for me because I don’t want to see this shutdown occur,” Mr. Dayton told reporters shortly before midnight on Thursday, after a long, especially hot day of on-and-off negotiations between the Democrats and Republicans. “But I think there are basic principles and the well-being of millions of people in Minnesota that would be damaged not just for the next week or whatever long it takes, but the next two years and beyond with these kind of permanent cuts in personal care attendants and home health services and college tuition increases.”



Late into the night, both sides sought to sway public opinion on the shutdown, even as hundreds of protesters demanding a solution to the impasse gathered outside the Capitol. Republican lawmakers, describing themselves as discouraged and disheartened, held what some described as a “sit-in” in their chambers urging the governor to call a special session so some state services might be temporarily kept running, even if negotiations took a bit longer.



Still, the philosophical rift — between holding the line on spending and raising taxes to maintain services for those most in need — seemed only to grow. And both sides pointed to the results of the 2010 election as evidence that voters had demanded their particular approach.



“We’re talking about runaway spending that we can’t afford,” Kurt Zellers, the Republican House speaker, said late Thursday of Mr. Dayton’s ideas. “And we will not saddle our children and grandchildren with mounds of debts with promises for funding levels that will not be there in the future.”



Amy Koch, the Republican Senate majority leader, defended the Republicans’ hold-the-line plans. “This was a balanced budget that did not raise taxes,” she said. “It was good for Minnesota. It was good for Minnesota taxpayers, and it was what the people asked us for way back in November when they elected us in overwhelming historic majorities to the Minnesota House and the Minnesota Senate.”



Under Mr. Dayton’s plan — which he laid out during last fall’s campaign in what some saw then as a politically risky move — the top earners in the state would be asked to pay more in income tax.



“I cannot accept a Minnesota where elderly widows are denied the at-home services that permit them to remain healthy and able to live in their own homes or a Minnesota where local governments have to further slash their firefighters and police forces or a Minnesota where special education is being cut so that millionaires do not have to pay one more dollar in taxes,” said Mr. Dayton, who is a former United States senator and an heir to department stores founded by his family. “That is not Minnesota.”
Numerous states’ new budget years began on Friday, but Minnesota now finds itself in an unwanted spot: the rare state in shutdown, a prospect certain to bring political fallout even as state lawmakers face elections next year.



The only other such budget standoff in Minnesota history came in 2005 under an entirely different set of leaders, including Tim Pawlenty, a former governor who is now seeking the Republican nomination for president. But it involved the shutdown of far fewer services and lasted a matter of days.
That impasse ended after both sides agreed to a new fee for cigarettes. But observers here on Friday said they had trouble envisioning a way that this standoff, in which both sides seem dug in and the size of the financial gap is large, will similarly melt away.



“It’s a very sad day for Minnesota,” said Lawrence R. Jacobs, a political scientist at the University of Minnesota, which will not close. “It’s a state that had a well-earned reputation for being well governed, where, at the end of the day, politics were done in a fair and efficient manner. And it’s now on the cusp of ungovernability. There’s a new ethic here that compromise is weakness.”



The list of state services singled out for closing is long: all sorts of state offices, including licensing agencies and dispatchers in the Twin Cities who monitor traffic jams and accidents and try to keep rush hours moving along. More than 20,000 state employees were expected to be out of work. Certain crucial services will stay open, such as state patrol work, prison operations, courts, and schools.

Thousands of workers face layoffs, road construction is at a standstill and state parks have closed in Minnesota after the state shut down Thursday night because of a political stalemate over the budget. But former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, now a Republican presidential candidate, said the government shutdown could ultimately have a positive impact.
"There's going to be a variety of near-term impacts but the the longer-term goal is most important here," Pawlenty said, referring to government living within its means, KSTP reports.
Pawlenty was governor of Minnesota for eight years until his second term ended in January. In 2005, he presided over a nine-day shutdown, but he speculated last night that the state could have benefited from a longer shutdown.
"I think we would've gotten a better deal had we allowed that to continue for a while," he said from the Minneapolis-St. Paul International airport. To end the shutdown, Pawlenty in 2005 signed a budget deal that included a cigarette tax, or "health impact fee."
Pawlenty blamed Democrats for both the current shutdown and the 2005 shutdown, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. "The equivalence is this -- both in '05 and now, you had Democrats demanding that we raise taxes and raise spending," he said.
Current Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton and Republican legislative leaders started the year facing a $5 billion deficit that economists said Pawlenty left behind. But the former GOP governor said the $5 billion was a "projected deficit," the Star Tribune reports, and had he remained governor, he would have eliminated the spending that led to the deficit.
Current Republicans in the state legislature have called for spending cuts, including deeper reductions in health and welfare spending. Dayton, by contrast, wants to cut the deficit by raising taxes on couples earning more than $300,000 and individuals making more than $180,000. Dayton and some moderate Republicans have said they are open to compromise solutions like eliminating tax breaks or authorizing a casino.

Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner’s potential departure from the administration would force President Barack Obama to assemble a new economic team as he enters a re-election campaign that’s likely to be dominated by voter concern over jobs.
Geithner has told Obama that he’s considering leaving the administration after the president reaches an agreement with Congress to raise the national debt limit, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The Treasury secretary said yesterday that speculation about his departure was being driven by his decision to commute to New York so his son can finish his final year of high school there. He stated his intention to stay, without saying how long.
“I live for this work,” he said at the Clinton Global Initiative in Chicago. “It’s the only thing I’ve ever done. I believe in it. We have a lot of challenges as a country. I’m going to be doing it for the foreseeable future.”
Geithner, 49, won’t make a final decision on whether to leave until the debt-ceiling issue has been resolved, according to another person familiar with the matter. Both people spoke on condition of anonymity to talk about private discussions.
An exit by Geithner would complete the turnover in Obama’s original economic team, with Council of Economic Advisers Chairman Austan Goolsbee scheduled to leave in early August to return to the University of Chicago. It would leave Obama with two key posts to fill as the recovery slows. The unemployment rate rose to 9.1 percent in May, and the economy grew at a 1.9 percent pace in the first quarter, the government reported.
‘New Blood’

Three other top economic advisers already have departed. Goolsbee replaced Christina Romer at the CEA, and National Economic Council Director Lawrence Summers and Office of Management and Budget Director Peter Orszag left the administration last year.
“There is never a good time to leave, but there is also value to bringing new blood into the policymaking process,” said Stephen Myrow, a former Treasury official who’s now with ACG Analytics Inc., a Washington investment research firm.
“If and when Secretary Geithner announces his departure, it will be interesting to see whether the president emphasizes with his replacement financial-sector credentials like he did by choosing William Daley as his chief of staff, or if he focuses primarily on Washington experience and regulatory acumen,” said Myrow.
Needs a Break

Geithner has told associates he needs a break from government service after dealing with the turmoil that followed the collapse of Wall Street firms, including Bear Stearns Cos. and Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc., first as president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and then as Treasury secretary.
Now he’s facing pressure over the debt limit. He has said the U.S. risks defaulting on its obligations if Congress doesn’t raise the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling by Aug. 2. The administration and Republicans in Congress are at an impasse in negotiations over increasing the limit, which is tied to efforts to cut the nation’s long-term deficit.
Moody’s Investors Service said on June 2 that it expects to place the U.S. government’s Aaa credit rating under review for a possible downgrade if there’s no progress on the talks by mid- July. Fitch Ratings said June 21 it would place the U.S. on a negative rating watch if no action is taken by Aug. 2.
“Geithner leaving may raise the level of uncertainty for the direction of economic policy, and that is never a positive thing for the markets and the recovery,” said Christopher Sullivan, who oversees $1.7 billion as chief investment officer at the United Nations Federal Credit Union in New York.
No ‘Shock Value’

Still, he said, it wouldn’t have too much “shock value,” especially if Geithner remains at Treasury until the debt ceiling is settled, “which is the most pressing concern.”
Treasuries fell for a fourth day yesterday as stocks rose and a measure of U.S. business activity improved. The yield on the 10-year note rose five basis points, or 0.05 percentage point, to 3.16 percent at 5:14 p.m. in New York.
Investors may be more interested in who would come after Geithner.
“The question in cases like this is always who will be the replacement,” said Jay Mueller, who manages about $3 billion of bonds at Wells Fargo Capital Management in Milwaukee. “You can’t judge if this is good or bad for the market until you see who follows.”
Investors were “comfortable” with Geithner because he was “a visible player in trying to blunt the crisis,” he said.
Need a CEO

Some Republicans are already urging Obama to select a replacement from the business community.
“What would be smart is to bring a CEO on board,” Senator Rob Portman of Ohio said on Bloomberg Television. “Somebody who’s got business experience. Somebody who, again, understands the important connection between policies and jobs and the economy and the fiscal situation.”
If Geithner does leave, Obama would be losing a member of his economic team who understands Washington institutions and the New York banking world as well as the intricacies of the Chinese economy. Geithner has pressed the Chinese to let their currency appreciate faster to reduce the global imbalances that both he and Obama have blamed for financial uncertainty.
After Obama’s victory in the 2008 election, Geithner had a rocky start in Washington as he faced Senate scrutiny over his failure to pay self-employment tax returns while he worked at the International Monetary Fund. He paid some of the taxes after being audited by the Internal Revenue Service and didn’t pay the rest until it was clear that he would be nominated for the Treasury post, according to the Senate Finance Committee.
Growing Stature

His initial moves to return financial markets to health were rebuffed by Wall Street. On Feb. 10, 2009, when Geithner unveiled a plan to bolster the banking system, the Standard & Poor’s 500 stock index tumbled 4.9 percent. Before the 2010 mid- term elections, then-House Minority Leader John Boehner called on Obama to fire Geithner and other members of the economic team.
As Obama’s presidency progressed, administration officials began to view Geithner as more of a public asset.
“Tim was very influential from day one,” said Romer. “His public persona has just caught up with what has always been true inside the White House.”
Former President Bill Clinton said he didn’t know whether business confidence might be hurt if Geithner leaves.
“What people want is predictability now,” Clinton said in an interview with Bloomberg Television in Chicago. “We’ve absorbed a lot of change, we’ve absorbed a lot of trauma.”
Clinton said he hadn’t heard that the Treasury secretary was considering leaving. Later, while interviewing Geithner, Clinton said told him that staying at Treasury would “be good for America.”
Geithner earned a bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, and a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies in Washington. After graduate school, he worked for three years at a global consulting firm founded by Henry A. Kissinger.

Texas Mayor Warns Residents To 'Bolt Your Doors' After City Lays Off Entire Police Force

Alto, Texas is preparing for a crime wave, after the small East Texas town put its entire police force on furlough, the Wall Street Journal reports today.

In an effort to save money, the city has laid off its police chief and four police officers for six months — longer if Alto's finances don't improve.

In the meantime, the county sheriff's department will take over law enforcement duties for the town of 1,200, according to the AP. The sheriff's department is already responsible for policing the nearby city of Wells, which laid off its sole police officer last year.

Alto residents fear that crime will rise in the absence of a local police force. The town's crime rate is already above the state average; there were 66 crimes in Alto last year, according to the WSJ, compared to 51 the previous year.

"Everybody's talking about 'bolt your doors, buy a gun,'" Alto Mayor Monty Collins told the WSJ.

Across the country, cash-strapped cities like Alto are making public safety cuts in the face of revenue losses and growing personnel costs. Small towns have found that law enforcement is easier to pass off to county or state agencies than other city services.

In Alto, reduced sales and property tax revenue, have tightened the city's budget. City officials project a budget deficit of about $185,000 for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30. The City Council was forced to choose between funding the police department and making much needed repairs on the city-owned natural gas distribution system, which generates most of the city's revenue.
