From his vacation spot at Martha’s Vineyard, President Barack Obama continues to monitor unfolding events in Libya. According to the Daily Mail, after initially declining to comment until all was secure, Obama issued a statement saying that Libya had reached a “tipping point” and that control of the capital was “slipping from the grasp of a tyrant.”
Obama’s comments came as rebel forces poured into Tripoli Sunday, prepared to seize the capital. The president also called on embattled Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi to step down.
“The surest was for the bloodshed to end is simple,” Obama said. “Muammar Gaddafi and his regime need to recognize that their rule has come to an end. Gaddafi needs to acknowledge the reality that he no longer controls Libya. He needs to relinquish power once and for all.”
According to the Mail, the president has been monitoring the situation all weekend at his vacation spot in Martha’s Vineyard. He is expected to hold a series of emergency meetings later in the morning.
The Associated Press reports that Obama then played golf and enjoyed some beach time with his family. It marks the third day of the Obamas’ 10-day summer vacation. The president will return to Washington next Saturday, where he is expected to take the reins on the struggling economy and high joblessness.
