Hot Mic Catches Spokeswoman Slamming Her Own Canned Line Seconds After She Defended It

In order to sell something, you have to believe in it. But unfortunately for State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki, the canned response she was instructed to read regarding Egypt wasn’t enough to convince the reporters covering the press briefing, or even herself.
Because at the very end of the briefing, Psaki made a rookie mistake when she was caught in an awkward hot mic moment, slamming the very line she had seconds before so vigorously defended.
During the briefing, reporters had pressed her to comment on the administration’s response to the recent acquittal of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, when she delivered this line, The Blaze reports.
“Generally, we continue to believe that upholding impartial standards of accountability will advance the political consensus on which Egypt’s long-term stability and economic growth depends,” she said. “But beyond that, I would refer you to the Egyptian government.”
This non-answer was not enough to satisfy the journalists attending the briefing, who peppered her for clarification. AP reporter Matt Lee was unrelenting in his attempt to get a straight answer out of Psaki.
Lee criticized the explanation, telling the spokesperson that her answer “means nothing.”
“It’s like saying, ‘well we support the right of people to breathe.’ That’s great, but if you can’t breathe…” Lee added.
Psaki continued her deflection until the close of the press briefing. As the lights dimmed, a C-SPAN mic caught the frustrated spokeswoman telling a colleague, “That Egypt line is ridiculous,” as the colleague laughs.
If the State Department can’t even convince their spokespeople on their message, do they really expect the American public to buy it, too?
