As police in Massachusetts search for a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings, Connecticut state police are in communication with Massachusetts authorities and are searching all modes of transportation.
An accomplice or associate of the suspect was believed to have taken a train to Connecticut, which appeared to have been stopped and surrounded at East Norwalk, NBC News learned.
Connecticut state police said police stopped a train that was traveling from Boston to Stamford as a precaution, since it was coming from Boston and stopping so close to New York City.
Officials from the Metro-North Railroad Metropolitan Transportation Authority issued a statement saying Amtrak's Acela train #2151 was stopped at 8:22 a.m. in East Norwalk.
The Norwalk police SWAT team and MTA police, searching for a person of interest in the Boston situation, swept the train and the search turned up no results and the train was allowed to proceed at 9:16 a.m.
Metro-North's New Haven Line was suspended in both directions from 8:36 a.m. to 9:16 a.m., and trains are now running with residual delays.
MTA officials said they are increasing patrol coverage andf bag inspections.
State police issued a news release this morning saying they received information from the Boston Investigation that a gray Honda CRV, with Massachusetts license plate 316 ES9 could be occupied by a wanted suspect and issued a bulletin at the request of Massachusetts authorities.
That car has been recovered in Boston, according to Connecticut state police.
Connecticut state troopers are posted strategically in the state and continue to communicate with Massachusetts authorities.

Now... who is shooting at whom we haven't figured out yet. I'm wondering if it is the cops, being jumping and just opening fire on anyone like what happened in LA in the Dorner case.
Kill the suspect ASAP? Shoot to kill order?
He's still on the run.
IF they were shooting at HIM and he got out each time, then he has significant training.

Police going door-to-door in hunt for second marathon bomb suspect
Published April 19, 2013
FoxNews.com
BREAKING NEWS: Police were donning bullet-proof vests and going door-to-door as a perimeter tightened in the Watertown section of Boston, where the second Boston Marathon bomber could be hiding.
Earlier, gunfire was heard in the area, a bullet -riddled SUV was recovered and multiple explosions echoed from inside a house in the area, following a chaotic night of mayhem that included the murder of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer and a shootout with police, authorities said early Friday.
Police believe the two suspects from Monday's terror attack are brothers, Muslims possibly from Chechnya or a nearby region, according to sources who spoke to Fox News. The man on the loose was identified as Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, of Cambridge, Mass. They are believed to have been here for 'several years,' sources said.
Schools are closed, train and bus service is suspended and police were telling residents of neighborhoods including Cambridge, Waltham, Watertown, Newton, Arlington and Belmont to stay indoors. Police have formed a wide perimeter and believe the suspect is on foot, armed and dangerous, inside.
"Suspect No. 1 is dead, Suspect Two is on the run," Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick said at a Friday morning press conference. "There is a massive manhunt underway."
The dead suspect, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, was shot multiple times in a gunfight with police Thursday night and pronounced dead at a hospital. Police also found a car believed to be registered to Tamerlan Tsarnaev in Boston, after earlier issuing a lookout bulletin to Connecticut State police.
Police in Maryland surrounded a home in an upscale suburb Montgomery Village, where the suspects' uncle, Ruslan Tsarni, is believed to live.
The suspects apparently surfaced just hours after the FBI released their imaged late Thursday afternoon, shooting the police officer, robbing a convenience store, carjacking a man who later escaped and engaging in a wild shootout with Boston police, in which they hurled explosives from their stolen car.
Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said on Twitter that one of the two suspects was killed and that the at-large suspect, labeled by the FBI as "suspect two" in the marathon bombing, was "armed and dangerous."
Authorities urged residents in Watertown, Newton, Waltham, Belmont, Cambridge and the Allston-Brighton neighborhoods of Boston to stay indoors. All mass transit was shut down.
"We believe this to be a terrorist," Davis said in a press conference. "We believe this to be a man who's come here to kill people. We need to get him in custody."
The Middlesex district attorney said the two men are suspected of killing the MIT police officer on campus late Thursday, then stealing a car at gunpoint and later releasing its driver unharmed. Hours earlier, police had released photos of the marathon bombing suspects and asked for the public's help finding them.
The suspects threw explosives from the car as police followed it into Watertown, according to the district attorney's news release. The suspects and police exchanged gunfire, and one of the suspects was critically injured and later died early Friday while the other escaped.
During the pursuit, a MBTA transit police officer was seriously injured and transported to the hospital, the news release states. He was identified as Richard H. Donahue Jr., 33, and was being treated at Mt. Auburn Hospital..
Hours earlier, police had released photos of the marathon bombing suspects and asked for the public's help finding them. A new photo of the suspect on the loose was released later showing him in a grey hoodie sweatshirt. It was taken at a 7-Eleven in Cambridge, just across the Charles River from Boston.
A federal law enforcement official told Fox News they are looking into whether the bombing suspects may have been from overseas and had overseas military training.
Dozens of officers and National Guard members descended on Watertown shortly after the shooting outside a building on MIT's campus in Cambridge, according to the Associated Press.
Authorities were calling for somebody to get on the ground and put their hands up and a loud thud was heard after someone shouted "fire in the hole," the news agency reported.
Witnesses told The Associated Press they heard multiple gunshots and explosions at about 1 a.m. Friday. Dozens of police officers and FBI agents were in the neighborhood and a helicopter circled overhead.
State police spokesman David Procopio told news agency, "The incident in Watertown did involve what we believe to be explosive devices possibly, potentially, being used against the police officers."
Doctors at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston where a suspect in the marathon bombings was taken and later died said they treated a man with a possible blast injury and multiple gunshot wounds. They wouldn't say if the patient they treated, who came in with police, was the suspect in the black hat from marathon surveillance footage.
Earlier Friday, Cambridge police and the Middlesex District Attorney's office said the MIT officer was responding to a report of a disturbance when he was shot multiple times late Thursday. He later died at a hospital. His name was not immediately released.
Procopio said the shooting took place about 10:30 p.m. outside an MIT building. The area was cordoned off and surrounded by responding law enforcement agencies, according to a posting on the university's website.
The shooting came little more than three days after the twin bombings on the Boston Marathon that killed three people, wounded more than 180 others and led to an increase in security across the city.

Boston Bomb Suspect's Dad Tells Him to Surrender, Warns ' Hell Will Break Loose' if Son Dies

The father of suspected Boston Marathon bomber called on his son today to give up peacefully, but warned the U.S. that if his son is killed "all hell will break loose."
Anzor Tsarnaev spoke to ABC News from his home in the Russian city of Makhachkala as Boston police carried out an intense dragnet for his son Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, survived a running gun battle with police during the night that left an MIT security officer dead and a Boston cop badly wounded. His older brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, died in the shootout.
The father said he spoke to his sons by phone earlier this week. "We talked about the bombing. I was worried about then," Anzor Tsarnaev said.
He said his sons reassured him, saying, "Everything is good, Daddy. Everything is very good."
The elder Tsarnaev insisted that his sons were innocent, but said he would appeal to his son to "surrender peacefully."
"Give up. Give up. You have a bright future ahead of you. Come home to Russia," the dad said.
The father warned, however, "If they killed him, then all hell would break loose."
"If they kill my second child, I will know that it is an inside job, a hit job. The police are to blame," the father told ABC News. "Someone, some organization is out to get them."
The father said his two daughters, ages 22 and 24, live in New York.
LIVE UPDATES: Boston Bombing Suspect Dead in Shootout
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who is now described as willing to die in a battle with police, was more striking for taking acting classes, advanced placement courses and being a star athlete with lots of friends in high school.
"He never seemed out of the ordinary at all," high school classmate Sierra Schwartz told "Good Morning America" today. "This is not someone who seemed troubled in high school or shy. He was just one of us. It's very weird."
Steven Owens told ABC News, "I met him when I was in seventh grade and he was just a great kid. He was fun to be around. Very studious, very smart. I don't remember a time when he was ever having trouble in school. He was a great athlete. Great to be around."
Owens said Tsarnaev "always had a positive attitude," but had expressed some political opinions in school.
"He always thought the war [Iraq, Afghanistan] was stupid," Owens said. "He didn't enjoy the idea of war. We didn't really talk about it much. The only time it ever really came up was when we were learning about it in school."
When Owens first saw authorities' photos of Tsarnaev, he wasn't positive it was him since he hadn't seen him in a few years.
"I started looking through my yearbook because I thought I recognized him and there he was," Owens said. "I was just so surprised."
Students at UMass Dartmouth are being evacuated from their dorms, following confirmation that Tsarnaev lived in the Pinedale residence hall.
PHOTOS: Boston Bombing Suspect Manhunt
The search for Tsarnaev, 19, of Cambridge, Mass., has effectively shut down Boston and its surrounding cities today, including Watertown, Mass., where his brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed in an overnight shootout.
Boston is on lockdown and police are engaged in a large operation in Watertown.
Law enforcement sources tell ABC News the suspects are believed to be brothers are of Chechen ethnicity and their family came from the semi-autonomous Russian province of Dagestan. A law enforcement source confirmed that at least one of the brothers is a legal permanent resident in the United States.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was born in Kyrgyzstan, a law enforcement source citing State Department documents told ABC News. The brothers are believed to have spent time there.
Schwartz went to Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School with Dzhokhar, who is now the target of a massive police dragnet.
She recognized him immediately when she saw his photo released by authorities.
"I was like, 'Wow, that looks just like Dzhokhar…," she said. She then noticed that his Facebook page had been deleted.
Schwartz knew he went to college, but did not remember where. She last saw him in Cambridge in the summer of 2011 before starting college. She was not aware that he had a brother.
"He was a great athlete. He did well. I think he won a scholarship for it," Schwartz said. "This is very unexpected….this is out of the ordinary. Completely shocking."

"We all knew him for four years and that's something a lot of people can't say," she added.
Tsarnaev's father Anzor Tsarnaev lives in Makhachkala, the capital of Republic of Dagestan.
"My son is a true angel," Anzor Tsarnaev told the Associated Press. "Dzhokhar is a second-year medical student in the U.S. He is such an intelligent boy. We expected him to come on holidays here."
Tamerlan Tsarnaev, identified as Suspect 1, was killed overnight after exchanging fire with police officers, during which multiple explosive devices were detonated, authorities said.
The Monday bombing near the finish line of the Boston Marathon killed three people and injured more than 170.

Who Is Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the Man at the Center of the Boston Manhunt?
http://cdn.theatlanticwire.com/img/u...2-AM/large.jpg FBI
Alexander Abad-Santos 7:54 AM ET
This morning, after a chaotic evening saw his partner in crime (and apparently his older brother) killed and as a city locked down to find him, Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev emerged as the name of the man in the ongoing manhunt in Boston Friday. According to information culled from multiple unconfirmed reports, Tsarnaev is a 19-year-old reportedly from Kyrgyzstan who has been living, for the past year, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Here's everything else we think we know about "Suspect No. 2" — a.k.a. the one in the white hat, the one authorities apparently saw drop a bomb-laden backpack in security footages — as well as his dead brother and apparent accomplice, Tamerlan, based on the flood of (largely unconfirmed) incoming reports coming in from across American news outlets, social media, and across the world:
His name is Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev:
BREAKING: AP: Surviving Boston bomb suspect identified as Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, of Cambridge, Mass. -SS
— The Associated Press (@AP)
April 19, 2013 Based on how reporters are saying his name, it sounds like you pronounce his name like "Joke-Har."
Dzhokar Has Been Living in the U.S. for at least one year:
BREAKING: AP sources: Boston bomb suspects from Russia region near Chechnya, lived in US at least 1 year. -SS
— The Associated Press (@AP)
April 19, 2013 Where's He From?
Pete Williams of NBC News reports that Tsarnaev "entered the United States with family in 2002 or 2003, and that Tamerlan Tsarnaev became a legal permanent resident in 2007." Tsarnaev has a Massachusetts driver's license.
The City of Cambridge awarded "Dzhokhar Tsarnaev" a $2,500 scholarship in 2011, according to Boston.com report. "The city is awarding the $2,500 scholarships to 45 students using contributions from citizens and businesses. About 35 to 45 scholarships are awarded each year, according to the city," reported Boston.com's Brock Parker. Tsarnaev was a senior at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School then. This time frame would make sense if the AP is reporting that Tsarnaev was in the U.S. for at least a year.
http://cdn.theatlanticwire.com/img/u...73_500x242.jpg
Under an alternate spelling of his name, we found a "Djohar Tsarnaev" on Russian Facebook, who lists the Cambridge Rindge and Latin school as the last school he went to — and Boston as his current city.
http://cdn.theatlanticwire.com/img/u...95_625x463.jpg
The age and name match up, with the suspect as well as his school. He was checking in with social media yesterday. You'll also see his world view is "Islam" and personal priorities are "Career and money." One more photo:
http://cdn.theatlanticwire.com/img/u...3/04/19/cc.jpg
This Is Reportedly His Yearbook Picture:
His Dad Says He's a Medical Student and an "Angel"
This is bizarre, but apparently the AP has caught up with Tsarnaev's father who is claiming he's a second-year medical student. "My son is a true angel ... Dzhokhar is a second-year medical student in the U.S. He is such an intelligent boy. We expected him to come on holidays here." the AP reports. Second-year medical students aren't usually 19, and this is the first time that Dzhokhar's career aspirations have been mentioned.
According to ABC News, Tsarnaev's father spoke to them yesterday and asked them if they were hurt in the bombings. Further, Dzhokhar's father urged him to surrender, but that was wrapped in a warning to police:
"Give up.
His Uncle Called Him a Loser
BREAKING: When I told the uncle that one of his nephews was killed in a gunfight with police he said he "deserved it."
#bostonmarathon #wbz
— Peter Wilson (@PetesWire)
April 19, 2013 "Of course we're ashamed," the suspects' uncle Ruslan Tsarni said, saying that the Tsarnaev family received asylum, stating that his family "had nothing to do with them for a long-long time. ... This has nothing to do with Chechnya."
"I just wanted my family [to] be away from them." He added. "I respect this country, I love this country."
Their Aunt Can't Believe Her Nephews Did This
That's what she told The Toronto Sun. Maret Tsarnev said:
My brother’s two boys, they are growing up so fast. My first reaction is, ‘Why the hell would they do this?’ But when I go through all the material, it’s not giving anything … the whole world is now making a decision (on them) now by just seeing these pictures and not having anything else
He Is a Registered Student at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth
UMass Dartmouth is closed today, explaining that a registered student was being sought by police. Buzzfeed Rosie Gray has an interview with Tsarnaev's classmates who say he was a student there.

This Might Be IS NOT His Twitter Account
There are plenty of fake Twitter accounts springing up in the last few hours. But there appears to be a Twitter account using Dzhokhar's picture, that has been active since December 15, 2012 and stopped tweeting on December 27.
Update 10:04 a.m.Even though the Boston Globe and others reported that the account was real, it appears that it's a hoax and someone had changed their avatar.
He May Have Run Over His Own Brother
NBC's Williams says that Dzhokhar ran over his brother to get away from the firefight with police last night.
"I Don't Have a Single American Friend."
A photo essay which people believe profiles Dzhokhar's brother Tamerlan is being passed around the Internet today. We've contacted photojournalist Johannes Hirn, to verify Tamerlan's identity. What matches up is Tamerlan's place of birth (Chechnya), his age, and his name. In the essay, "Will Box for Passport", Tamerlan Tsarnaev said: "I don't have a single American friend, I don't understand them." In another post, Hirn writes: "Tamerlan says he would rather compete for the United States than for Russia."
Tamerlan Appears to Have Posted a Video With an "Extremist Religious Prophecy Associated with Al Qaeda" on YouTube.
A YouTube account believed to be Tamerlan's has surfaced. It matches his name and has been active for over a year:
http://cdn.theatlanticwire.com/img/u...3a_620x126.jpg
Mother Jones's Adam Serwer explains:
Among those videos is one dedicated to the prophecy of the Black Banners of Khurasan which is embraced by Islamic extremists—particularly Al Qaeda. The videos posted on what appears to be Tsarnaev's YouTube page may shed light on the motivations for the attack on the Boston Marathon. The prophecy states that an invincible army will come from the region of "Khurasan," a large portion of territory in central Asia.
Tamerlan Was Reportedly Arrested for Domestic Assault and Battery
"In 2009, Tamerlan was arrested for domestic assault and battery after assaulting his girlfriend," reported Foreign Policy's David Kenner, but its unclear if either brother had a record beyond that.
They Have a "Sister"
The Star Ledger is reporting that they've found someone in West New York who shares the same last name as Dzhokhar and Tamerlan. "They were great people. I never would have expected it. They are smart – I don’t know what’s gotten into them." she said. Dan Goldberg writes "She referred to Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, and his brother Tamerlan, 26, as her own 'brothers.'"
http://cdn.theatlanticwire.com/img/u...cf_300x140.jpg
Tamerlan and Dzhokhar are not Sunil Tripathi. "Sunil Tripathi" was muttered on the police scanner last night. Tripathi is a student at Brown and has been missing since March 16. Because of Sunil's perceived resemblance to the blurry shot, that he's currently missing, and his name being muttered on the police scanner, Sunil is being brought up as a terror suspect. Sunil is not the Boston bombing suspect.
Police are reportedly closing in on Tsarnaev. You can follow along here.

FBI Evidence Photo Shows Boston Bomb Suspect Standing Near Child Later Killed In Marathon Blast
In a chilling image obtained by the FBI, one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects can be seen standing behind the young boy who was http://i.cdn.turner.com/dr/teg/tsg/r...spect2crop.jpgkilled by one of Monday’s terror blasts, The Smoking Gun has learned.
A cropped version of that image (seen at right) was among the photos of suspect #2 that were released this afternoon by federal investigators. The suspect, a male wearing a white baseball cap, is highlighted inside a circle in the FBI evidence photo.
A nearly identical image to the FBI’s source photo shows a group of spectators watching the April 15 race at a sidewalk barricade in front of 775 Boylston Street, where the second bomb was detonated.
The photo, reproduced below, shows suspect #2 lurking several feet away from the metal barricade (and behind a trio of young women). Immediately to the left of the women is Martin Richard, the eight-year-old Dorchester boy who was killed by the explosion. To the child’s right is his seven-year-old sister Jane, who lost a leg in the blast.
The children were at the race cheering on their father, who ran in the marathon. According to the Boston Globe, the Richard family had watched most of the race from a spot several blocks away from the Copley Square finish line. However, after an ice cream break, they moved closer to the end of the course, ending up against the barrier in front of the apartment building at 775 Boylston Street.
The photo of suspect #2 and the Richard children was unearthed by one of the much-maligned online sleuths congregating on a Reddit page devoted to chasing bombing clues. The site habitué highlighted suspect #2, the young victim, and what appears to be a backpack on the sidewalk.

Police Searching Massachusetts Car in Niagara Falls

http://www.wgrz.com/images/640/360/2...gara-falls.jpg
NIAGARA FALLS, NY - Police say 3-4 "suspicious" packages have been removed from the car that was stopped early this morning at 19th and Elmwood in Niagara Falls.
Police would not say why the packages are considered suspicious.
Two people who were in the car are still being questioned and are said to be cooperative.
Residents are being asked to stay away from the area.
The vehicle is a black Nissan with Massachusetts license plates.
Sources early this morning said the two occupants were Russian nationals, but police now say that is not true.
The FBI tells 2 On Your Side they are aware of the situation and that their joint-terrorism task force is assisting the NYSP.
2 On Your Side has a crew on the scene and will have more information as it becomes available.

The lower circle in red appears to be the lighter backpack seen on the guy in the fbi video. It is in the correct spot for the blast.

Report: Turkish brothers detained in Niagara Falls
April 19, 2013 8:46 a.m.
Authorities are interviewing two Turkish brothers who drove into Niagara Falls this morning in a vehicle with Massachusetts plates, the Buffalo News is reporting.
A member of the Air National Guard spotted the two men in the vehicle early this morning and followed them into Niagara Falls where authorities stopped them at Elmwood and 19th Street, police said. A bomb squad was called to the scene, according to the Buffalo News.

A State Police robot now has pulled two backpacks, a pillow and a fourth item out of a Nissan with Massachusetts plates that was stopped by police this morning, in an incident that led law-enforcement officials to interview two brothers of Turkish ancestry who drove into Niagara Falls earlier this morning.
Shortly before 11:30 a.m., the robot started pulling papers out of one of the two backpacks, and some of the papers were blown all over the street. The robot pulled out the two backpacks, the pillow and an object described as possibly a plastic freezer bag filled with items, starting shortly after 11 a.m.
“The state police robot removed some packages from the vehicle, potentially suspicious packages," said Niagara Falls Police Capt. David Legault.“They are checking out these packages."
Witnesses at the scene earlier reported seeing a black Nissan, believed to be the brothers’ vehicle, still parked at an odd angle on Elmwood Avenue, between 18th and 19th streets, with its driver’s side window down.
“We’re going to take some positive action shortly,” Legault told reporters at about 10:30 a.m. “For your safety, we want everybody back.”
A member of the Air National Guard spotted the two men in the vehicle early this morning and followed them into Niagara Falls where authorities stopped them at Elmwood Avenue and 19th Street, at roughly 7:30 a.m., police said. A State Police bomb squad also was called to the scene.
The car was occupied by two brothers, described as U.S. citizens who had what appears to be proper identification from Massachusetts, police said.
The brothers explained that they were tourists who had come to view the falls, according to local, state and federal law-enforcement officials who interviewed them.
But given the developing situation in the Boston area, authorities were taking no chances and called the state police, U.S. Border Patrol agents, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and members of the Western New York Joint Task Force.
The incident brought a small crowd of onlookers to the vicinity of Elmwood Avenue and 19th Street. Shortly after 10 a.m., law-enforcement officials directed bystanders to move back at least 100 feet from the intersection.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev & Tamerlan Tsarnaev, Chechen Muslim Terrorists & U.S. Immigrants – DREAM Act “Kids”; Amnesty Candidate
By Debbie Schlussel
So, now, we know. The two men who perpetrated Monday’s Boston Marathon terrorist attack are Islamic terrorists from Chechnya (Russia) who emigrated from there to the United States. They were brothers. One, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, is dead, and the other, Dzokhar (or Dzhokhar or Djohar) Tsarnaev, is a fugitive, so the entire Boston area is shut down, as he might be armed with a suicide vest. I note that every single major news broadcast only refers to these guys as “Chechnyan” or “Chechen” terrorists, NOT Islamic terrorists, which is what they are.
Remember all those people locked in a Russian theater–including lots of women and children–who were blown up by Chechnyan Islamic terrorists? Same people. Oh, and they are tied to Al-Qaeda and its worldwide network of nationalist Islamic terrorist groups. Same old jihad. Remember, THIS. IS. ISLAM.
DREAM Act “Kids”! . . .
The two of them came here several years ago and Tamerlan had a “Green Card” a/k/a “Legal Permanant Residence,” which means he basically had the green light to get U.S. citizenship. So, do we really need Marco Boob-io’s and his Senate Gangbang of Eight’s immigration amnesty bill so that more like the Tsarnaev Bros get “a pathway to citizenship”? Only if you’re a moron and want to see the end of America.
These are the “DREAM Act” kids we’re told are “American like us in ever way except on paper,” to use Barack Obama’s BS words. Tsarnaev was raised here in American culture, coming here at age seven.
And look how much he loved America. He murdered and maimed hundreds of Americans, after apparently receiving some sort of paramilitary training along with his brother. He learned this hate from his parents . . . just as hundreds of thousands of Muslim kids around America learn this hatred of this country from their parents, despite being given every opportunity, every freedom here. His online profile says his “worldview” is “Islam.” And we saw that worldview on display in practice, this week.

Questions now are, where did these guys live between 2001 and their entrance into the US?, and when did they enter the US? As of right now, all info indicates: These guys GREW UP IN MASSACHUSETTS for the last decade!! They were fluent (at least conversationally) in Russian and Chechen languages.
Their parents, community and religious leaders need to be investigated, and their online connections to Chechen Islamists and Chechen "freedom fighters"/terrorists needs to be investigated.

Chechen terrorists probed
By The Washington Times
Wednesday, October 13, 2004
U.S. security officials are investigating a recent intelligence report that a group of 25 Chechen terrorists illegally entered the United States from Mexico in July.
The Chechen group is suspected of having links to Islamist terrorists seeking to separate the southern enclave of Chechnya from Russia, according to officials familiar with intelligence reports.
Members of the group, said to be wearing backpacks, secretly traveled to northern Mexico and crossed into a mountainous part of Arizona that is difficult for U.S. border security agents to monitor, said officials speaking on the condition of anonymity.
The intelligence report was supplied to the U.S. government in late August or early September and was based on information from an intelligence source that has been proved reliable in other instances, one official said.
A second U.S. official said the report is being investigated, but said it could not be determined whether the group of Chechens actually entered the country, as the intelligence source reported.
“We don’t know whether or not that report is true,” this official said.
A spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection confirmed that the intelligence report was provided by another government agency, but said Border Patrol agents were unable to verify its accuracy.
It could not be learned whether the reported infiltration is related to the recent Education Department warning to school officials to examine security in the aftermath of the attack last month by pro-Chechnya Muslim terrorists on a school in Russia, in which more than 300 people were killed and some 700 wounded.
In the Russian attack, heavily armed Islamists took over and wired with explosives the school building in Beslan, North Ossetia. It is believed that an accidental explosion set off a battle between Russian security personnel and the terrorists, who set off several explosions and shot schoolchildren and teachers as they tried to escape.
U.S. officials believe the Beslan terrorists included some al Qaeda-linked foreign terrorists.
The Education Department letter said that school officials should examine “protective measure guidance” for helping to prevent and respond to a similar terrorist attack, were it to occur in the United States.
The notice said the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security are “currently unaware of any specific, credible information indicating a terrorist threat to public and private schools, universities or colleges in the United States.”
The letter stated that indicators of terrorist surveillance before an attack include interest in site plans for schools, bus routes and attendance lists from persons who don’t normally request such information.
Authorities also were advised to remain alert for “static surveillance” by people who may be disguised as panhandlers, shoeshiners, newspaper or flower vendors, or street sweepers who seem out of place in a particular area.
Other indicators of terrorist surveillance can include spying on school security drills, people staring at employees or vehicles in parking areas, and surveillance by pedestrians.
Fears of an attack on American schools also were raised by the recent discovery in Iraq of a computer disk containing data showing the layout of six schools in the United States, including districts in California, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, New Jersey and Oregon.
Officials believed the disk may have been part of a terrorist plot. However, FBI officials said on Friday that there did not appear to be a terrorist threat connected to the computer disk.
The Iraqi who had the disk, a member of Saddam Hussein’s Ba’ath Party, apparently was collecting information from the Internet sites of American schools that would be useful for emergency planning for Iraqi schools, U.S. officials said.
U.S. security officials have been concerned in recent months that al Qaeda or other terrorists are planning to enter the United States from Mexico.
Intelligence officials said a suspected al Qaeda leader who has been in the United States was spotted recently in Mexico. Officials believe Adnan Shukrijumah, whom the FBI wants for questioning, met with alien smugglers in Mexico and Honduras and was seeking ways to bring al Qaeda members into the United States. Shukrijumah was seen in August in the Sonora province of northern Mexico, officials said.
Since October 2003, authorities have arrested five Arabs attempting to cross illegally into the United States from Mexico.
In July, officials dismissed as untrue an Internet report that said a group of Middle Eastern men were recently caught trying to cross the border from Mexico.
The report apparently was based on a group of Oaxacan tribesmen who were stopped as they tried to cross the border in Arizona. The tribesmen spoke an Indian language native to southern Mexico that may have been mistaken for Arabic, officials said at the time.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, one of the two Chechen brothers identified as the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing, was a self-described “very religious” Muslim boxer who yearned for Chechen independence and who posed for a photo essay entitled “Will Box for Passport.”
He was identified as the suspect who died early Friday morning during a shootout with police in Watertown, Massachusetts — a suburb of Boston. His brother, who is still on the run as of this publishing, is named Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.
Tamerlan Tsarnaev was a student at Bunker Hill Community College and a Golden Gloves boxer who trained at Wai Kru mixed martial arts gym in Boston and competed in a national Golden Gloves competition. The Wai Kru gym could not be reached for comment.
Prior to his national Golden Gloves competition in Salt Lake City, photographer Johannes Kirn profiled Tsarnaev in a photo essay entitled “Will Box For Passport,” quoting the young boxer as saying that he is a ”very religious” Muslim, which prevents him from drinking, smoking or removing his shirt around women, and that he cares deeply about the independence of Chechnya from Russia.

“I don’t have a single American friend. I don’t understand them,” Tsarnaev told Kirn.
“Tamerlan says he doesn’t drink or smoke anymore: ‘God said no alcohol.’ A Muslim [SIC], he says: ‘There are no values anymore,’ and worries that ‘people can’t control themselves.’”
“Tamerlan says he doesn’t usually take his shirt off so girls don’t get bad ideas,” according to one of Kirn’s captions. “I’m very religious.”
“Tamerlan says he loves the movie ‘Borat,’ even though some of the jokes are a bit too much,” according to a caption.

Governor Cuomo Says Boston Bombing Part of ‘New Normal’

Mayor Michael Bloomberg may have canceled his morning radio appearance today in response to the ongoing manhunt for a suspect involved in Monday’s deadly bombing attack on the Boston Marathon, but another top New York official, Governor Andrew Cuomo, scheduled his own radio interview on The Capitol Pressroom soon after. Mr. Cuomo directly addressed the high-profile situation in the Bay State by employing a phrase he previously used to describe climate change in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy: “the new normal.”
“It’s a terrible situation in Boston. And, unfortunately, … one gets the sense that this is more reflective of the ‘new normal,’ if you will,” he explained. “So much of society is changing so rapidly. We talk about a ‘new normal’ when it comes t0 climate change and adjusting to a change in the weather patterns. ‘New normal’ when it comes to public security in a post-9/11 world. Where these random acts of violence, which at one time were implausible, now seem all-too-frequent.”
Additionally, Mr. Cuomo said New York police units are on stand-by and assisting authorities in Boston. The governor further noted that he worked with Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick during their shared time in former President Bill Clinton’s administration some years ago.
“I have been in contact. Our offices have been in contact and our respective officials have been talking,” he said. “I’m wanted him to know that we’re here for him. The authorities have been cooperating. We have a very good relationship with Massachusetts. They’ve been very kind to us in many circumstances … I’m a big fan of Deval’s. We were together in the Clinton administration so I know him personally and he’s doing a very good job.”
Re: Boston Marathon Bombing
Cuomo is clueless about pretty much anything.
Re: Boston Marathon Bombing
Indeed, Cuomo has had a series of poor concepts, but it almost seems he is saying get used to this. I mean, it serves this administration.
Boston is locked down and there is so much show of force. Homeland is even there.
One thing that I caught watching FOXnews yesterday just prior to the FBI brief was they were discussing how the FBI had done a vacuum like sweep in the area around the marathon of all wireless data from calls placed, to tweets, texts, instagram, all of it. Over 30k items they reported. Then they used an algorithm to sort normal from not normal and investigated that. Now, this I find a tad unsettling as this is admission that we can be snooped. Granted, for most its boring in a broad sense, but the fact is, it is proven it is done.
Re: Boston Marathon Bombing
We all knew we could be snooped. LOL
