Fallout 3 is supposed to be a great game; preps the mind for what's comin. :)
I've been thinking about picking up Fallout 3 from the screenshots and trailers I've seen but haven't played any of the other titles in the series. In light of that, will I be able to pick this up and get right into it?
Yes, it's a stand alone game. The plot is spelled out in the opening movie. It boils down to this...Vaults were built underground and your family got into one before the bombs fell. A crisis occurs and you leave the vault(different reasons in each game but amounts to the same thing). You wander the wasteland, find people who ask you to do things and you follow the main plotline(the reason you left in the first place) at your leisure. It's totally open ended.
Some of the more interesting things come as perks. I've taken Finesse and Bloody Mess. One improves your accuracy, the other adds damage(and explosive results) and using VATS(vault assisted targeting system) you can target body parts. Needless to say, with the sniper rifle(or anything high power) I tend to blow heads clean off. Reminds me of Platoon. "You ever see a head come apart like that?". Also all VATS shots are done in various slo-mo angles. Nothing like seeing a super mutant's head go flying.
The game is part FPS, part RPG and it's set in a Nostalgic 40s kinda theme but in 2272 or something. This particular one is done in and around Washington DC so all the sights are there.
You can actually solve the game practically without killing anyone if you decide to go high speech/barter and doing the sciences. It's fun to kill shit though.
There are radio stations, one is a patriotic themed thing and one other is "pirate radio" kinda like Dave Rabbit(vietnam era pirate dj in Saigon), telling jokes, doing news and giving snarky public service announcements.
It's addicting.
Sounds like I'll be putting it on my list then! :)
I've finished the game but I went back through and Fraps'd the last bit.
This is a MAJOR spoiler if you don't want to be spoiled. If not, enjoy. Not sure why it came out so dark. Maybe I should re-film it during the day.
Listen to Liberty Prime as he takes out Communists. "Communism is the definition of failure". LOL!

That is pretty good! I will definitely be picking this up for 360!
That has to be some of the most fun I've ever had in any game.
Just got Fallout today in trade for an old wireless router I had! :woot:
Started playing it, made my way out of the Vault and, into the immediately surrounding wasteland (chose "Gun Nut" for the level 2 Perk upon leaving, BTW :D). Went into the elementary school and got overwhelmed by raiders and died. I need bigger guns. :1pistol:
I've got to say, this game is pretty in depth and complex! Any helpful hints Mal?
Yeah, go to Megaton. Do all the quests there. It'll get you up high enough to start moving on. Save alot. VATS on heads. If you critical, you kill faster. If you vats while sneaking, it's an auto critical. Level matters so those first quests at megaton really help to get you over the newbie hump. I spose if you had any specific questions, I could address that.
After fighting my way through the Capital Building, The Mall, and making my way to the Washington Monument my 360 decided to freeze up on me. No big deal, right? After all, it has done it a couple times before on other games. Powered it off and back on and boom... Red Ring of Death. :comp:
And it just so happens that my 360 is 3 months out of warranty on the 3 year RROD warranty. So, we'll see if MS steps up to the plate and will repair it anyway.
I've even got the 3 Fallout expansion packs "Operation: Anchorage", "The Pitt", and "Broken Steel" for when I complete the base game.
Damn RROD... :rant1:
Damn, I didn't even know there was an expansion already.
It looks like the PC version isn't out yet. boooo
I'll get that on order right away :)
i've started a new char, going to go more evil than last time (which was pretty evil).
oh, and only quests worth doing in megaton are from moira and the girl in the bar. moira lives if you nuke MT but the other girl doesn't, so you'd have to finish that quest before you nuked the town.
I've ended up pretty evil but only because I will steal anything not nailed down and sell it for a few caps. Might explain why I have over 11k. :D
Edit: Oh, and 17 mini-nukes! :devious:
yep i'm a clepto too, but more of a "hey look at that scavenger out here all alone..."
I've got to ask... Am I the only one that launched a mini-nuke at the bomb in Megaton to see if it would set it off? :freak1:
I can't say that I actually shot the mini nuke in Megaton.
I did do the Ten Penny thing...Poof.

Fallout "New Vegas" Info From PC Gamer
I'm still playing through Fallout 3 by the way. :blackeye: I've gotten through the main story line and Operation Anchorage DLC and, am working on Broken Steel DLC. Still need to get to The Pitt DLC, Point Lookout DLC, Mothership Zeta DLC, and all the side missions.Quote:

Bethesda dropped the first teaser for Fallout: New Vegas this week, which is down for a fall release on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360, and now there's rumors circulating that PC Gamer has had the first look at it.
Here's what was gleaned from it by All Games Beta:
* There is an optional hardcore mode, the character needs to drink water, ammo has weight, healing isn't instant etc. Normal mode is more similar to Fallout 3 gameplay.
* The storyline is focused on the New California Republic vs. Caesar's Legion vs. New Vegas residents.
* You are not a vault dweller but are given a Pip-Boy by someone who is one.
* There is a screenshot of a vault suit as well.
* There is an assault rifle looking like the M4, as well as a new big gun with a backpack, held like a minigun.
* There are special moves for melee weapons in VATS – specifically a move for a golf club called "Fore" which seems to be a groin shot.
* The Hoover Dam is in the game and is supplying electricity to the city.
* There is a quest to rescue a ghoul from some super mutants. The ghoul can then become your companion.
* The Geckos are back.
* There are both dumb and intelligent super mutants, including the elite Nightkin.
* Some super mutants look similar to the ones in Fallout 3, while others are new. There is e.g. a female super mutant with a 1950s hairstyle who apparently is one of their leaders.
* Screenshots include a guy with a beard and straw hat, a ghoul an NCR Ranger
* The only picture of New Vegas itself is concept art and not a screenshot
* Some location screenshots include a huge model dinosaur advertising a hotel, some satellite dishes, an array of solar panels
* A character generation shot showing a "vigor machine" instead of the skill book
* NCR base is the McCarran Airport, Caesar's Legion is based in the Vegas Strip, while super mutants are based in a place called Black Mountain. There is also a town called Fremont and another called Primm. A topless revue is mentioned as being in the latter.
* NCR Ranger armor is similar to a brown combat armor with sleeves, there are concept arts of a Ranger
* Skils have a bigger effect on conversation choices. E.g. someone with a high Explosives skill may be able to have a conversation about explosives where appropriate.
* There is a Reputation system in addition to Karma.
Sounds lovely.
so sweet can hardly wait for this!

More new video and description of features.
Less than a month to go! :D
My Fallout 3 New Vegas arrives today!!
I'm still waiting for mine despite pre-ordering. :rant1::finger::banghead::1pissed::nutkick:
Newegg for the win.
I was on Vacation last week so I missed the 19th release day. I ordered it Monday from Newegg, it showed up Tuesday. Free shipping. They overnighted it from California, free.
I played the first bits of it. Now, this is clearly a premature statement but there's something missing with the story. I can't quite put my finger on it yet, but it seems like something isn't quite up to the standards of the other games. I only got in 2 hours so it could just be my astronomical expectations.
Yes, Newegg is great. Have ordered parts from them and have always been happy with the price and shipping time.
I ordered mine through a program we have at work. We get "points" worth about $.20 each when we make certain goals. Used to be we'd get almost 1000 points a year for making all our goals. They've cut payout on that about 75% and we still have to make the same goals. You then take these points and order things out of the catalog and it gets shipped from Amazon, Best Buy (as with FNV), or other vendors.
I sent an e-mail complaint 2 days ago but haven't heard anything back. So much for pre-order...
As for FNV, interesting you should say that. All of the reviews I've read say that this story is more well written than FO3. I'd love to see how they compare.
i finished the main quest this weekend. it's very good overall. no huge spoiler here, but you can't keep playing when the game is done, so make sure you have all your fun before you get to the end. i reloaded from a save point so i can keep on terrorizing the wasteland!
i got mine off of steam directly, works great.
WTF?
I thought they would have figured this out with FO3 and how they had to re-write the end with Broken Steel. Unless that is their plan to sucker people into getting planned expansion packs. Seems unnecessary though since most people would be likely to get them anyway.
Well, I've already determined that I'm going to be a good guy. The powder gangs attacked so I had to kill them. One thing that pisses me off is that after I've killed them and stripped their bodies naked...I lose Karma for stealing their shit? WTF?
HELL YEAH!
Look what the mail truck literally just dropped off! :woot:

See you in a few weeks. I did play for a bit last night and starting to get invested in the story.
Good God this game is like crack.
"Oh I'll just go check out this location and then shut it off. Okay, I'll shut it off after I go trade in this loot. Oh look, this shop has a weapon I've been wanting to get but it's expensive so I'll have to go get more caps... I'll just go loot this one place and get some more caps. Hmmm... A side mission at this place, eh, shouldn't take too long. Hey, I just found a new location during this side mission, I think I'll check it out..."
And so on and so forth. Before you know it, it's 7 hours later! :D
Oh and I've now got the Alien Blaster and Archimedes so I'm pretty much unstoppable. :p Working on getting the Power Armor training right now.
Just out of curiosity, who all are you guys using as companions? I've got Boone and will get Rex eventually. Boone pretty much rocks with his Hunting Rifle and fast followup shots. Plus with him you get the Sniper Spotter perk which highlights your enemies in red when you sight down a weapon.
I've got Boone and rex...no alien blaster though.
I'm not really having any trouble killing anything. Not sure what Archimedes is...I did get some named weapon but I sold it. Was a rocket launcher I think. Useless.
Probably Annabelle. I collect all the unique weapons and leave them at my place (Victor's Shack)
I don't want to give too much away for anyone else but Archimedes is related to Helios One. ;) Do you have the Wild Wasteland Perk? That is the only way to get the Alien Blaster.
I did have a little trouble around level 8. For some reason the game thought I should run into a Deathclaw on my way to get the Alien Blaster. After I died about 3 times, it finally didn't show back up.
So I finished yesterday.
Here's my stats.
http://thewellrats.com/malbor2/taa/fo3nv-final.jpg
A couple days ago I completed a side quest on FNV and was awarded a unique weapon called This Machine, an M1 Garand that uses the .308.
I looked it up on the Fallout Wikia to get the details of it.
The name is apparently a reference and play on Woodie Guthrie's guitar which had a sticker that said "This Machine Kills Fascists".
This Machine has scratched on the left side, in response to the guitar's slogan, "Well This Machine Kills Commies". I LOVE THAT! :D
I am, in all seriousness, definitely considering getting "This Machine Kills Commies" etched into each side of my XCR's upper. :bandito:
Something you Fallout fans will appreciate...
I finally got some free time this evening to get most of the work done on a little project I've been working on for a while.
My Nuka-Cola collection! :D
From left to right: Nuka-Cola, Nuka-Cola Quantum, Nuka-Cola Victory, Nuka-Cola Clear, Nuka-Cola Quartz, and Sunset Sarsaparilla.

Nuka-Cola, Quantum, and Clear are from FO3 though, Clear was only mentioned in a side quest and never actually seen. Victory, Quartz, and Sunset Sarsaparilla are from FNV.
I still need to put the finishing touches on it with some labels and some wood stain on the base.
If you're curious as to how they were made, here's how. The Nuka-Cola is just an unopened bottle of Mexican Coke. The rest of the bottles are also Mexican Coke bottles, with the labels scraped off, except for the SS which is in an empty Bell's Oberon beer (my favorite beer!) bottle. Quantum and Victory are UV reactive dyes in distilled water. Clear and SS are just plain distilled water. Quartz is whatever flavor the white Poweraid is. :D The Quantum is illuminated up with 16 UV LEDs. I tried Victory with UV but it looked too yellow. So the Victory, Clear, and Quartz are just lit up with plain white LEDs. The white LEDs are a little bright and I might try to knock down the brightness with a somewhat darker translucent material, not sure what though but I'll think of something.
I do also still have to get the items that came with the FNV Collector's Edition to complete the setup.
You know, sometimes I really hate how damn buggy Fallout can be.
I got the new Honest Hearts DLC on launch day and just started playing it several days ago. For this DLC your companions cannot follow you so I sent both Boone and Rex back to the Lucky 38. Figured it would be easier than rounding them up from their separate places.
Fast forward to today where I've beaten HH. After getting back to the Wasteland I head straight to the the Lucky 38, go up to the Presidential Suite and... Surprise! No Boone or Rex!
Tried waiting over a week in game and nothing. Tried the Vault 22 elevator trick, nothing. Go to Novac and check Boone's room, nothing. Wait until the middle of the night and check the dinosaur, fucking nothing!
Pissed, I figured I'd swing by Freeside and take a look at the Kings' HQ. Thankfully out comes Rex from the back area.
Tried going back to Lucky 38 to see if Boone was back now and of course, nope.
So went and picked up Veronica for a companion for now. Sucks not having the Sniper Spotter perk. At least I was able to get a beret from Boone before I lost him but, I think he's still got the T-51 or T-45 I gave him. Good thing I'm pretty sure he didn't have anything else valuable.
What makes me even more mad though is that my brother played through HH with his profile on the same Xbox and HD, goes to the Lucky 38, and there are Rex and Boone just like they should be. Of course, he had problems even getting HH to load on his profile for a bit until Xbox support had us try a few things.
It's OFFICIAL!
