Chaos At Cairo Airport As Evacuations Begin
by Soraya Sarhaddi Nelson
January 30, 2011
Many countries and businesses are evacuating their people from Egypt this weekend as ongoing protests against President Hosni Mubarak were overshadowed by the growing chaos and roaming bands of looters and vandals.
Traffic was backed up a mile outside of Cairo's main airport. Taxis and vans with suitcases piled on the roofs jockeyed for a better place in line. The terminals were equally chaotic.
Hundreds of passengers couldn't get inside because of the crowds. They rolled their suitcases into a long queue that extended into the parking lot.
Dutch citizen Else Leegte said her husband's company called them last night, telling them to pack light and get to the airport. She said all she took with her were important papers and her laptop.
Leegte says she doesn't even know where the jet the company chartered is taking them, other than somewhere in Europe.
"It's unreal, it's unreal," she said. "This is not the way I see Egypt. It's a shame, actually."
New Zealander Angela Hey said her husband, Owen, works for Shell Oil, which also ordered the families of employees to leave on Saturday. She and their 13-year-old son, Nathan, and 11-year-old daughter, Rebecca, were being flown to Amsterdam, where Hey said they will try and figure out what to do next.
She says they didn't want to go.
"We've got some good friends that are still here," she said. "My driver, my maid, I mean they have to stay behind. I'd like to think well come back very soon."
The many Egyptians standing in line appeared less optimistic. Dozens pushed trolleys packed with multiple suitcases bursting at the seams because they planned to stay away for a long time.
Mariam Asaad is one who will be gone for at least a year. The 20-year-old pharmacy student hails from the Cairo neighborhood of Heliopolis, where Mubarak has his presidential palace. But she says she, her brother and their father were flying to Australia because they feel unsafe with thieves and thugs breaking into their neighbors' homes.
"You know there's no policemen, there's nothing in Egypt at the moment," she said. "It's just horrible."
Asaad said it was a hard decision as they were forced to leave her mother and other relatives behind because they couldn't get a visa.
"We are still worried about the other people, we are still worried about our country," she said. "We don't know what to do."

Egyptian standoff: Mubarak stays, army won't oust him and people stand fast
DEBKAfile Special Report January 30, 2011, 11:20 PM (GMT+02:00)
The popular uprising against the Egyptian regime reached a standoff at the end of its sixth day, Sunday night, Jan. 30: President Hosni Mubarak made it clear to the armed forces chiefs whom he met at military headquarters during the day that he has no intention of bowing to the massive popular call to step down.
It is from there that operations to quell the uprising against his regime are being conducted.
Mubarak clearly had not intention of heeding the pressure from Washington and European capitals to listen to the people and their call for an orderly transition to "a democratic government responsive to the aspirations of the Egyptian people" – reiterated by President Barack Obama Sunday.
The generals then continued to pour divisions into Cairo and Egypt's main cities in an effort to assume control. However, this tactic is not working: The officers and men on the ground realize they and their tanks are extras in a show of strength to the cities without the power to exert it: they can't shoot the protesters or exercise any other form of violence.
In Cairo, for instance, vigilantes protecting private property in the suburbs handed looters over to the soldiers who passed them to the police. In Alexandria, Egyptian tank officers were seen directing traffic in the town center.
Against the regime, the opposition groups - of which there are at least ten - are just as hamstrung by their failure to produce a leader able to stand up and challenge the president. For lack of any representative figure, they picked the retired nuclear watchdog director Dr. Mohamed ElBaradi to speak for them in negotiations over the transfer of power.
Hardly anyone in Egypt knows him: He is better known outside the country having spent many years abroad.
debkafile's Middle East sources report that the Egyptian crisis looks like being in for a protracted period of uncertainty unless the army, which holds the key to breaking the deadlock, decided to step in and pick a side - Mubarak or the people. The generals alone have the clout to force Mubarak to step down and get out, as happened in Tunisia, or smash the street demonstrations. This would mean a massacre, the army's identification with a repressive regime and the end of its historic acceptance as the people's army.
It will be noted that the new Vice President Gen. Omar Suleiman, 76, is seen more as a loyalist of the president, whom he served as intelligence minster and strong arm, than the military.
He appears to be behind the steps ordered Sunday, such as sending Air Force fighter jets to swoop over Tahrir Square and building up a military presence in the main towns. None of these steps have broken the back of the uprising or intimidated the protesters. State TV announced accordinglty that the police would return to the streets Monday, two days after they were chased away by the protesters.
The curfew which has been consistently flouted is to be extended: From 1500 hours Monday, Jan. 31, no one will be allowed on town streets until the following morning.

U.S. Stock-Index Futures Decline on Concern Egypt Unrest May Slow Recovery
By Joanna Ossinger - Jan 30, 2011 9:14 PM GMT-0200
U.S. stock-index futures fell, indicating the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index may extend the biggest decline since August, as investors speculated Egypt’s crisis will slow the global recovery.
Futures on the S&P 500 expiring in March fell 0.3 percent to 1,267.50 as of 8:13 a.m. in Tokyo. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures retreated 43 points, or 0.4 percent, to 11,732. Middle East shares sank yesterday, sending Abu Dhabi’s index down 3.7 percent, its biggest drop in 14 months.
“The situation in Egypt is the catalyst for a downturn,” said James Paulsen, chief investment strategist at Minneapolis- based Wells Capital Management, which oversees about $340 billion. “We have a market that is vulnerable to a technical correction. There’s an investor mindset that’s been expecting that to happen for a while now, given where the market is and how fast it’s come up.”
The S&P 500 has surged 22 percent since Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said Aug. 27 that he was prepared to take action to help the economy. Stocks fell last week, preventing the longest stretch of weekly gains for the Dow average since 1995, as unrest in Egypt triggered the biggest one-day drop in the gauge since November and overshadowed higher-than-projected earnings at companies from Intel Corp. to DuPont Co.
Demonstrations in Egypt
Demonstrations in Egypt continued over the weekend. Yesterday, President Hosni Mubarak met with top military commanders as tens of thousands of protesters defied a curfew and gathered in central Cairo, chanting slogans against the new prime minister and vice president he appointed Jan. 29.
The Bloomberg GCC 200 Index comprising Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the U.A.E., Oman, Bahrain and Kuwait lost 0.3 percent. Egypt’s market was closed today after sliding 16 percent last week. It will remain shut tomorrow.
The Dow was set for its longest weekly streak of gains since 1995 until Jan. 28, when the index slumped 1.4 percent after Mubarak implemented a curfew in Cairo, Suez and Alexandria and fighting between police and protesters broke out. The S&P 500 dropped 1.8 percent, the most since Aug. 11, with earnings reports from Ford Motor Co. and Amazon.com Inc. helping pull stocks lower.
Overall, companies in the S&P 500 also continued to post better-than-estimated profits this season, with 136 of the 183 companies that have reported so far, or 74 percent, beating projections. Technology companies have exceeded forecasts by 16 percent, the highest of any other industry. A group of computer and software stocks advanced 0.6 percent last week, the third- best of 10 industries in the S&P 500.
U.S. GDP
Concern Egypt’s unrest will hinder oil exports through the Suez Canal overshadowed a report showing the U.S. economy expanded 3.2 percent in the fourth quarter. Household purchases, about 70 percent of the economy, rose at a 4.4 percent pace, the most since the first quarter of 2006, signaling the world’s largest economy and consumers are recovering from the worst recession since World War II. New-home purchases in the U.S. also rose more than forecast last month, Commerce Department figures showed last week.
Technical indicators suggested that stocks are poised for a pullback. More than 80 percent of stocks traded above their 200- day moving average last week, according to Birinyi Associates Inc. The last time that many were so high was in April, before the S&P 500 began a decline in which it lost as much as 16 percent. A measure of the degree to which S&P 500 gains outpace losses, known as the relative strength index, jumped to 71.8 this week. The RSI exceeded 70 for five straight days through April 15, before the S&P 500 peaked.
