LeRay, NY Man Faces Weapons Possessions Charges
This is what happens if you aren't David Gregory...
LeRay, NY Man Faces Weapons Possessions Charges
January 7, 2013
A town of LeRay man was accused Sunday of possessing high-capacity magazines for an assault rifle.
Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies say 32 year old Nathan Haddad allegedly had five 30-round magazines for an AR-15 rifle in his possession.
Police say the magazines were found during a vehicle check on Steinhilber Road in the town of LeRay.
Haddad was charged with five counts of third degree criminal possession of a weapon and arraigned in Watertown town court.
So apparently this guy got jacked up by an asshole cop at a vehicle checkpoint for what Mr. Haddad thought were pre-ban magazines. What isn't mentioned is that Mr. Haddad is also a decorated, retired member of the 10th Mountain Division.
A legal defense fund has been set up for the guy here. The defense fund website has been vetted by a senior staff member at ARFCOM who is a lawyer in NY and has spoken with both Mr. Haddad and his brother about this. Feel free to kick a few bucks his way. He's looking to raise $10,000. I sent $20 last night. When I sent the money, it was at about $4700 and today it is already up to just over $5000!
Also, feel free to spread the link and story to others you know! Lord knows this could be any one of us getting jacked up for some bullshit law.

Re: LeRay, NY Man Faces Weapons Possessions Charges
I thought this appropriate to repost here:
Here is an example of the kind of people that gun control is making criminals out of. Mario Cuomo is a goddamn Nazi and needs to be kicked to the curb along with the rest of his ilk. I don't want to see what lies down this road we are on. If you can afford to contribute to Nathan Haddad's defense fund, I would encourage you to do so.

Bump and a sticky for this for the time being.
Hopefully we here at our small site can help scare up a few bucks for him. :)

Re: LeRay, NY Man Faces Weapons Possessions Charges
Looks like it is starting to get some traction!
They're now up to almost $6600 but they've upped their goal to $100k. Maybe they're planning on higher court proceedings... ;) From what I've read about Mr. Haddad, he looks like a good candidate to push a pro-2A court offense.

Ryan I sent some private emails out about it (I am hesitant to drop money on it yet, but likely will in a few days) and it's getting attention all over the Patriot community now

Re: LeRay, NY Man Faces Weapons Possessions Charges
Maybe the NRA and GOA ought to get involved?
-
Re: LeRay, NY Man Faces Weapons Possessions Charges
They definitely need to.
By the way, I've been following the thread on ARFCOM that Aimless (the ARFCOM staff member that is the NY lawyer) started. He's the one that vetted the donation site and Mr. Haddad's story. I get the impression that he is now involved in representing him as he is being very tight lipped about details of the story but he has said that the details of how these magazines were found by the Sheriffs was very shady.
Mr. Haddad's fund is now at almost $8700! But, he'll need a lot more than that to fight these statists.

Re: LeRay, NY Man Faces Weapons Possessions Charges
The fund at the link above is over 15k now.

Re: LeRay, NY Man Faces Weapons Possessions Charges
No kidding? That's awesome!

Re: LeRay, NY Man Faces Weapons Possessions Charges
Wow, the fund has jumped at least $5k since this morning when you posted Mal!
I just got this in email:

New Update from Michael...
Update on Nathan Haddad
On January 6, 2013 Nathan Haddad, a decorated combat veteran, who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom was arrested for being in possession of 5 EMPTY AR-15 magazines by the Jefferson County Sheriffs Department. Nathan has been a long time responsible gun owner, church attender, volunteer with a variety of veteran organizations, and a contributing tax payer.
Due to ongoing legal considerations Nathan cannot provide any statements. He did relay that this generous outpouring of support is so appreciated and completely humbling. Nathan has sold many of his assets and thanks everybody for standing in the gap. You are allowing Nathan to mount a viable and vigorous defense.
Nathan fought for this country and believes in justice. Our hope and prayer is that justice will be served. Please at this point continue to provide financial support. We still do not know how expensive this defense will cost. Pray that the authorities will use their discretion and also seek justice. At this time it is vital that we remain respectful and have faith that wrong will fail and right prevail.
A significant amount of the funds donated have already been used in Nathans defense. An effort is being made to provide a level of openness and transparency so that anybody who invests in Nathan and the 2nd Amendment will know their funds were used properly. In the event that more funds are received than will be necessary to resolve Nathans legal defense Nate has already requested those funds be given to a number of charitable organizations that work with veterans (this alone speaks to his character.)
Pray for peace for Nathan. He is facing the potential loss of freedom, loss of voting rights, and the loss of his 2nd amendment rights. Pray that justice is served. If you would like to send an encouraging word you may leave a comment here. Thank you again for your support.

So all these donations are to make a lawyer rich. How about the lawyer charge a reasonable rate in cases like this? Not $250/hr plus law clerk costs and every staple and paperclip is itemized.

Re: LeRay, NY Man Faces Weapons Possessions Charges
I got this a couple days ago and forgot to post this. It's an update from Nathan's brother:
Quote:
Over the course of the last six weeks our silence has not been voluntary. Let us say, those in Jefferson County New York in charge of the Justice System hate the First Amendment as much as they hate the Second Amendment.
The Jefferson County District Attorney offered Nathan Haddad a plea deal. It was for two misdemeanors that would be conditionally discharged after one year. In addition, he would receive a $200 fine. Further, Nathans pistol permit and gun ownership rights would be immediately restored.
An unjust law is no law at all but the problem is in a tyrannical system it is now law of all! Nathan chose to accept this plea as it was apparent the only way he would be able to win without a protracted fight was through jury nullification. In a state which elected Andrew Cuomo and a county that elected Cindy Intschert, Nathan didnt like his odds.
While we would have loved to see a Mr. Smith Goes to Washington showdown at the Supreme Court Nathan simply wanted to continue on with his life. It was near certain the judge in this case was going to massage the verdict to express his anger over the scrutiny this case received.
The pressure brought in this case is like nothing any of these career politicians had ever seen. The intense focus you brought saved Nathan from years in jail. Nathan got nearly everything he wanted. We respect Nathans choice.
The remaining funds will be used to pay Nathans legal expenses. The remaining portion will be disposed of with assistance and guidance from Nathan Haddad. To that end, this fund has already given $1,000 to the legal defense fund of a combat wounded veteran Benjamin Wassall. Ben, a Marine, was injured in Iraq. He became the first person charged under the NYS Safe Act. Ben is another good guy who is being targeted by New York State.
We would like to sincerely thank all those who have donated and prayed for Nathan during this difficult time with a special thank you to Seth Buchman. Nathan will be sharing his story in the near future. He intends at this point to wet a hook and catch a few trout. He then will buy a shotgun and do some hunting.
God Bless all of you!
Thank You!
Honestly, this is probably the best outcome for Nathan. It would have been very hard for him to take this to higher court and possibly have as positive an outcome. Hopefully he uses his newly found freedom to move the hell out of NY.

Re: LeRay, NY Man Faces Weapons Possessions Charges
We had been considering to move to upstate NY but have since cancelled such ideas. Forget that state unless it turns around. I have relatives in the upstate and city with the namesake, but will not move there now due to the overzealous laws that counter our very basic rights as citizens. Well, that and also out of control taxes.

Re: LeRay, NY Man Faces Weapons Possessions Charges
Didn't you hear? New York is lowering taxes on businesses! It must be true, they're running advertisements on TV 24/7 proclaiming it.
See, here is how this works.
Suppose your personal income tax was 4.5% in the state.
Suppose that in 2013, your tax was supposed to go to 4.75%.
The legislature halted the implementation of the tax.
Congratulations! You've just had your taxes lowered!

Re: LeRay, NY Man Faces Weapons Possessions Charges
LOL! I've seen those adverts and literally laughed out loud when I did. Had no idea it was an even bigger joke!
