Obama calls for 'meaningful action' after shooting

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A tearful President Barack Obama said Friday he grieved about the massacre at a Connecticut elementary school as a father first, declaring "our hearts are broken today. He promised action to prevent such tragedies again but did not say what that would be.

The scene in the White House briefing room was one of the most outwardly emotional moments of Obama's presidency.

"The majority of those who died were children -- beautiful, little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old," Obama said.

He paused for several seconds to keep his composure as he teared up and wiped an eye. Nearby, two aides cried and held hands as they listened to Obama.

"They had their entire lives ahead of them -- birthdays, graduations, wedding, kids of their own," Obama continued about the victims. "Among the fallen were also teachers, men and women who devoted their lives to helping our children."

Said the president: "Our hearts are broken today."

A gunman opened fire inside an elementary school where his mother worked, killing at least 26 people, including 18 children. The shooter blasted his way through the building as young students cowered helplessly or were gunned down.

Obama statement after Connecticut school shooting

Posted: Today at 3:45 pm EST

Text of President Barack Obama's address to the nation after Friday's mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school, as provided by CQ Transcriptions:
"This afternoon, I spoke with Governor Malloy and FBI Director Mueller. I offered Gov. Malloy my condolences on behalf of the nation and made it clear he will have every single resource that he needs to investigate this heinous crime, care for the victims, counsel their families."

"We've endured too many of these tragedies in the past few years. And each time I learn the news, I react not as a president, but as anybody else would as a parent. And that was especially true today. I know there's not a parent in America who doesn't feel the same overwhelming grief that I do."

"The majority of those who died today were children -- beautiful, little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old. They had their entire lives ahead of them -- birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own. Among the fallen were also teachers, men and women who devoted their lives to helping our children fulfill their dreams."

"So our hearts are broken today for the parents and grandparents, sisters and brothers of these little children, and for the families of the adults who were lost."

"Our hearts are broken for the parents of the survivors, as well, for as blessed as they are to have their children home tonight, they know that their children's innocence has been torn away from them too early and there are no words that will ease their pain."

"As a country, we have been through this too many times. Whether it is an elementary school in Newtown, or a shopping mall in Oregon, or a temple in Wisconsin, or a movie theater in Aurora, or a street corner in Chicago, these neighborhoods are our neighborhoods and these children are our children. And we're going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics."

"This evening, Michelle and I will do what I know every parent in America will do, which is hug our children a little tighter, and we'll tell them that we love them, and we'll remind each other how deeply we love one another. But there are families in Connecticut who cannot do that tonight, and they need all of us right now. In the hard days to come, that community needs us to be at our best as Americans, and I will do everything in my power as president to help, because while nothing can fill the space of a lost child or loved one, all of us can extend a hand to those in need, to remind them that we are there for them, that we are praying for them, that the love they felt for those they lost endures not just in their memories, but also in ours."

"May God bless the memory of the victims and, in the words of Scripture, heal the brokenhearted and bind up their wounds."

Ryan Lanza is not a suspect at this point.

    Adam Lanza is the shooter.

At least four weapons were involved, including one that fired .223 rounds.

We will have six months to two years to "turn in the guns" before mass arrests begin.
    And most people will comply.

Semi-automatic rifles and mags greater than 10. The catalyst for complete disarmament, a revolution and tyranny.

As I stated this morning, the shooter fired the first shots in the Civil War 2.0

I'm sorry, killing kids is beyond the pale. But banning guns won't stop murderers from murdering. China had an incident this morning in which a knife wielding kook injured or killed 21 people. (I haven't been able to get much details on that from here).

The Fog of war is insane.

It's amazing to me that we can't get a straight story 4+ hours after this tragedy.

I'm not surprised in a small town.

When I worked in DC and traveled with the WH we often visited small towns. More than once we got into issues with local police who were not getting the word about us. We had many, many incidents where the media mistook us for "officials" or "Secret Service" (I had my own share of those incidents through NO FAULT of mine).

I'm about to bail out of here for the weekend. No more news at home other than what I can glean from the Internet.

You guys post anything new you hear, please.

My heart goes out to the parents of the children who will not see Christmas this year, and to the children who've lost parents.

I hope the shooter burns in hell and I hope and pray the President and Congress do NOT do something rash.

    Shooter's girl friend is "missing".

The beginning of the attack was broadcast over the intercom while the principle was doing the daily announcements.

An official with knowledge of the situation said the shooter was armed with a .223-caliber rifle. Four weapons in total were recovered from the scene. The motive is not yet known.

The above were headlines I pulled from various places. I noted just now that Drudge has them all.

    SHould go there initially.

Apparently the news media is circulating Facebook profiles for the WRONG GUY.... as usual.

Left Mobilizes to Politicize School Shooting

    Windows Media

    BEGIN TRANSCRIPT
RUSH: A terrible and awful thing has happened in Connecticut at a school in Newtown, Connecticut, I'm told. A shooting at a school, 26 people dead, including 18 children. It's just awful. It is terrible, incomprehensible. But I'm gonna tell you something. As we sit here at this very moment, you know it and I know it, there are liberals trying to find a way to blame this on conservatives and Republicans. It may sound a little hard-edged to say that, but I've lived through these things for 25-plus years.
Every such incident as this, even Hurricane Katrina, they tried to blame on Bush. We actually had people saying he didn't care. He wanted to steer it if he could have to get rid of the population there. So we shall soon see. It won't be long. Gabby Giffords shooting, you name it. Any incident like this. There was the Dark Knight Rises shooting in Aurora, Colorado. Brian Ross, ABC News, blamed it on the Tea Party. So it may sound a little hard-edged to say it, but I'm telling you, there are elements of the mainstream media who are doing everything they can, their number one objective is to see if there's anything they can blame on conservative media or Republican policies or the Second Amendment. I don't care what it is, you know that that's coming. I just want to get it out there and prepare you for it.
RUSH: Even as I was explaining and reacting to this horrible shooting in Newtown, Connecticut... Maybe, what, 14, 16, 18 children are dead. Some are only four or five years old. Even as I was saying/predicting that the left/the media were trying to figure out how they could blame this on conservatives -- or politicize it, turn it into an event to advance their agenda...
As I was saying that, a hostette at MSNBC, Alex Wagner, said, "Hopefully, this shooting will result in political capital to reform gun laws. It is hopefully -- and we say this every single time we cover one of these things. There's gotta be some kind of measurable change, some kind of reaction. One would hope there would be some political capital to reform the way in which we handle gun and gun violence in this country."
So they're already calculating. That's what so peeves me about these people. You've got a horrible event here, and they're already looking to politicize it. It's not what it is. It's an opportunity! These people look at stuff like this as an opportunity (it's sickening) to advance their agenda or blame conservatives. The shooter's dead. CBS says a second person is in custody. Jay Carney, the White House spokesman, has already been asked if the shooting will help advance gun control.
    BREAK TRANSCRIPT
RUSH: By the way, to all you leftists who, in a sickening fashion, are trying to conceive ways to politicize this just awful incident in Newtown, Connecticut, trying to find a way to get rid of guns, trying to find a way to politicize this and advance your agenda, let me just point out we had guns 30, 40, 50, a hundred years ago, and we didn't have mass murders every other month.
So what's changed? It is not the number of guns that's changed. If you people on the left are so eager to control things, we actually need some values control. We actually need some social guardrails. I don't even know if that would eliminate stuff like this. We don't know why yet, purpose, reason. The psychological community is eagerly trying to understand this, too.

That's another aspect of this. "We must dig deep, Mr. Limbaugh into the psyche of the shooter to find out what it is that makes them do these things. We must learn."
    Why?
"Well, so that we can attempt to prevent such behavior, recognize it in certain people and prevent it from happening in the future."
What would you do if you recognized it? Before they picked up the gun and started firing away, what would you do?
"Well, of course, that would depend on the nearest jail, Mr. Limbaugh."
Here's Piers Morgan, British import, CNN. He just tweeted: "Nothing happened after Aurora. Now it must." We don't even know what happened yet. We know the end result of what happened, but we don't know anything about this yet, and the left is already mobilized. As they always will and always do, they try to politicize the event for their advantage, mobilize down their anti-gun highway.
    BREAK TRANSCRIPT
RUSH: Well, now CNN says that the number of people killed at the Newtown, Connecticut, school is closer to 30, and a federal law enforcement official says that most of the dead are children. And even as we speak, the Drive-By Media and the Democrats are attempting to politicize the issue to advance their own agenda. In this case, probably an assault on the Second Amendment again. I guarantee you that they are overturning everything they can in their quest to be able to blame this on Republicans. This, to them, is an opportunity. At least to the Democrat media people that are tweeting and Facebooking on this, they are excited about it. Oh, yes, it's a golden opportunity. It's sick.

News orgs circulate Facebook profile, photos of unconfirmed shooter

by Jeff Sonderman Published Dec. 14, 2012 3:35 pm Updated Dec. 14, 2012 5:07 pm
Reporters and producers around the country, frantically searching for information online about the alleged school shooter and found what seemed like a match. Ryan Lanza, 24, was believed responsible for the deaths of 27 people in Newtown, Conn., at the Sandy Hook elementary school.
The Facebook profile showed a Ryan Lanza from Newtown, Conn., who currently lives in Hoboken, N.J., and is a male who looks like he’s in his 20s. It fits the police description, so countless news orgs ran with it in stories and tweets.
Problem is, it seems to be the wrong guy.
Hours later, there were reports that Adam Lanza, 20, was the shooter, not his brother Ryan. The AP’s latest report explains that “earlier, a law enforcement official mistakenly transposed the brothers’ first names.”
NJ.com is reporting “former Jersey Journal staff writer Brett Wilshe said he has spoken with Ryan Lanza of Hoboken, who told Wilshe the shooter may have had his identification.”
Some of Ryan Lanza’s Facebook friends started pointing out that he was still posting messages (after the shooter had already died), specifically denying involvement.
But by then, his photo was retweeted thousands of times and many news orgs published it.
BuzzFeed went BIG with its supposed find of “the first possible photo” of the shooter:

Gawker published the photo under the headline “Is this Ryan Lanza, the Connecticut school shooter?”

Gawker deleted that post after realizing its mistake, then replaced it with this:

Mediaite ran many photos, similarly under a question-mark-couched headline.

Then it replaced it with this:

And Fox News ran with it too.

Slate tweeted it as well and Huffington Post used the Facebook photo.

Just heard on Hannity, the shooter may have had some sort of mental/personality disorder.

Just me spitballing but I wonder if he was some 12/21 nutter? We are only a week away from that. Could we see more stuff in the coming days like this or the Heaven's Gate folks?

LIVE UPDATES: Newtown, Conn., School Shooting

4:52 p.m: Neighbors described Adam Lanza to ABC as “odd” and displaying characteristics associated with mental illness.

4:41 p.m.: Federal law enforcement sources now say Connecticut school shooting gunman was Adam Lanza, 20, and not his brother Ryan Lanza, 24, as earlier reported. Adam was found dead in the school along with his mother, a kindergarten teacher there.

So what about the second crime scene with a dead body? His Girl Friend?

Bloomberg: Obama Must Take 'Immediate Action' Against Guns

    Print Article Send a Tip

by Ben Shapiro 14 Dec 2012, 1:44 PM PDT post a comment
Today, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, an ardent gun control advocate, moved to politicize the monstrous school shooting in Connecticut, issuing the following statement:

With all the carnage from gun violence in our country, it’s still almost impossible to believe that a mass shooting in a kindergarten class could happen. It has come to that. Not even kindergarteners learning their A,B,Cs are safe. We heard after Columbine that it was too soon to talk about gun laws. We heard it after Virginia Tech. After Tucson and Aurora and Oak Creek. And now we are hearing it again. For every day we wait, 34 more people are murdered with guns. Today, many of them were five-year olds. President Obama rightly sent his heartfelt condolences to the families in Newtown. But the country needs him to send a bill to Congress to fix this problem. Calling for ‘meaningful action’ is not enough. We need immediate action. We have heard all the rhetoric before. What we have not seen is leadership – not from the White House and not from Congress. That must end today. This is a national tragedy and it demands a national response. My deepest sympathies are with the families of all those affected, and my determination to stop this madness is stronger than ever.

If Bloomberg’s deepest sympathies were with the family, he wouldn’t use this as an opportunity to get on his soapbox about gun control. We don’t know all the facts of the case yet, Connecticut has some of the most restrictive gun control laws in the country, and it seems that the shooter obtained his guns legally.
