Obama to 'Quickly' Go for Immigration Reform and Gun Control

    W.H. pledges action this month.

    6:54 PM, Jan 2, 2013 • By DANIEL HALPER

President Barack Obama will go for immigration reform and gun control this month, the White House tells the left-leaning Huffington Post. Obama's actions will reportedly be done "quickly."

"An Obama administration official said the president plans to push for immigration reform this January. The official, who spoke about legislative plans only on condition of anonymity, said that coming standoffs over deficit reduction are unlikely to drain momentum from other priorities. The White House plans to push forward quickly, not just on immigration reform but gun control laws as well," reports the Huffington Post.

"The timeframe is likely to be cheered by Democrats and immigration reform advocates alike, who have privately expressed fears that Obama's second term will be drowned out in seemingly unending showdowns between parties."

The outlet claims that it is "unclear what type of immigration policies the White House plans to push in January."

No details on what sort of gun control legislation the White House will seek were offered in the article.

As Politico reported last month, a "Gang of Eight," a conference of 8 senators from both parties, "has begun to meet to discuss immigration reform." But it is not at all clear what progress this group has made and what immigration laws it might propose.

The Huffington Post quotes a Democratic aide who believes "Good news for immigration advocates may have come Tuesday night, when Boehner broke the so-called 'Hastert Rule' and allowed the fiscal cliff bill to come for a vote without support from a majority of his Republican conference. Given opposition to immigration reform by many Tea Party Republicans, the proof that Boehner is willing to bypass them on major legislation is a good sign"

Obama Bypasses Congress, Shifts Rules on Immigration Again

by John Sexton 2 Jan 2013 post a comment

It took a year, but the Obama administration has now changed immigration rules to make it easier for illegal aliens with U.S. relatives to remain in the country while seeking a visa.

Illegal immigrants who have family members -- a spouse, children, or parents -- who are already U.S. citizens usually have to return to their home country in order to apply for a visa to stay in the U.S. Those who had already been in the U.S. for more than 6 months illegally would also have to apply for a waiver to ignore their unlawful presence before their visa application could be considered.

In practice, this meant that those wishing to remain in the U.S. were forced to leave the country for as long as a year while waiver paperwork was processed. It also meant that many illegal immigrants refused to take the risk of applying for legal status when they had passed the 6-month mark, since applying for status meant leaving the country for an extended period of time and being separated from family members who were citizens.

Last January, the Department of Homeland Security began the process of amending the rules affecting those who have family members who are U.S. citizens. A proposed rule change was published in the Federal Register on April 2, 2012, and after taking comments the final rule was published today with a few modifications.

The new rule allows illegal immigrants to apply for a provisional unlawful presence waiver while still in the U.S. (rather than having to leave the country to do so). As the rule explains, the change "is expected to result in a reduction of the time that U.S. citizens are separated from their immediate relatives, thus reducing the financial and emotional hardship for these families."

The rule published today includes a summary of comments received by DHS on the proposed change during the comment period last year. It says most of the comments "came from supporters of the proposed rule who agreed that it would promote family unity." However, there were others who disagreed, including those who argued "that the Executive Branch did not have the legal authority to make the proposed changes without approval from Congress."

The rule then addresses the question of DHS's legal authority directly, stating, "The provisional unlawful presence waiver process is not a substantive change to the immigration laws but a procedural change in the way that a specific type of waiver application can be filed with USCIS." In other words, DHS is claiming this is a narrowly-tailored procedural change, not a change in national policy subject to Congress' oversight.

Looking over the last few months, it's not hard to determine that this rule change, like the one that instituted the DREAM act prior to the election, is about politics as much as procedure. In a supposedly off-the-record interview with the Des Moines Register in October, Obama said he would focus on immigration if reelected:

The second thing I’m confident we’ll get done next year is immigration reform. And since this is off the record, I will just be very blunt. Should I win a second term, a big reason I will win a second term is because the Republican nominee and the Republican Party have so alienated the fastest-growing demographic group in the country, the Latino community.

This rule change, which will take effect in 60 days, is part of Obama's attempt to honor the political bargain he made back in 2008 and reaffirmed again last year. While the careful wording of the DHS rule frames this as a matter of procedure rather than politics, those are just the necessary stories the administration is forced to tell in order to get this change done without Congressional oversight.

Biden ‘guarantees’ January passage of ‘strict gun control legislation’

Mayor Thomas Menino welcomes President Obama to Boston

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino said Vice President Joe Biden “guaranteed” that President Obama will pass strict gun control legislation by the end of the month, according to the Boston Herald.
“He said, ‘Tommy, I guarantee you, we’ll get it done by the end of January,’” Menino said. “They’re going to get it done.”

Menino, a proponent of strict gun control, co-chairs Mayors Against Illedal Guns with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Referring to the rash of urban young gang violence, “I understand the second amendment, the right to bear arms,” he said. “But I don’t understand how young kids should be able to get guns.”
Menino added that because the president is in his last term, he has “no excuse not to pass strong (gun control) legislation.”

“It’s time to get this moving and moving quickly,” Menino said. “Let’s do it now.”

Ask them why and they will say "it's for the children".

No, what is "For the Children" is to KEEP the second amendment, to train our boys and girls how to shoot, how to be safe and how to defend themselves against tyranny!

Mass. lawmakers weigh tough gun control measures

    By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

    January 04, 2013

BOSTON - Massachusetts lawmakers are weighing tougher gun control measures, from requiring gun owners to buy liability insurance to setting tighter standards for firearms licenses.
Although the push for new gun legislation comes in the wake of the school shootings in Newtown, Connecticut, those pushing for tighter rules say they're motivated more by the gun deaths that occur in Massachusetts on a routine basis.

State Rep. David Linsky, a Natick Democrat, said he plans to file by mid-January what he called a comprehensive bill to end gun violence. On Thursday, Linsky met with more than 100 lawmakers and legislative staffers of both parties to discuss possible measures.
"One thing was common throughout the room and that was an absolute commitment to end gun violence in Massachusetts," Linsky told reporters after the meeting.
Linsky said Massachusetts has no effective screening process to keep firearms out of the hands of those with serious mental illnesses. One possible option is to require individuals seeking a gun license - already needed to purchase a firearm - to sign a waiver giving access to their mental health history.
Linsky, a former prosecutor, said lawmakers are looking at other measures such as toughening rules for storage of firearms and possibly requiring gun owners to purchase liability insurance in the event that their firearms are used to harm another individual.
"You need liability insurance to drive a car in Massachusetts in case you get into an accident," Linsky said. "Well maybe you need liability insurance if that gun gets used and causes damage to somebody."
Gun rights advocates say lawmakers are focusing too much attention on law-abiding gun owners and not enough on criminals.
Jim Wallace, executive director of the Gun Owners Action League, said the state's guns laws are too convoluted and confusing. He said they need to be completely overhauled.
"Massachusetts gun laws have been an abject failure," he said.
Wallace said lawmakers have ignored his group's recommendations including the creation of what he called a "prohibited persons list" which he said would make it easier for police to quickly determine if a person can legally carry a firearm.
He said the list would include violent felons, illegal aliens and others.
Gov. Deval Patrick pushed lawmakers to take action in the days after the Newtown shootings.
Patrick had previously filed legislation that would restrict gun owners to purchasing one firearm a month and clamp down on so-called "straw purchasers" who buy guns legally and then resell them to convicted felons and others barred from owning guns.
Patrick said trying to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill is also a priority.
"We have got to figure a way both to have as robust a system of care for people who are suffering from mental health issues and a way to assure that that information is available to people who are selling guns so that we can keep them out of the wrong hands," Patrick said Thursday.
Patrick said there are other options, including increasing homeowner insurance for those who keep guns in their homes.
Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz, a Boston Democrat whose district includes Mattapan where four people - including a 2-year-old boy in his mother's arms - were shot to death in a drug-related robbery in 2010, said gun violence is an ongoing challenge.
Chang-Diaz said lawmakers also need to crack down on "the supply chain from the legal market to the illegal market" that can wreak havoc in urban areas across the state.
"We have great gun laws in Massachusetts and we have the results to show for it. Our gun deaths are relatively low." Chang-Diaz said. "But when we're looking at these numbers and these kinds of tragedies, we have to ask ourselves what else we can do."

South Texas: Illegal Aliens Are Coming in Larger Numbers

By Brenda Walker on January 1, 2013 at 12:30pm

In Washington, the official narrative from the White House and obsequious media is that the border thing is handled and therefore a mega-millions amnesty can proceed to turn invasive foreigners into Democrats.

NPR asked the question recently: Is The Border Secure Enough To Tackle The Immigration System? Naturally it concluded yes, with Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano stating that things were moving in the right direction.

Of course it’s a complete lie that the border is secure, as local ranchers have been saying all along. If it’s true that fewer Mexicans are breaking in, perhaps because of an improving economy at home, then there are plenty of Central Americans filling the gap. A December 22 report noted: Central America Edges Out Mexico for Leader in Undocumented Immigrants.

In case there is any doubt, the Police Chief of the Texas border town of La Joya recently remarked that he sees an increased level of illegal border crossing, in a season when many illegals are traveling south. Perhaps they are coming for the promised mega amnesty. . .

Local police chief says illegal immigration is on the rise, KGBT Television, Harlingen, Texas, December 26, 2012
The problem is not going away.

“Most of them have people here or they’re just trying to make it over here so they can start making a better living for themselves,” La Joya Police Chief Julian Gutierrez told Action 4 News.

No matter how many miles of border fence is erected—it seems nothing will stop the thousands of immigrants, crossing our border illegally, from continuing their journey.

“A lot of times we talk to them and ask them why they’re coming here,” Gutierrez explained. “They say they’re coming for the ‘American Dream.’ I always tell them that they’re here illegally—how do they expect to find work? They always say it’s a lot better than their country.”

Usually, this time of year, many immigrants will head back home to spend a few months with their families.

Come the end of January they make the journey back into the U.S.

But this year is different, Gutierrez said.

“It seems we’re seeing more people coming across and in bigger groups.”

Gutierrez said they are doing what they can to curb this growing problem.

They have stepped up patrol and are making sure those abandoned home in the city are monitored.

“We’re seeing that a lot of houses that we used to go to are boarded up or they have them fixed up to look like someone is living in them,” Gutierrez
    said. “That’s a big plus.”

But still, immigrants continue to push through.

It is something Gutierrez does not foresee stopping anytime soon.

Bullshit. If they were here for the "American Dream" we wouldn't have multitudes of generations unable to speak English, entire sections of the Southwestern US looking like Mexico, or tens of thousands of them on welfare while evading taxes working cash jobs and sending billions of dollars to Mexico per year.

They're just here to raid the US piggy bank for their own benefit, not contribute anything to American society.

BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Defense Minister Liang Guanglie met with delegates to the 1st China-Latin America high-level defense forum on Tuesday.

Liang hailed the increasingly close relations between China and Latin American countries in recent years, noting that the two sides have enjoyed frequent high-level visits, deepening political mutual trust, strengthening communication and cooperation, as well as effective coordination on major international affairs.

He said the forum shows that China attaches great importance to developing military relations with Latin American countries.

The forum has provided a platform for the two sides to communicate at the senior official level and will increase friendship and trust between the military leaders of both sides so as to develop future China-Latin American military relations, Liang said.

On behalf of the delegates, Pedro Siqueira, Uruguayan commander in chief of the army, said the forum has given Latin American countries more knowledge about China and it has also helped enhance communication between the militaries of both sides.

He expressed the hope that the Chinese military will pay more visits to Latin American countries in order to increase mutual understanding.

2013 Part 6: The Real Reason for Immigration Reform

    by John Galt
    January 29, 2013 23:00 ET

The Kerfuffle of the Day (KoD) created by the globalist extremist left and the politicians looking to consolidate power and destroy the American way of life is a new “immigration” program designed to provide a pathway to amnesty, aka, citizenship. The Republicans trotted out the usual suspects plus their most dynamic RINO, Marco Rubio, who has agreed to become the face of this new idea by putting the old guard of Senators McTraitor and Graham into the background while giving a perceived Latino flair to support an old tired program to grant amnesty for the corporate agricultural industry and the alleged besmirched illegals who violated U.S. law to take jobs from American citizens.

So the KoD isn’t big enough to catch my reader’s attention and most people will say something like “well, we need to have people who will do the job Americans won’t do.” Really? Does everyone who has more than two functioning brain cells actually believe that? The more nefarious purpose is one that extends far, far, beyond the typical excuse machine provided by American crony capitalists and those who wish to dilute and destroy the American way of life.

The current estimates for illegals is far, far, below the reality because the mainstream media, the political elites, and of course the conservatives all rely on estimates placing the number around 10 million:

    Source: ProCon.org

The good news is that as of 2009, the myth that there were was only 10 to 11 million illegals in the country was still being maintained, years after evidence indicated by several consulting firms that the number was already in excess of 15 million. The bad news is the methodology used by everyone, including the Department of Homeland Security to calculate the real number. This chart as of 2012 indicates a similar number of “undocumented aliens” which parallels with the mythology promoted by politicians and the mainstream media:

The source for the data above is the DHS but that is not the story; the lack of accounting for foreign aliens who have illegally overstayed their visas IS the key data point ignored by everyone. The problem with every piece of data provided by the government and mainstream media or any “think tank” with an agenda to promote an amnesty is that the statistic bypassed by everyone is the number of individuals who have illegally overstayed their visas which brings the total, conservatively in my opinion and some others, to well over 20 million illegals in the nation. Despite the economic downturn and return of some low-skilled individuals back to their native countries, primarily Mexico and other parts of Latin America, the staggering numbers reflect a potential for further abuse should an amnesty be granted and the families of those individuals given passage into the United States with the granting of a new type of accelerated path to citizenship for their relatives.

So why has this issue become so critical for the Obama administration, Democrats, and the Republican Party?

In one picture the answer for Obama and the Democrats is obvious:

That is the old 2012 electoral map provided by Politico.com using the nightmare scenario of what would happen should certain key so-called “purple” states turn solidly blue, or Democrat in their voting patterns. Imagine what would happen to the balance of power if Arizona, New Mexico, Florida, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Ohio, Colorado, Nevada, and most importantly, Texas were switched to the Democrat Party on an almost guaranteed permanent basis.

If the proposed amnesty plan endorsed by Senator Rubio and the usual suspects is passed, or an accelerated plan as proposed in vague terms by President Obama today would ultimately result in the ability of these illegals obtaining an even greater ability to abuse the election process as once a green card is obtained, most states will issue a drivers license and thus, using abuses of the Motor Voter Act, give them the opportunity to vote. With little appetite to offend the Latino population, the Republican Party will attempt to appease their new voters and in the end lose states which were solidly conservative in the process.

How does this benefit the Obama administration? Review this article from December 12, 2008 by World Net Daily’s Bob Unruh:

U.S. now only 2 states away from rewriting Constitution

A reminder of why this is crucial and the wording of the Article V of the U.S. Constitution:

The Congress, whenever two thirds of both houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose amendments to this Constitution, or, on the application of the legislatures of two thirds of the several states, shall call a convention for proposing amendments, which, in either case, shall be valid to all intents and purposes, as part of this Constitution, when ratified by the legislatures of three fourths of the several states, or by conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other mode of ratification may be proposed by the Congress; provided that no amendment which may be made prior to the year one thousand eight hundred and eight shall in any manner affect the first and fourth clauses in the ninth section of the first article; and that no state, without its consent, shall be deprived of its equal suffrage in the Senate.

Care to speculate how Obama could win a third or perhaps fourth term with a repeal of the 22nd Amendment? Look at the map above again and that question is answered. The Republicans would be most willing to accept and trade off with Obama for whatever period of time in exchange of massive financing from corporations, agricultural interests, and global bankers to allow the nation to undergo the stress of a Constitutional Convention and allow the Federal Reserve to become a codified permanent part of the founding infrastructure as a reduction in freedoms to current citizens to force compliance as America is consolidated within a larger global governing structure. The idea that the GOP stands for principle or American idealism died with “no new taxes” many years ago and the idiocy which followed during the highly corrupt period of the 1990′s. This opening provided what was needed for other interests outside of the U.S. to assist the wealthy elites in corrupting the system and providing the small window in history needed to bring the Republic to its knees and correct the errors of the original intent as perceived by the globalists.

With the destruction of any hint of obstruction to the establishment and implementation of a globalist system, the only obstruction was to dilute the population by increasing government dependency via inviting the lower echelon or non-skilled portions of Third World populations into the U.S. with the promise of government benefits in exchange for political favor. Both American political parties attempted to use their support mechanism to curry favor but in the end the Democratic Party understood the concept of buying votes with benefits in a manner far superior to some of the proposed lofty ideals of their Republican counterparts. This leaves our nation facing a danger crossroads where a megalomaniac President who wants to establish a lasting legacy of a quasi-Marxist state submissive to a global government is now a realistic possibility. A Constitutional Convention would empower this regime to accomplish this goal and provide the basis for a drastic rewrite of our nation’s founding document while eradicating those protections designed to prevent an imperial Presidency and the end of America’s traditions of freedom and equality for all.

Rep. Lamar Smith: Immigration Bill 'Worse Than We Thought,' Legalizes Relatives and Previously Deported

Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) said today that the Senate immigration bill is even worse than feared, since it legalizes illegals' relatives and even those previously deported:

"It's hard to believe, but the Senate immigration bill is worse than we thought. Despite assurances, the border is not secured before almost everyone in the country illegally is given amnesty. The bill guarantees there will be a rush across the border to take advantage of massive amnesty."

Rep. Smith says the Senate immigration bill shreds current immigration laws:

"And the Senate proposal offers amnesty to far more illegal immigrants than we thought. In addition to most of the 11 million illegal immigrants already in the country, the bill offers to legalize the relatives of illegal immigrants outside the U.S. and even others who have already been deported back home. So current immigration laws are shredded.

"The Senate bill is bad news for the American people. The good news is that the House Judiciary Committee will come up with a better plan that improves our immigration system and puts the interests of American workers first."

Immigration Bill Would Take Nearly Three Days To Read - Nonstop

    April 17, 2013

    By Craig Bannister

The 844 page Senate immigration bill (S. 744) creating a "pathway to citizenship" for illegal aliens was introduced overnight Wednesday morning prior to its one and only scheduled hearing Friday morning.

But, given the average person's reading speed, congressmen would need nearly three full days to read it - if they never stopped to eat, sleep, or do anything else.

Given that it takes the average reader a minimum of five minutes to read a page of technical information, a congressman would need 4,220 minutes to read the bill (5 x 844 = 4,220). Divide that by 60 minutes and you get 70.3 hours.

Divide 70.3 hours by 24, and it would take 2.93 days for a congressman to read the entire immigration bill - if he started and didn't stop until he finished.

So, will anyone actually read the entire immigration bill prior to the hearing - or even before voting on it?

History says "no," if you look at some of the previous long, important bills congressmen have admitted they didn't read before voting on them:

    • Obamacare,
    • The Stimulus,
    • Fiscal Cliff Deal,
    • $1.1 Trillion Omnibus Spending Bill
    • $280 Billion Continuing Resolution,
    • 2009 Climate Change Bill

Here's the full text of the bill, full text of the Senate Immigration Bill.pdf in case you want to see how long it takes you to read and understand it.

    DeMint vs. Rubio

    By Robert Costa
    April 18, 2013 9:23 AM

Nearly four years ago, in June 2009, then senator Jim DeMint endorsed Marco Rubio, an unknown, 38-year-old attorney, in Florida’s Republican Senate primary. It was huge news. Then GOP governor Charlie Crist was expected to waltz to the nomination, since he had the backing of most of the Republican establishment. DeMint’s endorsement led to a flurry of conservative interest in Rubio, who eventually landed on the cover of National Review and, of course, in the Senate. These days, however, that relationship is fraying, at least politically.

DeMint is now president of the Heritage Foundation and he’s battling Rubio’s push for comprehensive immigration reform. And the fight is only beginning.

In a new post on the Heritage website, DeMint rails against the Gang of Eight’s bill, saying it has a “significant cost” for taxpayers. “This new bill is much the same as the last [such bill in 2007]: immediate amnesty in the form of provisional status within months and lofty promises of ’strategies’ and ‘plans’ for enforcement years later,” he writes.

Though DeMint’s opposition alone is probably not enough to take down the bill, how Rubio navigates the growing chorus of critics will say much about its chances. Rubio, for his part, clearly takes the opposition seriously. He’s spending many hours this week huddling with conservative leaders, and later today, he’ll once again appear on a slew of conservative talk-radio programs. On Wednesday, he appeared on Mark Levin’s show, where he carefully explained the bill.

Will Rubio’s wooing be enough to win some more conservative supporters? We’ll see. But it’s fascinating to see how DeMint, once Rubio’s greatest ally, is now an important adversary during a critical moment in Rubio’s career.

I like the idea of an amendment that Jefferson had proposed during the authoring of the Bill of Rights and Constitution that any proposed law must remain on the table for 1 year before it can be voted on. That would solve so much of the legislative crap that goes on today.

Learned that bit of history from Mark Levin's show.

Eric Holder: Path to Earned Citizenship ‘A Matter of Civil and Human Rights’

Attorney General Eric Holder on Wednesday called creating a pathway to earned citizenship for illegal immigrants “a matter of civil and human rights.”

Speaking to the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Holder reiterated President Barack Obama’s call that it is “long past time” for fair, comprehensive immigration reform.

“Creating a pathway to earned citizenship for the 11 million unauthorized immigrants in this country is absolutely essential,” Holder said. “The way we treat our friends and neighbors who are undocumented, by creating a mechanism for them to earn citizenship and move out of the shadows, transcends the issue of immigration status. This is a matter of civil and human rights. It is about who we are as a nation. And it goes to the core of our treasured American principle of equal opportunity.”

Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), part of the group heading up immigration reform in the Senate, made it clear on Thursday that a final immigration deal must include a path to citizenship.

Faith Op-Ed in Farrakhan’s Nation of Islam Newspaper Lambastes Beck and TheBlaze — But Are the Odd Claims Accurate?

    Apr. 26, 2013 10:46am Billy Hallowell
In an article published this week on Final Call, the Nation of Islam’s (NOI) official news outlet, writer Jackie Muhammad defends the Minister Louis Farrakhan and claims that a Blaze news report from February treats the controversial faith leader unfairly.
Published by writer Jackie Muhammad, the piece, entitled, “A Memo to Glenn Beck…” takes aim at a story we wrote about Farrakhan encouraging African Americans to purchase land and to recruit gang members to protect NOI interests.

A screen shot from Final Call’s web site

Muhammad, writing directly to radio and television host Glenn Beck, dismisses TheBlaze coverage and claims that we were unwarranted in “ridiculing” the faith leader. Here’s how the writer began his article:

Recently you and your staff writer Billy Hallowell launched both a verbal and a written rant in which you ridiculed the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan’s call for the Black community to unify in order to address the myriad of ills that are plaguing our community. In his three-hour Saviours’ Day speech the Minister addressed the problems of poor spending habits, lax dietary habits, high unemployment, soaring dropout rates, inordinate consumption of illegal drugs and cigarettes, and our addiction to alcohol.
You erroneously charged the Minister with recruiting gang members “to ask them for assistance in protecting the Nation of Islam’s interests.” Your writer proceeded to quote a DNAinfo.com reporter, who wrote, “Farrakhan said he planned to contact the city’s (Chicago) gang leaders to recruit gang members to ‘protect’ any land the Nation of Islam might buy in the future.”
At the center of Muhammad’s angst was the notion that Farrakhan had made land ownership only a portion of the plan he outlined earlier this year. The writer charged TheBlaze with leaving out Farrakhan’s complete words on the matter, as Muhammad noted that the religious leader was calling “for a unity meeting with the leadership of the entire Black community.”

Louis Farrakhan speaks to a group of students from Macon County high schools and Tuskegee University at the Tuskegee campus in Tuskegee, Ala. on Friday March 22, 2013. Farrakhan’s visit is part of his ongoing series of speeches at historically black universities. He spoke last April at Alabama A&M University in Huntsville. Credit: AP

However, TheBlaze report, published on Feb. 15, 2013, explicitly highlighted the fact that the faith leader’s multifaceted speech was three hours long. And we also made it clear that it covered a multitude of subjects. Here are some portions from the original article (it’s important to note that some of the information in the previous piece comes from the Associated Press):

As is usually the case, the three-hour address covered a variety of topics ranging from current events to the faith leader’s contentious views on race relations. Of particular note was an economic plan he posited — one in which African Americans would come together to invest in land — and a pledge to reach out to gang leaders to ask them for assistance in protecting the Nation of Islam’s interests. [...]

Farrakhan touched briefly on other topics — Israel, Obama’s cabinet and healthier food consumption — but mostly reiterated teachings from the Chicago-based movement on a plan for blacks’ economic recovery and said the biggest priority should be the purchase of land.
As for the gang mentions, which seem to be a main area of focus of Muhammad’s contention, TheBlaze also noted that Farrakhan made his proposal about these individuals defending NOI interests “while simultaneously condemning them for needless violence.” Here, we made it clear in our coverage that Farrakhan voiced opposition to gang members’ violent actions.

Minister Louis Farrakhan speaks during the Saviours’ Day annual convention at the U.I.C. Pavilion in Chicago, Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013. Credit: AP

Muhammad went on to accuse TheBlaze of sensationalizing what Farrakhan said, but he added a caveat:

But for the sake of argument, what if he did do what you falsely and sensationally accused him of doing? Are you not aware of the crucial role gangs have played in the formation of nations, protecting citizens, coordinating and collaborating with sovereign governments to fight their common enemies, providing jobs to citizens, and in general helping to spur economic development in societies around the word?

For example, the notorious Stern Gang and the Irgun Gang were murderous, extremist, terrorist groups who helped to establish the Zionist Nation of Israel. The Jewish Stern Gang invited the aid of the Axis Powers (Germany, Japan, and Italy, the coalition of forces that opposed the Allied Powers in WWII), and sought to form an alliance with the Nazis. Among the more notorious acts of the Stern gang was the assassination of Lord Moyne, the British minister of state in the Middle East; the bombing of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, which killed over 90 people, and the Deir Yassin Massacre, where 260 innocent Palestinian men, women, and children were slaughtered in their peaceful Arab village of Deir Yassin. The leader of the Stern Gang was the well-known terrorist Manachem Begin. Mr. Begin later became the Prime Minister of Israel and a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.
He continued, providing a history lesson of “gangs” that have, in his view, seemingly progressed societies. After providing these examples, he, again, spoke directly to Beck, lambasting TheBlaze’s “ridicule” of Farrakhan, calling the coverage “deceitful and dishonest at worst.”
“Gang members have a viable role to play in the empowerment of our community; however, they and other members of our family will be enlisted not to engage in illegal or nefarious or violent behavior, but to ‘serve and protect’ a community that’s seeking and striving for a better quality of life,” Muhammad continued. “Who knows, some of the gang members who are seen as incorrigible gang bangers today may be tomorrow’s political leaders or Noble Peace Prize winners.”

Again, we laid Farrakhan’s words out clearly in TheBlaze article. In fact, we quoted him, showed video and were more-than-fair, as stated, in highlighting his critique of gang violence. Here are his comments word-for-word from his Saviours’ Day speech earlier this year (speaking, it seems, to gang members):

“We want to make you a defender of the territories that your nickels, dimes and dollars and hours will buy. You are the natural warriors to defend and the science of war must be taught to us so that we will protect whatever God allows us to buy or to build. The Second Amendment has no relevance to the black community in this sense — you don’t have legal weapons. All your weapons are illegal and you’re using them like a savage people would use them.”
    And here’s video footage:
It’s unclear why Muhammad chose to write a column for Final Call more than two months after TheBlaze report was published, but it is also equally confounding surrounding what, exactly, we are guilty of in merely sharing Farrakhan’s own words.

The confusion intensifies when one considers that the faith leader’s comments were also quickly ridiculed by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel in the wake of the speech. The Chicago Sun-Times covered the politician’s disagreement with Farrakhan on gangs, noting that Emanuel called the NOI leader’s suggestions problematic.

“No. I don’t think gang members are part of public safety. They are the problem. And it’s quite clear they’re the problem,” the mayor told the outlet. ”Legitimate, responsible citizens and residents of the city of Chicago are the ones who should be working with our police department, our principals, our schools [to offer] safe passage. I do not see a role at all for gang members.”

There was no mention of Emanuel’s comments in Muhammad’s article.

Biden: Amnesty for Illegals Is ‘Granting Them the Dignity and Respect They Deserve’

    May 9, 2013
    By Penny Starr

Vice President Joe Biden spoke at the 43rd annual Washington Conference on the Americas on May 8, 2013 in Washington, D.C. (CNSNews.com/Penny Starr)

(CNSNews.com) – Vice President Joe Biden said Wednesday that passing an immigration reform law that would give the estimated 11 million people in the country illegally a pathway to citizenship would be “granting them the dignity and respect they deserve.”

Speaking at the Conference on the Americas on Wednesday in Washington, D.C., Biden told attendees from countries throughout the Western Hemisphere that every nation has to make “tough choices.”

“In the United States, it means reforming our immigration system and 11 million undocumented men, women and children being able to come out of the shadows and be full participants in American life,” Biden said. “Imagine that - the dignity.

“My father would say, ‘it’s all about dignity,” Biden said. “Granting them the dignity and respect they deserve.”

Biden said not doing so would be disrespectful to the people living throughout the Americas.

“Because not doing that, it’s hard to make the case in my view, to six hundred million people in the hemisphere, that we genuinely respect you all,” Biden said. “When we do not show respect for 11 million people here in America who hail from the very countries we talk about respecting.

    “I don’t know how that’s done,” Biden said. “I don’t know how that’s done.

“That’s why we’re absolutely committed to genuine immigration reform,” he added.

The theme of the 43rd annual conference was “The United States and the Hemisphere: Opportunity and Growth,” and featured other officials from the Obama administration as well as Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, who spoke about the rule of law.
