What Amnesty For Illegal Immigrants Will Cost America

    May 6, 2013

The economist Milton Friedman warned that the United States cannot have open borders and an extensive welfare state. He was right, and his reasoning extends to amnesty for the more than 11 million unlawful immigrants in this country. In addition to being unfair to those who follow the law and encouraging more unlawful immigration in the future, amnesty has a substantial price tag.

An exhaustive study by the Heritage Foundation has found that after amnesty, current unlawful immigrants would receive $9.4 trillion in government benefits and services and pay more than $3 trillion in taxes over their lifetimes. That leaves a net fiscal deficit (benefits minus taxes) of $6.3 trillion. That deficit would have to be financed by increasing the government debt or raising taxes on U.S. citizens.

For centuries immigration has been vital to our nation’s health, and it will be essential to our future success. Yet immigrants should come to our nation lawfully and should not impose additional fiscal costs on our overburdened taxpayers. An efficient and merit-based system would help our economy and lessen the burden on taxpayers, strengthening our nation.

A properly structured lawful immigration system holds the potential to drive positive economic growth and job creation. But amnesty for those here unlawfully is not necessary to capture those benefits.

We estimate that when those who broke our laws to come here start having access to the same benefits as citizens do — as is called for by the Senate “Gang of Eight” immigration bill — the average unlawful immigrant household will receive nearly $3 in benefits for every dollar in taxes paid. The net annual cost is $28,000 per unlawful immigrant household.

Given the U.S. debt of $17 trillion, the fiscal effects detailed in our study should be at the forefront of legislators’ minds as they consider immigration reform.

Already, illegal immigrants impose costs on police, hospitals, schools and other services. Putting them on a path to citizenship means that within a few years, they will qualify for the full panoply of government programs: more than 80 means-tested welfare programs, as well as Social Security, Medicare and Obamacare. The lifetime fiscal cost (benefits received minus taxes paid) for the average unlawful immigrant after amnesty would be around $590,000. Who is going to pay that tab?

Our government is now in the business of redistribution. As Nicholas Eberstadt, an economist at the American Enterprise Institute, has pointed out, federal transfer payments, or taking from one American to give to another, grew from 3 percent of spending in 1935 to about two-thirds of all spending in 2010. Adding millions of unlawful immigrants to U.S. programs will have a massive negative fiscal effect.

Our findings are based on empirical research and reflect common sense. Unlawful immigrants have relatively low earning potential because, on average, they have 10th-grade educations and low skills. Heads of households like that, whether from the Midwest or Central America, will receive, on average, about four times as much in government services and benefits as they pay in taxes. Adding millions more to bloated welfare and overburdened entitlement programs would deepen the fiscal hole our country is in.

In addition to costing taxpayers, amnesty is unfair to those who came to this country lawfully. More than 4 million people are waiting to come to the United States lawfully, but our dysfunctional bureaucracy makes it easier to break the law than to follow it.

Our cost estimates are in some ways very conservative: The $6.3 trillion figure does not factor in the waves of unlawful immigrants who could pour into this country hoping for another future amnesty. As scholars at the Heritage Foundation and elsewhere have explained, the comprehensive immigration bill being considered in the Senate differs little from previous empty promises to secure our borders and enforce immigration laws on the books. When amnesty was granted under a similar plan in 1986, there were about 3 million unlawful immigrants; now we have more than 11 million.

Instead of forcing through a complicated, lengthy bill, Congress ought to advance piece-by-piece immigration solutions that enjoy broad support and build trust with the American people. We should move to streamline our legal immigration system, encourage patriotic assimilation to unite new immigrants with America’s vibrant civil society, fulfill promises to secure our borders and strengthen workplace enforcement.

We are proudly a nation of immigrants. People the world over are attracted to the United States because we are a nation of laws. Granting amnesty to those who broke the law and putting them on a path to citizenship would be unfair, would encourage more bad behavior and would impose significant costs on American families.

Revolt Among Republicans on Immigration Bill: 70 House Members Risk Careers in Planned Showdown With Leadership

    Jun. 13, 2013 9:29am Madeleine Morgenstern

UPDATE: Boehner has responded to a question regarding the procedure that those in his caucus are planning on using to fight the bill. You can red what he said in our follow-up story.

Seventy House Republicans are planning a politically risky showdown with Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) to try to force additional debate on an immigration bill they say will mean amnesty for illegal immigrants and have dire consequences for the country.

The 70 members are petitioning for a special Republican conference meeting on the bill, a “highly unusual” move to go head-to-head with the speaker, according to Reps. Michele Bachmann (Minn.), Steve King (Iowa) and Louie Gohmert (Texas), who are serving as spokespersons for the group.

    Getty Images

Bachmann, King and Gohmert told TheBlaze the group is invoking the Hastert Rule: requiring support from a majority of the majority to bring a bill forward.

The petition is expected to go to the House leadership on Friday, but it’s possible some signatories might remove their names due to political risk, or that Boehner could head off the challenge by striking a deal. Going against leadership in such a way could have harsh political consequences for the signatories, including retaliation such as permanently getting passed over for chairmanship positions.

We will be discussing this story and all the day’s news on our live BlazeCast beginning at 2 pm ET:

A Boehner spokesman did not immediately comment on the letter.

Boehner is on a tight schedule for getting immigration reform passed in the House, predicting this week that Congress could finalize a bill for President Barack Obama’s signature by the end of the year. Any major challenge could ignite pushback from the American public that could force lawmakers to scrap the bill, as happened in the 2007 immigration effort.

The three representatives told TheBlaze that more than half of the Republicans in the House were elected after 2007, and have no concept of how strongly the public opposed the bill.

In an interview with World Net Daily this week, Bachmann predicted that if the immigration bill becomes law, “the whole political system will change.”

“This is President Obama’s number one political agenda item because he knows we will never again have a Republican president, ever, if amnesty goes into effect. We will perpetually have a progressive, liberal president, probably a Democrat, and we will probably see the House of Representatives go into Democrat hands and the Senate will stay in Democrat hands,” Bachmann said.

She also said that if it passes, the bill will create a permanent progressive class.

“That’s what’s at risk right now. It may sound melodramatic, I don’t mean it that way, but this is that big and that important,” Bachmann said.

Schumer predicts mass demonstrations if House blocks path to citizenship

By Alexander Bolton - 06/23/13 10:00 AM ET

A senior Democratic senator predicted Sunday there could be massive demonstrations in Washington if House Republicans try to block a bill to grant legal status to millions of immigrants.

Sen. Charles Schumer (N.Y.), the lead Democratic sponsor of the Senate immigration reform bill, said House Republicans would likely spark massive civil rights rallies if they try to quash measures to create a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants already in the country.

“This has the potential of becoming the next major civil rights movement. I could envision in the late summer or early fall if Boehner tries to bottle the bill up or put something in without a path to citizenship — if there’s no path to citizenship, there’s not a bill — but if he tries to bottle it up or do things like that, I could see a million people on the Mall in Washington,” Schumer said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”Schumer said business leaders, evangelical leaders and CEOs of high tech companies would join the public call for action by the House on immigration.

Schumer has counted about 67 votes for the Senate immigration bill and believes close to 70 will support final passage later this week.

“I do believe that having a significant number of Republicans will change the dynamic in the House.

Individual Congress members from red districts, if they see their senators voted for it and they decide to do the right thing, there will be huge pressure on [Speaker John] Boehner [R-Ohio] not to block immigration reform,” said Schumer.

Schumer predicted that Boehner will have to bring legislation very similar to the Senate bill to the House floor, even if a majority of his conference would not support it.

“He will have no choice as the pressure mounts over the summer,” Schumer added.

He said Boehner would have to abandon the so-called Hastert Rule and bring legislation granting legal status to millions of illegal immigrants even if less than half of the House GOP conference is willing to vote for it.

The crowd stretched two and half miles, from Union Park on the West Side to their rally destination in Federal Plaza.

The march was one of the largest street protests Chicago has ever seen — exceeding the historic May 1, 1886 march down Michigan Ave. by 80,000 largely immigrant workers demanding an eight-hour workday. Read more | Democracy Now! coverage

Lucas Jackson / Reuters Thousands of demonstrators gather Saturday in the streets of downtown Los Angeles to protest legislation that cracks down against illegal immigrants.

    updated 3/25/2006 11:50:33 PM ET

LOS ANGELES — They surprised the police, and maybe themselves, their T-shirts turning block after block of downtown Los Angeles streets white in a demonstration so massive that few causes in recent U.S. history have matched it.

Police said more than 500,000 people marched Saturday to protest a proposed federal crackdown on illegal immigration. Wearing white as a sign of peace, and waving flags from the U.S., Mexico, Guatemala and other countries, they came to show that illegal immigrants already are part of the American fabric, and want the chance to be legal, law-abiding citizens.

Police used helicopters to come up with the crowd estimate. “I’ve been on the force 38 years and I’ve never seen a rally this big,” said Cmdr. Louis Gray Jr., incident commander for the rally.

In Denver, more than 50,000 people protested downtown Saturday, according to police who had expected only a few thousand. Phoenix was similarly surprised Friday when an estimated 20,000 people gathered for one of the biggest demonstrations in city history, and more than 10,000 marched in Milwaukee on Thursday.

IMMIGRATION: May Day protest in San Bernardino

There are two very different major immigration-related events this week in Southern California.

On Tuesday, two of the eight sponsors of a Senate immigration-reform bill will speak at a USC forum.

Sens. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., and John McCain, R-Ariz., will be joined by former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, former Mexican President Vicente Fox, former U.S. Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez and Dowell Myers, a professor of public policy at USC.

The event, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., will be streamed live at priceschool.usc.edu.
The next day, immigration protests will take place across the country, including in San Bernardino.
May Day is a longtime workers’ holiday around the world and has been a date for immigrant-rights protests since 2006.

Demonstrations have been smaller in recent years than in 2006. But Wednesday may see large protests because undocumented immigrants and their supporters are fired up by what many see as the best chance in many years for immigration reform with a path to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants.

The difference between the USC event and the street protests will not only be in tone but in substance.

Many grass-roots immigration activists are unhappy with key elements of the Senate immigration bill, including a 13-year wait for potential citizenship for undocumented immigrants – which many activists view as excessive – and a trigger mechanism in the bill that makes a path to citizenship dependent on the implementation of stringent border-security measures.

The Inland demonstration begins at 11 a.m. at Secombe Lake in San Bernardino and will end at San Bernardino City Hall. The march and rally also will call for laws that better protect workers and will call attention to economic disparities in San Bernardino.

Justice for Immigrants Coalition of Inland Southern California is spearheading the event.

San Bernardino was chosen in part because it is in the district of Rep. Gary Miller, a Republican who has been pressured heavily by immigrant-rights activists to support a path to citizenship, and because of San Bernardino’s recent bankruptcy filing and high unemployment levels.

    By Marina Villeneuve June 27, 2013, 5:39 p.m.

WASHINGTON -- As the Senate passed the immigration reform bill, a protester dressed in a blue cap and graduation gown stood up in the visitor gallery and chanted, "Si se puede!" Other activists dressed in turquoise and orange shirts joined in with the chant, which in English means, "Yes we can!" Some chanted, "Yes we can" in English as well.

Maria Cabello, who was sitting nearby, said she was thinking of her parents, who emigrated with her from Mexico to Texas 10 years ago.

U.S. immigration law: Decades of debate

"They're undocumented," said Cabello, who works with the United We Dream advocacy group. "Now they're one step closer to getting citizenship, and my mom might get to see her parents again."

Cabello benefited from President Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy in October, which grants two-year deportation deferrals and work permits for immigrants brought into the U.S. illegally as children.

She said despite her disapproval of several amendments in the Senate bill, which passed 68 to 32, she has hopes for the House vote.

The bill calls for $46 billion in extra border security and also provides a pathway to citizenship for the estimated 11 million people who entered the country illegally or overstayed their visas.

"The Senate bill had a lot of outrageous amendments," she said. "So we'll be pushing harder so the House knows that we will not support a bill blocking our pathway to citizenship, that keeps our families from being together, or that keeps militarizing our border."

Adrienne DerVartanian of the advocacy group Farmworker Justice said she was pleased with the vote, particularly with the inclusion of an amendment affecting agricultural workers.

"We don't think the bill is perfect," she said. "There were concessions, compromises made. We're looking forward to the next step -- it's important that it addresses our agricultural system, which is broken."

Melvin Alvarez of Alexandria, Va., said he was a bit scared of the bill's prospects.

"My family and I are legal residents, and I am truly lucky," said Alvarez, who is originally from Honduras. "But I go to high school with a lot of international students who are much brighter than me, and I could go on to higher education and they couldn't. It's just that paper that makes the difference."

Alvarez said the deferred deportation program allowed his friends to go back to school, and that if the House passed the Senate bill, "it will let them keep being able to do so."

For Alberto Morales, born in Chicago and the son of immigrants from Mexico, it was a historic moment.

"Bipartisanship is truly rare in this Congress, and to see such leadership was fantastic, especially from the Republican leadership that stepped up to the plate," said Morales, a student at Georgetown University. Fourteen Republican senators supported the bill.

Rubio: Legalize Illegal Immigrants So They Can Fund Border Security

    June 14, 2013

On Thursday, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) said one reason illegal immigrants must be legalized as soon as possible is so they can help fund border security measures by paying taxes and fines.

During an interview on "The Andrea Tantaros Show," Rubio, as Byron York points out, first said there was no choice but to legalize at least 11 million illegal immigrants because he said the country "cannot wait another four years" to enact immigration reform.

He then said illegal immigrants needed to be registered "as soon as possible" so the fines they pay into the system help fund border security programs.

“We need to register them as soon as possible, not just to keep the problem from getting worse, but we’re going to require them to pay a fine, and that’s the money that we are going to use to pay for the border security,” Rubio, said, according to York. “If we don’t get that fine money from the people that have violated our immigration laws, then the American taxpayer is going to have to pay for border security.”

Rubio, a prominent Republican on the Senate's Gang of Eight with Sens. John McCain (R-AZ) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC), said if illegal immigrants are not legalized, "we’re going to end up borrowing money like we do now for 40 cents out of every dollar, and I want to prevent that from happening.”

Immigration experts, though, note that some illegal immigrants may be able to apply for fee waivers in order to avoid fines. In addition, the IRS may have difficulty figuring out how much back taxes illegal immigrants owe. And finally, some nonprofit agencies may even receive taxpayer dollars that presumably should be used to fund some border security programs in order to help illegal immigrants pay their fines to get legalized.

Jeb Bush: U.S. Economy Needs Immigrants Because They’re ‘More Fertile’

    June 14, 2013

Former Florida governor Jeb Bush (R) argued Wednesday that the United States should pass immigration reform because the U.S. economy needs the labor of young immigrants, and immigrants are “more fertile.”

“Immigrants create far more businesses than native-born Americans,” Bush said at the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s Road to the Majority conference. “Immigrants are more fertile, and they love families, and they have more intact families, and they bring a younger population. Immigrants create an engine of economic prosperity.”

Bush said immigrants are an advantage that the United States has over China, Europe and Japan, which don’t have the same immigrant tradition and are struggling to find young laborers.

“If we don’t do it, we will be in decline, because the productivity of this country is dependent upon young people that are equipped to be able to work hard,” Bush said.

Bush, whose wife is a Mexican-born immigrant, has long been an advocate for comprehensive immigration reform.

A Census report released Thursday showed that, for the first time, white deaths in the United States outnumbered white births. Population grew because of growth among Hispanics, African-Americans and immigrants.

Estimate Shows Wages Would Drop Under Senate Immigration Bill, Despite Economic Uptick

    June 19, 2013

While supporters of the Senate immigration bill tout a new analysis that shows the legislation would boost the economy and trim the deficit, critics are seizing on another, less rosy stat -- the average American wage would drop, and not recover for more than a decade.

The analysis from the Congressional Budget Office projected that, if the Senate bill passes, the influx of new immigrants would have the effect of slightly bringing down the average wage. Specifically, the estimate showed average wages for the entire labor force "would be 0.1 percent lower in 2023."

It would affect lower- and higher-skilled workers more than those in the middle of the spectrum.

The detail, included in a catalog of more positive statistics, was not lost on one of the bill's chief critics, Sen. Jeff Sessions, whose office blasted out the projection as evidence the bill would hurt the workforce.

"The wages of U.S. workers -- which should be growing -- will instead decline," Sessions, R-Ala., said. "It would be the biggest setback for poor and middle-class Americans of any legislation Congress has considered in decades."

Democrats, and some conservatives, disagree strongly with Sessions on that point. The CBO estimated that the bill would actually boost the economy -- or gross domestic product -- by 3.3 percent over the next decade, and by 5.4 percent the decade after that.

Wages would eventually rise, the office said, but not for roughly a dozen years. Effectively, the CBO said it would take time for the economy to catch up with the influx of workers.

"As the labor supply initially increased under the legislation, less capital would be available for each worker to produce output, and thus workers' output, on average, would be lower for a time. That decline would reduce average wages relative to those under current law," the report said.

Further, the changes would "cause the unemployment rate to be slightly higher for several years."

The CBO offered several caveats. First, it clarified that not all current U.S. residents would be worse off. Part of the decrease in wages would be attributed to new and lower-wage earners entering the economy -- which mathematically brings down the average wage.

And the report specified that the biggest impact would be felt for those workers at the low and high end of the spectrum, since immigration is typically greatest among least- and most-skilled workers.

In short, the CBO estimated that by 2033, those in the middle of the spectrum -- a mix of high school and college graduates -- would see a slight increase. However, those at the top and bottom of the income scale would still see a slight decrease.

At the same time, the 8 million or so unauthorized workers projected to gain legal status under the bill would on average see an increase in their wages, since they'd have access to better jobs.

The CBO report is considered a vital piece of evidence for both sides of the debate, as the Senate and House push separate immigration packages.
Supporters hailed its estimate that the bill would boost the economy, and reduce the deficit by $197 billion over 10 years.

Douglas Holtz-Eakin, a conservative economist and former CBO director, said the estimate shows "that reform is an economic policy opportunity."

"With Washington broke and America stuck in a jobless recovery, the CBO report proves that immigration reform would be an unambiguous policy trifecta: higher growth, significantly reduced deficits, and a rational labor policy. This should put to rest any legitimate debate about the economic and fiscal implications of responsible immigration reform," he said.

While the Senate continued to debate its bill, a House panel on Tuesday approved its own version of immigration legislation, which has a stronger focus on enforcement.

Former President George W. Bush hails push for comprehensive immigration reform

    • By S.A. MILLER, Post Correspondent
    • Last Updated: 10:53 AM, July 7, 2013

WASHINGTON – Former President George W. Bush today cheered on the “progress” in pushing comprehensive immigration reform through Congress.

“The legislative process can be ugly,” Bush said with a chuckle in an interview aired today on ABC’s “This Week.” “But it looks like they're making some progress.”

“It's very important to fix a broken system, to treat people with respect, and have confidence in our capacity to assimilate people,” said the former president. “It's a very difficult bill to pass because there's a lot of moving parts.”

Bush’s 2007 immigration reform bill, which included a path to citizenship for illegal aliens, was killed by his own Senate Republicans who denounced it as “amnesty.”

The same “amnesty” charge has been leveled at the current bill that overwhelmingly passed the Senate but now faces an uncertain fate in the GOP-run House.

“I understand sometimes you can’t get legislation through that you want. I was also frustrated we didn't pass social security reform,” he said. “ I thought the plan I'd laid out on both was reasonable. But sometimes it takes time for some of these complex issues to evolve. And it looks like immigration [reform] has a chance to pass.”

Bush dismissed arguments that the Republican Party must back the immigration overhaul in order to win over Latino voters.

“The reason to pass immigration reform is not to bolster a a Republican Party. It's to fix a system that's broken. Good policy yields good politics as far as I'm concerned,” he said.

Immigrants account for all job gains since 2000: native-born workers’ employment has fallen

    By Stephen Dinan
    -
    The Washington Times
    Wednesday, July 3, 2013

Immigrants — both legal and illegal — have accounted for all of the job gains in the U.S. labor market since 2000, according to a report that highlights the stiff competition for jobs in a tight economy as Congress debates adding more workers to the mix.

The Center for Immigration Studies report, which is being released Wednesday, says 22.4 million immigrants of working age held jobs at the beginning of this year, up 5.3 million over the total in 2000. But native-born workers with jobs dropped 1.3 million over that same period, from 114.8 million to 113.5 million.

Meanwhile, the number of Americans who aren’t in the labor force at all has jumped by almost 13 million to reach 48.6 million — a finding the report’s authors say signals profound changes in the American job market and challenges conventional wisdom that immigration is good for the economy.

“The last 13 years, or even the last five years, make clear that large-scale immigration can go hand-in-hand with weak job growth and declining rates of work among the native-born,” the authors, Steven A. Camarota and Karen Zeigler, say in their report. “Given the employment situation in the country, the dramatic increases in legal immigration contemplated by the Gang of Eight immigration bill seem out of touch with the realities of the U.S. labor market.”

Whether immigrants compete for jobs is a heated topic — though the Senate all but ignored it during the chamber’s debate on its bill to legalize most illegal immigrants and create opportunities for new immigrants and temporary workers to enter the U.S.

    Enlarge Photo

The outlines of those programs are coming into view. The Congressional Budget Office calculated that boosts in immigration and guest-worker programs would add about 12 million new people to the U.S. in 2023, in addition to millions of illegal immigrants who would gain legal status and work permits.

Overall, CBO said those added workers will help the U.S. economy, though the effect on wages is more complex. At the high-skilled and low-skilled ends there may be some slight wage slippage, CBO found, but wages for those in the middle would go up.

Still, what that means for individual workers is hotly debated outside Congress.

Alex Nowrasteh, immigration policy analyst at the Cato Institute, said the latest research suggests there isn’t actually much competition for jobs between immigrants and native-born workers, particularly at the low-skilled level, because even there, both groups end up specializing.

He pointed to the example of a restaurant, where poor English might push low-skilled foreign workers toward jobs washing dishes or cleaning up, while native-born workers would specialize in jobs that require communications, such as waiting on tables.

Mr. Nowrasteh hadn’t seen the latest Center for Immigration Studies report but questioned the numbers in a previous version, saying he had been unable to duplicate them in his own research.

Mr. Camarota defended his numbers, saying they came straight from the Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey and that he used the same definitions of native-born and foreign-born that the CPS uses.

While the debate rages outside Congress, it was muted in the Senate where the chamber cleared its bill on a 68-32 vote last week.

In 2006 and 2007, the previous two times the Senate debated a broad immigration bill, the competition between native-born and immigrants was a major focus — and helped sink the 2007 effort when Democrats pushed an amendment cutting the guest-worker program in half.

Mr. Nowrasteh said this time around, that debate was transferred to closed-door negotiations — chiefly a deal between the AFL-CIO and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on how to construct the future immigration and guest-worker parts of the bill.

Morning Bell: Obama Grants Amnesty to Illegal Immigrants Without Congress

Congress hasn’t passed immigration legislation, but that hasn’t stopped President Obama from issuing directives that grant amnesty to illegal immigrants.

Last week, the Obama Administration issued the latest in a line of policy directives granting amnesty by default. This latest directive instructs Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials not to enforce immigration laws in cases where an illegal alien is the primary provider for any minor child—regardless of the child’s immigration status—or the parent or guardian of a child who is a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.

In a statement about the new directive, House Judiciary Committee chairman Bob Goodlatte (R–VA) declared:

President Obama has once again abused his authority and unilaterally refused to enforce our current immigration laws by directing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to stop removing broad categories of unlawful immigrants.
In June of last year, the Obama Administration’s Department of Homeland Security issued a memorandum telling U.S. immigration officials how they should “enforce the Nation’s immigration laws against certain young people who were brought to this country as children and know only this country as home.” The move essentially served to implement major portions of the DREAM Act—which has been introduced and failed in Congress more than 30 times—by executive fiat.

Efforts to preserve and protect families are important considerations when it comes to immigration reform. Heritage has often argued that “strong families are priceless, providing an abundance of benefits to both adults and children and creating the bonds of strong societies.” Any such effort, however, should be not only compassionate but also fair and respectful of the rule of law. As we’ve said before:

A proper solution would uphold the principles of immigration reform and not open the door to a blanket amnesty. Finding an actual solution through the legislative process would give the law legitimacy and more permanency, and it might even result in a bipartisan agreement.… In our system of government, Congress is the legislative branch and is responsible for making the laws.

Presidents are supposed to “faithfully execute” the laws to the best of their ability, not reshape them to suit their own policy goals.
Instead, fixing America’s broken immigration system requires a more thoughtful approach. Neither sweeping executive action nor a massive, do-it-all-at-once bill offers truly meaningful reform. In fact, any path that promises amnesty would only make matters worse.

There is a better way forward—a practical, fair, and responsible path to address the nation’s broken borders and immigration mess. If only Congress and the Administration would listen.

It seems to me that supplanting the existing citizens with those from less civilized parts of the world is how Rome fell.

Remember that when Rome took over, everyone became Roman citizens, or slaves... either way, the men were pressed into service for the Empire in the military.

Those that didn't go along to get along got fed to the lions, killed in "the Games" or became slaves.

It comes down to our own government softening our immigration laws, opening the borders and allowing this shit to happen.

If Americans on the borders were smart, they would close down the borders on their own without the help of the US government, ignoring Federal laws completely. If they started just shooting illegal border crossers (and anyone else getting in their way) then the borders would close quickly.

Obama promises huge gain from immigration — that benefits only immigrants

President Barack Obama claimed on Thursday that an immigration boost would increase the nation’s economy by five percent after 20 years — but he declined to mention that the extra money would go to the 16 million new immigrants, and to employers and the government, but not to American workers or current immigrants.

“A five percent growth in GDP and a five percent growth in population, mathematically means zero net gain” to Americans and current immigrants, said Steven Camarota, the research director at the Center for Immigration Studies.

“It’s not rocket science — it has to come out that way,” he told The Daily Caller.

Obama’s forecast of a 5 percent economic was unusual, because his speeches and White House statements generally avoid using numbers or percentages.

“Economists estimate that if that bill becomes law, our economy would be 5 percent larger two decades from now. That’s $1.4 trillion in new economic growth,” he said.

Obama made his forecast during a speech intended to capitalize on his partisan victory in the October government shutdown battle. He used the event to urge Democrats and Republicans to rally around his goals of increased spending, higher taxes and more immigration. (RELATED: Obama spokesman promises more taxes, spending and immigration)

But he generally avoids using statistics that might allow his critics to undermine his forecasts and claims.

For example, Obama also used his Thursday statement to push for a fairer tax system, and for more government spending on schools and infrastructure.

But he declined to put any dollar numbers on his tax and spending increase goals.

Similarly, Obama also said the nation’s deficit is decreasing, but he declined to say how much the deficit is now, how much it was in 2010 or how much it would be increased by extra federal spending he’s trying to win.

Obama’s forecast of a five percent economic boost from immigration comes from a June report by the Congressional Budget Office.

The office also predicted the bill would increase the population would rise by 4.2 percent, or by 16 million, in 2033.

The CBO forecast, however, may understate the population growth, because it assumed that only half of the current 11.5 million illegals would stay in the country.

When combined with existing immigration rules, the Senate bill would provide residency to 33 million illegal and new immigrants over the next 10 years, according to estimates by groups that favor and oppose high levels of immigration. Current immigration rules annually bring in 1 million people, very few of whom have any technical skills.

Soros-Funded Group Plans 'Fly-In' to Push House Republicans on Amnesty

    by Matthew Boyle18 Oct 2013
    http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Governm...r-amnesty-deal

The George Soros-funded National Immigration Forum (NIF) is organizing a “fly-in” of what it calls conservatives from across the country aimed at lobbying House Republicans for an amnesty bill.

According to USA Today’s immigration beat writer Alan Gomez, NIF is planning to organize the fly in with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg’s FWD.us, and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Partnership for a New American Economy.

“The fly-in is being organized not by conservative groups, but organizations that have focused on legalizing millions of people who are in the U.S. illegally and changing the legal immigration system to bring in more foreign workers,” Gomez wrote on Monday. He noted that the 300 activists for an immigration grand bargain were looking to make what he described as a “conservative pitch” for amnesty.

Gomez noted NIF’s Executive Director, Ali Noorani, who “has advocated for changes in immigration law to help legal and undocumented immigrants for three decades," claimed "the broad collection coming to Washington represents 'the conservative base of the Republican Party.'"

The event will take place on Oct. 28, coinciding with President Barack Obama’s and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s renewed push against House Speaker John Boehner for amnesty. Now that Obama, Reid, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi are publicly pushing for amnesty after many mainstream media outlets declared it dead earlier this year, Soros’ groups are trying to make it appear as though conservatives support immigration legislation like the Senate-passed “Gang of Eight” bill. Ultimately, the left’s goal is to get the House to pass a series of piecemeal immigration bills and then combine them with the Senate bill in a conference committee.

Soros is heavily involved in funding the lobbying for amnesty. After Breitbart News exposed NIF for being Soros-funded while running a campaign to make it appear as though evangelicals support granting amnesty to illegal immigrants, Noorani admitted his group accepts funding from Soros. Noorani denies that the funding was being used for the Evangelical Immigration Table (EIT), a project that his group runs the operations of, but admits that millions of NIF’s dollars come from Soros and that about 10 percent of its budget this year comes from the leftwing billionaire.

Soros is also intimately connected to Facebook’s Zuckerberg’s FWD.us push for amnesty. Zuckerberg hired Soros’ former chief financial strategist Stanley Druckenmiller. Druckenmiller served as Soros’ chief strategist for more than a decade.

Mitt Romney's top 2012 campaign donor, Wall Street hedge fund manager Paul Singer, also funds NIF, as Breitbart News has reported.

Pelosi calls for Obama to halt deportations

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi privately has urged the Obama administration to halt deportations for some illegal immigrants, saying that President Obama needs to use more “discretion” to reduce the number of people he’s kicking out of the country.

In an interview with Telemundo over the weekend, Mrs. Pelosi said that just being in the country illegally is not enough of a reason to be deported, and she said illegal immigrants must have something more serious on their records.

“Our view of the law is that it — if somebody is here without sufficient documentation, that is not reason for deportation,” she said in the interview, which an immigrant-rights group posted on its website. “If somebody has broken the law, committed a felony or something, that’s a different story.”

Drew Hammill, Mrs. Pelosi’s spokesman, said her comments are “a restatement of her long-held belief that being an undocumented immigrant is not a basis for deportation.”

He said Mrs. Pelosi would prefer, however, to pass a new law legalizing illegal immigrants in order to clear up the legal status.

Federal law generally does say that those who are in the country without authorization — either because they jumped the border or have overstayed their visas — are deportable.

But Mr. Obama has claimed broad discretion to decide whom to deport out of the 11 million illegal immigrants estimated to be in the country, arguing that Congress only appropriated enough money to deport about 400,000 people a year and so he must pick and choose whom to deport.

Homeland Security officials argue that nearly all of those they deport do meet one of their priority categories of having a criminal record or having previously been deported and returned to the U.S. in violation of that removal.

In her interview with Telemundo, Mrs. Pelosi said she disputes that, saying she’s appeared alongside some of those she said shouldn’t have been deported.

“We have seen the personal stories, and we presented them to the administration,” she said. “I’m hopeful that with the documentation that we are providing to counter what others may be saying about who’s being deported, that we will see action from the president.”

Still, Mrs. Pelosi said she is not sure whether Mr. Obama has the authority to grant a broad suspension of deportations for parents of so-called Dreamers, the illegal immigrants whom the president already carved out of danger of deportation in an executive action last year.

“I don’t know whether he has the authority,” Mrs. Pelosi, California Democrat, said. “But I think that there is discretion in the law as to the implementation, enforcement of the legislation that is calling for these deportations.”
