"Statement as of 12:08 PM EST on January 18, 2008

... Winter Weather Advisory now in effect from 4 PM this afternoon
    to 10 am EST Sunday...

The Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect from 4 PM this
afternoon to 10 am EST Sunday.

Local accumulations of 3 to 5 inches can be expected
tonight... with snow persisting through Sunday morning. Additional
accumulation of snow is expected on Saturday and Saturday night as
well. 1 to 3 inch amounts are expected on Saturday with another 3
to 5 inches locally on Saturday night. Some areas may see
accumulations approach a foot over a two day period.

Some blowing and drifting snow can be expected as well with
westerly winds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts to near 25 mph blowing
around the fine powdery snow. Wind chill values will dip into the
5 to 15 below zero range much of the next two days.

Given the nature of lake effect snow... accumulations will vary
greatly from place to place in the advisory area. Heaviest snow
totals will be west of Highway 131 toward the Lakeshore. Be
prepared for changeable visibilities as snow bands work through the
area. Dress in layers as wind chill values in the 5 to 15 below
zero range will create dangerous conditions if you are outside for
    prolonged periods."

Damn, and me out of suntan lotion..... Guess I skip the beach today.

Antarctic Volcanoes Identified As A Possible Culprit In Glacier Melting
Another factor might be contributing to the thinning of some of the Antarctica's glaciers: volcanoes.

In an article published Sunday on the Web site of the journal Nature Geoscience, Hugh Corr and David Vaughan of the British Antarctic Survey report the identification of a layer of volcanic ash and glass shards frozen within an ice sheet in western Antarctica.

"This is the first time we have seen a volcano beneath the ice sheet punch a hole through the ice sheet" in Antarctica, Vaughan said.

Volcanic heat could still be melting ice to water and contributing to thinning and speeding up of the Pine Island glacier, which passes nearby, but Vaughan said he doubted that it could be affecting other glaciers in western Antarctica, which have also thinned in recent years. Most glaciologists, including Vaughan, say that warmer ocean water is the primary cause of thinning.

Volcanically, Antarctica is a fairly quiet place. But sometime around 325 B.C., the researchers said, a hidden and still active volcano erupted, puncturing several hundred yards of ice above it. Ash and shards from the volcano carried through the air and settled onto the surrounding landscape. That layer is now out of sight, hidden beneath the snows that fell during the next 2,300 years.

Still, the layer showed up clearly in airborne radar surveys conducted over the region in 2004 and 2005 by American and British scientists. The reflected radio waves over an elliptical area about 110 miles, or 176 kilometers, wide were so strong that earlier radar surveys had mistakenly identified it as bedrock. Better radar techniques now can detect a second echo from the actual bedrock farther down.

The thickness of ice above the ash layer provided an estimate of the date of the eruption: 207 B.C., give or take 240 years. "It's probably within Alexander the Great's lifetime, but not more precise than that," Vaughan said.

The Best Global Warming Videos On The Internet - Part IV: Short Videos (Vanity)

The Best Global Warming Videos on the Internet

Some people have asked me for copies of, or links to videos that provide an alternative view to Gore’s “consensus” on anthropogenic (i.e., man caused) global warming (AGW). A few of these videos have been broadcast in the United States (e.g., Glenn Beck, John Stossel), but most have not and probably will not be seen. Fortunately, we have the

    Internet to make these available.

Part I: Documentaries is available here

Part II: Lectures is available here

Part III: Debates is available here

    Part IV: Short Videos

Cheap Sensationalism in Gore’s Slide Show (8:14)

This is an interesting break down of a few of the dishonest ways Gore tries to scare people with his slide show.

    Link

    How to Cut Emissions (1:30)

This BBC clip shows just what you have to do to cut your carbon emissions. No heat. No electronics. No flying. No car. Sure.

    Link

Senator Jim Inhofe Responds To Kennedy’s Live Earth Treason Call (3:27)

Robert Kennedy at Live Earth pretty much called everyone who disagrees with him traitors in the pockets of oil companies. Neil Cavuto plays the clip and Senator Inhofe responds.
    Link

Inhofe Points Out Environmental Hypocrisy On “Fox & Friends” (3:30) Jim Inhofe notes that Sheryl Crow said it’s okay to use more than one sheet of toilet paper for a “serious” problem and fortunately, didn’t define what she considers a serious problem. Inhofe notes that Dennis Hays, a co-founder of earth day, said he finds it offensive that a guy who drives a Rolls Royce and goes on two safaris can spend $85 on offsets and get away with it. Inhofe calls carbon offsets a scam, an environmental Enron. The video quality is poor, but inconsequential for talking heads.

    Link

The Truth Behind The Tear Jerker Polar Bear Picture (3:43)

It was taken in August when it’s natural for ice to melt. It was not far from the coast (well within swimming distance), and released over 2 years after it was taken on the day a UN report was released to promote global warming. Gore used the picture in his slide show, stating, “Their habitat is melting. Beautiful animals literally being forced off the planet. They’re in trouble, got nowhere else to go.” Gore wouldn’t lie to the American people, would he? He wouldn’t lie to the entire world, would he? He wouldn’t engage in cheap, emotional sensationalism, would he? Say it ain’t so, Al.

Michael Crichton on Environmentalism As Religion (4:21)

There was an Eden, ruined by people, who are original sinners destroying the planet, but capable of seeking salvation through sustainability.
    Link

    Every Breath You Take (4:14)

This thoroughly depressing video looks at the recent declaration by the Supremes that CO2 is a pollutant and what the likely consequences will be. Can you say tort? When are we going to stop committing war on American corporations?

    Link

    The Stork (2:58)

These nutjobs really do think people are the problem. But wait, they’re elitists. They aren’t the problem. You are. Otherwise they would “act locally” and we wouldn’t have to put up with their nonsense any longer. Of course, the guy way out in front of the other nutjobs on this is who else, but Al Gore. This does sound a lot like eugenics. At one time, the scientific consensus supported eugenics too.

    Link

    Global Warming Lawsuits (3:08)

It stands to reason that the trial lawyers will swoop in, corrupt the already corrupt science, and hold business hostage while cutting deals with opportunistic state attorneys general. It’s just a matter of time.

Near the end, note how Beejal Patel, the anchor, says, “In the wake of the recent Supreme Court decision, the focus will certainly be on U.S. automakers. They currently have a lawsuit pending in California opposing that state’s efforts to regulate carbon dioxide emissions. Basically California is saying they want cars to produce less pollution, but the U.S. automakers are challenging that. But Tom, you know consumers have made it clear they want more energy efficient vehicles.”

Uh, sorry but consumers make it clear by the vehicles they purchase. If consumers didn’t want SUVs, Detroit wouldn’t make them. We don’t need the courts to force businesses to deliver what consumers want when the profit motive suffices. Courts force businesses to deliver what people like Patel think consumers should want but are too stupid or self-centered to purchase.

CNN Meteorologist Applauds Brit Judge (0:46)

When a CNN anchor reported that Gore’s movie was ruled unfit to show children due to bias and propaganda, the meteorologist starts clapping. I wonder where he works today.

    Link

Global Warming: The Debate Continues (7:18)

This is the first segment of a Fox News special. It leads with Senator Inhofe declaring global warming to be a hoax and gets better from there.

    Link

If Gore Is Serious, He Should Be a Vegan (8:18)

According to PETA, livestock produce 130 times as much waste as humans. The UN says, “raising animals for food generates more greenhouse gases than all of the cars and trucks in the world combined.”

PETA spokesperson, Matt Prescott says Gore should tell people, “’Simply just cutting the meat out of your diet is the best way to help the environment, which scientists now know is true.’ Then, he could really have a major influence. And, the fact that he doesn’t suggest that, is a pretty big problem.”

    Link

Glenn Beck Interviews James Spann (5:39)

Meteorologist James Spann discusses Heidi Cullen from the Weather Channel, who demands that anyone who doesn’t agree with her on global warming should be stripped of all metrological credentials.

    Link

Don Young on Global Warming (6:19)

This is not a great video, but is included because it points out the blindingly obvious that’s missed everywhere else. In response to a question at meeting, Alaskan Congressman Don Young points out that the climate must have been warmer in the past or oil would not have be located at Prudhoe Bay.

    Link

    A Snowman’s Biggest Question (1:35)

Does Dennis Kucinich really think we can drop oil and rely on wind and solar? I guess so. This is what we're up against. And yet, people from Ohio vote for this guy.

    Link

    Glenn Beck’s Inconvenient Segment (5:18)

John Coleman, founder of the Weather Channel, calls global warming “the greatest scam in history.” Beck interviews him.

    Global Warming is History.
based on data from the National Climatic Data Center ^ | 2-13-08 | dangus

    http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1969627/posts
    http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/...anomalies.html

Over the past year, a remarkable cooling trend has brought ocean surface temperatures down to temperatures reached in the 1940s. Now, land temperatures have followed. Planet-wide land temperatures were actually significantly *below* the 20th-century average. This is not a refutation of global warming by an attempt to debate how sound the alarmists' dataset is. This is based on the same data sets used by Al Gore, Dr. Hansen, and the IPCC: Global Warming is, for now, history.

Global temperatures are about the coolest measured since 1994, about the same as the phenomenally large "La Nina" of 2000. By 1994, climatologists were warning of global warming, but there was a frank rebuttal: the earth was no warmer, yet, than it had been in the 1940s. There had been warming from about 1900 to 1944, but this was before significant amounts of green house gases were released. From the 1940s through the 1970s, the globe actually cooled slightly. And from around 1980 to the early 1990s, there had been some slight warming, according to problematic earth-bound sensors anyway, back to the peaks reached in 1944.

Then it happened: The mid 90s were progressively warmer (we're talking hundredths of degrees, mind you.) But 1998 saw a massive warming event called "El Nino." The following year, "La Nina" brought temperatures back to where they had been a few years earlier, but at the start of the new millennium, temperatures rose to near the heights of El Nino... and stayed there.

Finally, the predictions of global warming seemed to be coming true. Plus, even though the warming had been only a quarter of a degree since 1944, they had statistical grounds for asserting the warming was accelerating, and were soon predicting that the next century could see temperatures soar as much as ten degrees.

When the United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Changed issued their report in early 2007, they had noted that 2006 was the second warmest year in history. The hockey stick presentation the IPCC had used to assert that the current temperatures were warmer than the Medieval Warm period of a millennium ago was quickly shown to be completely fraudulent; A statistical model had been conconcted which made it impossible to demonstrate historic warm periods, no matter what the data entered was.

But even before that, I had said to myself, "But still... there's an El Nino again now, and the Earth is still no warmer than it was a decade ago. How is that consistent with an accelerating warm trend?"

The statistics available were ambiguous. On the one hand, the Earth was no warmer than it had been a decade earlier. On the other hand, what had been a phenomenal aberration in 1998 had become commonplace in the new millennium. So I started to watch the new data emerge, using ocean surface temperatures because these generated less statistical noise and showed clearer trends.

A La Nina event (which causes cool temperatures in the Pacific) developed, as was no surprise. (I'd almost say these could be thought of as rebounding events after a La Nina, except earth scientists of all stripes would clobber me with ways in which this analogy was misleading... it's not actually known why La Nina events follow El Nino events.)

The La Nina event of 2007 brought statistical balance to the El Nino event of 2006. Although I may have grabbed some attention with vanity headlines declaring the oceans were cooling, my reports to Free Republic presented this data as merely demonstrating that there had been no accelerating of global warming.

This was certainly big news: If no acceleration takes place, global warming is harmless. And additional degree Celsius over the next century would probably be a good thing, and the increased carbon dioxide which caused it would have beneficial effects to agriculture which would far exceed what few negative effects might occur.

But now something far more startling has happened: The El Nino has dissipated, but global ocean waters have still continued to cool. By this, I mean that the sea surface temperatures, globally averaged and adjusted for seasonal variations, have declined. What's more, land temperatures, which had shown a greater warming trend over the past few decades, plummeted, from a near-record high last February (according to some data sets, it was a record high), to temperatures considerably below the 20th century average this past January.

I will publish another report when the February data is complete. So far, it appears that most of the Indian ocean, the second largest ocean in the world, has suddenly cooled. And the rest of the world's oceans don't seem to rebounding in temperature any. So I'm expecting I'll have still further cooling to report. ----------------- Note: Free Republic requires sources to have URLs starting with "Http://" so the source link is merely the page which links to the data. The actual data are from these pages:

Global land temperatures (land station monitoring): ftp://ftp.ncdc.noaa.gov/pub/data/ano...1-2000mean.dat Global ocean temperatures (sea surface): ftp://ftp.ncdc.noaa.gov/pub/data/ano...1-2000mean.dat Total Global temperatures (weighted average of the above tables): ftp://ftp.ncdc.noaa.gov/pub/data/ano...1-2000mean.dat

Global Warming Will Force Us All To Eat Bugs
    Newsbusters ^

Global Warming Will Force Us All To Eat Bugs Photo of Noel Sheppard. By Noel Sheppard | February 14, 2008 - 10:14 ET

Shortly after New Years, NewsBusters informed readers about a new horror movie wherein nature attacks oil workers in Alaska to prevent global warming.

To further scare people into sacrificing their financial well-being in order to stave off the liberal bogeyman, HuffPoster Kerry Trueman on Tuesday suggested that food shortages will be so rampant if we don't stop climate change that we'll all end up eating bugs.

    I kid you not.

For those looking for a cut to the chase, this was the money shot (emphasis added throughout, h/t NBer lunaticcringeradio):

If the thought of eating bugs and roadkill freaks you out, consider this: competition for the world's dwindling resources is heating up right along with the planet, and global warming is worsening food shortages all over the world. In this land o' plenty o' processed foods, most Americans can't imagine an era when we'd be forced to subsist on weeds, bugs, and -- till we run out of gas -- roadkill.

And you thought I was pulling your leg, didn't you? Fortunately, Kerry had some great culinary ideas for us:

Is it time to start chowing down on some of those crawly critters we instinctively prefer to stomp on? The Feral Forager, a self-published 'zine excerpted in Sandor Katz's The Revolution Will Not Be Microwaved, rebrands pill bugs as "land shrimp"; grasshoppers are "surprisingly tasty and filling" and taste "something like popcorn"; crickets, "incredibly high in calcium and potassium." Roasted grubs make a fat-filled protein snack that, again, tastes "a lot like popcorn."

Earthworms make "a very nutritious flour," and ant eggs are edible, too; raw ant eggs reportedly taste "like couscous", but the author of the article confesses that "the only time I tried this it tasted like a hundred ants biting my tongue..."

Honestly, if this won't scare you into turning off your lights and selling your SUV, nothing will!

Global warming, I like to call it the Great Global Power Grab. Ever notice that when scientists speak out against global warming they are accused of being on big oils payroll? Well Ive noticed that a lot of people speaking for global warming have their own agenda such as making money and getting themselves into positions of power.

AlGore is a perfect example, not only is he part owner of a company selling carbon offsets, this freak, this lying sack of shit, makes millions on the speaking circuit. This guy is this biggest fucking hypocrit there is. His monthly residential electric bill is more than the average household's yearly bill! His comeback: I buy carbon offsets.

How can people not see through the bullshit?

Global Warming: A lawmaker from the Silicon Valley wants to require "climate change" to be taught as "science" in all California public schools. Warmers can't convince the adults, but they can brainwash the children.
"You can't have a science curriculum that is relevant and current if it doesn't deal with the science behind climate change," says the bill's sponsor, California state Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto. "This is a phenomenon of global importance, and our kids ought to understand the science behind that phenomenon."

So should adults such as Al Gore, who declares the debate over even as evidence debunking the junk science behind Simitian's proposal surfaces daily.

We don't know who'll write the climate change curriculum, but we'd guess it wouldn't be Dr. William Gray, professor emeritus of the atmospheric department at Colorado State University, who has become known as America's most reliable hurricane forecaster.

"We're brainwashing our children," Gray told 300 meteorology students at the University of North Carolina last year. "They're going to the Gore movie and being fed all this. It's ridiculous."

This scientist and student of global warming said, "The human impact on the atmosphere is simply too small to have a major impact on global temperatures."

Climatology pioneer Reid Bryson, founding chairman of the department of meteorology at the University of Wisconsin, says, "You can go outside and spit and have the same effect as doubling carbon dioxide."

Global Warming? New Data Shows Ice Is Back
    Newsmax ^ | 2008-02-19 | Phil Brennan

Are the world's ice caps melting because of climate change, or are the reports just a lot of scare mongering by the advocates of the global warming theory?

Scare mongering appears to be the case, according to reports from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that reveal that almost all the allegedly “lost” ice has come back. A NOAA report shows that ice levels which had shrunk from 5 million square miles in January 2007 to just 1.5 million square miles in October, are almost back to their original levels.

Moreover, a Feb. 18 report in the London Daily Express showed that there is nearly a third more ice in Antarctica than usual, challenging the global warming crusaders and buttressing arguments of skeptics who deny that the world is undergoing global warming.

The Daily express recalls the photograph of polar bears clinging on to a melting iceberg which has been widely hailed as proof of the need to fight climate change and has been used by former Vice President Al Gore during his "Inconvenient Truth" lectures about mankind’s alleged impact on the global climate.

Gore fails to mention that the photograph was taken in the month of August when melting is normal. Or that the polar bear population has soared in recent years.

As winter roars in across the Northern Hemisphere, Mother Nature seems to have joined the ranks of the skeptics.

As the Express notes, scientists are saying the northern Hemisphere has endured its coldest winter in decades, adding that snow cover across the area is at its greatest since 1966. The newspaper cites the one exception — Western Europe, which had, until the weekend when temperatures plunged to as low as -10 C in some places, been basking in unseasonably warm weather.

Around the world, vast areas have been buried under some of the heaviest snowfalls in decades. Central and southern China, the United States, and Canada were hit hard by snowstorms. In China, snowfall was so heavy that over 100,000 houses collapsed under the weight of snow.

Jerusalem, Damascus, Amman, and northern Saudi Arabia report the heaviest falls in years and below-zero temperatures. In Afghanistan, snow and freezing weather killed 120 people. Even Baghdad had a snowstorm, the first in the memory of most residents.

AFP news reports icy temperatures have just swept through south China, stranding 180,000 people and leading to widespread power cuts just as the area was recovering from the worst weather in 50 years, the government said Monday. The latest cold snap has taken a severe toll in usually temperate Yunnan province, which has been struck by heavy snowfalls since Thursday, a government official from the provincial disaster relief office told AFP.

Twelve people have died there, state Xinhua news agency reported, and four remained missing as of Saturday.

An ongoing record-long spell of cold weather in Vietnam's northern region, which started on Jan. 14, has killed nearly 60,000 cattle, mainly bull and buffalo calves, local press reported Monday. By Feb. 17, the spell had killed a total of 59,962 cattle in the region, including 7,349 in the Ha Giang province, 6,400 in Lao Cai, and 5,571 in Bac Can province, said Hoang Kim Giao, director of the Animal Husbandry Department under the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, according to the Pioneer newspaper.

In Britain the temperatures plunged to -10 C in central England, according to the Express, which reports that experts say that February could end up as one of the coldest in Britain in the past 10 years with the freezing night-time conditions expected to stay around a frigid -8 C until at least the middle of the week. And the BBC reports that a bus company's efforts to cut global warming emissions have led to services being disrupted by cold weather.

Meanwhile Athens News reports that a raging snow storm that blanketed most of Greece over the weekend and continued into the early morning hours on Monday, plunging the country into sub-zero temperatures. The agency reported that public transport buses were at a standstill on Monday in the wider Athens area, while ships remained in ports, public services remained closed, and schools and courthouses in the more severely-stricken prefectures were also closed.

Scores of villages, mainly on the island of Crete, and in the prefectures of Evia, Argolida, Arcadia, Lakonia, Viotia, and the Cyclades islands were snowed in.

More than 100 villages were snowed-in on the island of Crete and temperatures in Athens dropped to -6 C before dawn, while the coldest temperatures were recorded in Kozani, Grevena, Kastoria and Florina, where they plunged to -12 C.

If global warming gets any worse we'll all freeze to death.

Default Re: The Global Warming Hoax - World's Greatest Scam

GM exec stands by calling global warming a "crock"

DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Corp Vice Chairman Bob Lutz has defended remarks he made dismissing global warming as a "total crock of s---," saying his views had no bearing on GM's commitment to build environmentally friendly vehicles.

Lutz, GM's outspoken product development chief, has been under fire from Internet bloggers since last month when he was quoted as making the remark to reporters in Texas.

In a posting on his GM blog on Thursday, Lutz said those "spewing virtual vitriol" at him for minimizing the threat of climate change were "missing the big picture."

"What they should be doing in earnest is forming opinions, not about me but about GM and what this company is doing that is ... hugely beneficial to the causes they so enthusiastically claim to support," he said in a posting titled, "Talk About a Crock."

GM, the largest U.S. automaker by sales and market share, has been trying to change its image after taking years of heat for relying too much on sales of large sport-utility vehicles like the Hummer and not moving faster on fuel-saving hybrid technology.

"My thoughts on what has or hasn't been the cause of climate change have nothing to do with the decisions I make to advance the cause of General Motors," he wrote.

Lutz said GM was continuing development of the battery-powered, plug-in Chevy Volt and other alternatives to traditional internal combustion engines.

GM is racing against Toyota Motor Corp to be first to market a plug-in hybrid car that can be recharged at a standard electric outlet.

Lutz has previously said GM made a mistake by allowing Toyota to seize "the mantle of green respectability and technology leadership" with its market-leading Prius hybrid.

A 40-year auto industry veteran who joined GM earlier in the decade with a mandate to shake up its vehicle line-up, Lutz is no stranger to controversy.

As part of a campaign against higher fuel economy standards, Lutz wrote in a 2006 blog posting that forcing automakers to sell smaller cars would be "like trying to address the obesity problem in this country by forcing clothing manufacturers to sell smaller, tighter sizes."

Automakers ended their opposition to higher fuel standards in 2007 when it became clear that proposed changes would become law with or without their support.

In December, President George W. Bush signed a law mandating a 40 percent increase in fleetwide fuel economy by 2020, the first substantial change in three decades.
