I lived half my life in Central NY, in the Finger Lakes region. It's a beautiful place, from Westchester to the Adirondacks, Albany to Buffalo. There are many conservative communities, as well. It's truly a shame that the state's been overrun with lefties.

MMCO, then you also know it is mostly NYC that sucks the upstate dry.

They may lower some taxes there, but local taxes are based on the schools and in some counties that is way way way up there. I know of an exception on the east side of Seneca lake, for example in Shuyler county. Still, with all the oppressive laws, forget about going there, is my thought.

It's sad, Phil, but I agree. I had hoped to one day retire somewhere near Skaneateles Lake. Taxes are just incredibly high. My brother has a 3,400 square foot house in Manlius, NY. He pays about $14,000 a year in property taxes. I pay about $1,600 in Colorado. As another variable, constitutional rights abuses, as you say, are oppressive. I'm not likely to return.

    Holy SHIT, 14k a YEAR????????????????????

My God, what kind of stupid fuckers run that place? Oh, Demonrats... same as Detroit.

    /sigh

And Colorado now. Wait for the taxes to start going up.

Ive decided that Florida is going to be our "domicile" but we're not registering to vote now, and FL has no income or property taxes like that.

MMCO, that is a fine example of how bad taxes are there. With my home its 5k sq feet and 6 acres for almost 10k a year so while its high it is a lot of house and land.

Phil, I can't imagine what your house would be asessed at in NY. Scary to think. Th eone thing I will say about NY, at least when I grew up there, is that the public schools were pretty darn good. We didn't have to pay a thing for sports or art or music programs, etc. With all that tax money, apparently they can cover the expenses. However, that was over thirty years ago.

Rick, as you say, taxes will probably start going up here too. I guess they already have if you look at vehicle registration fees and the like. I've got to actively begin thinking about a move and develop a plan.

Our Gov here in VA turned our state around to a small surplus. I applaud that, but a few weeks ago he went for a lowering of the gas tax the state charges and offset that with a modest rise in house tax. I called foul there as most everyone drives but not everyone owns a house and owners like us would be paying more for others than we do already. Thankfully our reps have been fighting this with success.
