    Big Brother Is Watching WHO??
TSA "Terrorist" Turns Out To Be A Homeward-Bound Marine

by ANN Senior Correspondent Kevin R.C. "Hognose" O'Brien

The Transportation Security Administration bagged a terrorist in Los Angeles International Airport Tuesday, or so they thought. Daniel Brown's name came up on their no-fly watchlist, so they dragged him into interrogation and grilled him, despite the protestations of Brown and his fellow travelers, who swore they could vouch for him.

The others in Brown's party went on their Northwest Airlines flight to Minneapolis-St. Paul, where they waited on a bus at the airport. You see, the detained man was Staff Sergeant Daniel Brown, USMC Reserve, and he was traveling with the other members of his Marine Reserve Military Police unit, which was heading home to Minnesota from eight months of combat in Iraq. The Marines were in full uniform and all, including Brown, had travel orders and military identification cards.

After attempts to stonewall under claims of "security," TSA spokesmen finally admitted that Staff Sergeant Daniel Brown was placed on the no-fly list, and ultimately detained, because they had detected gunpowder on his footgear -- not on this flight, but on a prior flight, which earned Brown a permanent place on the TSA's mysterious terrorist lists.

The footgear that had been exposed to gunpowder? Brown's combat boots, and the occasion of that flight was after his return from his first combat tour in Iraq. Gee... a combat Marine in Al-Anbar Province being exposed to gunpowder.

Exposure to gunpowder isn't something the TSA knows a lot about. Hey, who are you gonna believe, this here watchlist or your lyin' eyes?

Ultimately, the TSA screeners figured out that Brown really was a Marine, and no threat to his fellow passengers, and let him board a later flight. When he deplaned at MSP, his unit's bus was waiting -- his fellow Marines in it.

Marine 1st Sgt. Drew Benson explained why. "We don't leave anybody behind. We start together, and we finish together." All 26 Marines waited for Brown -- even though their families were waiting for them at a scheduled welcome-home bash at Fort Snelling.

Brown's mother Terry was glad they did. "They all come back together... no matter what it takes and I think that's very important," she told WCCO-TV.

Frequent TSA critic Richard A. Altomare, Founder and Chairman of the Coalition for Luggage Security -- and a former marine -- said, "I'm proud that Sergeant Dan Brown's Marine unit refused to report to their post until the 'man left behind' was permitted to get on a passenger plane. This TSA's bloated bureaucracy with documented insensitive treatment of countless Americans really rings home a need to dismantle their growing airport agency before all American freedoms are lost -- since now even the United States Marines can't help us."

The TSA watch lists are shrouded in such secrecy that it's impossible to tell if they have done any good. The TSA refuses to say how people get on the list or even how many are on. On the other hand, the absurdities of the list have been well publicized.

Senator Ted Kennedy (Okay, I can understand this one. After all, no one wants a known, combatative drunk flying! ), former child actor David Nelson, and other celebrities have turned up on the list. (TSA explained to Sen. Kennedy that there was a terrorist who once used "T. Kennedy" as an alias. "T" is not one of the Senator's initials; his full name is Edward Moore Kennedy).

Some of our own writers were placed on the list after we ran several Aero-Views critical of TSA management.

In the last few weeks, a DHS official originally recruited by TSA was in the news after being caught in a child sex sting; as Aero-News reported, before joining TSA he took early retirement from Time magazine after a porn scandal there.

Last month, a classified Government Accountability Office report leaked to NBC News reportedly revealed that security testers were able to bring bomb-making materials through TSA security at 21 of 21 airports tested.

But the TSA will not strike its colors; it has not yet begun to fight. Boston TSA head George Naccara told CSO Online, a magazine for security executives, last month that the TSA needed to extend its unique approach to security to other modes of transport: "subway stations, rail terminals, cruise ship and ferry docks, even special events like conventions."

"TSA was never clearly given a mandate to focus only on aviation," Naccara said. "I want to bring a sense of urgency to other modes and explain to them what we do and how it can be adapted to work in their environments."

Meanwhile, does the Marine of the hour have any words? Turns out he does. "As somebody who has served 16 months over in Iraq for the U.S. Marine Corps and come home and get hassled by TSA, it's kind of a major disappointment," Daniel Brown told TV station WCCO. "I've been fighting terrorism for the last 16 months in Iraq. I don't think I should have to come home and deal with this."

Brown's father Carey echoed his son's sentiments. "For an individual who spent two tours over in Iraq fighting for his country, I think it's one of the biggest bogus things they could ever come up with."

With luck, no one at TSA will take that as a challenge.

What would have been more fun. His unit "makes a bit of a stink", there, in the Airport. Nothing threatening, simply refuse to leave. FORCE the thousands standing around to get REAL brass involved, there, on the spot. -Mal

What happened to SSG Daniel Brown is a disgrace. But that is merely the tip of the ice berg of real problems with the TSA and the whole of airline/airport security in this country. We are a joke, and I say that as one who has travelled extensively in and out of CONUS.

This next one should make your blood boil and also make you think twice before you ever book another flight to anywhere.

What Happened to the Syrian “Musicians” from Northwest Flight 327? Sorry Folks,

You can’t read the government’s version of what happened on Flight 327 because it has been CLASSIFIED. Why? And whatever happened to “nothing happened?”

    By Annie Jacobsen

25 April 2006: On June 29, 2004 -- nearly three years after 9/11 -- I was on a flight that many undercover federal agents believe was a dry run for a future terrorist attack involving a hijacked commercial airplane. One federal agent went so far as to tell me that, based upon the intel he had, “it was the real deal called off.” Now, 22-months later, the government has completed its investigation into Northwest flight 327. Here’s what they say. Oh wait, a few more facts first…

Back in 2004, the flight became headline news after I wrote a 3,000 word, first-hand account of the terrifying events involving a 757 jet, 14 Syrian men, several flight attendants, two federal air marshals and 187 passengers. The article, called “Terror in The Skies, Again?” was published at WomensWallStreet.com and within a week, according to CNN, fifteen million people read it.

Great article Sean. A bit frightening to think about though.

    Guys,

I get Air Marshal Alerts all the time... FAM's are ticked off deluxe because their supposed undercover flying marshalls are routinely compromised by airline boarding rules and other so-called airport/airline security activities. It's gotten so bad that law suits are now in progress.

A War on "Terrorism" will never, ever, be won in the US court system - but valuable monetary resources will be consumed in what is probably a vain effort to allow the FAM's to do their jobs as they've been trained to do them and with the absolutely necessary covert nature of their activity onboard US aircraft.

A couple of years ago I flew for the first time since 9-11, to the Dominican Republic for a week. I recently had ACL replacement surgery on my left knew so I was wearing a carbon fiber knee brace. I was totally up front at security and told them about it. I was taken out of line to a private booth where I had to drop my pants in front of two guys so they could see it. Then another guy came in and wiped cotton pads all over it. Then I had to wait about 10 to 15 minutes with the two guys until the other came back and said I was ok to fly.

On my return trip I stuffed the brace in a carry on and walked right through security. It clearly showed up on x-ray but no one said a thing or asked me what is was.

    Catfish,

I've found that it's better to never tell them about anything because you then become an example. Since I don't carry weapons but I do carry tools and other "dual use" (for a terrorist) items, I pack 'em and have yet to hear boo about it. The one time I did even speak to the TSA guy, I got the full treatment. Eff 'em.

I suspect they are trained to pull anyone who speaks to them aside(more than just the, "do I go now? Take my shoes off? kinda stuff). I guess the reasoning is that Terrorists might either have a guilty conscience or they are trying to bamboozle or distract.

The airline "security" provisions are the stupidest, most wasteful, economically hurtful, "feeling good because we are doing something" laws in the country.

Any even halfway intelligent terrorist willing to give his life to hijack a plane can do so. My friends and I have thought of dozens of ways that tickets can be purchased and not match ID, weapons created and easily sneaked on board, etc.

Show ID? It's fake. No way can TSA screeners catch fake IDs from every state in the union. Scan my shoes? Who can't think of a way to sneak a custom shaped 10" knife on board? Or just train your men in unarmed killing techniques! Bah. Giant waste of time for all concerned. The only thing that will stop another hijacking has already been demonstrated on Flight 93.

And don't get me started on no-fly lists. Sheesh. If you have enough info that you don't want them to fly, then freaking arrest them! This is America for God's sake. I don't take kindly to secret lists.

I have to agree about those no-fly lists. They just exemplify the non-sense we see day to day in our supposed "national security". Like FH says above. If you have enough info on them then arrest them. It's not like terrorists can't quickly figure out not to send wanted men. Most bombers are young brainwashed recruits. They can be used to that end also. It just makes no sense.

But as for "secret" lists... When has the U.S. been without them?

Quite frankly the no-fly lists are a joke. The pat down I get at check-in is half hearted at best, and on my last flight in January they confiscated my wife's 6" nail file, but the 2" pocket knife I forgot to take off my keychain in my carry on went through and it was only pointed out to me upon my return flight. The 85 year old hunchbacked Granny gets pulled aside for a full random screening, but the 6' 4" 220 lbs guy in heavy clothing gets the walk through metal scan only.

What a waste of time, money, and energy. Yes we do need to take smart precautions, but what's currently in place just seems like a knee-jerk reaction.

I'm actually very very surprised something hasn't happened yet in any one of our major sea shipping ports. That's where I see the real security risk at. It wouldn't take much money for a terrorist group to set up a small business import/export front to learn the ins and outs of container shipping, then exploit the holy be-jeeses out of the security loopholes there.

How do we know this has not been done? Probably has, but not by terrorists. I'm sure drug lords have a well travelled shipping container path.
