In A Swing Across Iowa, Ted Cruz Packs In The Crowds With A Conservative Call

    April 3, 2015

Sen. Ted Cruz, pacing as he always does when making a stump speech, looked out on a room packed with people and made note of the furniture.

“The reason I’m optimistic is because we ran out of chairs,” Cruz (R-Tex.) said to the crowd at the Longbranch Hotel, some in straight-backed chairs, others massed in the back.

It’s a line Cruz would use more than once on his first trip to Iowa as a declared presidential candidate, underscoring his status as an emerging top-tier contender in the crowded 2016 race.

On a two-day, five-stop swing that took him from Sioux City to Dubuque County, Cruz was greeted by enthusiastic crowds packed into stuffy auditoriums and large ballrooms. Sporting a wireless microphone, he has honed his primary pitch to voters — it involves a lot of gesticulating — and looks more comfortable on the trail than before. He chuckles after his own jokes and a self-satisfied smile came each time the crowd applauded or shouted “Amen” after he called for the repeal of Obamacare or the Common Core education standards.

Cruz is the first major presidential contender to announce his candidacy, and he is having a moment. He has broken into the top tier of candidates, according to recent polls — including a Washington Post-ABC News survey this week showing him trailing only Jeb Bush among Republicans and GOP-leaning independents.

Cruz is also surprising many with his ability to raise money, pulling in $4 million during the first eight days of his campaign. The majority of the contributions came from small-dollar donations, while 300 donors maxed out on their contributions.

This weekend, the campaign purchased television advertising time nationally on Fox News during “Killing Jesus,” a *documentary-style adaptation of Bill O’Reilly’s book, and statewide in Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire and South Carolina during NBC’s “A.D.: The Bible Continues” on Easter Sunday.

“We’re trying to lock in those gains now and communicate about the message,” a Cruz adviser said.

Cruz’s ad, which speaks of the “transformative love of Jesus Christ,” illustrates his campaign’s focus on courting voters who are motivated by faith, including evangelicals here in Iowa, Catholics in New Hampshire and Southern Baptists in South Carolina. He calls for a “grass-roots army” of conservatives to support him and talks about broadening his appeal to libertarians and so-called “Reagan Democrats.”

Cruz spent a good deal of time on the trail talking about religious freedom, praising a law passed in Indiana aimed at shielding businesses from having to participate in same-sex weddings.

“I’m sorry to say it has not been a profile in courage seeing some of the leaders running and scurrying” to change the legislation, he said. “Defending religious liberty is not a fringe view, it is a basic American value.”

Cruz is making defending things, from the Constitution to values, a centerpiece of his campaign, casting himself as a solitary figure who relishes fighting and leading in a way other likely challengers do not.

“How many of those issues have those individuals stood up and led?” Cruz said in Sioux City when asked how he will show he has enough executive experience to be president. “For most of them you can find one issue, maybe two.”

At the same time, Cruz has been loath to hit at other prospective candidates by name, calling them friends or people he respects. He did poke Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) for voting not to overhaul a surveillance program that collects bulk records of phone calls.

He has also emphasized his hawkish views on foreign policy, castigating the framework for an Iranian nuclear deal reached this week and vowing to root out Islamic extremism.

Cruz’s appearances often have the feel of a revival meeting, and they seemed even more upbeat than usual this week, with crowds yelling “yes,” “that’s right” and “Amen” after he made a point. In Des Moines, a man in a shirt with American flags printed on it loudly praised Cruz after he said he bucked George W. Bush on an issue, and others guffawed when he talked about his precocious daughter or took a dig at Vice President Biden.

Cruz’s wife, Heidi, was just as popular as her husband. Throngs of voters lined up to meet her after Cruz’s speeches, asking her to pose for photos or sign books.

Many in the crowds said they were coming to check out Cruz because they like him and are intrigued by his staunch conservatism. Others said they have already made up their minds to support him.

Many also asked pointed questions, including two people at different locations who asked Cruz how he would handle undocumented immigrants who remain in the country. Cruz, who decries President Obama’s executive action on immigration reform as “illegal amnesty,” said the answer is to first secure the border then “have a discussion” about what to do with people who remain.

Bob Eft of Waterloo said he likes what Cruz had to say, but is concerned that he’s not going to raise enough money to stay in the race. A man standing next to him chimed in.

“I think he’s real. I really do,” said Danny Michael, also of Waterloo. “You know why? Because the other guys hate him.”

Adam Vandall, 34, said he is fully behind Cruz’s campaign and has never supported a candidate this early in the process.

Motioning to a packed ballroom at a Holiday Inn next to the Des Moines airport, Vandall asked, “How many presidential candidates 10, 11 months out from the caucus have this big of a crowd?”

New Ted Cruz Super-PACs Take in Record Haul

The Texas senator's supporters throw down a marker in the fundraising sweepstakes—$31 million raised in less than a week.

    April 8, 2015

Ted Cruz’s presidential effort is getting into the shock-and-awe fundraising business.

An associate of the Texas senator, a recently announced presidential candidate, tells Bloomberg that a cluster of affiliated super-political action committees was formed only this week, and among them they are expected to have $31 million in the bank by Friday.

Even in the context of a presidential campaign cycle in which the major party nominees are expected to raise more than $1.5 billion, Cruz’s haul is eye-popping, one that instantly raises the stakes in the Republican fundraising contest.

Although super-PACs have radically changed the pace at which committees backing presidential candidates can raise money, the Cruz haul is remarkable. There are no known cases in which an operation backing a White House hopeful has collected this much money in less than a week.

Those involved in the Cruz super-PACS say many of his biggest financial backers haven’t yet made contributions to the new organizations and are expected to do so in the coming months. By law, super-PACS can accept unlimited contributions from individuals.

From his time as a Senate candidate in 2012, Cruz has been one of the country’s most aggressive and successful super-PAC fundraisers. His political team has calculated from the start of their planning for a presidential campaign that his overall operation would be able to keep pace with rivals in part because of a robust super-PAC operation. They have talked among themselves about the names of numerous wealthy Cruz backers who they fully expect will contribute several million dollars each.

Still, even some Cruz supporters, and many others who have been skeptical that his candidacy could draw significant financial support, are certain to be stunned by this initial round of contributions.

While former Florida Governor Jeb Bush is universally expected to easily lead all other Republican presidential candidates in financial backing, a hotly debated topic in political circles has been who would finish second to Bush in money raised by the end of 2015. This week’s apparent lightning strike could help Cruz claim that spot, possibly besting other leading prospects such as Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, former Texas Governor Rick Perry, and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker.

Cruz’s campaign is also expected to raise money competitively at the grassroots level through the Internet and small-dollar contributions, as well as through traditional bundling of so-called hard-dollar checks, which are subject to limits of $2,700 per election per individual. Either of those methods, of course, would require significantly more than a week to generate $31 million.

According to documents filed with the Federal Election Commission, the treasurer for the three of the new super-PACS is Dathan Voelter, an Austin, Texas, attorney who is a longtime friend and financial backer of Cruz. A fourth lists as its treasurer Jacquelyn James of Port Jefferson Station, N.Y. All four PACS have a variant of the name “Keep the Promise.”

A document prepared by the super-PAC organizers says they “are committed to raising the resources necessary to promote Senator Cruz in his efforts to win the 2016 Republican presidential nomination.” The document quotes Voelter as saying, “We’re just getting started … Our goal is to guarantee Senator Cruz can compete against any candidate. Supporters of the Senator now have a powerful vehicle with the resources necessary to aid in his effort to secure the Republican nomination and win back the White House.” The document describes those “leading the financial charge” as “a group of close, personal friends of Senator Cruz, who share his conservative vision for America.”

According to the source close to Cruz, more than $20 million of the $31 million is expected by Wednesday, with the rest due in by the end of the week. Those cash figures could not be independently confirmed by Bloomberg, and sources declined to provide financial documents to support the claim.

The group does not plan to reveal the names or number of donors until they are legally required to do so, at the end of the FEC reporting period on July 15.

According to a person familiar with the workings and financing of the new super-PACs, many of the donors are former backers of George W. Bush and Perry. Bush’s brother, of course, and Perry himself, are seeking the White House now, which makes Cruz’s coup that much more impressive. A Houston-area associate of Cruz’s has led the effort to pull together the donors, many of whom are Texans and New Yorkers.

The PAC names are “Keep the Promise,” "Keep the Promise I," “Keep the Promise II,” and “Keep the Promise III.” An internal document describing the groups’ intentions says, “Every PAC in the Keep the Promise network will fully comply with all disclosure and recordkeeping obligations set forth in federal law. The use of multiple PACS, however, will allow Keep the Promise to uniquely and flexibly tailor its activities in support of Senator Cruz and afford donors greater control over PAC operations.”

In a cover letter dated April 6, sent to the FEC along with the formal filings for three of the super-PAC entities, Voelter says that the trio “are affiliated with one another for legal and regulatory purposes.” It lists an Austin post office box as their shared address, and the Fifth Third Bank in Atlanta as the place where funds are being deposited.

    Voelter declined to comment.

The document from the group says that “Keep the Promise can provide the ‘appropriate air cover’ in the battle against Senator Cruz’s opponents in the Washington establishment and on the political left. We plan to support the effort of millions of courageous conservatives who believe 2016 is our last opportunity to ‘keep the promise’ of America for future generations.”

I had previously told myself I wouldn't be donating to any future Presidential candidates after the last election but with Ted Cruz being in the race and him being the powerhouse he is, I've reversed that position. I've decided to send Cruz $25 every paycheck until he either wins the Presidency or is defeated in the primary. Gave my first donation to him right after he officially announced and will be again in 2 days. Looking forward to it!

All you'll need to know about Jeb Bush.

Michael Bloomberg Declares His Friend Jeb Bush the Best GOP Candidate

    April 12, 2015

On April 9, Michael Bloomberg delcared his friend Jeb Bush the best GOP candidate for president.

To be precise, Bloomberg cited Bush and Hillary Clinton as the only truly “worthy” candidates, in his view.

According to The New York Times, Bloomberg was attending a party in his honor after receiving an honorary knighthood from from Queen Elizabeth II. During the party, at which Bloomberg said he had “always admired the sophistication and fortitude of the British people,” the former mayor also singled out Bush and Clinton as the only two candidates for him.

“Hillary and Jeb are the only two who know how to make the trains run,” said Bloomberg.

Bloomberg’s first-name-basis relationship with Bush is outgrowth of their work together on education projects in 2006, reported by the The New York Sun, immigration reform in 2013, reported by Partnership for an American Economy, and even a dinner together in 2014, reported by the Tampa Bay Times.

The immigration reform was done under the auspices of Obama’s Organizing For Action.

By 2010, the relationship between Bloomberg and Bush was so tight that the New York Post ran a story headlined, “Bloomberg & Bush bro’s bromance.”

So if you find yourself having trouble deciding who you ought to support in 2016, just look to Bloomberg, who opposes your right to keep and bear arms, your freedom to make your own dietary choices, and the use of coal for energy. He also supported Obama’s immigration push.

Jeb is his man. And that means Jeb is your man if you support Obama’s approach to immigration and are not concerned about gun rights.

Well, having worked with people in media, many do look different in person. It is kind of how people do their day to day stuff and pass people all the time. If Clinton made no big to do, she could easily blend in certain situations.

Lindsey Graham Says He's '91 Percent Sure' He'll Get In 2016 GOP Presidential Primary But Needs Campaign Cash

    April 19, 2015

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham said Sunday that he’s “91 percent sure” he’ll get into the 2016 presidential race -- inching closer to a longshot challenge to the well-funded Republican front-runners.

Graham, a Republican and a military hawk, told “Fox News Sunday” that his foreign policy will be better than the plans put forth by Republican candidate Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul and Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

“I think I’ve got a good message,” he said. “I’ve been more right than wrong on foreign policy.”

Graham also stood behind his more moderate views on climate change, closing tax loopholes and comprehensive immigration reform, declaring he could win South Carolina, which is largely conservative and an early-primary state.

“If I’m on the ballot, I’ll win,” said the 59-year-old Graham, a former Air Force pilot and military lawyer.

Still, he acknowledged that challenges of financing a campaign while not being among the handful of leading candidates in early polling.

If I raise the money, I’ll run,” Graham also told Fox News.

Top Republican challenger Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who announced his candidacy last week, for example, already has a reported $40 million or more in financial commitments.

And super PACs for Texas Sen. Ted Cruz reportedly raised about $31 million within a week of Cruz last month announcing his 2016 presidential run, while former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who has yet to officially declare a 2016 candidacy, purportedly wants to raise $100 million.

And just in case you needed another reason to vote for him...

Graham Knocks Cruz On Guns And Tyranny: 'We Tried That Once... I'm Not Looking For An Insurrection'

    April 16, 2015

Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz's argument that the Second Amendment provides the "ultimate check against government tyranny" is a bit too extreme for potential 2016 rival and fellow Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC).

"Well, we tried that once in South Carolina. I wouldn't go down that road again," Graham said, in an apparent reference to the Civil War. "I think an informed electorate is probably a better check than, you know, guns in the streets."

Speaking to a few reporters near the Senate floor Thursday, Graham was answering questions from TPM about the Texas firebrand and presidential candidate's argument made in a fundraising email that the Second Amendment confers a right to revolt against the government.

"The 2nd Amendment to the Constitution isn't for just protecting hunting rights, and it's not only to safeguard your right to target practice. It is a Constitutional right to protect your children, your family, your home, our lives, and to serve as the ultimate check against governmental tyranny -- for the protection of liberty," Cruz wrote in the email Thursday, with the subject line "2nd Amendment against tyranny."

Graham demurred. "I'm not looking for an insurrection. I'm looking to defeat Hillary," he said. "We're not going to out-gun her."

While a consistent supporter of gun rights, Graham voiced a more mainstream legal view of the Second Amendment, as the Supreme Court first articulated in the landmark 2008 case District of Columbia v. Heller, that individuals have a right to possess a firearm for lawful self-defense.

"I think the Second Amendment allows people to protect their homes and their property and be secure in their persons," the senator said. "I think in a democracy the best check on government is voter participation. I think the First Amendment probably protects us more there."

    What a clueless cocksucker.

Here's what Graham was referring to in that second piece:

Sen. Ted Cruz: 2nd Amendment ‘a Fundamental Check on Government Tyranny’

    April 9, 2015
    By AWR Hawkins

On April 9, Breitbart News had the opportunity to talk with Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) about guns and gun rights, and he told us that the Second Amendment “serves as a fundamental check on government tyranny.”

Cruz answered a question about the importance of the Second Amendment:

Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story described the Second Amendment as the palladium of our liberties. It is foundation to free men and free women being able to defend their homes, their families, their lives and liberty, and it also serves as a fundamental check on government tyranny.

As a follow-up to the first question, Breitbart News then asked why guns are important for free people?

    Cruz responded:

America was founded on a revolutionary concept. Namely, that our rights don’t come from government, they come from God Almighty. The natural rights of man include life, liberty, and property. Each of those rights is dependent upon being able to preserve the safety and security of your own family. In fact, the very first Congress not only acted to protect our Second Amendment rights but mandated the militia act; that adult free men must own a musket.

Lastly, we asked Senator Cruz what he says to people or groups of people who respond to tragedy by pushing one more gun law or one more gun control?

    Cruz responded:

I am a constitutionalist, I believe we need to protect our constitutional liberties and honor the Bill of Rights. One of the most dismaying trends of the last six years under the Obama administration has been the relentless assault–from the federal government–on our constitutional liberties.

Indeed, following the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook, President Obama could have sought bipartisan cooperation to target violent criminals and come down on them like a ton of bricks. Instead, unfortunately, he used that tragedy as an excuse to try to go after the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens. I was glad to help lead the effort to stop President Obama’s unconstitutional assault on the Second Amendment. As a result, millions of Americans spoke up to defend our constitutional liberties, and every single Obama proposal that would have undermined the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms was voted down on the Senate floor.

In politics, lots of candidates talk a good game but voters are looking for a proven record. For two decades I have been proud to fight to defend the Second Amendment. Today is a time for truth, and we need leaders willing to stand and lead the fight to defend our constitutional liberties.

Adam Carolla: ‘I Want to Support’ Ted Cruz

    April 17, 2015

Comedian and author Adam Carolla stated “”I want to support Ted. I love me some Ted Cruz” on Friday’s episode of “The Adam Carolla Show.”

After Cruz “a lot of choices” for voters who want “someone who’ll go along to get along,” Carolla remarked “Jeb Bush being one of them perhaps?” Cruz responded that he would leave that determination to the voters.

Carolla later added, “I want to support Ted. I love me some Ted Cruz,” and that Cruz has a “very impressive background…very impressive story.”

In Spanish Interview, Marco Rubio Says It’s ‘Important Not To Cancel’ Obama’s Executive Amnesty

    April 18, 2015

Florida U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio offered a measure of support for President Obama’s first executive amnesty program, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, during a recent interview he conducted in Spanish this week with Univision’s Jorge Ramos.

Rubio’s comments mark a reversal of sorts from criticism he offered of DACA last year, and they also put him at odds with the conservative Republican base, which he will need in his corner if he hopes to win the 2016 GOP presidential nomination.

“But DACA, I think it’s important not to cancel it from one moment to the next because you already have people benefiting from it.” Rubio told Ramos in the interview, which was posted online and translated by Grabien.

Rubio did say that he believes DACA, which Obama announced in 2012 and granted amnesty to so-called DREAMers, should end, but only after immigration reform is passed.

“Well, at some point it is going to have to end, that is to say, it can’t continue being the permanent policy of the United States,” said Rubio, who conducted two interviews with Ramos: one in Spanish and the other in English. Ramos did not ask Rubio about DACA or immigration for the English-language discussion.

“I believe, if I become President, it is going to be possible to achieve immigration reform,” Rubio told Ramos in Spanish.

That rationale is similar to what Obama has used to defend his implementation of DACA and his more recent executive amnesty program, Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents. Obama has repeatedly said that he acted unilaterally because Congress failed “to put a bill on my desk.”

Critics of Obama’s two amnesty pushes argue that his actions were illegal and unconstitutional.

Rubio’s comments to Ramos on DACA are much softer than statements he made last July during the height of the flood of Central American unaccompanied minors.

“Furthermore, because the recent wave from Central America spiked after DACA was announced, it is in our interest to wind down this program,” Rubio said in a statement released on July 24. “If you are not currently in it, you should not be eligible for it.”

Immigration will likely prove to be Rubio’s biggest hurdle in winning the GOP presidential nomination. He and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush are the two Republican hopefuls whose views on immigration reform are seen as most out of step with the conservative Republican base.

Rubio came under heavy criticism for his involvement in 2013’s so-called “Gang of Eight” immigration reform proposal. If it had passed, the measure would have provided a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants as well as work visa options.

Ben Carson and Carly Fiorina have officially announced they're running for President.

    Sorry to say but...

In my opinion, Ben Carson has neither the gravitas nor convictions to be the type of President we need now. I think he'd be much better suited to being a Representative or Senator than President.

Carly Fiorina, I like what she's been saying and the strong private sector leadership experience is good but I don't think she's got enough household recognition (she's only at about 1% in the last poll I saw) and truth be told, I don't know where she stands on important issues and how strongly she stands behind them. In all honesty, she'd really make Ted a halfway decent running mate with the private sector leadership skills and the fact she's a woman would help attract women to Ted's ticket. Let's face it, another strong contender like Rand would never play second fiddle to Ted nor the other way around.

No big surprise, but Senator Bernie Sanders (I) Vermont (Self proclaimed socialist I might add) has announced his candidacy for President and MotherJones website adores him.

Oh yeah, I forgot about him.

It would be really funny (and actually a bit pathetic) if he beat out Hillary.

Just what everybody's been clamoring for! Mike Huckabee is getting into the race!

Boy, if I could tell you how many people I've heard say, "Man, I really wish Mike Huckabee would run for President again!"

    Oh wait, I can.

    None.

I've heard no one say that.
