provides the following summary translation of an article in Qianzhan.com (前瞻 Forward
Looking), a Chinese-language news site headquartered in the city of Shenzhen in
China’s southeastern Guangdong province, with offices in Beijing and Hong Kong:

Quite a few people have said that the conflict over the Diaoyus (known as Senkakus in
Japan) has passed the stage of oral confrontation and what follows may very probably
be direct military conflict.

It is especially so as, relying on US support, Japan is obviously declaring war against
China already.

Sources say that China’s Central Military Commission has directly given Chinese
military the instruction: “Fight if it is appropriate to fight.”

Sources pointed out that they had received information that Xi Jinping, Chairman of the
Central Military Commission, gave a relevant warning to a Japanese economic and
trade delegation that recently visited China.

Xi specially pointed out to the delegation when he met them, if Japan kept provoking
China and thus gave rise to an unstable situation, it alone has to be responsible for all
the consequences.

Chinese Fighter Jets Flew Within Meters Of Japanese Fighter Jets, Japan Says

Chinese fighter jets flew within a few dozen meters of Japanese military planes over the East China Sea, Japanese officials said on Sunday, prompting the defense minister to accuse Beijing of going "over the top" in its approach to disputed territory.

Chinese SU-27 fighters came as close as 50 meters (170 feet) to a Japanese OP-3C surveillance plane near disputed islets on Saturday and within 30 meters of YS-11EB electronic intelligence aircraft, the ministry said.

"Closing in while flying normally over the high seas is impossible," Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera told reporters in comments broadcast on TV Asahi.

"This is a close encounter that is outright over the top."

Onodera said Japan conveyed its concerns to the Chinese side through diplomatic channels. He also said the Chinese planes were carrying missiles.

A ministry official said it was the closest Chinese warplanes had come to aircraft of Japan's Self-defense force.

China's foreign ministry could not be immediately reached for comment.

Tensions have been running high between China and its neighbors over Beijing's assertive stand on claiming land and sea territory.

China lays claim to Japanese-administered islets in the East China Sea, known as Senkaku in Japanese and Diaoyu in Chinese. It is also pressing its claim to almost all the South China Sea, brushing aside claims by several southeast Asian states.

China's proclamation last November of an air defense zone covering disputed islands and areas in the South China Sea have raised concerns that a minor incident in disputed areas could quickly escalate.

Sino-Japanese ties have long been strained by allegations in China that Japan has not properly atoned for its wartime aggression and by the spat over the uninhabited islands.

Japan scrambled fighter jets against Chinese planes 415 times in the year ended in March, up 36 percent on the year, while in waters near the disputed islands, patrol ships from both countries have been playing cat-and-mouse, raising fears of an accidental clash.

Japanese land, sea and air forces joined last week to simulate the recapture of a remote island, underscoring Tokyo's concerns about the security of the islets.

Tensions between China and its neighbors have also risen sharply in the South China Sea in recent weeks, following the deployment of a Chinese oil rig in waters also claimed by Vietnam. The deployment sparked anti-Chinese riots in Vietnam.

The Philippine foreign ministry this month accused China of reclaiming land on a disputed reef in the South China Sea and said it appeared to be building an airstrip.

BEIJING – Chinese planes and ships held war games in the Sea of Japan last week, the military said, during which Beijing displayed its latest-generation frigate at a time of bitter territorial disputes with Asian neighbors.
The Defense Ministry said in a statement on its website late Saturday that the long-range exercises staged Friday pitted a red army against a blue one in a simulated bomber attack on a naval task force.
It quoted the commander of an unidentified flight wing under the East Sea Fleet, Zhang Wenzhong, as saying the planes found, identified and struck their targets in a "radically short time."
The statement made no mention of what sort of conflict the exercise was intended as a response to, prospective foes or why the Sea of Japan was chosen as the location of the drills. However, China has grown increasingly assertive over its claim to a chain of uninhabited islands controlled by Japan, recently dispatching more than a dozen coast guard vessels as Chinese fishing vessels swarmed the surrounding waters.
The ministry said the main ships involved in the exercise were the Jingzhou, a latest-generation type 054A class stealth frigate of which China is planning to deploy more than two dozen, and the type 052C destroyer Xi'an.
The ministry said aircraft were guided to their targets with the aid of early warning planes.
Other types of aircraft involved weren't identified, although China has been touting the capabilities of its latest-generation long-range H-6K strategic bomber equipped with the DH-20 land-attack cruise missile, giving it the ability to hit targets as far away as Australia. Only Russia and the U.S. are currently able to launch cruise missiles from the air.
Along with its island dispute with Japan, China is involved in an intense rivalry with the U.S. over military dominance in the region. Tensions in the South China Sea have also risen after China refused to accept an international arbitration panel's ruling invalidating its claim to virtually the entire strategic water body.
China plans joint naval exercises with Russia in the South China Sea next month, a move criticized by the head of the U.S. Pacific fleet as increasing instability in the region.

China strongly warned a high-level Japanese official around late June that Tokyo should not send Self-Defense Forces to join U.S. operations that test the freedom of navigation in the disputed South China Sea, diplomatic sources said Saturday.
Japan will “cross a red line” if SDF vessels take part in so-called freedom of navigation operations, Ambassador Cheng Yonghua told the official, the sources said. Cheng even hinted at military action.
The warning was issued not long before an international tribunal ruled on conflicting claims in those waters.
The Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague ruled July 12 that China’s sweeping claims to most of the South China Sea, which overlap with those of the Philippines and other neighboring countries, have no legal basis. China has rejected the ruling, but the United States and Japan have called on Beijing to respect it.
China is expected to continue warning Japan. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will likely meet Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo on the fringes of a ministerial meeting between Japan, China and South Korea later this month.
The Japanese government has no plans to join the freedom of navigation operations, in which the United States since October has sent warships near artificial islands that China has built in the South China Sea. But it has left room for sending SDF ships to the disputed waters to protect U.S. ships under new security laws that have expanded SDF roles overseas.
Officials have said Japan can dispatch the SDF as long as the mission contributes to the country’s defense and does not violate restrictions imposed by the war-renouncing Constitution.
According to the sources, Cheng told the high-level official in Tokyo that Japan should not take part in a “joint military action with U.S. forces that is aimed at excluding China in the South China Sea.”
He also said China “will not concede on sovereignty issues and is not afraid of military provocations.”
The comments were apparently aimed at preventing Tokyo from interfering in the territorial dispute in the South China Sea, where Japan has no direct claims.
The official told Cheng that Japan has no plans to join the U.S. operations but strongly criticized China’s construction of outposts in the waters for military purposes.
The exchange took place amid heightened tensions sparked by a territorial dispute between China and Japan over the Japanese-controlled Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, which China calls the Diaoyus.
On June 9, a Chinese naval ship sailed into waters just outside Japanese territorial waters around the islands, leading Japan to lodge a protest against the unprecedented move.
Then-Vice Foreign Minister Akitaka Saiki summoned Cheng to the ministry and told him Japan would take “necessary actions” if Chinese naval ships entered its territorial waters. This may indicate that such military intrusion is Japan’s “red line” that would lead it to mobilize its Maritime Self-Defense Force.

Beijing is thought to have threatened Japan that it would launch military action if Tokyo pressed ahead with its stance on the South China Sea dispute. Chinese officials are reported to have conveyed the warning to a top-ranking Japanese official in June.
According to diplomatic sources, cited by Japan's Kyodo news agency, China's ambassador to Japan, Cheng Yonghua, told Japan that it would cross a "red line" if Japanese vessels took part in the so-called freedom of navigation operations launched by the US in the South China Sea. Cheng even went on to indicate that Beijing would not hesitate to take military action. This emerged only on Sunday, 21 August though the incident reportedly occurred in June.

Cheng was quoted as telling a Japanese official that China "will not concede on sovereignty issues and is not afraid of military provocations".
Japan has no direct claims in the South China Sea though the mineral-rich region is a hotbed of territorial disputes among an array of nations including China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Brunei. The sea has $5tn worth of trade passing through it every year.
Nonetheless, Japan and China are engaged in a bitter territorial row when it comes to the East China Sea.
In the South China Sea, the US has been involved in 'freedom of navigation' operations sending warships and patrol aircraft since October 2015 as part of its muscle-flexing exercises in the region and to counter China's aggressive position. This has been infuriating China, which claims the majority of the portions in the South China Sea.
Japan has not yet shown interest in directly joining the US's freedom of navigation operations but has not ruled out sending its Self-Defence Forces' vessels to the disputed waters. Japanese officials have argued the ships can be constitutionally dispatched as long as they do not trespass the war-renouncing constitution.
China's stern warning is thought to have come in June at the height of its territorial tensions with other nations. On 12 July, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in Th Hague chided China for itsunilateral sovereign claims in the region upholding a case filed by the Philippines. Beijing rubbished the ruling saying the court had no jurisdiction over the matter.

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has threatened that it will nuke Japan if the country defends Taiwan. In a video uploaded to Xigua Video, a Chinese online video-sharing platform, China has said that if Japan ‘dares to intervene when it decides to ‘liberate’ Taiwan, it will launch a full-fledged war against Japan, starting with attacks with nuclear bombs.

In the video uploaded on a Chinese Military channel named Liu Jun Tao Lue (roughly means “Military strategies”) on the platform, the CCP said that even if Japan deploys only one soldier, one plane and one ship in support of Taiwan, it will not respond with equal measure, but instead will start a full-scale war against Japan. ‘We will use nuclear bombs first, we will use nuclear bombs continuously until Japan declares unconditional surrender for the second time’. By ‘second time’, the CCP referred to the surrender of Japan to the allied forces after the nuclear bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II.

The video was spotted by Chinese-born human rights activist and author Jennifer Zeng, who posted it on Twitter and her blog. After she shared the details of the video, it was removed from Xigua. Jennifer Zeng shared the video along with English subtitles, based on which this report has been written.

The video added that they want to target Japan’s ability to endure a war. ‘As long as Japan realises it cannot afford to pay the price of war, it will not dare to send troops to the Taiwan Strait’, the CCP concluded in the video.


They said that after the first successful nuclear test by China in 1964, they had promised that they will not nuclear bomb against non-nuclear countries, and they will not use it first. However, in the current situation, a need to change this policy has arisen. Therefore, they have decided to make a ‘minor adjustment’ in this policy, which is the ‘Japan Exception’ theory.

CCP said that several times in the past Japan had tried to harm the interests of China, therefore if a war breaks out between China and Japan, China will take revenges for both current and past ‘crimes’ of Japan. It said that Japan is the only country to be hit by atomic bomb, and has a deep memory of the affects of atomic bomb attacks. ‘And it takes the United States, which nuked it, lying down. It is exactly because Japan has such a unique feeling that nuclear deterrence against Japan will get twice the result with half the effort,’ the video said.

Saying that by singling out Japan as an “exception”, by ignoring the policy of no first use of nukes, CCP said that it is warning Japan and informing the world that if Japan interferes militarily in China’s domestic affairs, including the unification of Taiwan by the mainland, nuclear weapons will surely be used against Japan, and will be used continuously until its unconditional surrender. There will be no peace talks in the meantime, the CCP emphasized.

They also added that they will take back the Diaoyu Islands and the Ryukyu Islands. ‘We will either manage them or let them be independent,’ the video said.

Somehow I can see Japan gaining nuclear weapons as a result of this sort of message, something that Japan could easily do with the capabilities it already possesses.
