Trespasser Freed From Pipe At United Water Plant In New Jersey, Faces Criminal Charges

    January 17, 2014

MANALAPAN, N.J. – Rescuers have freed a man who had been stuck for hours in a pipe at a water treatment plant in New Jersey.

Officials told CBS 2 around 11:30 a.m. that 26-year-old Asef Mohamed, of Manalapan, had been freed and airlifted to an area hospital. He was 10 to 12 feet down the pipe, which was not in use, WCBS 880′s Levon Putney reported.

United Water spokesman Rich Henning said Mohamed broke into the plant that treats and pumps water for the township of Manalapan. Workers heard cries for help coming from the pipe around 7 a.m. Friday.

“This was a person that purposely climbed a six-foot fence with three or four layers of barbed wire on top,” Henning said.

United Water officials said they have no idea why Mohamed did it, but are now looking at ways to tighten up security, Putney reported.

Manalapan police announced Friday afternoon that Mohamed is being charged with fourth-degree criminal trespassing and may face additional charges as the investigation continues, CBS 2′s Steve Langford reported.

Henning said the outflow pipe is used for cleaning a storage facility and is no more than 24 inches wide. He said the water quality was not affected by the incident.

Manalapan’s mayor told CBS 2 the town is considering the possibility of having Mohamed pay for the cost of the rescue operation.

I saw this story live on Friday and I figured it for a homeless or nutcase.

I didn't see it as a Jihad probe, but this dink is now on everyone's radar, so they're going to turn him loose and see who he contacts.

Media blackout: Muslim man found stuck in pipe at New Jersey water facility

    January 18, 2014

On Friday, when workers arrived at the water treatment facility in Manapalan, they "heard cries for help" and discovered a man lodged inside a 20-inch pipe outside of a storage tank.

The facility, which is operated by United Water, supplies drinking water to about 40,000 customers.

The man has been identified as 26-year-old Asaf Mohammed.

Director of operations, Jim Mastrokalos, told NJ.com:

He must have traversed through a basin and climbed up into a pipe for reasons unknown at this time."

The plant is surrounded by barbed wire fencing and workers are still trying to determine how the man was able to gain access to the facility without detection.

Mohammed has been charged with fourth-degree criminal trespassing.

In May 2013, seven Muslims from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Singapore were arrested in the middle of the night at the Quabbin Reservoir which supplies drinking water to the city of Boston as well as dozens of other Massachusetts communities.

The group of two women and five men told the state trooper who discovered them, that they were all chemical engineers and simply wanted to check out the facility.

Three locks had been cut to gain access to the reservoir.

Despite the fact that this incident occurred only a month after the Boston Marathon bombing, and the serious threat that could have been posed to a drinking water facility, no charges were ever filed against the group of trespassers.

The Massachusetts State Police appealed the decision, but to no avail.

The names of the 'chemical engineers' were never released to the public, and their whereabouts are currently unknown.

“There is no reason for anyone whatsoever to climb into a pipe”

This is a pattern. Atlas readers recall seven Muslim chemical engineering students who were caught at Boston’s Quabbin Reservoir in a no-trespass zone right after the Boston Marathon bombings.

“N.J. man rescued after 4 hours stuck in empty water pipe” UPI.com, January 17, 2014 (thanks to David Wood)

MANALAPAN TOWNSHIP, N.J., Jan. 17 (UPI) — A New Jersey man was rescued Friday after spending at least 4 hours trapped in an empty pipe at a water treatment plant, authorities said.Officials said Asef Mohammad, 26, of Manalapan Township scaled a chain-link and barbed-wire fence surrounding a United Water facility not far from his home, then climbed into a holding tank to reach a decommissioned 20-inch-diameter pipe, where he got stuck, the Asbury Park Press reported. Why he did it was still a mystery to officials.

“There is no reason for anyone whatsoever to climb into a pipe,” said Rich Henning, a spokesman for United Water. “It is a facility that pumps water, pumps it out of the ground.

“In 25 years in this business, I have never seen this happen.”

Jim Mastrokalos, director of operations for United Water, said workers heard a faint cry for help and eventually traced the voice to the pipe, where they found Mohammad about 10-12 feet into the pipe shortly after 7 a.m. EST, the newspaper said.

“Obviously, that pipe would not be the first place they’d look,” Mastrokalos said of the employees. “But they were proactive and didn’t ignore it.”

Assistant Fire Chief Ken Genieczko said rescue crews had to dismantle the pipe section by section to reach Mohammad, then used a harness to pull him out about 11 a.m.

Mohammad was described as alert and talking, though hypothermia was a concern, Genieczko said.

Mohammad later placed under arrest and was to be charged with fourth-degree trespassing, the newspaper said.
    More here:

First responders removed a Manalapan man from a 24-inch pipe within the United Water facility, located on Wilson Avenue in Manalapan Township, Friday morning.

Asaf Mohammad, 26, of Emily Drive in Manalapan was pulled out of the pipe at around 11 a.m. Friday, Captain Michael Fountain of the Manalapan Police Department said.

An employee of United Water heard someone screaming for help while he was walking the perimeter of the facility shortly after 7 a.m. He, and other employees, were able to pinpoint the screams from within the pipe, Fountain said.

First responders were able to break apart part of the pipe that was horizontal and then were able to look down through the vertical portion of the pipe were Mohammad was located. According to police, Mohammad went into the pipe head first, but was able to turn himself around while inside at one of the intersections underground and stand back up and responders were able to pull him out while he was standing.

According to police, Mohammad was naked when he was removed from the pipe. Authorities are unsure of how long he was in the pipe, but believe it to be several hours before the employees located him. Once Mohammad was extracted, he was flown by a medical helicopter to Robert Wood Johnson in New Brunswick for treatment. His condition appeared to be non-life threatening, according to Fountain, but hypothermia was a concern.

Police do not know how or why Mohammad entered the United Water facility or how he got inside of the pipe or onto the grounds. He has been charged with trespassing.

Fountain said that there is an officer at the hospital attempting to ascertain more information from Mohammad and detectives still investigating the grounds of the United Water facility in order to determine what precisely happened and to see if additional charges should be filed.

Along with the Manalapan Police Department and Englishtown Police Department, the Manalapan Township Fire Company #1, Gordons Corner Fire Department, Englishtown Fire Department, Englishtown-Manalapan First Aid Squad, New Jersey State Police Medevac all responded to the scene. The Monroe Fire Department, Middlesex County, Monmouth County, and New Jersey State Police all sent out their confined space rescue teams to the scene, as well.

Manalapan Mayor Jordan Maskowitz sent out an email alert Friday stating that United Water said that the incident does not affect the water quality and water supply to residents.

I'd have been okay leaving him in the pipe and slowly turning on the water flow until information was more forthcoming.

They should have just shot a few gallons of expanding foam into the pipe and come back a few days later.
