The Cubs played a 16-inning game that took nearly six hours to complete into Thursday morning, and had to be back at the ballpark this morning for an 11:35 a.m. start. And apparently the lack of sleep got to Junior Lake and/or the Cubs' equipment crew this morning.
The Cubs' starting left fielder put on the wrong jersey for this afternoon's game against the Pirates, donning the Cubs' regular road grey jersey with "CHICAGO" across the front while the rest of his teammates wore alternate road jerseys, inspired by the club's jerseys in the 1920s, with "CUBS" in block lettering across the front. The team has worn these jerseys in each of their first three games.
Lake grounded out in his first at-bat with the wrong jersey, but the Cubs held a 2-0 lead with him wearing it. He realized his mistake (watch the video above) in between the first and second innings and returned to the dugout shortly after, with the correct jersey on.
It was a long night for everyone.
