This Eerie Hole Opened Up at the 'End of the World'


Helicopters spotted this mysterious hole in northern Russia on Tuesday and scientists are on their way to investigate the scene, reports the Siberian Times.


The hole—estimated to be over 250ft wide—is located in the Yamal peninsula, a region affectionately meaning the “end of the world.” One scientist speculates that global warming in conjunction with natural gas lines may have caused the yawning cavity in the earth.


Anna Kurchatova from Siberia’s Sub-Arctic Scientific Research Centre believes the crater was a result of an explosion when a mixture of water, salt and natural gas exploded underground. Global warming, she claims, has caused the permafrost in Siberia to melt at an accelerated rate, placing stress on the natural gas reserves.


Yamal authorities are visiting the hole along with two scientists from the Centre for the Study of the Arctic and one from the Cryosphere Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Doesn't it appear from the photo that the hole was drilled into the earth? The hole is a very regular circle with initial tailings along the outer edge from when the drill contacted the soil. It is pretty darn large, though.

Just a quick seat of the pants analysis.

Depending on how deep the hole penetrated into the earth, gotta be careful of what might crawl out of there.

Mysterious, Giant Crater Appears in Siberia

Scientists are scratching their heads about an 80-meter-wide hole recently discovered in a remote part of Siberia called Yamal (which means "end of the world.")


No one is yet sure what's caused the hole -- a scientific team was traveling to the site Wednesday to investigate. Experts from the Centre for the Study of the Arctic and the Cryosphere Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences planned to take soil, air and water samples, the Siberian Times reported.


The massive hole resembles a deep sinkhole -- it's not clear how deep yet -- but a ring of soil around the edge appears to have been thrown outside of the crater.
Speculation about the cause of the hole includes an underground gas explosion or a meteorite hit.

Anna Kurchatova from the Sub-Arctic Scientific Research Centre told the Siberian Times that global warming, which is causing permafrost melting in Siberia, could have released gas trapped in the ice.


A spokesman from Russia's Emergencies Ministry told the Siberian Times it's unclear what caused the hole, but ruled out a space rock.


"We can definitely say that it is not a meteorite," he said.

A second massive crater has appeared in a remote part of Siberia on the Yamal Peninsula called "the end of the world." The new crater was discovered by reindeer herders about 30 kilometers from the first, reports the Moscow Times.
