Default London Luton Airport Suspicious Package Threat: 8 September 2014

Luton Airport evacuated as ‘suspect package’ found

Passengers were evacuated from the airport terminal at about 14:00 BST

Passengers have been evacuated from London Luton Airport after a “suspect package” was found.

The airport said people were sent out of the terminal after the package was found in the “security search area”, at about 14:00 BST.

Bedfordshire Police said the terminal had been evacuated while the package was being examined.

All incoming flights have been suspended and passengers are being advised to contact their airlines.

One user of Twitter, James Blake, said there was initially “chaos” at the airport.

Paul Green said it was a “bit chaotic”.

“One automated alarm telling us to stay where we are,” he posted. “Another telling us to leave.”

Passengers were later moved away from the terminal

But soon after, Jim Hearson said that everyone was calm and the staff were “coping well”.
He said food and drink was being given out to the passengers while they waited for further information.
The approach road to the airport had also been closed, it said.
The airport is about 30 miles (40km) from central London.

London's Luton Airport Reopens After Alert

    LONDON — Sep 8, 2014, 1:16 PM ET

Hundreds of passengers were evacuated and flights were suspended for hours Monday from Luton Airport near London after a suspicious package was found in a security-screening area.

Passengers were stranded outside the terminal as emergency services examined the suspicious item. The approach road to the airport was closed, triggering long delays for motorists.

An army bomb-disposal squad blew up the item in a controlled explosion and police said it was not dangerous. The airport reopened around 6 p.m.

Budget airline EasyJet said six flights landing at Luton had been diverted to other airports and 12 flights had been canceled as a result of the security scare.

Luton, northwest of London, caters mostly to short-haul flights by budget airlines.
