Default Science or fact. January 4th, 2015 planet allignments to cause temp weightlessness?

    http://dailybuzzlive.com/planetary-a...eightlessness/

According to the above NASA says that on January 4th at 9:47am PST we can experience weightlessness, albeit for a very short time. If we hit the exact moment, we may find it takes 3 seconds to land. Fact or not?

It seems to be a fake, but worth mentioning because it is making online rounds.

Let's delve into this a bit, shall we?

How big is the "area" of weightlessness? I mean, are we going to have oceans drifting into space or is it a column the size of a baseball?

What happens if you're at 90 degrees to the alignment? Do you suddenly fly to the side? Does the sideways pull suck you one way as the time approaches, then the other way as it passes? How about people on the opposite side of the planet? Does everyone suddenly weigh twice as much?

You know the old saying, possession is 9 tenths of the law? Well, the Earth owns us, it ain't letting go for something millions of miles away.

Good analysis. I thought about the opposite planet side too. A man of 200lbs is for a brief time 400 or even 1000 lbs. Ouch.

    Utter nonsense.

    Inverse square law.

    Mass of Pluto = 1.30900 × 1022 kilograms
Mass of Jupiter = 1.898E27 kg (317.8 Earth mass)

Pluto is SIGNIFICANTLY less massive than Jupiter. Whatever little amount of gravity might reach Earth from there is insignificant in comparison to that of Jupiter, which is nil.

You would NOT be pulled into Jupiter if you were free floating in space. Eventually, to they sun, yes, but not Jupiter.

As Mal rightly points out, the Earth "owns us". We are much closer to the center of the Earth by hundreds of miles as opposed to even Jupiter or the Sun which is millions of miles.

Inverse square law says In physics, an inverse-square law is any physical law stating that a specified physical quantity or intensity is inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the source of that physical quantity.

In layman's terms, if you double the distance from the source of gravity (light, radio frequencies etc) the strength of the "signal" decreases by four.

    From wikipeda:

The lines represent the flux emanating from the source. The total number of flux lines depends on the strength of the source and is constant with increasing distance. A greater density of flux lines (lines per unit area) means a stronger field. The density of flux lines is inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the source because the surface area of a sphere increases with the square of the radius. Thus the strength of the field is inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the source.

Earth will not Experience Weightlessness on January 4, says NASA

Submitted by Felix Balthasar on 2014, December 29 - 12:36

A rumor was spreading fast online that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has revealed about six-day darkness on Earth in January 2015. When the space agency came to know about the hoax news, it cleared all the speculations. After some days, there is one more rumor which claimed that the planet will experience weightlessness for about five minutes on January 4 next year.
The hoax news has gone viral on social networking websites. In the post on social networks, a screenshot of NASA could be seen, where the agency has tweeted that on January 4, earth will experience weightlessness for about five minutes. The impact will cause objects and people to float in the air for a short while. According to the hoax, the planetary alignment will decrease the gravity for few minutes.
The news was originally posted by Daily Buzz Live, a website that usually posts humor and fake news. According to an article posted on the website, "Planetary Alignment On Jan 4, 2015 Will Decrease Gravity For 5 Minutes Causing Partial Weightlessness. Strange natural occurrences are happening in the world today. But nothing more magnificent than the one you will experience on January 4, 2015".
According to the website, Patrick Moore, an astronomer from Britain, said that on January 4, 2015, planet Pluto will pass behind Jupiter, in relation to earth. The alignment will counteract earth's gravity. This in turn will allow the objects and people to float in the air. As per the post, to feel weightlessness, it is important to jump in the air at about 9:47 am on January 4. It could take about three seconds to land back on the surface, the website stated.
NASA has denied any such event on January 4, 2015. According to the space agency, earth is not going to experience any weightlessness and the hoax news should not be believed by anyone.

Hoax Alert: Viral Planetary Alignment Phenomenon That Causes Brief Weightlessness is Fake

By Anne Lu | December 30, 2014 2:05 AM EST
The planetary phenomenon that people on Earth are expected to experience on Jan 4, 2015 is a hoax. The reported Jovian-Plutonian gravitational effect, which is said to make people feel weightless for a short time during a planetary alignment, is going viral online, but unfortunately isn’t true at all.

    REUTERS/NASA/Johns Hopkins Uni
New Horizons took this image of the icy moon Europa rising above Jupiter's cloud tops after the spacecraft's closest approach to Jupiter. The spacecraft was 2.3 million kilometers (1.4 million miles) from Jupiter and 3 million kilometers (1.8 million miles) from Europa when the picture was taken. Robotic missions to Mars and Jupiter's icy moon Europa should top NASA's to-do list for an upcoming decade of planetary exploration, the U.S. National Research Council recommended on Monday. For the decade 2013-2022, five separate panels of scientists and experts agreed on a suite of missions that would get the greatest scientific return from money spent, recognizing that even these projects could be budget busters.

Daily Buzz Live recently posted an article about planetary alignment that would render partial weightlessness on earth. This so-called phenomenon is said to be happening on January 4 when Pluto passes directly behind Jupiter. Apparently, this rare alignment means that their combined gravitational force would exert a stronger tidal pull, temporarily counteracting the Earth’s gravity, and therefore would make everyone feel weightless for a short time.

To make the story look credible, the Web site embedded a tweet purporting to be from NASA’s official account. It also quoted English astronomer Patrick Moore, who died in 2012.

“Moore told scientists that they could experience the phenomenon by jumping in the air at the precise moment the alignment occurred. If they do so, he promised, they would experience a strange floating sensation,” the article reads.
It adds, “But, if you jump in the air at 9:47 AM PST, on January 4, 2015, it should take you about 3 seconds to land back on your feet instead of the usual 0.2 seconds.”
The article has been shared over 1.4 million times on Facebook. Unfortunately, there is no such weightlessness phenomenon caused by planetary alignment.
The Daily Dot has debunked the hoax, explaining that the “dumbest astrophysics hoax” is just that, a hoax, albeit coming from a site that also posts factual news. Unlike other Web sites that are run fake news stories, Daily Buzz Live posts factual articles along with fiction, which makes it difficult for readers to spot which articles are real and which ones are satires.
As for the embedded tweet from NASA, it’s also fake. The tweet, which included the hashtag #beready, was likely done using a tweet maker like LemmeTweetThatForYou.com to make the post look official.
It’s not as if that hoax is new as well. A quick search on Wikipedia reveals the Jovian-Plutonian gravitational effect is a hoax that has been around since 1976. Moore, a respected scientist in the field of astronomy, invented the alleged phenomenon for April Fool’s Day on BBC radio.

Oh its ok. I didn't believe it. I posted it because it was such an outlandish claim. Sure, I'd like to experience weightlessness, but also knew if true, it would be the end of civilization as we know it.
