Russia has deployed its fleet of strategic bombers to double the volume of airstrikes on Islamist targets in Syria, Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu has announced. Vladimir Putin has ordered a cruiser to coordinate operations with French naval forces in the Mediterranean.
“We are conducting a mass airstrike campaign against Islamic State targets in Syria. We have now doubled the number of sorties, which is allowing us to conduct operations throughout the length and breadth of the country,” Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said during a Security Council meeting in Moscow chaired by the Russian president.
Shoigu said that Russia’s Tu-95, Tu-22 and Tu-160 strategic bombers have been brought into the operation, while the Air Force command added that the strike group has been bolstered with 37 new planes, including Su-34 bombers and Su-27 fighter jets.
The head of the General Staff reported that the new phase of the anti-ISIS campaign will involve 25 long-range bombers flying out of airfields in Russia.
“By conducting military missions in Syria, you are protecting Russia and her citizens,” Putin told his military chiefs. “Our air campaign in Syria must not only be continued, it must be boosted, in such a way that the criminals are made aware that retribution is inevitable.”
The Russian president has issued orders for Russia’s Moskva cruiser, covering the Russian base in Latakia from the Mediterranean Sea, to work together with a French naval group led by flagship Charles De Gaulle, a 26 fighter-jet aircraft carrier, which is departing for Syria this week.
“The French naval group, led by the air carrier, will soon reach your area of operations. We need to establish direct contact with it, and treat it as an ally,” the Russian president said. “We need to develop of a joint action plan for both sea and air operations.”
The Kremlin said that the parameters for a joint mission had been agreed upon by Putin and French President Francois Hollande, following a personal phone call.
“The two leaders focused their attention on bilateral and multilateral cooperation in combating terrorism,” a Kremlin statement said. “This includes closer ties and joint operations between the military command and intelligence services of Russia and France in Syria.”
MOSCOW, November 17. /TASS/. The Kremlin does not comment on media reports claiming that a missile strike was delivered from a Russian submarine in the Mediterranean Sea at the Islamic State terrorist organization’s facilities in Syria, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday.
Peskov said "nothing was said about that" in a report that President Vladimir Putin listened to in the Defense Ministry earlier Tuesday.

Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu reported to President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday that Russian aircraft have doubled the number of strikes against Islamic State facilities in Syria, which made it possible to cover all terrorist facilities in the country.
Russia has involved strategic and long-range aircraft in strikes against the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization in Syria. Tupolev Tu-160 and Tu-95MS strategic bombers fired 34 air-launched cruise missiles at terrorist targets in the provinces of Aleppo and Idlib.
Russia’s Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov told Vladimir Putin that Russia will use long-range planes in addition to bombers and fighter jets to deliver strikes on Islamic State targets in Syria.
"To fulfil your orders to intensify strikes against targets of the Islamic State and other extremist organizations, the General Staff has worked out a plan of further air operation. Along with the intensification of sorties from the Hmeymim airbase in Syria, the plan provides to involve an extra of 25 long-range planes, eight Sukhoi-34 bombers, four Sukhoi-27SM fighter jets," he said.
The Russian aviation grouping at the moment comprises more than 50 aircraft and helicopters, including the Sukhoi Su-34 and Su-24M bombers, Su-25 attack aircraft, Su-30SM fighters and Mil Mi-8 and Mi-24 helicopters.
The Russian military started an operation against militants of the Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist groups (outlawed in Russia) in Syria on September 30 at the request of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Russia’s Aerospace Forces grouping has delivered over 4,000 missile and bomb strikes against terrorist facilities since the start of its operation in Syria. Besides, overnight to October 7, the Caspian Flotilla ships delivered a massive strike on the IS objectives in Syria, using Kalibr NK shipborne cruise missiles.

A Jewish teacher has been stabbed in Marseille by three people claiming to be Islamic State supporters, say prosecutors.
Three people on two scooters approached the teacher in the street before showing him a picture of Mohamed Merah, who killed seven people in a series of attacks in southern France in 2012, on a phone.
"The three people insulted, threatened and then stabbed their victim in the arm and leg. They were interrupted by the arrival of a car and fled," prosecutor Brice Robin said.
One of the attackers was wearing an Islamic State t-shirt, he added.
The victim suffered three knife wounds and was taken to hospital, but officials said his life was not in danger.
France is on heightened alert after last Friday's terror attacks in Paris in which 129 people were killed and over 350 others hurt.
The atrocity, which was claimed by the Islamic State jihadist group, was the worst in French history.
Interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve said "everything is being done to capture" those who stabbed the teacher and another person who punched and slashed a Muslim woman.
The veiled woman was leaving the subway when she was attacked by someone who made reference to her clothing, according to a ministry statement.
Last month, a rabbi and two Jewish worshippers were stabbed in a knife attack in Marseille.

French officials have named a police dog which was killed during a major counter-terror operation in the northern Parisian suburb of Saint-Denis.
Police targeting the suspected mastermind of the Paris shootings, Abdelhamid Abaaoud, raided a number of apartments in Saint-Denis in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
At least five officers suffered minor injuries in the raid, some after a woman at the scene detonated a suicide vest full of explosives.
Around seven explosions and sustained gunfire were heard by neighbours and officers throughout the morning, during which two terror suspects were killed and around seven arrests made.
Police officials told reporters that an assault and explosive search dog was killed during the operation.
The official profile for Police Nationale later tweeted that Diesel, a seven-year-old Belgian Malinois, “was killed by terrorists in the current operation in Saint-Denis”.
With solid information about the raid still scarce and a large area still cordoned off, the tweet was shared thousands of times in a matter of minutes.

(CNN)The Paris terrorist attackers conducted prior surveillance of at least some of the locations they attacked and showed signs of tactical planning and military-style training, a new U.S. intelligence bulletin says.
The bulletin issued by the FBI, Homeland Security department and the National Counterterrorism Center warns U.S. law enforcement to review training to deal with active shooters, according to U.S. officials.
The bulletin, which was described to CNN and confirmed by other U.S. officials, advises local law enforcement to go over active shooter scenarios and asks for them to be on the lookout for any suspicious people doing surveillance at soft targets and similar locations.

A cell phone recovered from a garbage bin near the scene of the Bataclan concert venue and believed to belong to one of the terrorists contained a map of the theater, the bulletin said. The phone contained encrypted applications. As CNN was first to report, the cell phone also had a text message, indicating an apparent method used to coordinate the attacks.
The attackers rented three cars in Belgium before moving to a safe house they rented in France.

The multiple targets and apparent discipline showed likely prior training and familiarity with the targets to ensure the attacks would be effective.
European intelligence has assessed that some of the attackers traveled to Syria and their use of assault rifles and suicide belts appeared to indicate training, according to the U.S. officials who confirmed the bulletin contents.

800 Shotguns Headed To Belgium From Turkey Seized In Italy

Following the ISIS assault on Paris that left 130 dead prompting Francois Hollande to declare that France is “at war,” authorities quickly established a link to the infamous Brussels suburb of Molenbeek.
The working class, immigrant neighborhood - which is separated from the historical district by a canal and is but a 20 minute subway ride from Brussels' European Quarter - has become synonymous with radicalization and terror. As we put it last week, “what Charlestown is to bank robbers, Molenbeek is to European jihadists.”
"The assassination of the Afghan anti-Taliban commander Ahmed Shah Massoud, immediately before the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001; the train bombings in Madrid in 2004; and the killing of four people at the Brussels Jewish Museum in 2014; the foiled shooting on a high-speed train, the anti-terrorist raid in the eastern Belgian town of Verviers, the attack on a Paris kosher supermarket and, finally, the Nov. 13 attacks on the French capital — all had some connection to Molenbeek,” The New York Times wrote earlier this month.
But it’s not just Molenbeek. In January, two operatives working under the direction of Paris mastermind Abdelhamid Abaaoud were killed when Belgian police raided a safehouse in Verviers.
In short, Belgium has apparently become a kind of hub for jihadists. Not wanting to let a good crisis go to waste, the entire country - and especially Brussels - has been on high alert for nearly a week now as authorities hunt for several suspects who are purportedly planning a “serious and imminent” terrorist attack.
In what may be the latest evidence that there are indeed multiple active terror cells operating in the country (or in what may merely be evidence that some anonymous Belgian collector just really loves Winchesters), Italian police seized some 800 shotguns bound for Belgium today at the Port of Trieste.
Here's the story from La Stampa (translated):
A load of about 800 shotguns, from Turkey to Germany, Holland and Belgium, has been discovered and seized by the Financial Police and the Customs at the Port of Trieste. The weapons of war were transported, without authorization, by a tractor-trailer driven by a Dutch citizen turkish. The cargo consisted of 781 shotguns model "Winchester SXP" from 12-51 cm, 66 shotguns "Winchester SXP" from 12-41 cm. 15 rifle and kicking.
Tir had landed in Trieste on 23 November. The weapons were contained in hundreds of cardboard boxes, each of which containing a shotgun, all directed in Belgium. Given the peculiarities of the load, its origin and destination, the Financial Police and customs officials have declined to elaborate documentation. Although there were no irregularities of customs, it had not been requested permission to the authorities of public security for the transportation.

The finance police, who are often in charge of port security, said that while customs rules had not been violated, the Turkish truck driver did not have the licences needed to transport the 781 Winchester SXP shotguns.
Pump-action Winchester SXP rifles are made for hunting and are not considered assault weapons, but police said they had "substantially" increased their border inspections in the wake of the Nov. 13 Paris attacks and subsequent alert in Belgium.
"Given the delicate nature of the cargo, its origin and its destination, the documentation regarding the rifles was immediately examined," the statement said.
What should immediately jump out at you here is that these were being sent from Turkey to Belgium. While anyone who's followed Syria's protracted civil war knows that Ankara has long been suspected of aiding and abetting Islamic State (just ask the PKK, or Newsweek, or even ISIS themselves), Erdogan's role in financing the group was thrown into sharp relief this week after Vladimir Putin accused Turkey of facilitating the sale of illegal Islamic State crude (from which the group derives some half a billion dollars per year in revenue).
We've documented the Turkey-ISIS connection on dozens of occasions this year, but notably we revisited the link on Tuesday courtesy of Nafeez Ahmed in "NATO Is Harboring ISIS, And Here's The Evidence" and then on Wednesday evening, we took our first peak down what is likely to be a very deep rabbit hole in "Meet The Man Who Funds ISIS: Bilal Erdogan, The Son Of Turkey's President."
Given all of this, one is certainly left to wonder just where in Turkey these 800 pump action shotguns came from and, more importantly, who sent them to Belgium. While we're sure there were likely a string of intermediaries involved, we wouldn't be surprised to learn that ultimately, there's a connection to Ankara and from there, to ISIS.
