A suspected Islamic extremist wielding an assault rifle and a handgun has killed about 20 people after taking party-goers hostage inside a gay club in Orlando.
The gunman was carrying a suspicious device, possibly a suicide vest, when he opened fire on the dance floor inside Pulse in the early hours of this morning.
Orlando Police Chief John Mina said authorities have not determined the exact number of people killed, but that 'approximately 20' have died. Another 42 people were taken to hospital.
An FBI spokesman said the mass shooting is being investigated as an act of terrorism, adding that they are looking into whether this was an act of domestic or international terror, and if the shooter was a lone wolf.
Police said the gunman, who was shot dead by officers, was believed to be in his 20s was not a local man, while the FBI believe he may have 'leanings to radical Islamic terrorism'.
The killings took place less than four miles from where The Voice singer and YouTube star Christina Grimmie, 22, was shot dead at The Plaza Live in Orlando on Friday.

Party-goers were urged to 'get out and keep running' as bullets started flying at around 2am local time.
Around 5am authorities sent in a SWAT team to rescue the hostages, and the suspect then died in a gunfight.
Police used an explosive device to distract the hostage taker and rescue around 30 people. During the gunfire, an officer was shot, but he was saved by his helmet.
It was thought that at least one hostage had been locked in a bathroom with gunshot wounds.
At around 6am local time police tweeted: 'Pulse Shooting: The shooter inside the club is dead.'
Jon Alamo said he was inside the club, which was hosting a Latin-themed night, when a man holding a weapon entered the room he was in.
'I heard 20, 40, 50 shots,' Alamo said. 'The music stopped.'
Club-goer Rob Rick said it happened just before closing time. 'Everybody was drinking their last sip,' he said.

He estimated more than 100 people were still inside when he heard shots, got on the ground and crawled toward a DJ booth.
A bouncer knocked down a partition between the club area and an area in the back where only workers are allowed. People inside were able to then escape through the back of the club.
Christopher Hansen said he was in the VIP lounge when he started hearing gunshots.
'I was thinking, are you kidding me? So I just dropped down. I just said please, please, please, I want to make it out,' he said. 'And when I did, I saw people shot. I saw blood. You hope and pray you don't get shot.'
He continued to hear shooting even after he emerged, where police were telling people to back away from the club. He saw injured people being tended to across the street.
Mina Justice was outside the club trying to contact her 30-year-old son Eddie, who texted her when the shooting happened and asked her to call police.
He told her he ran into a bathroom with other club patrons to hide. He then texted her: 'He's coming.'

'The next text said: `He has us, and he's in here with us,'' she said. 'That was the last conversation.'
Ricardo Almodovar was in the nightclub. He said: 'Shooter opened fire at around 2.00am. People on the dance floor and bar got down on the floor and some of us who were near the bar and back exit managed to go out through the outdoor area and just ran.
'I am safely home and hoping everyone gets home safely as well.' Juan Rivera said on Twitter: 'Never seen so many dead bodies on the floor, God is good that my friends and I didn't get shot'.
Anthony Torres heard people screaming that others in the nightclub were dead.
Rosie Feba was in the club with her girlfriend and described the moment the shooting happened to the Orlando Sentinal.
She said: 'Everyone was getting on the floor.I told her [girlfriend] I didn't think it was real, I thought it was just part of the music, until I saw fire coming out of his gun.'
A police dispatcher described the incident as an 'active shooting'. Officers are advising locals to stay away from the area.
He said: 'There are injuries. I am not sure if there are any deceased at this time.'
'Officers are going in to search the building and to get people out,' the dispatcher said.

ISIS Muslim terrorists released a statement on their plan to attack Florida, and even put out a list with the names of people in Florida that they plan on killing. According to one report:

A pro-Isis group has released a hit list with the names of more than 8,000 peoplemostly Americans.

More than 600-people live in Florida, and one security expert believes that many of those targeted live in Palm Beach County and on the Treasure Coast.

The “United Cyber Caliphate” that hacked U.S. Central Command, 54,000 Twitter accounts and threatened President Barack Obama is the same pro-Isis group that’s reportedly created a “kill list” with the names, addresses and emails of thousands of civilian Americans.

Reports of the list came to light online when Vocativ reported the list was shared via the encrypted app, Telegram, and called on supporters to kill.

Former FBI agent-turned lawyer Stuart Kaplan says the threat is especially alarming, because the people on this list are civilians who don’t have the security necessary to protect themselves.

“It’s going to create some hysteria,” he said.

Kaplan believes civilians from our community are on the list.

“I would suspect a head of a hospital or, perhaps, a local community leader. Those are the individuals that may appear on the list–or just a local banker or local school teacher–someone who, for some reason, was in the public eye.”

Kaplan is concerned the list will inspire “lone wolf” style attacks.

“If in fact a sympathizer gets ahold of this list and is readily able to identify you as being his neighbor and, then, decides (because they’re a sympathizer) to go out and do something horrific to you, there is no way to calculate the potential or to prevent that.”

The list has not yet been made public.

We reached out to the FBI, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and Martin County Sheriff’s Office to see how credible they view the threat and what action they might be taking.

We are awaiting their response.

According to the Martin County Sheriffs office,the FBI is aware of this and the agency will work closely with the Joint-Terrorism Task Force to keep citizens safe.

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Orlando nightclub shooter called 911 around the time of the attack to pledge allegiance to ISIS and mentioned the Boston bombers, a U.S. official told CNN.

50 dead. 53 hospitalized. This is the worst terror attack in the U.S. since 9/11 and the worst mass shooting in the history of the United States.
The shooter has been identified as Omar Saddiqui Mateen, two law enforcement officials told CNN. The suspect is from Fort Pierce, Florida, officials say. Mateen is believed to be 29 years old.

He was shot and killed by Orlando police in an operation to free hostages he was said to be holding. It was suspected that he had a device strapped to his body, law enforcement sources said.

Neighbors and former classmates in Fort Pierce identified Mateen as the man in the attached photo.

Mateen was investigated by the FBI in the past for possibly having ties or being a sympathizer to Islamic extremism, according to a law enforcement official and a U.S. official. The law enforcement official told CNN that there were two cases opened on Mateen. The U.S. official said Mateen was not the main subject of at least one of those investigations. The investigations didn’t find evidence to charge him with anything.

In the past two weeks Mateen legally purchased a Glock pistol, found at the shooting scene, from a St. Lucie County area gun store, the law enforcement official said. He worked as a security guard, which allowed him to have a firearms license that meant minimal background checks when he bought guns.

The U.S. official said investigators have talked to Mateen’s family, who indicated he had expressed anti-gay feelings in the past.

The target

Patrons of the Pulse nightclub, which on its website describes itself as “the hottest gay bar in Orlando.” June is Pride Month.

The initial timeline

2 a.m. — Patron Christopher Hansen says he “just saw bodies going down.” The shooting “could have lasted a whole song,” he says.

To escape, customers had to jump an estimated six-foot privacy fence, since there was only one way out, a person who was at Pulse Nightclub during the shooting told CNN. The front door is the only way in and out of the nightclub, the witness said. The nightclub has two big rooms inside, one with a stage and a bar, and one room that is called the “White Room,” with its own bar and dance floor.

5 a.m. — An armored vehicle broke down the door and a wall for police to enter the club. It was during that assault that police said Mateen was shot dead by officers.

Other locations

FBI teams, along with local law enforcement, are working to clear the apartment where the shooter lived in Fort Pierce, a federal law enforcement told CNN.

Agents are going through the apartment with bomb squads and investigating materials there, the source said.

Reaction

“This is clearly an act of terrorism,” Florida Gov. Rick Scott said Sunday as he spoke to reporters about the shooting. “It’s sickening,” he said. “It should make every American angry.”

President Barack Obama was to address the nation at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the wake of the mass shooting. He will be speaking in the White House briefing room.

There has been no claim of responsibility for the Orlando nightclub terror attack on jihadi forums, but ISIS sympathizers reacted by praising the attack on pro-Islamic State forums, according to CNN Terrorism Analyst Paul Cruickshank.

There is new information on the horrific terror attack in Orlando last night that has killed at least 50 and wounded more than 100 in the largest mass shooting in American history.

Sources are telling the Daily Beast that suspected killer Omar Mateen had previously been investigated by the FBI in 2013 and 2014, making this yet another "known wolf" terror attack:

Omar Mateen of Port Saint Lucie, Florida, came to the attention of federal authorities twice prior to being identified as the gunman in the Orlando nightclub mass shooting, a senior law enforcement source told The Daily Beast.

Mateen 53 people and shot more than 100 in total at the Pulse gay nightclub early Sunday morning, in the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history.The senior law enforcement source reports that Mateen became a person of interest in 2013 and again in 2014. The Federal Bureau of Investigation at one point opened an investigation into Mateen but subsequently closed the case when it produced nothing that appeared to warrant further investigation.

“He’s a known quantity,” the source said. “He’s been on the radar before.”

Mateen was a U.S. citizen; his parents are from Afghanistan, CBS News reports.

But his father, Mir Seddique, told NBC News his son became angry when he saw two men kissing in Miami several months ago.
'This has nothing to do with religion,' he said. 'We are saying we are apologizing for the whole incident. We weren't aware of any action he is taking. We are in shock like the whole country.'
LA Pride is a three day weekend festival with scheduled performances from the likes of Carly Rae Jespen and Charlie XCX. Tens of thousands gathered in WeHo for the event.
The parade observed a moment of silence for the victims of the Orlando gay club attack at 10.45am on Sunday.
'We will not shrink away. We will not be stuck in our homes,' Garcetti said during a press conference in support of the LGBT community before the parade on Sunday.
'We will not go back in our closets….We are here to march, to celebrate and to mourn.”

The ISIS-aligned United Cyber Caliphate has distributed a new 'kill list' which contains the names of 7,858 Americans.
The group, using the Russia-based app Telegram gave the names, addresses, and email addresses of 8,318 people in total, making it one of the longest kill lists ISIS have ever put out.

They urged their supporters to 'kill them strongly to take revenge for Muslims'.

Vocativ reported that the kill list - published in English and Arabic - included the names of 1,445 people with addresses in California, believed to include many famous figures in Silicon Valley and Hollywood.

The list also has 643 names and addresses in Florida, 341 in Washington D.C., 333 in Texas, 331 in Illinois, and 290 in New York.
While most of those targeted were American, there were 312 'targets' in Canada, 69 in Australia and 39 in the U.K.

The other targets were in countries as varied as Israel, France, Indonesia, New Zealand and Jamaica.

Telegram said it shut down 78 ISIS related accounts in the aftermath of last year's Paris attacks, but jihadist recruiters are still using the app to groom youngsters and spread ISIS propaganda.

The list appeared on the app Telegram, one of the main applications ISIS uses to disseminate propaganda

In a statement released to Business Insider back in November, Telegram said: 'We were disturbed to learn that Telegram's public channels were being used by ISIS to spread their propaganda.

'As a result, this week alone we blocked 78 ISIS-related channels across 12 languages.'

But despite blocking the channels, many more are still active on the app.

'Lone wolves' often target individuals or locations based on ISIS propaganda but as yet there is no evidence that anyone has been targeted as a result of a post on Telegram.

Police: Heavily Armed Indiana Man Arrested Before California Gay Pride Event

An Indiana man armed with assault rifles and explosive chemicals told authorities in Southern California he wanted to harm a gay pride event in the area, police confirmed Sunday.

James Wesley Howell, 20, was arrested when Santa Monica police discovered three assault rifles, high capacity magazines and ammunition in his car, according to a news release from the Santa Monica Police Department. Investigators also recovered a five-gallon bucket "with chemicals capable of forming an improvised explosive device," police said.

Authorities encountered Howell while responding to a call about "suspicious circumstances" in Santa Monica shortly before 5 a.m. PT. Police said Howell was reportedly knocking on a resident's door and window. Howell's vehicle was registered in Indiana.

Santa Monica police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks tweeted that Howell told officers after he arrested that he wanted to harm the gay pride event in West Hollywood that was taking place about seven miles away later Sunday. Hundreds of thousands attend the annual event.

Seabrooks later tweeted that there are no known connections between Howell's arrest and the mass shooting this weekend that killed 50 people at a gay nightclub in Florida.

According to court records, Howell most recently lived in Jeffersonville, which is part of the Louisville metro area. He was arrested in Clark County in October 2015 on a felony charge of pointing a firearm and a misdemeanor charge of intimidation.

Court records show Howell pleaded guilty in April to the intimidation charge. The felony firearm charge was dismissed. Howell was sentenced to serve a year of probation. According to court records, he was to "forfeit all weapons" for the entirety of his probation period.

Trey Furnish, who attended middle school and high school with Howell, told The Indianapolis Star that "he was the quiet one in the class."

"He didn't talk much throughout those years," Furnish said. "There were times, back in high school, where he would find himself in arguments and fights because he would cross the line with what he said to people."

Those fights, Furnish said, were not a daily occurrence, though, and Furnish told The Star that he couldn't really think of a situation in which Howell spoke about his opinions regarding the LGBT community.

"I did not really see this coming, man," Furnish said. "But then again, I did not hang with this kid, or know him personally."

Howell's arrest is still under investigation by the Santa Monica Police Department, which says it is collaborating with the FBI.
