CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) -The Charlottesville Fire Department is investigating an explosion on the Downtown Mall.
The fire chief says there was no fire or smoke from the reported explosion near the Downtown Mall between 3rd street and Water street.
They are currently waiting on a report from Dominion Power.

OK, I get it. Police don’t want to jump to conclusions in high profile cases. But can police authorities please stop insulting the public when a Muslim starts attacking random strangers while yelling about Allah? The latest example of studied ignorance comes from St. Cloud, Minnesota, the thriving metropolis of Central Minnesota. From the St. Cloud Times:
Eight people were injured and the suspect died at Crossroads Center on Saturday after an attack reported about 8:15 p.m.Stop treating us like idiots!
St. Cloud Police Chief Blair Anderson said the victims were stabbed by a man dressed in a private security uniform.
An off-duty police officer from another jurisdiction shot and killed the attacker, Anderson said. Anderson did not say where that officer serves during the news conference that started after midnight.
According to St. Cloud Mayor Dave Kleis, the shooting happened inside Macy's.
Just before 11 p.m., St. Cloud Hospital Communications Specialist Chris Nelson told the Times that eight patients were taken to the hospital. Seven had injuries that were not life-threatening; one was admitted.
Anderson said the attacker, who was armed with a knife, reportedly made references to Allah during the attack and asked at least one person whether they were Muslim. But Anderson pointedly declined to call the attacks an act of terrorism, saying the motive isn't yet known. [emphasis added]
Can’t police acknowledge that there is an identifiable pattern of jihad terrorism, which the current incident mirrors? It’s fine to say that police are still collecting evidence and no conclusions have been reached. But don’t deny the obvious pattern, the obvious hypothesis!
Eigsht Minnesotans suffered stab wounds, some of them serious. The State of Minnesota has been subjected to the resettlement of tens of thousands of Somali Muslims, at tremendous costs in welfare, crime, and yes, Islamic terrorism.
Stop pretending that this isn’t an issue! Don’t jump to conclusions. But don’t deny the obvious, either.

A device exploded early Monday as a bomb squad robot examined a suspicious package that appeared to contain pipe bombs near an Elizabeth transit station, Mayor Chris Bollwage said.
A spokesman for Bollwage earlier said the explosion was a controlled detonation, but at a news briefing a few minutes later, Bollwage said the robot was "cutting into the device when it exploded."
"This was an explosive device" containing as many as five devices, he said. "Based on the loudness, I think people could have been severely hurt or injured if they had been in the vicinity."

Bollwage said he was "extremely concerned for the residents of the community" if "someone could just go and drop a backpack into a garbage can that has multiple explosives in it."

The explosion shortly before 1 a.m. Monday came as developments continued moving quickly more than 24 hours after a bombing Saturday night injured 29 people in Manhattan.
Authorities stopped a "vehicle of interest" in the New York blast at about 8:45 p.m. ET Sunday near the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in New York, the FBI said. Five people were being questioned by the FBI early Monday, officials said.
None of the five people had been charged, and the investigation was ongoing, authorities told NBC News.
New Jersey devices appear similar
Multiple senior law enforcement officials told NBC News that the suspicious device discovered Sunday night in New Jersey appeared appeared similar to a device that exploded earlier Saturday morning in Seaside Park, N.J.
The package was a backpack, and it was found by two men in a garbage can about 300 feet from the front door of a crowded pub in Elizabeth, said Bollwage, the mayor. When they saw wires and pipes, they dropped the backpack and immediately went to police headquarters, he said.
"We do not believe those two are involved," he said. "We believe they did the right thing."

New Jersey Transit suspended service between Newark Airport and the Elizabeth station, and Amtrak suspended service along parts of the Northeast Corridor.
New York devices may be similar
The explosion Saturday night injured 29 people in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood. Less than three hours later, a "possible secondary device" was found a few blocks away on 27th Street while officers were combing the area.
Investigators are analyzing possible similarities between the two devices and one that detonated Saturday morning in Seaside Park, New Jersey — including the fact that all three devices apparently contained old-style mobile flip phones — according to officials familiar with the probe.
The New York explosion was determined to have been an "intentional act," authorities said. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said it was clearly "an act of terrorism," although it hadn't been linked to an international terrorist group.
"A bomb going off is generically a terrorist activity," said Cuomo, who ordered 1,000 New York State Police and National Guard members deployed across the city.
Security had already been tightened in the city for the ongoing U.N. General Assembly, but the presence of officers throughout New York City after the blast will be "bigger than ever," Mayor Bill de Blasio said.
The explosion sent a dumpster flying more than 150 feet down the sidewalk and shattered windows more than a block away, a senior law enforcement official said.
After viewing the extensive destruction, Cuomo said it was "fortunate" that no one had been killed. "When you see the damage, it's amazing that no one was killed, to tell you the truth. We're lucky that only 29 were injured," Cuomo said Sunday on MSNBC.

Authorities have said all of these bombings in NY and NJ are related and currently have the primary suspect in custody. There is thought it could be a part of a larger group though.
