I had wanted to make a quick stop through Yellowstone on my trip but we just didn't have enough time.

You really need at least 2 weeks to fully take in all the sights out there.

Did you guys drive out there or fly out and then do some driving?

Was Yellowstone as crowded as I've heard it can get during peak tourist season?

Old Faithful, the Norris Geyser basin and the Canyon areas were a zoo.

You can see everything in Yellowstone in 4 days, Cody area can be done in 2, Grand Tetons in one. We did it and managed to hike 3-7 miles a day while we were there. There is no internet or TV if you stay in the park so you get up, eat and go. You don't have that much to distract you.

We got to Yellowstone right as school was getting out. My advice is to go in late May or early September. Mid June and the morning temps were in the 30s, May is probably colder. There was still tons of snow in the passes area. If you ever get to Cody, you need to go North out of Cody up the Dead Indian Pass area and up into Cooke Montana. It's a wonderful drive but only opens May 15 and closes on snow. There is probably some cool shit to see in the part of Montana but we didn't plan on anything.

We flew out to Salt Lake and drove from there. It's really not that bad as you're seeing sights the whole way....assuming you don't just shoot up the highway into the west side of the park. That would be a long, boring, flat drive through SE Idaho. You need to go through the Bear Lake area up into Jackson.
