California Highway Patrol selects Porsche as 2006 pursuit vehicles
ATLANTA, June 27, 2005 - The California Highway Patrol has announced today that its is standardizing on the Porsche 987 Boxster as its 2006 pursuit vehicles to replace its aging fleet of Chevrolet Camaros.

CHP spokesman Officer Bruce Nowwegotcha said that after extensive testing the Porsche Boxster was found to have all of attributes necessary for a proper pursuit vehicle. "The Boxster has 2 trunks which allows us to stash all of our police stuff" Officer Nowwegotcha was quoted as saying. "The Camaros were at the end of their useful life, and were never able to be used fully given that CHP officers are prohibited from wearing mullets while on duty" he added.

The initial order for 200 Porsche Boxsters will be completed by the end of 2005 with the majority of units being placed in service in high enforcement areas.

Porsche Cars North America spokesman Lorna Gattasped said that the CHP contract represents a new market for Porsche in the US and expects other states to watch closely the CHP purchase.

Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA), based in Atlanta, Ga., and its subsidiary, Porsche Cars Canada, Ltd., are the exclusive importers of Porsche police cars for the United States and Canada.

Silly. The CHP is an agency to Protect the California Public ; not an free enterprise to purchase expensive foreign autos no matter how fashionable. American police agencies should protect and help aid the American worker and business' by purchasing those autos built 'only' in Americas own factories. Cool is Not Cool.

    They do purchase US cars!

New CHP Cars Much Harder for Lawbreakers to Spot
The California Highway Patrol has a new tool to enforce the state's traffic laws. Officials hope that the fast and stealthy new patrol cars will help put a dent in the rising accident rate.

The CHP has acquired 60 brand new Chevrolet Camaro patrol vehicles. Painted white, with minimal markings and low profile light bars, the new cars promise to give officers the edge in finding and stopping traffic offenders.

With a top speed in excess of 160 miles per hour, the Camaros are equipped to run down practically any vehicle they encounter. However, they are initially being tasked with reducing the soaring rate of truck-related accidents.

The sleeker, stealthier vehicles were acquired after a study found that the standard black and white cruisers were too easy for lawbreakers to spot. Too often, officers found themselves spotted before they could get close enough to clock speeders or obtain other evidence for a citation.

According to officers, an added benefit of the new cars is that they're just plain fun to drive. "It's going to give the motorcycle a run for its money," said Officer Kevin Pierce.

So far, just five of the Camaros have been deployed. However, within the next few weeks, all 60 will be in service around the state.

Yep, but notice the date on that article... 2002.

GM quit making the Camaro right around then.

I suspect though, the upcoming Hemi powered Challenger will be the new high speed pursuit vehicle unless Ford makes some drastic changes (i.e. V-10 option) to the good old CVPI to give it much better performance.
