Two people were wounded in a shooting Friday at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle and one person was arrested, police said.

The extent of the victims' injuries was not immediately known. A SWAT team was searching the downtown building for any other possible victims or shooters, police spokesman Rich Pruitt said.

"People got shot, some of our co-workers," Patti Simon said in a phone interview, her voice shaking. "I just got back from Israel and made it out of there a half hour before the rockets started."

Simon, who sells advertising for the federation's newspaper, was working on the first floor when she heard screaming, shots and what sounded like furniture crashing on the floor above.

"We heard this horrible screaming on the floor above us and shots," the 52-year-old said. "We didn't know what was happening."

Simon called up to her co-workers on the second floor, but got no answer, so she called the police and fled the building.

One person shot in the abdomen and another shot in the arm were being taken to Harborview Medical Center, KING-TV reported.

Police blocked off several city blocks to investigate.

Simon said the federation building has security.
"Somebody must have lied their way in," she said.

5 Shot, 1 Fatally at Seattle Jewish Center

SEATTLE (AP) -- At least five people were shot, one of them fatally, Friday afternoon at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle, and one person was arrested, authorities said.

Five or six people were wounded, assistant police chief Jim Pugel said.

One person died, fire department spokeswoman Helen Fitzpatrick said.

One wounded woman was shot in the abdomen and another woman was hit in the arm, according to news accounts. Information on the others wounded was not immediately available.


A SWAT team searched the federation building, looking for any other victims, anyone hiding or any other possible shooters, police spokesman Rich Pruitt said.

Pruitt said he had no information on a motive. "Hopefully we can figure that out as this goes on," he said.

Police cordoned off several city blocks to investigate.

Several witnesses said they saw a man walk up and shoot a woman in the leg on a sidewalk near the building.

"We heard this horrible screaming on the floor above us and shots," Patti Simon said in a phone interview, her voice shaking. "We didn't know what was happening."

At least five people were shot - one fatally - this afternoon at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle by a man a witness said was upset about "what was going on in Israel."

Police spokesman Rich Pruitt said there was one shooter, who was apprehended without incident outside the Jewish Federation Building located on the corner of Third Avenue and Virginia Street. Pruitt said there were at least two victims on the third floor of the building.

Police got reports of shots fired shortly before 4 p.m.

Early reports were that the victims were shot in the stomach.
The alleged shooter was taken away in a patrol car after being handcuffed on the sidewalk outside the building. Pruitt could not immediately say what motive the alleged gunman had.
One witness, who declined to give her name, said a man walked into the Jewish Federation building with a gun, said he was upset about what was going on in Israel, then opened fire. After the shootings, the man said to call 911, the witness said. The witness said the man identified himself as an American Muslim.

Fighting has raged in the Middle East since Hezbollah, a Shiite militia group based in Lebanon, went into Israel and kidnapped an Israeli soldier. Israel retaliated by striking targets in Lebanon and has sent troops into the southern part of the country.

Witnesses to the afternoon shooting and people who work at the Jewish Federation described a chaotic, terrifying scene.

Kami Knatt works at the federation's Holocaust center. As he exited the building, she saw a wounded coworker fall down. Knatt took her sweater off and tried to stop the bleeding.

"I asked her 'are you OK'. She said no I've been shot. 'I kept saying it's going to be OK."


The victim told Knatt: "I'm going to black out, I'm going to black out." Knatt replied: "You're going to be alright."

Nathaniel Mullins, 43, was turning onto Lenora Street with his 19-year-old daughter when he heard police say "get back! get back!"

Mullins said he saw two shooting victims. "They were covered in blood," he said.

"We were scared, heck yeah. It shot me for a moment."

Zach Carstensen, who is the director of government relations for the Jewish Federation, said he heard shots and screams.

"People started running and I started running with them," Carstensen said.

Asked whether he thought his office had been targeted because of the conflict in the Mideast, Carstensen said he wasn't sure. "We're all a little shaken, he said.

Sam Peterson, 18, who lives in an apartment on Third and Blanchard, said she was walking to the Lenora Apartment Building and cutting through the corner of Sigs Barbershop when she heard at least one gunshot.

She saw a blonde woman "drop to the ground. She screamed."

A Harborview Hospital spokeswoman said of five victims, three were in the operating room with shotgun wounds to the abdomen, knee, groin and arm. The spokeswoman wouldn't be more specific.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle was established 1926. According to its Web site, its mission is to "ensure Jewish survival and to enhance the quality of Jewish life locally, in Israel and worldwide."

Jul 28, 2006 — SEATTLE (Reuters) - At least five women were shot, one fatally, on Friday when a gunman opened fire at a Jewish organization in downtown Seattle, authorities said.

Police said they had arrested a single suspect in the shootings, but did not immediately identify the man. Several streets in the area were cordoned off and police could be searching for another suspect, according to media reports.

"We have five victims, all female, ranging from their early 20s to 40s, who have been brought to Harbor View (Medical Center)," hospital spokeswoman Pamela Steele said.

"They have sustained wounds to the knee, groin, abdomen and arm. Three of the five have been taken to the operating room," she said.

The shooting took place at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle, which had helped organize a large rally last weekend to demonstrate support for Israel in its fight against Hizbollah.

Update Seattle terror

Here is the update.

One suspect is in custody he is a Pakistani with a criminal background.

At 1741 hours this may not be over the police just brought the SWAT team back together and has gone into a new location near the Jewish Federation.

It appears that the regional SWAT team has responded to give back up to SPD.

The Seattle Police Bomb Squad has responded as has according to the news the Alchol Tabaco and Fire Arms Bomb Squad has also responded.

28 July 2006: Investigators from the Northeast Intelligence Network are working on the news story that at least five people were shot - one fatally - at 4:03 p.m. Pacific Time (7:03 PM ET) today at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle, 2031 Third Avenue, Seattle, Washington. According to witnesses, a man appearing to be Middle Eastern - or having the physical charateristics of being Middle Eastern - said that he was upset about "what was going on in Israel" and began firing a weapon.

According to police spokesman Rich Pruitt, there was one shooter, who was apprehended without incident outside of the Jewish Federation Building.

We are receiving reports that the man has been verified to be a man of Pakistani origin; police are also looking closely at possible bobby-traps he might have set in his vehicle.

29 July 2006: 3:45 a.m. ET Update: “I Hate Israel” said alleged murder suspect Naveed Afzal Haq, 30, pictured above, to a member of the Seattle Joint Terrorism Task Force after his arrest. The task force is assisting in the investigation of Friday’s shooting spree. According to official law enforcement sources, HAQ forced his way into the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle, 2031 Third Avenue, Seattle, Washington at approximately 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Armed with a semiautomatic 9-mm handgun, HAQ shot one receptionist, then ordered her to dial 911. He then took the phone from her and told the police that it was a hostage situation and he wanted us to get our weapons out of Israel, according to a combination of witness and police accounts.

Federation employee Marla Meislin-Dietrich said security videotapes show HAQ shoving his way past another employee who had just entered a pass code to open a security door. "He was armed and he pushed his way in," she said. According to various sournces on the scene, HAQ shouted "I'm a Muslim American; I'm angry at Israel," then and began to fire randomly at the center’s employees.

According to a spokesman for Harborview Medical Center that is treating the victims, all were women ranging in age from their early 20s to 40s. Three were in critical condition and underwent surgery Friday evening. One woman, age 43, was shot in the abdomen, according to Seattle Fire Department medics. Another was 17 weeks pregnant. One woman was fatally shot at the scene.

Until a few weeks ago, HAQ lived in an apartment at 2924 Nassau Street, Everett Washington. According to another tenant of the apartment building, he abruptly left after telling the landlord that he intended to travel to Pakistan. HAQ had a recent run-in with the law. He is awaiting trial in Benton County, Washington for allegedly exposing himself in a public place in Kennewick. The case was scheduled for trial in Benton County District Court on Thursday, but was postponed. If convicted of those charges, HAQ could receive up to a year in prison.

Haq's father, Mian A. HAQ, is a founding member of the Islamic Center of Tri-Cities in Richland, Washington. His parents moved to Pasco in 2004 after living in Richland for well over ten years.

According to an investigation conducted by the Northeast Intelligence Network, HAQ might have connections to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and might have attended college in Pennsylvania sometime between 1998 and 2003. Additionally, our law enforcement sources are maintaining that HAQ was reportedly in possession of a copy Qu'ran and possessed Arabic language terrorist documents.' The shooting well planned, and HAQ might have conducted surveillance of this facility in the days before shooting.

Authorities said officers were moving to protect both synagogues and mosques around the city but there was no evidence of a broad threat. Police were protecting mosques "because there's always the concern of retaliatory crime," Kerlikowske said.

The press is reporting this as though it is provacative for pro-Israel rallies to be taking place in America, and that Jewish retaliation on Muslims is upcoming, and that this is an expected result of America's stance in the War going on with Israel and Hezzbollah. The FBI is saying that it isn't terrorism and that this guy was acting on his own (as if a single individual cannot be a terrorist). The shooting came a day after the FBI had warned Jewish organizations nationwide to be on alert after Hezbollah leaders in Lebanon and al-Qaida's second in command urged that the war raging in the Middle East be carried to the U.S. However, the law-enforcement source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said there is no evidence Haq was involved with any group.

"He said he hates Israel," said the source, who is part of the Seattle Joint Terrorism Task Force, which was called in to help investigate the shootings.

David Gomez, the assistant special agent-in-charge of the Seattle FBI office, said there is "nothing to indicate he is part of a larger organization."

"We believe he is a lone individual with antagonism toward this organization," said Gomez.

At a rally Friday evening at Westlake Park protesting Israeli actions in Lebanon, Ziyad Zaitoun, 52, a civil engineer, said the act was a single violent individual.



"It doesn't matter if he is Jewish, Christian or Muslim — he's a nutcase. He's a loser," Zaitoun said. "He shot a human being, and it doesn't matter his personal or political agenda, he shot innocent people."

But "any time something like this happens — especially against the state of Israel or people connected to the state of Israel — we fear for our lives" as Muslims, Zaitoun said.

He said another person at the rally advised him to go home for fear of backlash.

Yousef Shehadeb, 46, a member of the Islamic Center of the Tri-Cities, recalled Haq as quiet and something of a loner. Shehadeb said he and Haq's father, Mian Haq, both work at the Hanford nuclear reservation, as do many members of the area's Muslim community.

29 July 2006; UPDATED 11:30 p.m. ET: Initial efforts to describe the shooting at a Seattle Jewish Center as a random act of violence by a chemically imbalanced man without any association to organized Islam are beginning to fall apart. As initially reported by the Northeast Intelligence Network, the Muslim man who shot six women, one fatally, at a Jewish Center Friday afternoon appeared to have planned the shooting well before the incident.

The suspect, Naveed Afzal HAQ, 30, obtained the two handguns and spare ammunition he used in the shooting just days earlier, and reportedly used his computer and the Internet to identify his target and the area. According to a law enforcement source close to this investigation and speaking exclusively to this agency on the condition of anonymity, there also appears to be some evidence to suggest that the suspect conducted physical surveillance of the building prior to the shooting, although this source declined to be more specific to avoid compromising the case for the prosecution.

Police report that shortly after 4:00 p.m. on Friday, HAQ hid behind a potted plant in a Jewish charity's foyer and forced his way through a security door by holding a gun to a 13-year-old girl's head. Once inside the center, HAQ began to randomly fire his weapons at the various women inside the building, killing one woman at the scene and wounding five others. The dead woman was identified as Pam WAECHTER, 58, of Seattle.

Statement of Probable Cause

According to the statement of probable cause filed with the King County court, HAQ told a 911 dispatcher:

"These are Jews and I'm tired of getting pushed around and our people getting pushed around by the situation in the Middle East."

While talking with the 911 operators, he identified himself by name and said:

"This is a hostage situation and I wanted these Jews to get out…" During the same conversation, HAQ he told the dispatcher he wanted police to call the media and that he had a gun pointed at a woman's head. He said he was acting alone and had not been drinking. Based on the information provided to the Northeast Intelligence Network, HAQ “sounded lucid and coherent” during the incident and well afterward, during the post-arrest interviews and interrogations.
HAQ was ordered held on $50 million bail today, pending formal charges of murder and attempted murder.

The suspect’s father, Mian A. HAQ of Pascoe is a founding member of the Islamic Center of Tri-Cities in Richland, Washington. His parents moved to Pasco in 2004 after living in Richland for well over ten years.

News Media and FBI refuse to call Seattle attack on Jewish Center terrorism

REGARDING MUSLIM GUNMAN SHOOTING UP SEATTLE JEWISH CENTER, KILLING ONE WOMAN AND WOUNDING FIVE OTHERS.

Another valient warrior of Islam! Attacking unarmed American women.

But worse than the act of terrorism itself is how the FBI and media tried to downplay the gunman's Muslim background, and even his shouted rants against Israel and Jews.

BEGIN: Once again, the media and federal officials have tried to cover up or downplay a Muslim terrorist attack in the United States.

I’m referring to the Muslim who forced his way into a Jewish center in Seattle on Friday and shot six women, killing one of them, as he screamed his anger over Israeli policies in the Middle East.

How did the Washington Post headline the story on Saturday: “Gunman Kills Woman at Seattle Jewish Center “

Nowhere in the story did the story identify the man as Muslim, if it noted his comments. The New York Times wasn’t much better, and of course, the FBI rushed to deny it was a terrorist attack.

“’We believe at this point that it’s just a lone individual acting out some kind of antagonism toward this particular organization,’ said David Gomez, the Federal Bureau of Investigation agent who heads its counterterrorism unit in Seattle,” the Washington Post story said.

What an idiot! He’s trying to make us believe that this assassin had some gripes against this Jewish center in particular, such as a disgruntled worker, rather than being clearly an anti-Semitic attack.

This is the same FBI who made the same statements several years ago when an Egyptian walked into the departure terminal at Los Angeles Airport, strolled over to Israel’s El Al Airlines desk and began shooting everyone in line, again ranting anti-Semitic chants.

Fortunately, an Israeli security agent was acting as a check-in official and pulled out his pistol to kill the gunman. I believe six months later the FBI finally gave up and admitted it was classified as a terrorist crime.

By Sunday, the story was getting more play, but was being labeled a “hate crime” possibility by the FBI.

U.S. officials apparently do not view the audio and video announcements of Osama Bin Laden and his Egyptian sidekick. They constantly call on Muslims around the world to undertake on their own initiative slaughters of Jews and Americans.

The FBI failed to declare that undoubtedly troubled 17-year-old American in Florida who stole a small plane and slammed it into a city’s tallest tower, killing only himself. He had been muttering admiration for Mohammed Ata and his fellow killers in the weeks leading up to his suicide.

And don’t forget John Muhammed, the lead sniper who terrorized the Washington D.C. region back in 2003. He definitely filled the head of his teenage accomplice with anti-Semitic filth and diatribes against American support of Israel. His lunatic dream was to use the sniper attacks to wring a huge ransom that would allow him to set up a camp in Canada “for troubled youth.” I can just imagine the ideology he would have instilled in them. I’m sure they would all be praying towards Mecca soon enough.

The Democrats have succeeded in getting many Americans to act as European ostriches, sticking their heads deep underground and thinking they are safe from attack.

Europe, except for the UK, is probably already lost to Islam. The Spanish people blamed the Bush administration for the Muslim attack on their Madrid subway and bus system that killed some 200 people. Muslims succeeded in killing nearly as many the next year in attacking London trains, and again, many Brits blamed Prime Minister Blair and George Bush. We have had two Muslim terrorist bombings in Bali that killed hundreds of Westerners, mainly Australians. Islamic radicals last month bombed the Bombay, India rail system, killing another 200 people.

There is a French documentary filmmaker who is trying to find American distribution for his movie on the Arab relentless drive to destroy Israel, named, “From the River to the Sea.” The French may yet find themselves, but it would involve throwing out the entire ruling class. Unfortunately, an unsavory racist rabble-rouser founded the strongest French nationalist party. French folks are naturally reluctant to vote for the fellow, even though he forced Jacques Chirac into a run-off election in the last presidential vote, only to lose badly.

It is truly a world war, but Americans remain as complacent as they did in the days before Pearl Harbor. Let me warn you that Al Queda is planning several spectacular attacks against us, and one of those might succeed one day.

Isn’t it strange that I’ve never seen an American of Arab descent defend Israel or U.S. policies towards Israel in the U.S. media? Never.

I’ve seen many American Jews denouncing U.S. policies in the Middle East, including those that favor Israeli retention of some West Bank land to have a viable state.

RICHLAND -- Naveed Haq, now widely portrayed as a Muslim American so angry at Israel that he shot up a Jewish charity in Seattle, had recently converted to Christianity. His conversion is perhaps the most startling contradiction in a puzzling life.

He had a degree in electrical engineering and was the son of a successful engineer. But he couldn't hold a job and recently worked as a security guard and retail clerk in the Seattle area.

His father was a founding member of the Islamic center here. But the son was rarely seen at a local mosque for more than 10 years.

Haq, 30, told a ministry leader that he saw too much anger in Islam and wanted to find a new beginning in Christianity. He converted to Christianity, but, as with many other endeavors in his life, drifted away from the faith.

Acquaintances said he never seemed to be the fanatic religious extremist he played out on Friday. Instead some think his anger was really the result of problems in his personal and professional life.

"Naveed had the profile of the guy who just couldn't get things together," said Erik Neilsen, a Richland resident who let Haq live with him for three months in 2004. Neilsen said he thinks several problems compounded for Haq, and he just exploded.

"I wish I could have done something about it. I look back in retrospect and say 'Is there anything I could have done?' "

Funny how the words "American" came first in his statement. He should take a lesson in that, as should all the other fools that "hypenate" their heritage.

In America, if you're a citizen, you're an AMERICAN FIRST. Before you're anything else. That goes for everyone. This "Afro-American", "Spanish-American" crap needs to go. You're an AMERICAN if you live here.

I have Irish, Scotish and English heritage. I have some American indian blood. Not a lot, but some. My family has been in this country before it was called "The United States of America".

I don't go around calling myself "Irish-American" or whatever. I think these fools need to wake up. You're either an American, or you're not. I don't know many people running around calling themselves "Christian-Americans" either....

They can be both. But they don't stand there and make cracks about being one over the other. Oh, some do say "I'm a Christian first" -- which is fine, but I dont see them shooting people either.
