    11 Egyptian exchange students missing

MARK SHERMAN - Associated Press Writer - 08/08/2006

WASHINGTON — Eleven Egyptian students who arrived in the United States last month are being sought by authorities after failing to turn up for an exchange program at Montana State University.

The Egyptian men were among a group of 17 students who arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York from Cairo on July 29 with valid visas, according to U.S. authorities and university officials.

The other six have arrived at the Bozeman, Mont., campus for a monthlong program on English language instruction and U.S. history and culture, university spokeswoman Cathy Conover said.

When the 11 didn’t turn up by the end of the last week, the FBI issued a lookout to state and local law enforcement, said FBI Special Agent Richard Kolko.

‘‘At this point all they have done is not show up for a scheduled academic program,’’ Kolko said. ‘‘There is no threat associated with these men.’’

They are between 18 and 22 years old, said a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the search for the men is continuing.

U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement declined to make their names public.

The government probably will seek to send the students home once they are located because they have violated the terms of their visas, the official said.

The government tightened the student visa process after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks when it learned that four of the hijackers entered the country on foreign student visas.

The school has tried repeatedly to contact the students, Conover said, including sending e-mails. When that failed, the school notified Homeland Security officials and registered the Egyptians as ‘‘no-shows’’ in the system developed after Sept. 11 to track foreign students, Conover said.

They were participating in an exchange program Montana State arranged with Mansoura University in Mansoura, Egypt.

‘‘We hope this doesn’t cast doubt on this program because we think it’s important to have international students on our campus and in our community,’’ Conover said.

2 more students reportedly picked up in New Jersey

One of 11 missing Egyptian students has been picked up in Minneapolis, Minn., NBC News’ Pete Williams reported and the FBI confirmed Wednesday.
Local police in New Jersey also believe they have apprehended two more of the Egyptian students. Federal agents, however, have not yet confirmed the identities of these students.

Eslam Ibrahim Mohamed El-Dessouki, 21, was arrested "without incident" by FBI and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, FBI Special Agent Richard Kolko said.

El-Dessouki is being held on an administrative immigration violation because he did not turn up for his monthlong exchange program at Montana State University, Kolko said.

The missing students pose no terrorism threat, Kolko said. Minneapolis FBI spokesman Paul McCabe said the FBI remains "extremely interested" in interviewing the 10 other Egyptian students.

The missing students were among a group of 17 Egyptians who arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York from Cairo on July 29 with valid visas, according to U.S. authorities and university officials.
The other six arrived at the Bozeman, Mont., campus for a program on English language instruction and U.S. history and culture, university spokeswoman Cathy Conover said.

NBC News’ Pete Williams and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Interesting. They hit the ground and immediately dispersed.

They likely had connecting flights as well. The poor saps on those planes had to wait for the luggage to be de-planed.

El Sayed Ahmed Elsayed Ibrahim, 20, and Alaa Abd El Fattah Ali El Bahnasawi, 20, were arrested at a residence in Dundalk, Md., outside Baltimore, by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
Chicago police detained Ahmed Mohamed Mohamed Abou El Ela, 22, at OHare International Airport as he was attempting to book a flight to Montana, the FBI said. Immigration agents later took El Ela into custody.
All are being held on administrative immigration violations because they did not report on time to their monthlong program at Montana State University in Bozeman, Mont.
None of the students is considered a terrorism risk and FBI officials stressed that there are no ties between the Egyptians and the alleged terror plot broken up by British authorities.
Three students were arrested Wednesday. The other five Egyptians still are being sought.

Agents Arrest 3 Exchange Students In Des Moines

    School Says Students Were No-Shows

    POSTED: 4:59 pm CDT August 12, 2006
    UPDATED: 8:45 am CDT August 13, 2006

WASHINGTON -- Immigration officials have now picked up all but two of the 11 Egyptian exchange students who came to the U.S. for a summer course in Montana but never showed up for classes.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents tracked three of the students to Des Moines. They were arrested at about 8 p.m. Friday, and are being held in the Polk County Jail.

They will be here until a federal immigration judge decides if they will face charges or be deported.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents won't say what led them to find these students in Des Moines or where they were staying. The students are Ahmed Laket, 19, Mohamed Moghazy, 20, and 18-year-old Moustafa Gafary. Agents are not releasing their pictures

Others were picked up earlier in New Jersey, Maryland, Chicago and Minnesota. They were part of a group of 17 who arrived in New York July 29 en route to a month-long program at Montana State University in Bozeman. Six reported on time, but the 11 others were no-shows.

Immigration officials said the students are not considered a terrorism risk, but all the no-shows now face deportation.

Montana State contacted Homeland Security officials after repeatedly trying to contact the missing students, under procedures put into place after Sept. 11, 2001, to track foreign students.

The last two of the 11 Egyptian exchange students who failed to show up at their college program were apprehended Sunday in Richmond, Va., customs officials said.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Mohamed Saleh Ahmed Maray, 20, and Mohamed Ibrahim Fouaad El Shenawy, 17, at an apartment building in Richmond on Sunday night. Virginia State Police and the Richmond Police helped locate the students.

Last Wednesday, one of the Egyptian students was arrested in Minneapolis and two were detained in Manville, N.J. On Thursday, two were arrested in Dundalk, Md., and one was arrested at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago. Three more were arrested Friday in Des Moines, Iowa.

The students were to attend a monthlong program at Montana State University in Bozeman, Mont. A group of 17 students arrived in New York on July 29. Six reported to Bozeman on time.

After Montana State repeatedly tried to contact the missing students, it notified Homeland Security Department officials and registered the Egyptians as no-shows in a system to track foreign students developed after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

None of the students is considered a terrorism risk.

Hold on, there's something SERIOUSLY wrong here.

Sunday, I saw the news. They showed the locations on the map where they picked these guys up, along with the caveat, "The Department of Homeland security says these folks are not terrorism related".

They were scattered all OVER the midwest and East coast.

That's BULLSHIT and I'm calling FOUL on the DHS on this one.
