Ohio car dealership blasted for jihad ad

COLUMBUS, Ohio - A car dealership's planned radio advertisement that declared "a jihad on the automotive market" has drawn sharp criticism for its content but will not be changed, the business said Saturday.

Several stations rejected the Dennis Mitsubishi spot, which says sales representatives wearing "burqas" â€” head-to-toe traditional dress for Islamic women â€” will sell vehicles that can "comfortably seat 12 jihadists in the back."

"Our prices are lower than the evildoers' every day. Just ask the pope!" the ad says. "Friday is fatwa Friday, with free rubber swords for the kiddies." A fatwa is a religious edict.

Dealership president Keith Dennis said the ad does not disrespect any religion or culture. He said it was "fair game" to poke "a little fun at radical extremists."

"It was our intention to craft something around some of the buzzwords of the day and give everyone a good chuckle and be a little bit of a tension reliever," he said.

The Columbus chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations decried the ad as disrespectful.

"Using that as a promotional pitch when so many are dying from the criminal activity of suicide bombers, that's not funny," chapter president Asma Mobin-Uddin said. "I don't think it's appropriate when it causes real pain. It exploits or promotes misunderstanding in terms already misunderstood or misused."

The ad, written and produced by the company, will begin airing next week, although he was uncertain of which radio stations had accepted the spot, Dennis said.

Greetings in our Lord, michael, and welcome.

You raise a good point. Making fun of religion happens all the time in TV shows, with the exception of Islam. Seeing that somebody has the guts to poke fun at the extremist version of Islam in advertising is telling in that Americans are beginning to see the truth and say something. Humor being used in the advertising, it seems to me, is a way of saying something against this ideology while not being too offensive. In not caving into CAIR, nor in justifying changing the ad due to loss of airtime at some stations because of their refusal to carry the ad, Keith Dennis champions freedom of speech and gives the finger to the left.

Of course, it definately is an offensive ad to those who are followers of Islam. Considering that Judaism and Christianity are degraded and made to look hypocritical for sport, the very real jihad element w/in Islam that took the innocent lives of about 3000 people on 9/11 certainly is game. Is there any other religion so deserving of being branded for violence, torture, and death? I enjoy a great commercial. This one is sure to be a keeper.

Amen. And don't worry, they won't ask you to join them. Nor will they take a stand for what they believe are Moslem women's rights as you seem to suggest. Leftists like this are interested in their own agenda, but not at the cost of their own lives. lol Though they may join with others who do all the difficult and dangerous work.

An official with Dennis Mitsubishi in Columbus, Ohio, told CAIR-Ohio that the dealership has issued an apology for any misunderstanding caused by "an attempt at humor that fell short."
In a statement, Dennis Mitsubishi owner Keith Dennis said his company ultimately decided not to air the spots:
"The public reaction to this story has been significant. A large number of people have contacted us. Lots of them have seen the humor we were trying to convey, but far too many were clearly bothered by it. This was simply an attempt at humor that fell short. I wish to offer my sincere apology to anyone who was offended. We do not wish to alienate anyone in our community -- all of whom are potential customers."
"We appreciate the dealership's constructive reaction to feedback about the proposed advertisements," said Adnan Mirza, director of CAIR-Ohio's Columbus office. "We accept the apology from Mr. Dennis and hope that it and the decision not to air the spots will bring this incident to a close."

I don't know, I think this kind of thing could just as easily be done against any other religion. Islam is terrible but it's easy to pick on here because it's also unpopular and unfavored. Try this thing against another religion and see what a crapstorm would result.
