Default Dozens of Dead Birds: Austin Tx

A strange discovery this morning in downtown Austin. (TX)
    KLBJ News ^ | 1/8/2007 | n/a

Several blocks of Congress Ave are closed as police investigate the death of dozens and dozens of birds lying in the street.

KLBJ spoke to the APD's Toni Shovenitz, She says they are speculating it is some type of posioning.

Right now police are using leaf-blowers to clean the road. They hope re-open this area before rush hour traffic.

Dead birds prompt Austin downtown shutdown

    http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/01/08/austin.birds.ap/

    POSTED: 10:22 a.m. EST, January 8, 2007

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Police shut down 10 blocks of businesses in the heart of downtown Austin early Monday after dozens birds were found dead.

Experts were testing for any sort of environmental contaminant or gas or chlorine leaks that might have killed off the animals, police spokeswoman Toni Chovanetz said.

There were no reports of any humans harmed, but a 10-block stretch of the main north-south route through downtown, several side streets and all buildings in the area were blocked off and expected to remain off-limits until about noon, Chovanetz said.

The bird carcasses were found overnight along Congress Avenue between Sixth and Eighth streets.

The street closure Monday morning stretched from the front of the state Capitol to a section of the Colorado River known as Town Lake. The Capitol opened on schedule Monday, the day before the legislative session was to begin.

Austin's Downtown closed after dead birds found (7:34 a.m.)

Article Launched: 01/08/2007 07:33:38 AM MST

AUSTIN (AP) Police closed a 10-block stretch of Congress Avenue in the heart of downtown Austin early Monday so officials could conduct environmental tests after several dozen birds were found dead. The carcasses were found overnight along Congress between Sixth and Eighth streets. There were no reports of humans harmed.

Police closed the main north-south route through downtown and all side streets for a block to the east and west while crews tested for environmental contaminants or gas or chlorine leaks, Austin Police spokeswoman Toni Chovanetz said.

The closure extended from 11th Street, which runs in front of the Capitol, 10 blocks south to Cesar Chavez Street at the north end of the Congress Avenue bridge over Town Lake. There was no immediate word whether the Capitol would be affected Monday, the day before the 80th legislative session was to begin.

The area and all buildings and offices within it were expected to remain off-limits until about noon Monday, she said.

Discovery of dozens of dead birds close downtown Austin

09:30 AM CST on Monday, January 8, 2007

Associated Press Click to watch video

AUSTIN, Texas -- Austin police have a troubling mystery on their hands.
They’ve closed off most of Congress Avenue for the morning downtown — along with all side streets between Colorado and Brazos streets. That’s after dozens of birds were found dead in the area.

The several dozen dead birds were found along Congress between Sixth and Eighth streets overnight. Congress Avenue is closed from Cesar Chavez on the south to 11th Street on the north in front of the Capitol.

A police spokeswoman says the area is expected to remain closed until about noon.

People who work in the closed-off area have been advised to delay coming to work until after fire crews conduct precautionary testing of the area and declare an all-clear.

Health Dept.: No Public Health Threat Despite Large Number Of Dead Birds

    Jan 8, 2007 10:07 AM

The health department doesn't believe that the dozens of dead birds found in Downtown Austin Monday morning are a threat to public health. But several blocks of Congress Avenue remain closed off to traffic, and if you work in the area, you're being asked to stay home from work until at least noon.

"At this time, based on that preliminary evidence, we do not feel that there's a threat to the public health, but we do want to take every precaution necessary to ensure the public's safety," said Dr. Adolfo Valadez with Austin-Travis County Health and Human Services.

Congress Avenue and one block on either side of the street is shut down from Cesar Chavez to 11th Street until approximately noon. Most of the birds were concentrated around 9th Street.

They still don't know what killed the birds. However, one bird has been sent to a lab in Ames, Iowa, to be tested for avian flu. Another bird is being sent to College Station, Texas, to determine whether it might have been poisoned. That said, KXAN has been told that officials don't believe that a bird flu was the likely cause of this incident Monday morning.

"Typically what we see in large bird die-offs is severe weather, actually -- strong winds, hail storms," Valadez said. "Obviously, poisoning can be a cause of that, deliberate poisoning from people finding birds a nuisance. And then other times, birds, just like people, can become ill and get certain diseases that can cause them to die. West Nile virus is probably the most common cause."

The dead birds included grackles, pigeons and sparrows.

The fire department was called out to the area around 3 a.m. on Monday to test if there had been a gas or chlorine leak, but nothing of that nature was found. However, further precautionary testing is ongoing, and fire officials are requesting that individuals that work in this area not to come in until further notice.

"What the police department has done at this time is shut down Congress [Avenue] at First/Cesar Chavez, as well as one block on either side. We are asking people that work in the area not to come in, because they are not allowed in the area," said Toni Chovanetz with the Austin Police Department.

Several different groups are on the scene, including APD, AFD and the 6th Civil Support Team. That team supports local first-responders and helps determine the nature of an emergency situation.

AUSTIN, Texas - Police shut down 10 blocks in downtown Austin for several hours Monday after 63 birds were found dead in the street, but officials said preliminary tests found no threat to people.

Workers in yellow hazardous-materials suits tested for contaminants in a cordoned-off section near the state Capitol and the governor’s mansion before authorities finally gave the all-clear in the afternoon.

Although officials could not immediately determine whether poison or something else killed the birds, “there’s no threat to humans at this point,” said Assistant City Manager Michael McDonald.

The dead grackles, sparrows and pigeons will be tested.

Some experts said the most likely cause of the die-off was a deliberate poisoning. “It happens quite frequently,” said Greg Butcher, director of bird conservation at the National Audubon Society in Washington.

Grackles are a crowlike bird regarded as a major pest in Texas, with Austin sidewalks sometimes covered in their droppings.

The dead birds were found overnight along Congress Avenue, a major downtown thoroughfare. Police closed the route through downtown and two side streets, and a staging area was set up near the Capitol, with dozens of fire trucks, police cars and ambulances.

The Capitol opened on schedule, however, and the governor was not asked to leave the mansion.

Dr. Adolfo Valadez, medical director for the Austin and Travis County Health and Human Services Division, said the birds will be tested for signs of poison or viral infections. But officials do not believe bird flu is involved.

It could be days or weeks before a cause is determined, he said.

The warning was lifted a little more than an hour later after emergency crews contained the leak of the colorless liquid, which has an amomonia-like odor and can cause skin and nasal irritation, and possible damage to the kidneys and liver.

The Austin street closures were not the only public health concern in Texas on Monday. In the Houston suburb of Sugar Land, authorities asked people to stay indoors with windows closed after a chemical release at an industrial plant. Ethylenediamine was released into the air while a tanker truck was unloading at a division of Nalco Co.

Three employees were sent to a hospital and about a dozen others were treated on the scene.

On the East Coast, New York City also had a scare Monday when a mysterious gas odor moved across Manhattan. It wasn’t immediately clear what had caused the odor, and it dissipated fairly quickly. No injuries or damage to wildlife was immediately reported.

I have been seeing these various reports and mass animal deaths lately and found on Drudge a section with various stories. In addition a Google map with news links:

    http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UT...bca25af104a22b

It is a little concerning as the Arkansas bird deaths are stated as "blunt force trauma" and the Sweden bird deaths are stated as from "external blows". What? If true, what can be in the air and be a blunt force in a mile sq area.

So what gives? Not looking for "The Illuminati did it" or "it was Bush", but what actual mechanism causes this of late.

The map is a compilation of the events of late and i urge a look at it.

Swedish bird mystery: Deaths due to 'external injuries'

Rescue officials found almost 100 birds on the street in Falkoeping
Continue reading the main story Related stories

Officials investigating the mysterious deaths of up to 100 birds on a road in Sweden say tests have revealed they suffered external injuries.
Dozens of jackdaws were found in the centre of Falkoeping prompting comparisons with the mysterious deaths of 3,000 birds in the US.
Sweden's National Veterinary Institute said it had tested five of the birds and found evidence of traumatic injury.
But it could not explain why the birds were on the street.
Professor Marianne Elvander, the institute's head of disease control and epidemiology, told the BBC News website that they appeared to have been hit by some kind of blunt instrument.
"My best guess is that this was the secondary effect, that they could have hit the ground very fast after being hit by a car or truck," she said.

Swedish media have described how Falkoeping resident Drilon Hulaj came across "hundreds of dead birds" lying in the street while driving home on Tuesday night.
Mr Hulaj said he had been immediately reminded of the events in Arkansas where 3,000 red-winged blackbirds died mysteriously on New Year's Eve in the town of Beebe. Scientists there believe the blackbirds may have been affected by fireworks.
There have been no reports of fireworks or storms in Falkoeping on Tuesday night and fireworks has been ruled by vet officers, who say there is no sign of internal haemorrhaging.
But Swedish newspapers have suggested that the birds had been pecking at salt on the road when they were run over by a passing lorry.
Rescue chief Christer Olofsson told Aftonbladet that a lorry driver had called him to explain that he had hit a lot of the birds but had not considered it significant until he discovered the story had attracted international media attention.
While the lorry may go some way to solving the Swedish mystery, vet officers have pointed out that many of the birds were not run over.

Mass bird and fish deaths stoke curiosity

By Kerry Sheridan (AFP) – 2 hours ago

WASHINGTON — Five thousand dead blackbirds rained from the sky on the first day of the New Year in Arkansas. Then more dead birds fell in other states. Then huge fish kills were discovered in multiple US waterways.

And suddenly it became a worldwide phenomenon, with reports of mass die-offs of birds and fish in Sweden, Britain, Japan, Thailand, Brazil and beyond.

Doves, jellyfish, snapper, jackdaws... it seemed no species was immune.

Conspiracy theorists, doomsdayers and religious extremists warned that the end was nigh.

Could it be astronauts testing a potent sound beam to ward off aliens? The US military experimenting with satellite-powered energy weapons?

What about chemical sprays, meteor showers, or earthquakes activating pollutants from the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico?

"Birds" surged to the most searched term on The New York Times website.

Religious bloggers loaded their sites with Bible verse, Hosea 4:1-3: "The land dries up, and all who live in it waste away; the beasts of the field, the birds in the sky and the fish in the sea are swept away."

But as speculation roiled the blogosphere, wildlife experts rolled their eyes.

"It is not that unusual," said Kristen Schuler, scientist at the US Geological Survey's National Wildlife Center.

"There is nothing apocalyptic or anything that is necessarily out of the ordinary for what we would see in any given week."

Regarding the bird deaths in Arkansas, where the local custom is to set off fireworks to mark New Year's Eve, officials determined it was likely that the noise set off a deadly bird panic.

"It appears unusually loud noises, reported shortly before the birds began to fall, caused the birds to flush from a roost," the USGS National Wildlife Health Center said in a statement posted on the Arkansas Fish and Game Commission website.

"Additional fireworks in the area may have forced the birds to fly at a lower altitude than normal and hit houses, vehicles, trees and other objects. Blackbirds have poor night vision and typically do not fly at night."

In Louisiana, Schuler said it looked like cold weather might have killed off about 500 birds.

Meanwhile in Maryland, locals were spooked by reports of some two million dead fish in the Chesapeake Bay.

But officials were quick to assuage those concerns, saying the deaths were a result of an unusual cold snap, combined with an overpopulation of a species known as spot fish.

"Natural causes appear to be the reason for the deaths of the fish," said a statement by the Maryland Department of the Environment.

"Spot may have difficulty surviving in colder temperatures, and the species? susceptibility to winter kills is well-documented," it said, noting that surface water temperatures last month were the coldest in 25 years.

As for the bird and fish deaths elsewhere in the world, many were still under investigation.

According to the National Wildlife Federation's Doug Inkley, the most frequent cause of mass death in birds is disease, though pollution and "just plain accidents" can also trigger large scale die-offs. Often, people just are not aware of them.

"Most of the time these areas are not near human habitation such as in forests or in the woods," he said on CNN.

But in today's Internet Age, when hardly anything remains secret, word of unusual bird deaths has spread with unparalleled speed.

"In 1960 if a bunch of birds started falling from the sky it may have been noticed by some people. It may have gotten reported in the local paper, but it may never have gotten any further than that," said Robert Thompson, professor of pop culture at Syracuse University.

"Now some of these kinds of stories, because they get out there on the Internet, if they are compelling enough they can immediately make this jump to national news," he said.

"Let's face it, big quantities of birds falling from the sky or fish going belly up is a pretty compelling story."

I would say... to "watch it" when it comes to this situation.

Just because we're suddenly seeing a spate of these incidents doesn't mean they aren't NORMAL and don't happen all the time but are rarely reported.

See my message about "Vaccines" in the Skeptics corner.

Just because this is happening doesn't mean it's something weird, or there really are space craft flying around invisibly with force fields the birds are running into.

Keep an eye on this, it will "go away". Watch and see.

After thousands of dead blackbirds dropped from the sky over central Arkansas on New Years Eve, reports of mysterious animal deaths began coming in from around the world. Our Melissa Bell asked if this was the beginning of the Aflockalypse?

Dozens dead in Sweden, hundreds washed ashore in New Zealand. Is the world witnessing the end of days or is this just a case of coincidence fueled by wild speculation?
Ever since residents of Beebe, Ark., woke up on New Year's Day to thousands of blackbirds that had dropped mysteriously from the sky, other sudden animal deaths have been reported furiously around the world. In a nearby Arkansas town, thousands of fish washed ashore on Monday. On Tuesday, another 500 blackbirds were found dead in Baton Rouge, La.
Then the story went international. Sweden reported dozens of birds falling out of the sky and New Zealand reported hundreds of dead snapper washing ashore. The Chesapeake Bay has 2 million fish estimated dead.
Does this mean the Christian group spreading the word that the end is nigh -- very, very nigh -- is correct? The group's date for Judgment Day: May 21, 2011.
(VIDEO: Bizarre bird mystery puzzles Arkansas officials)
With conspiracy theorists hard at work explaining these deaths, BlogPost mapped the incoming reports and explained some of the most compelling theories here:

I scoffed yesterday at the rash of dead animals turning up all over the world, blaming the media (guilty!) for focusing too much attention on the phenomenon. I thought I'd ask the readers what they thought was the cause of all the deaths. Their answers ranged from "CIA death ray," to "I don't think it's God; I know it is," and from "It's the internet -- now we get all info from all over the world: toomuchinformationdysmorphia" to "Everything is connected from ocean currents and rivers to migration routes. Birds migrate. Birds eat little fish, etc. Ocean currents carry contaminates to every part of the globe. My theory is this is all connected to the oil spill."
The reports of bird deaths have not subsided, and on Wednesday hundreds more dead birds were found in Kentucky, as AP reported:

Kentucky wildlife officials say several hundred dead birds were found dead in the western part of the state. The grackles, red wing blackbirds, robins and starlings were found last week.
New Year's Eve fireworks have been blamed for the deaths of thousands of blackbirds in central Arkansas. Another 450 birds died this week in Louisiana, likely after hitting power lines or cars.
Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources spokesman Mark Marraccini says someone called police about the discovery in Kentucky, and they alerted state officials.

Rick, recall the Hartville incident back in about 2001? The town that had the birds burnt and was near a never finished nuclear plant? It was what I recalled for odd deaths of birds.

I pretty much didn't care about this story until I read something weird. In the comments section after a completely different news story not related to the dead birds, this guy was going off about John Wheeler, the former Reagan and Bush guy that was found dead in the garbage dump, saying his death was connected to the dead birds and Iraqi WMD's. I did a little digging and found this crazy article that laid it all out. It's complete bullshit, but I'll try and repost that article.

Ok, here's the deal. I can't find the original article but I think I found a reprint of it somewhere else. In addition, while searching for the original I have found numerous articles about this that weren't there yesterday. This conspiracy theory seems to really be taking off. Like I said, I thinks its complete bullshit.

UPDATE! Birds and Fish are now Dying all Around the World
A shocking report prepared for Prime Minister Putin by the Foreign Military Intelligence Directorate (GRU) states that one of the United States top experts in biological and chemical weapons was brutally murdered after he threatened to expose a US Military test of poison gas that killed hundreds of thousands of animals in Arkansas this past week.
According to this report, John P. Wheeler III, Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Air Force, Washington, D.C. from 2005-2008, when he became the Special Assistant to the Acting Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Installations, Logistics and Environment, was found brutally murdered and dumped in a landfill, and as we can read as reported by Fox News:
“Delaware Police are investigating the apparent murder of a former Bush official who also championed the fund-raising effort to build the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the Mall in Washington, D.C. Wheeler’s body was found in Wilmington on Friday.
According to police, somebody initially reported that the body was dumped out of a refuse truck, which would have been coming from Newark, onto the landfill. Newark Police spokesman Lt. Mark Farrall told Fox News that nobody had reported Wheeler missing before he was found.
The Wilmington News Journal reported that Wheeler was last seen riding an Amtrak train from Washington to Wilmington, Del., last Tuesday.”

Wheeler’s military career included writing one of the most important manuals on the effectiveness of biological and chemical weapons which led to his being hired in 2009 as a consultant to the Mitre Corporation, whose aviation system development department, the GRU reports, is at the forefront of creating the computer command and control systems used by the US Air Force in their fleet of aerial spraying planes.
These aerial spraying planes, this report continues, are based at the Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas that over the past few months have been involved with ‘test dispersants’ of poisonous gasses in the Afghanistan War Theater using chemical weapons stocks obtained from Iraq and held at the Pine Bluff Arsenal, also located in Arkansas.
Important to note about the Pine Bluff Arsenal, which calls itself “America’s Arsenal”, is that it is one of the World’s most specialized munitions and chemical-biological defense products and services bases which Russia had previously accused of not fully reporting the chemical agents removed from Iraq, between 2003 and 2008, and taken to the US for testing and subsequent destruction.
According to this report, the US relocated from Iraq to the Pine Bluff Arsenal an estimated 63,000 metric tonnes of the poisonous gas Phosgene that is described as one of the most feared chemical weapons ever used due to its ability to literally cause the lungs and respiratory system to explode.
Nearly immediately after Russia accused the US this past summer of not fully destroying Iraq’s Phosgene poisonous gas stockpile the Pine Bluff Arsenal began an ‘accelerated’ disposal programme injecting it deep into the ground in central Arkansas, but which, unfortunately, since this past September, has caused over 500 minor earthquakes to occur raising the concerns of their local population.
More frightening, however, is the claim made in this report that the Americans have also begun shipping ‘massive quantities’ of Iraq’s Phosgene poisonous gas stocks to Afghanistan where when used they will be able to say they had nothing to do with it, and believe no one will be able to prove it either.
Important to note about Iraq’s Phosgene poisonous gas stocks are that they are no longer able to be made by any Western country, including the United States, which makes its value as a Weapon of Mass Destruction (WMD) incalculable, especially in a war situation like Afghanistan where the enemy forces are firmly entrenched in hostile terrain.
To the direct reason for Wheeler’s murder, this report says, was this past week’s transport of Iraqi Phosgene poisonous gas aboard a US Air Force KC-767 tanker aircraft from Little Rock Air Force Base enroute to Afghanistan that shortly after takeoff had a ‘critical malfunction’ of its aerial spraying computer directed command and control system over central Arkansas causing the deaths of thousands of red-wing blackbirds.
According to US reports an estimated 4,000 of these birds were killed outright and were quickly removed by US Environmental Services workers wearing hazmat suits and gas masks. Another US report states that cause of death to these thousands of birds was “trauma in the breast tissue, with blood clots in the body cavity and a lot of internal bleeding” which this GRU report states is consistent with Phosgene exposure.
Even more chilling than this incident is this GRU report stating that it was the second “accidental” release of Phosgene poisonous gas in as many days, as the day before, this same US Air Force KC-767 tanker aircraft also had a “critical malfunction” causing a release over the Arkansas River that killed over 100,000 fish.
Upon Wheeler discovering what was happening with Iraq’s Phosgene poisonous gas stockpiles, this report continues, he traveled from his home in Delaware to Washington D.C. where he openly confronted and threatened to expose the Pentagon and White House Officials responsible. Being a Vietnam Veteran who was responsible for having the famous memorial to that war erected, Wheeler was more than knowledgeable about the United States massive chemical and biological attacks in that conflict and had vowed to not let happen again.
Sadly, but all too common in the United States these days, when Wheeler threatened to go public with what was happening he was targeted for death, and as a “sign” to anyone else thinking of going against the regime, had his body dumped in a garbage pit for all the World to see.
Today, another great American was murdered in an effort to save his country from destruction. Sadly, his death will go barely noticed; the American people seem no longer to care as they continue to seek their solace in their propaganda media lies rather than confronting the brutal truth about the monsters they have let rule over them.
For hundreds of thousands of other Americans they have become so disassociated with what is happening to, and around them, they have proclaimed May 21, 2011 as the day the World will end and are giving up everything in preparing to meet their God.
The great American Revolutionary leader Noah Webster once said, “Every child in America should be acquainted with his own country. He should read books that furnish him with ideas that will be useful to him in life and practice. As soon as he opens his lips, he should rehearse the history of his own country.”
The Americans living today have utterly failed to heed these words and have, instead, become just what their masters have always intended for them to be… imbeciles. May God have mercy on them all.

I'm doing this post via my phone (like I normally do) so hopefully I copy and pasted the whole thing correctly. Do a Google search with the words John Wheeler, Putin, Iraqi WMD, dead birds all together and see what comes up.
