MONTICELLO, Minn. Four nuclear power plants in the Northeast have been alerted to check for potential problems after trouble at a sister plant in Minnesota.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says the plants are similar in age and design to Xcel Energy's Monticello (mahn-tih-SEL'-oh), Minnesota, plant, which has been shut down since last Wednesday.

The plants alerted are Vermont Yankee and Oyster Creek in New Jersey, Nine Mile Point in New York, and Pilgrim in Massachusetts.

An N-R-C spokesman says the notification was done as a precaution.

The Monticello plant was shut down following the failure of welds that hold in place a 35-thousand-pound box containing valves that control steam pressure. No radiation was released.
