    Default Favorite War Movies

I watched one my favorite war movies again last night and got to wondering if others here like the same movies, different, or even dislike them all around. So here's your chance to share which war movies you watch whenever a chance arrives.

Mine are as follows; though likely there are more I'm not remembering at this late hour.

We Were Soldiers - 2002 (Mel Gibbson)

Windtalkers - 2002 (Nicolas Cage) *actually met a navajo radioman from WWII in real life*

All Quiet on the Western Front - 1930 (Louis Walheim)

Sands of Iwo Jima - 1949 (John Wayne)

The Deer Hunter - 1978 (Robert De Niro)

    Stalag 17 - 1953 (William Holden)

The Great Escape - 1963 (Steve McQueen)

    What are yours?

This is my favorite genre in movies. I usually watch war movies alone because most women I know don't like the fighting and most men I know don't think a show is worth watching w/o some t&a. I like Saving Private Ryan and Emeny at the Gate and The Patriot the best so far. Windtalkers and We were soldiers were good, too. (I also like King Arthur and the Matrix trilogy.) I have a whole lot more that I need to watch here at home--particularly Patton. Black Hawk Down had it's pluses and minuses but I liked it well enough.

    Great topic Brian!

My personal top favorite, if you can call it a movie (it was really a mini series), is by far Band of Brothers. In my opinion it is leaps and bound THE best war movie of all time.

Others I like, some of which have been mentioned:
    • Red Dawn (of course! )
    • Full Metal Jacket
    • We Were Soldiers
    • Saving Private Ryan
    • Emeny at the Gate
    • The Patriot
    • Schindler's List
    • Braveheart
    • Black Hawk Down
    • Memphis Belle
    • The Day After
    • Threads
    • The Siege of Firebase Gloria (only seen part of this, not the whole movie)
I've seen many others but those jump out the most.

Also, I've heard Gods and Generals is a good movie but I've never had a chance to watch it.

I'm not much of a war movie fan, but I remember Sgt. York.

You guys already named most of my favorite ones, or at least the ones I can remember. Guns of Navarone is one of my all time favorites. Other ones that come to mind are:

The Bridge on the River Kwai(1957)
    Platoon(1986)
    The Thin Red Line(1998)
    Black Hawk Down(2001)
    The Tuskegee Airmen(1995)
The Private War of Major Benson(1955).....( just kidding, this one is here just because it was filmed in my old military school)

Boy, this is one of my favorite movie genres. I'm all over the board with my favorites though. I'm also reasonably certain that I'm forgetting some.

They Were Expendable (1945, John Wayne)
The African Queen (1951, Humphrey Bogart)
    Patton (1970, George C. Scott)
    Memphis Belle (1990)
The Last of the Mohicans (1992)
    The Tuskegee Airmen (1995)
The Revolutionary War Video Series (1995, Narrated by Charles Kuralt)
    Gladiator (2000, Russell Crowe)
    Tears of the Sun (2003)

    The Patriot
    Glory
    Dances with Wolves
All Quite On The Western Front
    Patton
    Battleground
    Schindler's List
    Saving Private Ryan
    Band of Brothers mini-series
    Enemy At The Gates
    Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo
