MOSCOW, December 11 (RIA Novosti) – Russia will soon start developing a prototype of an advanced lightweight fighter jet to supplement fifth-generation T-50 aircraft, a top government official said Wednesday.

The new aircraft is expected to be cheaper to produce and easier to maintain, but should also possess combat capabilities and performance characteristics comparable with those of heavy-class aircraft.

“The development of a light-class fighter has been included in the current arms procurement program. It will be created,” said Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, addressing the lower house of parliament.

Rogozin, who oversees the defense and space industries, said light-class fighters were in greater demand abroad, compared to more advanced heavy-class aircraft, such as Su-30 or the planned T-50 fighter jets.

Russia is currently developing the heavy-class T-50 multirole fighter aircraft, also known as PAK-FA, which will be the core of the country’s future fighter fleet.

The T-50 is expected to enter service with the Russian air force in 2016.

    The T-50 fifth-generation fighter

Rogozin, who first voiced the idea of developing a second type of a fifth-generation fighter in February 2012, said Wednesday that Russia has always had at least two types of tactical fighters that in general supplemented one another.

The latest example is a MiG-29/Su-27 pair.

Rogozin did not specify which of Russia’s two main designers of combat jets – MiG or Sukhoi – will be assigned the development of the future light-class fighter.

Fighter T-50 Improves It's Stealth Capabilities

Thanks to a new design solution PAK FA can move ahead of the American F-22

Fifth-generation fighter T-50 (PAK FA) , a number of elements which made Rosteh enterprises become less visible to the enemy radar. Due to design solution T-50 ahead in this characteristic all aircraft of the Russian army and the American F-22.

Aircraft "Sukhoi" repeatedly failed to reduce the effective surface scattering PAK FA - the basic characteristic of visibility of the aircraft radars. Now the average value of this indicator for the fighter is from 0.1 to 1 square meter. Thus, it became 15 times "inconspicuous" Su-27 passes Lenta.ru.

To achieve this invisibility to radar designers have decided to move all the side arms into the body of the plane and change the shape of the inlet channel. Furthermore, the inlet channel walls are additionally coated with materials that absorb radio waves.

In order to avoid additional scattering of electromagnetic waves, the gaps at the joints of different structural elements fighter filled conductive sealants. Transparent cockpit canopy covered with a metallic glazed to reflect the incident radio waves.

The changes also affected avionics. For example, the reverse side of the optical sensors, it was decided to perform aircraft of radar absorbing coatings. When the sensors are inactive, they face the back of the incident radar energy.

Thanks to a new design solution, T-50 ahead of not only all the samples available on the Russian Army, but also modern foreign models. For example, the "visibility" of the American fifth generation fighter F-22 is 0.3-0.4 square meters, said chief designer Alexander Davydenko PAK FA.

As you know, the T-50 is superior to the American plane, not only on this parameter. Russian aircraft speed greater by 500 km / h, the weight of the structure is smaller and the flight time is much higher. In addition, T-50 more maneuverable than the U.S. fighter.

T-50 - it's a plane, able to perform any task designed for fighter and attack aircraft and bombers. Fifth generation fighter aircraft invisible to enemy radar, can reach speeds over 2500 km / h and has an artificial intelligence. The aircraft can perform complex operations that were previously not feasible without the intervention of the pilot.

Now five samples T-50 flight tests, state tests of the aircraft is scheduled for 2014. Defense Ministry has already ordered 60 aircraft, and the first combat vehicles, is expected to go to the army in 2016.

Recall that enterprises Rosteh made the main parts of the T-50. Avionics and avionics, satisfying the requirements of the fifth generation aircraft, creating the concern "Radio-electronic technology" . Canopy and trim specialists make holding PT Himkompozit. T-50 is the first Russian combat aircraft with a high proportion of composite materials. Their share in the total weight of the empty aircraft is 25%, and on the surface of the aircraft - 70%.

The power plant is being developed by designers United Engine Corporation . Work on the engine fifth-generation concentrated in established on the basis of ODC Division "engines for combat aircraft." Now the prototype T-50 engines are installed the first phase of the AL-41F1. This Aviation Turbofan engine with afterburner and thrust vector control. With this engine aircraft capable of supersonic speed without afterburner develop.

Another holding Rosteh "Aviation" developed unique Aviasistemy and units for the T-50. Especially for the fighter in the enterprise has created a new holding company system DC power supply, which is two times more powerful than any existing Russian counterparts.

Russian Rubbish? India Reportedly Disappointed With Stealth Fighters From Moscow

    January 26, 2014

Is the Russian arms industry getting soft?

Despite initial high expectations, the Indian Air Force appears to be souring on a joint development deal with Russia for a new fifth-generation fighter jet, according to the Business Standard, a major Indian business publication. The Russian prototype is "unreliable, its radar inadequate, its stealth features badly engineered,” said Indian Air Force Deputy Air Marshall S Sukumar at a Jan. 15 meeting, according to minutes obtained by the Business Standard.

That contrasts sharply with high hopes voiced by the Indian government when the joint project, to which the Indian government has contributed $6 billion, began.

“[The new plane] will have advanced features such as stealth, supercruise, ultra-maneuvrability, highly integrated avionics suite, enhanced situational awareness, internal carriage of weapons and Network Centric Warfare capabilities,” the Indian government said in a December 2010 press release. Those are all hallmarks of “fifth generation” aircraft.

The Indian Air Force did not respond to a request for comment.

But it is hardly surprising that the invisible-to-radar Russian fighter planes don't quite live up to the billing, according to defense experts reached by FoxNews.com.

“The Russians are certainly not up to speed in avionics,” Robbin Laird, who has served as a consultant to the Marine Corps and Air Force and started the website Second Line of Defense, told FoxNews.com. “For them to pull off a stealth airframe, and for it to actually be stealthy, the engine technology has to be very good. Americans have done it with the F-22 and F-35. But it’s not easy to do. No one has done it but ourselves.”

India is the largest arms importer in world, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, and its military import large amounts from both Russia and western countries.

“The Indians for a long time have split their fighter industry between western work and Russian work,” Laird said.

“Clearly they want to go more Western because they recognize that the Russian stuff just isn't up to the western standards. You only have so much money to go around, and like everybody else they've got financial pressures,” he added.

Other security experts said that India has a history of incompetence when it comes to military procurement, and so it did not necessarily reflect badly on Russia.

“India has had so many problems absorbing modern equipment and supporting it that it’s difficult to know whether it says anything about the Russian systems at all,” Anthony Cordesman, who has served as a consultant for the State and Defense departments and who holds the Burke Chair in Strategy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told FoxNews.com.

Laird said that the Indians may be souring on the Russian deal in part to save funds so they can build more French-designed Dassault Rafale fighter jets, which can be built relatively quickly, unlike the still-to-be-designed “fifth-generation” planes under development with the Russians.

“The Rafale is a very nice aircraft, and they'll look at all the stuff the French are putting on that aircraft, and they'll look at the Russian stuff and say, why am I going down that path? Do I trust the Russians really are going to reach to the standards we set?”

Laird said that India would be best off purchasing the already-developed fifth-generation Lockheed Martin F-35 – but that the United States government had not given permission for such a sale, even though Indian officials had asked several times to be able to consider the plane.

“If they get a chance to really look at the F35, they would want it," Laird said. "The Indians have requested 3 times to talk to people about the F-35B, which is the true revolutionary aircraft -- and the administration never answered the mail, they've blown them off, it's typical of the Obama administration. We love our allies except if you want anything.”

He added that India may in fact not be at the level where it should be trusted with F-35s, however, so the administration would be right to turn them down. But he argued that the F-35 is ahead of what Russia has.

“The Russians are good aircraft designers, and they know how to build an agile aircraft, and [the new plane they are working on] is a step forward the path of more agility and flexibility, but the problem is -- it's not all about the frame, it's about what your put in it. The F35 can see around itself, 360 degrees, can see a missile take off 820 miles away, it has a radar that's extraordinary, and the systems are integrated. The Russians I think are nowhere near that at this point.”

Laird admitted that there was a kind of “ho-hum” aspect to those types of features, but said that the information they provide to pilots and commanders would pay off in a combat situation.

Cordesman also said that he was unsurprised by the Indian complaints, given what he knew about Russian air capabilities.

“They’re very good at building airplanes,” Cordesman said. “The problem that Russia, since the collapse of the former Soviet Union, has been putting out the military equivalent of show cars. They look good, but it isn’t always clear how practical they are and how many of the specifications they can actually meet.”

In the Russian Air Force flight center , located in Akhtubinsk , February 21 came fifth generation fighter T-50 . In the near future military aircraft will proceed to the state tests , the site says the company "Sukhoi" . Thus, the armed forces first entered newest fighter .

Immediate delivery of the aircraft in the air force , which is also called a promising aviation complex tactical aircraft (PAK FA) , will begin in 2016 , said in an interview with European Defence & Security Review (ESDPA Review) head of the United Aircraft Corporation Mikhail Pogosyan .

According to him , today made five T-50 machines . One of these aircraft have already forwarded a test pilot Sergey Chernyshev in Akhtubinsk . The other four are the PAK FA in Zhukovsky near Moscow .

All four machines continue flight tests. Planes have already passed the aerodynamic characteristics , indicators of stability and controllability . Also been updated locating system of four fighters. On new fighter test pilots worked mode refueling and super maneuverability .

That maneuverability is one of the distinguishing features of the new fighter from its predecessors. Among other differences, also called " supersonic cruising " when a fighter able to fly at supersonic speeds without afterburner included . However, the main difference is still called that all available information during the flight analyzed by the computer , and the pilot is provided in the form of tips .

Specifications PAK FA while still being kept secret . There is only the assumption that the new fighter will be able to develop a speed of up to 2.6 thousand kilometers per hour and a time to fly a 5.5 thousand kilometers. On the fighter may accommodate 10 suspension points in the closed bomb bay and two additional external pylons .

Earlier, the new Russian aircraft , the Indian military and interested now, as noted in an interview Pogosyan , is currently under development on the basis of the PAK FA fighter of Indo-Russian FGFA. Indian side in cooperation with Russia is represented by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. As the words of Pogosyan, before representatives of HAL were " misunderstandings in this program ," but to date these have managed to overcome misunderstandings .

According to plans of the Defense Ministry , the adoption of the fifth generation fighter is scheduled for service in 2017. Contents of the PAK FA , according to estimates, defense department will cost cheaper than other available models armed fighters. For comparison, the operating hour of the fourth generation aircraft Su-27 costs about 10 thousand dollars, and the T-50 - 1.5 thousand dollars. At the moment, the Ministry of Defense with defense enterprises have agreements on the establishment of 60 fifth-generation fighter .

Stunning image of Russia’s new stealth plane clearly shows new shark (AKULA) camouflage

    Nov 30 2013 - 11 Comments

    By David Cenciotti

As already explained, Russia’s 5th generation stealth fighter plane T-50 (PAK FA – Perspektivny Aviatsionny Kompleks Frontovoy Aviatsii—Future Tactical Air System), has receintly received a new camouflage.

A new image of the example 055 blue, taken on Nov. 22 by Artyom Anikeev gives a hint of what the paint scheme looks like as seen from the top (or when the aircraft is turning). Click on the image to open it at full resolution.

As a consequence of the new color scheme (seemingly inspired by the White Tip Longimanus shark typical of the Red Sea) a T-50 seen from distance would appear as a rhomboidal shaped aircraft, smaller than the actual airplane.

Two Russian Stealth Fighters Launch for Weapons Tests

Most stunning image yet of Moscow’s new warplanes

    June 3, 2014

Russia’s Sukhoi T-50 stealth fighter program entered a new phase on May 20 as two of the twin-engine prototypes took off for external weapons integration tests.

Aircraft numbers 053 and 054 are involved in the testing. “Alazan” at Russianplanes.netshot this striking photo of the flight.

Noteworthy, the two T-50s on the May 20 test flight were still wearing the standard color scheme and not the brand-new “shark” camouflage. Between them, 053 and 054 carried R-73 short-range air-to-air missiles, R-77 medium-range air-to-air missiles and KH-31 anti-ship missiles.

Russia has five T-50 test planes and plans to buy scores of the fighters starting in a few years. India is also helping develop a variant, although lately New Delhi has been unhappy with the design.

Russian T-50 PAK FA Fighter Prototype Catches Fire

    June 10, 2014

The fifth flying Sukhoi T-50 PAK FA prototype (side number '055') caught fire on 10 June after landing, heavily damaging the aircraft.

A prototype Sukhoi T-50 PAK FA fifth-generation fighter aircraft caught fire on 10 June following landing, according to Sukhoi.

"While the plane was landing, smoke above the right air intake was observed, then a local fire broke out," Sukhoi stated. The incident occurred at the Zhukovsky test centre, near Moscow, where the T-50 prototypes have been conducting flight trials.

The aircraft involved in the incident is the fifth flying prototype, aircraft T-50-5 (side number '055'), which was delivered for tests at Zhukovsky in November 2013.

According to Sukhoi, the pilot was uninjured and the company has already set up a commission to investigate the cause of the incident. Although incidents involving aircraft prototypes are common, this is the first known accident involving the T-50.

Five T-50 aircraft have been undergoing flight trials, with four aircraft conducting company trials at Zhukovsky and one aircraft ('052') conducting joint state trials at Akhtubinsk since February. Two other T-50 airframes are used for ground tests.

Recently two of the aircraft at Zhukovsky were pictured conducting weapons carriage trials. Aircraft T-50-3 ('053') and T-50-4 ('054') were pictured fitted with two pylons on each wing and equipped with a variety of stores, including: R-73 (AA-11 'Archer') short-range air-to-air missiles; R-77 (AA-12 'Adder') medium-range air-to-air missiles; and Kh-31 (AS-17 'Krypton') anti-radiation/anti-ship air-to-surface missiles.

The T-50 testing programme is currently scheduled for completion in 2015, with series production beginning in 2016, the head of United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) - Sukhoi's parent company - confirmed in March. The aircraft is slated to replace the Su-27 'Flanker' aircraft in Russian Air Force service.

    ANALYSIS

Sukhoi stated that the aircraft will be repaired, and that the fire "will not affect the timing of the T-50 test program". However, a photo issued via UAC on 10 June showed the fire had inflicted significant damage above the aircraft's starboard engine intake and into the aircraft's spine, while much of the underside of the aircraft also appears to have been heavily damaged. Although the aircraft's forward fuselage and cockpit, starboard wing, and empennage appear intact, the level of damage to other parts of the aircraft would indicate the aircraft will need a significant amount of work to repair.

Default Re: Russia's 5th Generation Fighter To Commence Tests In 2009

This was the interesting development in T-50 acquisition I had alluded to in another thread.

Russia’s Stealth Fighter Is in Serious Trouble

The Kremlin cuts back on T-50s

    April 5, 2015

Just a short time ago, Russia planned to have 52 advanced T-50 stealth fighters by the end of the decade. At least, that was the plan.

Now the T-50 program appears to be in serious trouble, and Russia may cut back the fighters to a fraction of the planned strength.

The first sign something was very wrong appeared last month. On March 24. Yuri Borisov, Russia’s deputy defense minister for armaments, told the Kommersant newspaper that the military is drastically cutting its number of T-50s. Instead of 52 stealth fighters, Russia will build merely 12 of them.

    That’s hardly anything.

The Kremlin has produced five T-50 prototypes so far — and one was heavily damaged in a fire. Meanwhile, India is co-developing the plane with Russia, and New Delhi’s funding helps keep the project alive. But now Indian Air Force officials have also stopped talking to their counterparts in Moscow.

Which all puts a spotlight on Russia’s problems building so-called fifth-generation fighter jets — which the country needs to compete with the best the United States and China have to offer.

It’s easy enough building prototypes, but developing a truly capable aircraft — all during a major economic recession — isn’t so simple. That’s especially the case when talking about more than a handful.

“Given the new economic conditions, the original plans may have to be adjusted,” Borisov said. “It is better to have the PAK FA kept as a reserve, and later move forward, while squeezing everything possible for now out of the 4+ generation fighters.”

He was referring to Russia’s modern — but non-stealthy — Su-30 and Su-35 multi-role fighters. Borisov said these fighters will fill the gap left by the T-50’s dwindling production run.

In theory, the T-50 will serve as Russia’s competitor to the U.S. F-22 and F-35 fighters. On the surface, the T-50 appears to be a capable and deadly jet. It’s big, fast and has a long range. At air shows, the blended winged-body plane has demonstrated a high degree of maneuverability.

It has huge, mean-looking twin engines — set wide apart for stability — and a 50-foot wingspan. The T-50 has a large internal weapons bay and stealthy, radar avoidance features. If there are technical problems, Russia doesn’t disclose them.

Officially, Russia’s economic turmoil is responsible for the production cut. The plane’s total development cost is unclear — anywhere from $10 billion to $30 billion. India has already spent about $5 billion. But all is not well on the technical front, either.

Because we know the Indians will disclose problems with the aircraft.

For more than a year, the Indian Business Standard newspaper has reported on New Delhi’s misgivings. The Indian version of the T-50 is known as the FGFA.

“The FGFA’s current AL-41F1 engines were underpowered, the Russians were reluctant to share critical design information, and the fighter would eventually cost too much,” the paper reported, based on briefings from Indian Air Force officials in December 2013.

A month later, more bad news leaked to the press. India wanted a bigger share of the project. But the engine was still bad, it still cost too much, the plane’s radar was “inadequate” and its “stealth features badly engineered.”

Then in June, a T-50 landed at the Zhukovsky testing grounds near Moscow … and its engine caught fire. Russian officials said the damage was minor — but photographs depicted much of the rear fuselage blackened by the blaze.

“What added to the controversy … was Russia’s refusal to share any details of this failure, to the extent that a technical evaluation team of the Indian Air Force that reportedly was present at the site was refused access to inspect the damaged platform,” Monika Chansoria of the Center for Land Warfare Studies in New Delhi told Defense News.

India and Russia should have continued negotiations for the development contract. But now New Delhi is incommunicado with Moscow. The Russian defense ministry wanted meetings with their Indian counterparts between February and March. India didn’t respond.

“[Indian Air Force] marshals fear the FGFA undermines the rationale for buying the Rafale fighter from France, an $18–$20 billion contract that is sputtering through so-far unsuccessful negotiations,” the Business Standard reported.

Russia media outlets suggested the drop in oil prices is largely responsible for scaling back the T-50. The Kremlin is short on cash and might not be able to justify spending billions of dollars on a fancy new stealth fighter — or at least 52 of them.

If so, once the Russian economy improves, the T-50 could return to its original schedule — albeit a bit later than expected. That’s probably the best-case scenario.

The worst case involves serious — but mysterious — technical problems. And if India goes farther and ditches its share of the program, the T-50 will go from having major issues into being a catastrophe.

It would mean billions of dollars of hoped-for investment washing down the sink — and the loss of Russia’s largest potential buyer on the international market.

The Russian air force largely dates to the Soviet era  — and it’s getting older every day. Russia simply can’t replace its aging fighters fast enough or build the most advanced jets at the same rate as Washington or Beijing.

But Russia can make evolutionary improvements to existing designs, such as the Su-30 and Su-35. Which is all to say that building a more revolutionary aircraft such as the T-50 might be one step too far.

Could China be making better progress on their 5th gen fighter program than Russia?

    Russia has a new T-50 PAK-FA prototype, possible No. 056 ?

Recently photo of a new T-50 FA is circulating on the internet. The new T-50 appearantly has a light gray paint but does not have a tail number.

Some experts believe this to be number 056 aircraft, the seventh in the series of aircraft produced by Russia. According to information available in the public domain, there are 6 T-50 aircrafts produced - two for static and system testing and integration and four for flight and avionics testing.

Russian military expert comparing F-35 and T-50 (PAK-FA) (English subtitles)

Published on Aug 25, 2016FOR ENGLISH SUBTITLES TURN ON CAPTIONS (CC)!

Fresh opinion of a Russian military exper Mikhail Khodaryonok (Rus: Михаил Ходарёнок) about 5th generation planes, and comparison of main competitors: F-35 'Lightning-2' and Sukhoi T-50 (PAK-FA). This was on a radio show, and in that particular day, their camera broke. They always have video, but not that 1 day...

The other two are hosts - Evgeniy Satanovskiy (Rus: Евгений Сатановский) and Sergei Korneevskiy (Rus: Сергей Корнеевский). The show is called 'From 2 until 5'.

It seems despite all negative prediction and bad mouth, F-35 turned out to be a mighty machine, and total success. So, guys, please, if you don't want to embarrass yourself, don't post Pierre Sprey links and comments.

It looks like T-50 is also not that far behind. Maybe lacks some components, but nothing too discouraging. It looks like it's gonna be a revolutionary machine for Russia, that emits confidence.

    Interview took place on 11.08.16.

Russian Air Force Receives First Batch Of T-50 5th Gen Fighters

LANGKAVI (Malaysia), March 22 - RIA Novosti.

Russia's air and space forces in the first batch of fifth-generation T-50 fighters (the PAK FA project) will receive six vehicles, Air Force Commander Lieutenant-General Andrei Yudin told the media on Wednesday at the Langkawi arms exhibition.

Previously, representatives of the Defense Ministry have repeatedly stated that the first deliveries will begin this year.

"T-50 - there are no secrets here, this is an airplane with supersonic speed in a non-skipper mode, barely noticeable, with artificial intelligence." We'll get this car. "Six pieces," Yudin said, answering the relevant question.

After a long wait in the lenses of the spotters, the eighth summer prototype of the fifth-generation Russian fighter PAK FA, the T-50-9 aircraft (board number "509") finally landed.

The plane made its first flight to Komsomolsk-on-Amur on April 24, 2017, but neither the reports of his flight nor his photos were officially published.

However, an independent flight T-50-9 from Komsomolsk-on-Amur, which took place from May 10 to May 12, through the whole country for further testing at the airfield of the Flight Research Institute named after M.Sh. MM Gromov in the Moscow region of Zhukovsky, allowed, finally, to take pictures of this side.

Note that the T-50-9 carries an unusual wildish "half-pixel" coloring - made, apparently, in the order of trolling American amateurs, to reproduce all variations of the coloration of the experienced T-50 on the airplanes of the "aggressors" of the US Air Force.
