Fla. students face explosives indictment

WASHINGTON - Two Egyptian students at the University of South Florida were indicted Friday for carrying explosive materials across states lines and one of them was charged with teaching the other how to use them for violent reasons.


Ahmed Abdellatif Sherif Mohamed, 24, an engineering graduate student and teaching assistant at the Tampa-based university, faces terrorism charges for teaching and demonstrating how to use the explosives.


He and Youssef Samir Megahed, 21, an engineering student, were stopped for speeding in Goose Creek, S.C., on Aug. 4, where they have been held on state charges.

How serious is this? Beats me, but the government tends to downplay terrorism connections when they’re obvious, so this is likely to be the real deal.


It’s probably too early to speculate on this, but what they hey, that’s what blogs are for: The two indicted today went to the University of South Florida, home base of former professor Sami al-Arian. He’s the computer engineering prof who was convicted on terrorism charges last year. Now come these two, students at the same school, indicted on terrorism charges.


I only bring this up not to draw any direct connection between the two cases where there may not be any, but to point out how terror recruiting often works. Dr. Tawfik Hamid, interviewed on Stak Attack a few weeks back, was recruited to the jihad in medical school where he found a terror-friendly atmosphere that brought in guest lecturers like Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri. The UK terror doctors were probably recruited in medical school or university as well. Contrary to the left’s notion that poverty and alienation breed terrorists, it’s usually the opposite: It’s the comfortable and educated who tend to be more susceptible to terror recruitment. Mohammad Atta had a PhD. In Dr. Hamid’s case, he went from secular and barely Muslim at all to full-blown jihadi in medical school. If the Goose Creek two turn out to be the real deal, their recruitment and radicalization may have taken place in engineering school at USF.


The point is, these guys aren’t coming out of Pakistani madrassahs where they do nothing but memorize the Koran. They’re coming out of respectable universities where they have earned respectable degrees in respectable fields. They’re not poor and they’re not alienated; they’re middle class or better and assimilated. And they’re jihadis.

Terrorist Threat Greater Than Before 9-11, Says Expert

In a new report released Wednesday afternoon, a security expert said jihadist terrorism currently poses a larger threat than it did before 9/11.

"Measured by the number of terrorist incidents, the jihadist threat is more significant now than it was prior to September 11, 2001," said Bernard Finel, a senior fellow with the liberal-leaning American Security Project. "It is, most notably, significantly worse even than in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks when the American response focused on al Qaeda's infrastructure in Afghanistan."

He called the jihadist terrorists a "vibrant and dynamic movement that has a great deal of strength even to this day. There are more attacks, so certainly they are more effective or more violent."

"In short, the war in Iraq has not noticeably reduced the numbers of jihadists outside of Iraq; rather it has created many more fighters to join the movement," he said. "This finding fundamentally undermines the Bush administration's claim that we are 'fighting them there so we don't have to fight them here.'

"It's been a growing threat for the last couple of decades. The trends were already bad going into the late '90s, and I think we just haven't taken sufficient steps to overturn and to change the trend lines since 9/11," Finel told Cybercast News Service.

Finel also argued that the United States should not focus on Iraq as the central front in the war on terror. The Bush administration's action to reduce state-sponsored terror and gain international cooperation in that effort has worked well, he said.

However, there is a "new kind of threat," one not "based around states," Finel said. "It's really a threat based around an ideology, a movement, and transnational groups. Until we take steps to deal with that kind of a challenge, we're always going to be behind the eight ball."

Finel noted that, instead, U.S. foreign policy should focus on "changing hearts and minds" in the Muslim world.

"On one hand we want people to reject terrorism in the abstract, on the other hand there are a series of beliefs which tend to justify the jihadist movement, just like terrorism -most notably that the United States is supporting these oppressive regimes in the region and that the United States is sort of this aggressive power which is out to attack and harm Islam," he said.

"That's not what American foreign policy is all about," said Finel, "but nonetheless it's a belief that has a lot of credibility in the Muslim world."

But President George W. Bush has often contended that Iraq is central to the war on terror. "The fight in Iraq has a direct impact on the safety of Americans here at home," Bush said in a speech last week.

"We have seen what violent extremists will do when American forces are actively engaged in Iraq, and we can envision what they would do if they were emboldened by American forces in retreat," he said.

"For all those who ask whether the fight in Iraq is worth it, imagine an Iraq where militia groups backed by Iran control large parts of the country, and al Qaeda has established sanctuaries to safely plot future attacks on targets all over the world, including the U.S. Homeland," said Bush, "and they could use billions of dollars in oil revenues to buy weapons and pursue their deadly ambitions."

He added that the most "important and immediate way" to counter terrorist groups is to "win the fight in Iraq."

A victory by "violent extremists" in the Middle East and the region there "could imperil the world," Bush added.

"This administration has really prioritized the issue of international cooperation and ... winning the Iraq War as the central front in the war on terror," said Finel. "They have done some things which are contributory to success in the war on terror. But, that said, it's a question of priorities and what trade-off you're willing to accept.

"I just don't see how you puncture the movement with anything you do in Iraq," he said.

The parcels will be tangible evidence of how effectively and swiftly antibiotics can be delivered if terrorists attack with anthrax. Boston will be the third US city to participate in such an exercise, pairing mail carriers, police officers, and public-health specialists.

The boxes are meant to simulate containers that would carry 20 pills of Doxycycline. Once the drill is completed, recipients of the boxes can recycle them or, Jacob said, save them as a keepsake.

The fake pill boxes will be delivered to every residence in two ZIP codes: 02132, in West Roxbury, and 02118, which covers most of the South End and a sliver of Roxbury.

NSA Style Eavesdropping Thwarts 9/11 Anniversary Terror Attack

It appears that the very methods of phone call monitoring the Democrats have made their life's mission to impede have once again saved the day.

A plot to destroy American targets in Germany by a terror cell linked to the Islamic Jihad Group was foiled on Tuesday and opponents of the NSA's Terrorist Surveillance Program would do well to bear in mind just how this untold carnage was avoided.

Unfortunately, there's no reason to believe that Democrat leaders the likes of Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Pat Leahy will be any less likely to rebuke the use of "secret" (is there any other effective kind?) wiretaps now than before. Even at the cost of American lives.

You see, the scheme to kill more people than did the 2004 Madrid and 2005 London train bombings, likely on the iniquitous al-Qaeda anniversary, was uncovered in large part through exactly such Dem-defamed surveillance techniques.

Not only were the details of the plot - including potential targets -- exposed by wiretaps, but according to the New York Times, an unnamed American intelligence official said:

"The United States helped German authorities track the location of two of the German suspects by eavesdropping on their cellphone conversations as they moved out of training camps in Pakistan."

As a result, those 2 Germans and a Turkish co-conspirator are now in custody rather than packing car trunks will powerful hydrogen peroxide fueled incendiaries. 10 additional Islamic suspects remain at large.

Conservative German officials have recently labored to add enhanced communications and computer countermeasures to a new anti-terrorism bill. Such tools, they assert -- including spoof e-mailing tracking malware to terror suspects' computers -- might have facilitated the investigation, perhaps even increasing their initial catch.

Of course, members of the left-wing portion of Chancellor Angela Merkel's coalition government continue to deride the life-saving proposal as a "totally unacceptable intrusion into privacy," current events notwithstanding.

Evidently -- the meaning of the words "we are at war" eludes liberals in any language.

Mosque leader's son, 18, gunned down near Monster Park

The 18-year-old son of the leader of a mosque in San Francisco was shot and killed after driving to Monster Park, possibly to meet someone, authorities said Thursday.
Ali Sayed Ahmed Shahin, 18, of San Francisco was shot several times in the head about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday at Giants Drive and Ingerson Avenue. His car was left at the scene.


"We don't know if it's a robbery, an attempted carjacking or something else," said San Francisco police Lt. John Murphy.


Murphy said investigators have no evidence that Shahin was the victim of a hate crime. He said family members have no idea why anyone would target or attack the teenager.


However, based on the brutality of the attack, it appeared to be a targeted act,

Updated: 19:10, Friday September 07, 2007 There are no overt threats or calls to attack on a new video featuring al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, according to reports from the US. Unidentified American officials are quoted as saying that date references on the video indicate it was made recently.


The recording of bin Laden has been timed to mark the sixth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks against the United States.


It contains the first new images of the terror leader in nearly three years.
The Homeland Security Department has said it had no credible information warning of an imminent threat to the United States.


Tom Casey, deputy State Department spokesman, said: "I don't think that anything he is likely to say or do is going to change our resolve or the resolve of our international partners to confront extremism."


Analysts were also looking at bin Laden's physical characteristics in part, for clues about his health after unconfirmed rumours earlier this year that he had died of kidney disease.


It showed his beard, which in previous messages has been streaked with grey, was black.


Soon after word emerged that the United States had the video, Islamic militant websites that usually carry statements from al Qaeda went down and were inaccessible.

New OBL Tape: Iraq, Democratic Control

ABC News' Jonathan Karl Reports: ABC News has obtained a transcript of the latest taped message from Osama bin Laden.

Sources tell ABC News the tape is approximately 30 minutes long, and does not contain overt threats to the United States.

According to the transcript, bin Laden opens with "praise to Allah" and his "law of retaliation" -- "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth and the killer is killed."

Bin Laden also spoke to the ongoing situation in Iraq throughout the tape, heavily criticizing the Bush administration.

He says to the American people, "you made one of your greatest mistakes, in that you neither brought to account nor punished those who waged this war, not even the most violent of its murderers, [former Defense Secretary Donald] Rumsfeld…"

"You permitted Bush to complete his first term, and stranger still, chose him for a second term, which gave him a clear mandate from you -- with your full knowledge and consent -- to continue to murder our people in Iraq and Afghanistan. Then you claim to be innocent! The innocence of yours is like my innocence of the blood of your sons on the 11th -- were I to claim such a thing."

Bin Laden says President Bush's words echo "neoconservatives like Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Richard Perle."

"People of America: the world is following your news in regards to your invasion of Iraq, for people have recently come to know that, after several years of tragedies of this war, the vast majority of you want it stopped. Thus, you elected the Democratic Party for this purpose, but the Democrats haven't made a move worth mentioning. On the contrary, they continue to agree to the spending of tens of billions to continue the killing and war there."

The transcript indicates that bin Laden refers to statements from U.S. soldiers in Iraq, from an interview taped by a British journalist. Portions of the interview aired in a July report on ABC News.

"It would benefit you to listen to the poignant messages of your soldiers in Iraq, who are paying -- with their blood, nerves and scattered limbs -- the price for these sorts of irresponsible statements," the transcript says.

"Among them is the eloquent message of Joshua which he sent by way of the media, in which he wipes the tears from his eyes and describes American politicians in harsh terms and invites them to join him there for a few days," the statement continues.

According to the transcript, bin Laden says there are two ways to end the war:

"The first is from our side, and it is to continue to escalate the killing and fighting against you."

The second is to do away with the American democratic system of government. "It has now become clear to you and the entire world the impotence of the democratic system and how it plays with the interests of the peoples and their blood by sacrificing soldiers and populations to achieve the interests of the major corporations."

The rambling transcript also mentions French President Sarkozy, which suggests the tape was made after Sarkozy's election in May.

Bin Laden comes close to offering a date for the tape with this by saying, "... just a few days ago, the Japanese observed the 62nd anniversary of the annihilation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by your nuclear weapons." The anniversary was on August 6.

He goes on to call Noam Chomsky "among one of the most capable of those from your own side," and mentions global warming and "the Kyoto accord."

He also speaks to recent issues grabbing headlines in the United States, referring to "the reeling of many of you under the burden of interest-related debts, insane taxes and real estate mortgages; global warming and its woes..."

"To conclude," bin Laden says, "I invite you to embrace Islam." He goes on to say: "There are no taxes in Islam, but rather there is a limited Zakaat [alms] totaling 2.5 percent.”

Man taking photos of I-80 bridge found to be on terror watch list

STROUDSBURG, Pa. - The Monroe County district attorney says a man on a terrorism watch list was discovered taking photos of the Interstate 80 bridge crossing the Delaware River.

District Attorney E. David Christine tells The Morning Call of Allentown that police talked with the man Monday, but didn't detain him. Christine says the man told police he was taking pictures for fun while on vacation. Christine says authorities didn't learn that the man was on the FBI watch list until later.

The man's name wasn't immediately released.

The man was taking pictures from the New Jersey side of the bridge.

Man with AK-47 assault rifle arrested after leaving Dearborn's Hemlock Park

DEARBORN - Houssein Zorkot, a 26-year-old Dearborn resident, was arraigned Tuesday in 19th District Court on multiple felony charges, including carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent — a five-year felony.

Zorkot, a third-year medical student at Wayne State University, was allegedly armed with an AK-47 assault rifle and dressed in black clothing with camouflage paint covering his face when he was arrested Saturday in Hemlock Park.

According to police, Zorkot was observed attempting to leave the park in a black SUV after officers had received reports of a man carrying a rifle in the area. He was placed under arrest and is scheduled to undergo a preliminary examination at 9 a.m. Sept. 21 in 19th District Court.

CA: SWAT teams hit the streets to try to quell Richmond violence (11 GSWs in 24 hours)

Richmond police put SWAT teams on the streets today after two more people were shot, bringing the number of shootings in the city since Tuesday to 11.

The violence, which investigators believe is the product of a gang war, has claimed the lives of three people.

Two people were wounded, one critically, at 10:17 a.m. today when someone fired 30 rounds from a small-caliber pistol at Gertrude Avenue and Filbert Street just across the border from unincorporated North Richmond, police Lt. Mark Gagan said.

Gagan said investigators believe that gangs from northern Richmond and the central district are feuding and that the shootings are connected. Some of the shooters have used high-caliber guns and fired numerous rounds, prompting authorities to roll out SWAT teams for patrols.

Chertoff: We're Preparing for Nuclear Attack

WASHINGTON -- Weapons of mass destruction, small boats packed with explosives and Islamic radicalization are the greatest terrorist threats facing the country, top U.S. security officials said Monday on the eve of the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The officials told Congress the country is much better prepared to face terror threats than it was then, but that terrorists' desire to attack the United States remains strong — an assertion that has yet to be fully accepted by the American public, according to a new poll.

"The enemy is not standing still. They are constantly revising their tactics and adapting their strategy and their capabilities," said Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. "And if we stand still — or worse yet, if we retreat — we are going to be handing them an advantage that we dare not see them hold."

He said the threat of a USS Cole-type attack on U.S. ports — where a small boat packed with explosives detonates in a harbor — is one of his top concerns.

And while the department's goal is to keep nuclear weapons from entering the country, he said it also is focusing on how it would respond should a nuclear device get through and explode — particularly how to identify and track the nuclear materials. Chertoff also said the department is putting in place new screening regulations that would require providing information on flight crews and passengers before a private aircraft departs from overseas bound for the United States.

The radicalization of potential new terrorists, in the U.S. and abroad, is another growing concern, the intelligence officials said at the hearing on the nation's terrorism preparedness.

FBI Director Robert S. Mueller said there is already a problem with radicalization in the United States, and the Internet makes recruiting people to the radical cause much easier. He said working with state and local law enforcement and reaching out to Muslim and South Asian communities is critical to root out violent extremists in American communities.

The U.S. has disrupted several homegrown plots and has helped disrupt overseas plots, most recently last week when three Islamic terror suspects were arrested in Germany. Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell said monitoring overseas conversations was key to catching the suspected German terrorists.

He stressed the importance of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act — known as FISA — and said the country would lose half of the tools it uses to fight terrorism if lawmakers choose to roll back its powers. Congress updated the law last month, but civil liberties advocates and some leading congressional Democrats think the updated law gives the intelligence community too much surveillance power and want to revisit it to add more limits.

Despite the confidence expressed by top administration officials, fewer Americans believe the country is adequately prepared for another attack. A CBS News/New York Times poll taken Sept. 4-9 found that 39 percent of Americans think the country is sufficiently ready — down from 49 percent a year ago and 64 percent in March 2003, when the war in Iraq began.

I'd like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to "be prepared" for whatever happens. Unlike "Glenn" from FR, the individual who advocates we "lay down and die" (ok to be fair, he didn't say that, simply implied it) I advocate preparations for the worst.

Expect that if we go into Iran, other countries may indeed get involved this time around. China, Russia, North Korea to name three, are dead set against us doing so. They have "warned the US" several times.

We may find ourselves being shot at by people who have allied themselves with Iran. It's not likely, but it is possible. There is always the chance that nuclear weapons may become involved.

If we are hit, it will be limited, certain cities. But it will definately cause us electrical problems around the US. So, I'm advocating the use of battery operated radios, flashlights and so on. IF you can afford one, a good, small, multiband receiver with a built in battery/generator (it's a crank radio).

I think I have posted pictures of the one I bought. It cost about 39 bucks, and works fine.

I don't really NEED one at my location, as I have ways to charge batteries, though I am not really ready for a full blown, weeks long outage, but I can do what I need to do to charge battery systems.

Also, I do have a small generator which needs work, but, I can always rework that into something that works fine for charging things. (Bicycles come to mind).

Anyway... when I say "Prepare".... here's what I mean.

Examine your food and water supplies, and make sure you have enough for at LEAST 72 hours without needed help.

Add stuff to your supplies as necessary. Make sure (as we do) your food supplies are the same things you NORMALLY consume throughout the month.

Try to have at least a month of supplies if possible. As long as possible if not a month.

Check water supplies. Make sure you have containers in which to store water if things start happening. (Use the bath tub, pots, pans, and even large plastic garbage bags -- double bagged, inside of some sort of cloth sack to make it easier to move them).

If the "SHTF", start filling everything with water. If water is turned off, you wont even be able to flush toilets.

Turn off the INPUT to your water tank. Use that water as stored water.

Use the water in the TANK of your toilet(s). Usually 203 gallons in there. And it is potable (drinkable).

Keep your gas tank at least 1/2 full. This should not be more of budget strain than filling it when it is empty. Simply set aside money for your next refill, and when it gets to 1/2, fill the tank back up. (This gives you at LEAST 1/2 a tank if you need the vehicle for warmth, using it to generate power, getting away from a danger area, etc.)

Make sure you have spare, usable batteries for your radio, flashlight. Or get a "crank radio" and flashlight.

Make sure you have an emergency plan in place for your family.

In the emergency plan include:

Phone numbers for friends, relatives and neighbors close to your area.

A specific meeting location if you can't get back to your home for some reason.

A way to check in daily or hourly.

An escape plan if everything in the neighborhood goes to hell.

Very important to be in touch with people while you CAN be in touch. Very important for family members to be able to meet up someplace and plan "from there" if necessary.

Make plans to have monthly "meetings" with family, friends or included "extended family" to go over plans "just in case".

These are very basic plans. This is what everyone SHOULD be doing ANYWAY, in case of blizzards, floods, hurricanes, etc. These plans are not "over the top" as was being suggested by some. These are NORMAL PLANS EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE IN PLACE EVERYWHERE.

This is not paranoia. This is COMMON SENSE. The government is there to help, AFTER IT'S ALL OVER. They are not going to rescue you, save you, stop a terrorist attack that is in progress. They are not coming to give you food, money, water or help.

YOU WILL HAVE TO DEPEND ON YOURSELF for some time. Get used to that. It's the way it is.

The ONLY person to help you will be you. If others DO help, then you're lucky. Otherwise never count on anyone but yourself!

To the thief who stole the yellow box out of a pickup truck in Forest Lake late Wednesday or early Thursday: What's inside of that box is hot, indeed, but not just because it's stolen.




It's radioactive.

On Thursday, Minnesota health officials issued a warning regarding the stolen device, which is used to measure the moisture content in soil and construction materials.

"The radioactive materials are actually encased and encapsulated; they're inside metal, and they aren't going to be exposed unless somebody does physically break the unit," said Buddy Ferguson, a spokesman for the Minnesota Health Department, which regulates use of this kind of device and others similar to it.

The radioactive elements are Cesium 137 and Americium 241, he said.
"You obviously always want to avoid any unnecessary exposure to radiation, and that's really what we're dealing with here," Ferguson said.

"In terms of getting a big dose of radiation from this, that's not going to happen unless you have prolonged close exposure to it ... This is really about exercising a reasonable amount of caution."
