The arrest and detention of Julian Assange Tuesday on charges of rape and sexual assault was at the least a convenient development for government leaders who've sought ways to contain the leader of the controversial website Wikileaks.

But in an exclusive interview with ABC News' Jim Sciutto, Wikileaks' spokesman Kristinn Hrafnsson insisted Assange's arrest won't alter the site's calculated release of thousands of secret government cables, which still continues according to plan. The site published a new slate of cables Wednesday.

"It is not derailing us in any way," said Hrafnsson, adding that a group of five to six people is running Wikileaks' operations in Assange's absence. "This is a turning tide and starting a trend that you can't really stop unless you want to shut down the Internet."

Meanwhile, supporters of Assange are saying the timing and nature of the personal allegations against him are more than coincidence – they're "politically motivated." And the confluence of recent events gives at least the appearance that could be true.

In mid-August, two Swedish women told prosecutors and news outlets they had each had consensual sex with Assange, but that he didn't use a condom against their wishes and subsequently refused to get tested for sexually-transmitted disease. Their complaint led to a warrant on charges of sexual molestation.

But now prosecutors allege Assange forcibly raped at least one of the women and sexually assaulted the other -- significantly more serious allegations than what investigators initially pursued.

Assange, 39, was formally charged and held without bond in London on one count of rape, two of sexual assault, and one of coercion. He has denied the allegations and insists the sex with both women was consensual.

"Fortunately, the international corralling was successful," Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said shortly after Assange's arrest. "Assange has hurt international diplomatic relations and I hope he is questioned and tried as established by law."

Assange's brainchild, Wikileaks, is also weathering its most intense attacks to date. The site has been bumped from its servers without notice and mysteriously cut off from key funding sources after PayPal and major credit card companies, Visa and MasterCard, pulled the plug pending "further investigation."

"We are getting seriously close to censorship in the U.S., and that must surely go against the fundamental values the country is based upon," said Hrafnsson.

Swiss authorities Monday closed a Swiss bank account tied to Assange, freezing tens of thousands of dollars used to fund the Wikileaks operation, his lawyers said.

"It wouldn't be surprising in the least that Wikileaks and political pressure from the U.S. and other affected governments has at least something to do with the current charges in Sweden," said American University law professor Stephen Vladeck, an expert in national security and international criminal law. But "whether it's because of that pressure [that he faces charges] is something I think we can't know."

Online supporters of whistleblowing website Wikileaks are fighting back after news of Julian Assange’s arrest hit the wires.

Online activists known as “Anonymous” have initiated what they called Operation:Payback, a call to action to bring down the websites of companies that have publicly removed services once used by the Wikileaks website.

Anoymous has already targeted the Swiss bank PostFinance, a bank that froze all payments to the controversial website, after it promised to take down PayPal, the online payment company that cancelled Wikileaks’ account that it used to solicit donations.

Its current target? Mastercard. The website is currently down for a large number of users after a DDOS attack.

All of the groups actions have been publicly posted to the Anon_Operation Twitter account; the Paypal attack was posted to Twitter on December 6, declaring “target: www.paypal.com is YOYOing. Keep firing your lazors!”, the PostFinace attack was declared 17 hours ago and just minutes ago it was confirmed by the group that Mastercard had been taken offline as a result of its online assault.

Anonymous is a collection of online activists formed from popular online message boards, attacks are not for profit but are in most cases to demonstrate a show of force to promote unfair practises or highlight sensitive political issues. The three attacks here could just be the start of an uncomfortable few hours for the companies involved.

In the strongest comments to come out of Russia in the latest WikiLeaks saga, Putin also took aim at the U.S. for the cables, some of which had derided Russia a "mafia state."

Assange's arrest in London earlier this week indicated that the West isn't as democratic as it thinks it is, Putin suggested.

"If there is democracy, it must be a full one. Why did they jail Mr. Assange? Is that democracy?" Putin said at a news conference Thursday. "You know what our villagers say: while someone's cow is mooing, yours better be silent." The Russian expression is loosely equivalent to the pot calling the kettle black.

"So I would like to shoot the puck back at our American colleagues," said Putin.

The prime minister also took a shot at the accuracy of the diplomatic observations in the classified cables.

"Do you yourself think that the U.S. diplomatic service is a crystal clear source of information?" Putin asked.

One of the released cables from the U.S. embassy in Paris quoted Secretary of Defense Robert Gates saying "Russian democracy has disappeared and the government is an oligarchy run by the security services."

Russia has said the release of the cables -- which called Putin an "alpha dog" -- would not affect relations with the U.S. But Putin and others have criticized them, with President Dmitry Medvedev last week saying they illustrate the "cynicism" of American diplomacy.

Medvedev, widely viewed as the junior partner in Russia's ruling tandem, was described in the cables as the Robin to Putin's Batman.

On Thursday, Russia called on NATO to explain a recently released cable that showed NATO was drawing up plans to defend Baltic countries from a Russian attack.

"With one hand, NATO seeks agreement with us on joint partnership, and with the other, it makes a decision that it needs to defend," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters. "So when is NATO more sincere?"

"We have asked these questions and are expecting answers to them. We think we are entitled to that," Larvrov added.

Also Thursday, an anonymous Kremlin official told Russian media that perhaps Assange should be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.

"Public and non-governmental organizations should think of how to help him," the source said, according to the Interfax news agency. "Maybe, nominate him as a Nobel Prize laureate."

To the United States, Julian Assange may now be Public Enemy Number One. Some American politicians have even called for his execution.

But less than a year ago, the founder of WikiLeaks was officially entertained at a US Embassy cocktail party by one of the very diplomats whose secrets he would soon spill to the world.

At the reception, held at the US ambassador's residence in Reykjavik, Iceland, Mr Assange chatted with Sam Watson, the embassy's deputy chief of mission.

He was already sitting on dozens of Mr Watson's classified cables at the time of the December party, including embarrassing details about America's and Britain's role following the collapse of Iceland's banks which were later published to widespread outrage in the local media.

"He certainly had fun at the party," said Birgitta Jonsdottir, an Icelandic MP and former activist in WikiLeaks. "He went as my guest. I said it would be a bit of a prank to take him and see if they knew who he was.

I don't think they had any idea."

Mr Assange's site had already published dozens of leaks embarrassing to the US, including secret Guantanamo Bay detainee handling manuals and the full emails of Sarah Palin, the 2008 Republican vice-presidential candidate. The US State Department condemned the manuals' publication as "a criminal act."

Mr Assange went straight to the party from WikiLeaks' Icelandic base, known as "the bunker," where he was working on the release of a top-secret US Army video showing an attack on civilians in Iraq.
By the time of the party WikiLeaks had also already taken delivery of around 600,000 classified US Army logs from the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, released earlier this year, plus the 250,000 secret US embassy cables which it is releasing now.

"I thought it would be a bit boring to go on my own," said Ms Jonsdottir.

"But the irony was that I went to collect him from his guesthouse and couldn't find him, so just went back to work and didn't even go myself. I found out later he'd just decided to go on his own and got in by saying he was my guest. He said he'd spent a long time talking to Mr Watson."

A confidential cable written by Mr Watson, published by WikiLeaks, detailed discussions between him and Ian Whiting, the British ambassador to Reykjavik.

Mr Whiting wanted to block a proposed to hold a referendum on whether Iceland should repay the British Government after many Britons lost money in the collapse of the Reykjavik bank Icesave.

After the collapse, the British government refunded individual savers in Icesave from its own deposit protection scheme. However, institutional savers, including many local authorities, have not been repaid, and Britain continues to seek full repayment from Iceland for them and for its own expenditure on individual savers.

The US embassy in Reykjavik declined to comment on Mr Assange's invitation.

America's enemies certainly find undignified places to hide. Remember Saddam Hussein's spider hole? Julian Assange found a still more unsavory sanctuary — a British club for journalists:

The Frontline Club in London is the kind of place where war correspondents and investigative reporters mingle with admirers and wannabes, fired by a shared passion for exposing government spin, revealing the truth — and fine dining.

So when WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange found himself at the center of an international firestorm over the website's publication of leaked U.S. diplomatic cables, he knew where he would be well-fed and, more importantly, safe.

Amid calls for Assange's assassination or prosecution under espionage laws and condemnation from U.S. commentators like Sarah Palin — who dubbed him "an anti-American operative with blood on his hands" — the Frontline Club closed ranks and kept his whereabouts to themselves.

Vaughan Smith, a former television cameraman who founded Frontline, said Assange had previously held talks and other events at the club and they "quite liked having him here because he's made us a more interesting venue."

Assange lived in rented rooms at the club for about three weeks until he surrendered to British police on Tuesday in connection with allegations of sexual misconduct in Sweden. Until then, no one at the club, members or employees, spilled the news of his presence.

"It's very curious. While all this was happening, the media has been presenting him as on the run and all these things. I've always been rather amused by that," Smith told msnbc.com.

There's a lesson here for enemies of Western civilization — if you want something big kept secret, make sure only journalists know about it.

Will Heaven, of the Telegraph newspaper, believes the WikiLeaks founder is less a champion for transparency than he is an anti-American activist.

"Julian Assange likes to portray himself as a champion of truth," Heaven wrote in an email to msnbc.com. "But the reality is much less flattering. Look at the Afghanistan 'war logs,' for example: WikiLeaks plainly wanted to cause maximum damage to the coalition's war effort, but nothing was done to hide the identities of Afghan informants — so the Taliban duly promised to 'punish them.'"

"Mr. Assange claims to have pure motives, but he hasn't shown a shred of remorse about this," Heaven added.

"It seems that as long as the United States and the West is embarrassed on the world stage, the founder of WikiLeaks is a happy man," he said.

"If he's really opposed to corruption and human rights abuses, why hasn't he turned his special talents to countries like Iran, China or Russia?

The answer is simple — there is anti-American agenda behind much of Julian Assange's work."

Assange needn't fret about being turned over to the American government; given our current rulers, he would be among friends.

None other than Cass Sunstein introduced Wikileaks to the world in the Washington Post in February of 2007, strangely identifying those behind it as Chinese dissidents. This is the same Cass Sunstein that serves as Obama’s Regulatory Czar. He favors internet free speech limits, as was pointed out in this blog entry. Odd that a guy in favor of limiting speech on the internet introduces Wikileaks to the U.S. via mainstream media.

Is it possible that Julian Assange, the face of Wikileaks, is analogous to Osama Bin Laden, the face of the war on terror?

In an earlier blog entry featuring CNN’s fear mongering Cyber ShockWave special, the possibility that the internet would be shut down at some point to “protect us” was discussed. As the public increasingly gravitates to alternative media for information, at the same time it decreasingly trusts the government and mainstream media – one has to wonder how those accustomed to controlling the information will combat these trends.

Could hacker attacks in the name of Wikileaks, like the one on Amazon.com in Europe today, lead to cybersecurity legislation much as the 9/11 attack led to (wink wink) the Patriot Act?

John Young of cryptome.org has stated that it is possible that Wikileaks will be used to release increasingly dramatic bombshells so that money can be raised on both sides of the battle. Using tax dollars to “protect” us from hackers, while at the same time limiting our internet freedoms would be par for the course.

I have explored this Anonymous matter in order to understand it. What media is getting half right and half wrong is trying to package anonymous as a group. They need groups for definition.

Those who claim to be anonymous yet are in a group are simply activists as a true anonymous acts alone and unknown independent of others acting solo and anonymous. Sometimes a hivemind sort of reaction comes to a matter. That is the power of that non-collective. The infinite compartmentalization of unknown parts. If one anonymous goes down it will not impact a group.

In paring with the above, there have been media reports that suggest websites where anonymous organizes. While my observations confirm some anonymous label-sakes, do go to the reported sites, but its a red herring and a focus for blame. The group of not so anonymous anonymous uses IRC and similar channels to get the real info on targets out. That some sites have snippets is part of injection and luring of wannabee l33t anonymous individuals.

Say TAA had a post or few that suggested an enemy was doing some form of attack on something some or all of us cared about. Would we not check the matter out? It is that kind of injection I am suggesting is at work here.

So, the real anonymous is not a group, nor is it organized as a group, but singular anonymous people who have no faces, names or affiliations.

The reports that show a named person speaking for an anonymous group are the ones who appear to truly be behind the ddos attacks as reported.

It gets confusing when using the same generic label, but I had to figure that out as the actual meaning of anonymous negates the grouping of single anonymous as reported.

'Al-Qaida On Brink Of Using Nuclear Bomb'

Al-Qaida is on the verge of producing radioactive weapons after sourcing nuclear material and recruiting rogue scientists to build "dirty" bombs, according to leaked diplomatic documents.

A leading atomic regulator has privately warned that the world stands on the brink of a "nuclear 9/11".

Security briefings suggest that jihadi groups are also close to producing "workable and efficient" biological and chemical weapons that could kill thousands if unleashed in attacks on the West.

Thousands of classified American cables obtained by the WikiLeaks website and passed to The Daily Telegraph detail the international struggle to stop the spread of weapons-grade nuclear, chemical and biological material around the globe.

At a NATO meeting in January 2009, security chiefs briefed member states that al-Qaida was plotting a program of "dirty radioactive IEDs", makeshift nuclear roadside bombs that could be used against British troops in Afghanistan.

As well as causing a large explosion, a "dirty bomb" attack would contaminate the area for many years.

The briefings also state that al-Qaida documents found in Afghanistan in 2007 revealed that "greater advances" had been made in bioterrorism than was previously realized. An Indian national security adviser told American security personnel in June 2008 that terrorists had made a "manifest attempt to get fissile material" and "have the technical competence to manufacture an explosive device beyond a mere dirty bomb".

Alerts about the smuggling of nuclear material, sent to Washington from foreign U.S. embassies, document how criminal and terrorist gangs were trafficking large amounts of highly radioactive material across Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

The alerts explain how customs guards at remote border crossings used radiation alarms to identify and seize cargoes of uranium and plutonium.

Freight trains were found to be carrying weapons-grade nuclear material across the Kazakhstan-Russia border, highly enriched uranium was transported across Uganda by bus, and a "small time hustler" in Lisbon offered to sell radioactive plates stolen from Chernobyl.

In one incident in September 2009, two employees at the Rossing Uranium Mine in Namibia smuggled almost half a ton of uranium concentrate powder - yellowcake - out of the compound in plastic bags.

"Acute safety and security concerns" were even raised in 2008 about the uranium and plutonium laboratory of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the nuclear safety watchdog.

Tomihiro Taniguchi, the deputy director general of the IAEA, has privately warned America that the world faces the threat of a "nuclear 9/11" if stores of uranium and plutonium were not secured against terrorists.

But diplomats visiting the IAEA's Austrian headquarters in April 2008 said that there was "no way to provide perimeter security" to its own laboratory because it has windows that leave it vulnerable to break-ins.

Senior British defence officials have raised "deep concerns" that a rogue scientist in the Pakistani nuclear program "could gradually smuggle enough material out to make a weapon", according to a document detailing official talks in London in February 2009.

Agricultural stores of deadly biological pathogens in Pakistan are also vulnerable to "extremists" who could use supplies of anthrax, foot and mouth disease and avian flu to develop lethal biological weapons.

Anthrax and other biological agents including smallpox, and avian flu could be sprayed from a shop-bought aerosol can in a crowded area, leaked security briefings warn.

The security of the world's only two declared smallpox stores in Atlanta, America, and Novosibirsk, Russia, has repeatedly been called into doubt by "a growing chorus of voices" at meetings of the World Health Assembly documented in the leaked cables.

The alarming disclosures come after Barack Obama, the U.S. president, last year declared nuclear terrorism "the single biggest threat" to international security with the potential to cause "extraordinary loss of life".

WikiLeaks Releases Mystery File

WikiLeaks released a mysterious encrypted file on Wednesday after telling its followers on Twitter to stand by for "an important announcement."

WikiLeaks did not identify the contents of the 571 megabyte file and it could not be opened without a decryption key, which the anti-secrecy website said would be released "at the appropriate moment."

In July of last year, WikiLeaks posted what it called an "insurance file," which was also encrypted.

According to press reports, the 1.4-gigabyte file was intended for public release in the event of something untoward happening to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Assange is currently fighting extradition from Britain to Sweden where he is wanted to face questioning over allegations of rape and sexual assault.

The release of the latest mystery file comes just days after WikiLeaks published more than 130,000 US diplomatic cables from what it says is a cache of more than 251,000 documents.

Without confirming the authenticity of the latest documents, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the United States "strongly condemns any illegal disclosure of classified information.

"In addition to damaging our diplomatic efforts, it puts individuals' security at risk, threatens our national security and undermines our effort to work with countries to solve shared problems," Nuland told reporters.

"We remain concerned about these illegal disclosures and about concerns and risks to individuals," she said.

The New York Times reported that the latest dump of 133,887 confidential and secret documents included many containing the names of sensitive sources who could be at risk of reprisals if they were known to be talking to US diplomats.

In a message on its Twitter page, however, WikiLeaks said it was "totally false" that any of its "sources have been exposed or will be exposed."

Wikileaks Strikes Again, Dumps Hacked Emails from Global Security Firm Stratfor

Tomorrow morning 25 media organizations across the globe (including Rolling Stone and McClatchy here in America) will publish stories based on a massive cache of emails obtained by Wikileaks. According to a press release on the Wikileaks website, the emails are from the private security firm STRATFOR, which is based in Texas and does contract work for various federal agencies (including the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense) as well as corporate espionage. Here's more from that press release:

The emails show Stratfor’s web of informers, pay-off structure, payment-laundering techniques and psychological methods, for example:

"[Y]ou have to take control of him. Control means financial, sexual or psychological control... This is intended to start our conversation on your next phase" – CEO George Friedman to Stratfor analyst Reva Bhalla on 6 December 2011, on how to exploit an Israeli intelligence informant providing information on the medical condition of the President of Venezuala, Hugo Chavez.

The material contains privileged information about the US government’s attacks against Julian Assange and WikiLeaks and Stratfor’s own attempts to subvert WikiLeaks. There are more than 4,000 emails mentioning WikiLeaks or Julian Assange. The emails also expose the revolving door that operates in private intelligence companies in the United States. Government and diplomatic sources from around the world give Stratfor advance knowledge of global politics and events in exchange for money. The Global Intelligence Files exposes how Stratfor has recruited a global network of informants who are paid via Swiss banks accounts and pre-paid credit cards. Stratfor has a mix of covert and overt informants, which includes government employees, embassy staff and journalists around the world.

The material shows how a private intelligence agency works, and how they target individuals for their corporate and government clients. For example, Stratfor monitored and analysed the online activities of Bhopal activists, including the "Yes Men", for the US chemical giant Dow Chemical. The activists seek redress for the 1984 Dow Chemical/Union Carbide gas disaster in Bhopal, India. The disaster led to thousands of deaths, injuries in more than half a million people, and lasting environmental damage.

Stratfor has realised that its routine use of secret cash bribes to get information from insiders is risky. In August 2011, Stratfor CEO George Friedman confidentially told his employees: "We are retaining a law firm to create a policy for Stratfor on the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. I don’t plan to do the perp walk and I don’t want anyone here doing it either."

Stratfor’s use of insiders for intelligence soon turned into a money-making scheme of questionable legality. The emails show that in 2009 then-Goldman Sachs Managing Director Shea Morenz and Stratfor CEO George Friedman hatched an idea to "utilise the intelligence" it was pulling in from its insider network to start up a captive strategic investment fund. CEO George Friedman explained in a confidential August 2011 document, marked DO NOT SHARE OR DISCUSS: "What StratCap will do is use our Stratfor’s intelligence and analysis to trade in a range of geopolitical instruments, particularly government bonds, currencies and the like". The emails show that in 2011 Goldman Sach’s Morenz invested "substantially" more than $4million and joined Stratfor’s board of directors. Throughout 2011, a complex offshore share structure extending as far as South Africa was erected, designed to make StratCap appear to be legally independent. But, confidentially, Friedman told StratFor staff: "Do not think of StratCap as an outside organisation. It will be integral... It will be useful to you if, for the sake of convenience, you think of it as another aspect of Stratfor and Shea as another executive in Stratfor... we are already working on mock portfolios and trades". StratCap is due to launch in 2012.

The Stratfor emails reveal a company that cultivates close ties with US government agencies and employs former US government staff. It is preparing the 3-year Forecast for the Commandant of the US Marine Corps, and it trains US marines and "other government intelligence agencies" in "becoming government Stratfors". Stratfor’s Vice-President for Intelligence, Fred Burton, was formerly a special agent with the US State Department’s Diplomatic Security Service and was their Deputy Chief of the counterterrorism division. Despite the governmental ties, Stratfor and similar companies operate in complete secrecy with no political oversight or accountability. Stratfor claims that it operates "without ideology, agenda or national bias", yet the emails reveal private intelligence staff who align themselves closely with US government policies and channel tips to the Mossad – including through an information mule in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, Yossi Melman, who conspired with Guardian journalist David Leigh to secretly, and in violation of WikiLeaks’ contract with the Guardian, move WikiLeaks US diplomatic cables to Israel.

Ironically, considering the present circumstances, Stratfor was trying to get into what it called the leak-focused "gravy train" that sprung up after WikiLeaks’ Afghanistan disclosures:

"[Is it] possible for us to get some of that ’leak-focused’ gravy train? This is an obvious fear sale, so that’s a good thing. And we have something to offer that the IT security companies don’t, mainly our focus on counter-intelligence and surveillance that Fred and Stick know better than anyone on the planet... Could we develop some ideas and procedures on the idea of ´leak-focused’ network security that focuses on preventing one’s own employees from leaking sensitive information... In fact, I’m not so sure this is an IT problem that requires an IT solution."

Like WikiLeaks’ diplomatic cables, much of the significance of the emails will be revealed over the coming weeks, as our coalition and the public search through them and discover connections. Readers will find that whereas large numbers of Stratfor’s subscribers and clients work in the US military and intelligence agencies, Stratfor gave a complimentary membership to the controversial Pakistan general Hamid Gul, former head of Pakistan’s ISI intelligence service, who, according to US diplomatic cables, planned an IED attack on international forces in Afghanistan in 2006. Readers will discover Stratfor’s internal email classification system that codes correspondence according to categories such as ’alpha’, ’tactical’ and ’secure’. The correspondence also contains code names for people of particular interest such as ’Izzies’ (members of Hezbollah), or ’Adogg’ (Mahmoud Ahmedinejad).

Stratfor did secret deals with dozens of media organisations and journalists – from Reuters to the Kiev Post. The list of Stratfor’s "Confederation Partners", whom Stratfor internally referred to as its "Confed Fuck House" are included in the release. While it is acceptable for journalists to swap information or be paid by other media organisations, because Stratfor is a private intelligence organisation that services governments and private clients these relationships are corrupt or corrupting.

STRATFOR recently made headlines when its servers were hacked by Anonymous.

As for the value of the intel: Eamon Javers of ABC News and author of a book on corporate espionage tweets, "This stratfor stuff is incredible. There will be days and days of material out of this email dump by wikileaks." Meanwhile, The Atlantic's international editor Max Fisher tweets, "STRATFOR is a joke and so is wikileaks."
