    Default NFL 2008-2009 Season

Thought I'd go ahead and start the thread for the 2008-2009 NFL season with some rather unsurprising news from the Bengals...

Bengals Cut Henry, Say They'll No Longer Tolerate His Conduct
The Cincinnati Bengals, deciding they have had enough of wide receiver Chris Henry's run-ins with the law, released him on Thursday, hours after he surrendered to police to face assault and criminal damaging charges.

Henry, 24, was being held in the Hamilton County jail, pending a court appearance Thursday, after being charged with misdemeanor assault and criminal damaging. He is accused of punching an 18-year-old man in the face and breaking a window in the man's car. A warrant for Henry's arrest was issued Wednesday and he surrendered, a police spokesman said.

"Chris Henry has forfeited his opportunity to pursue a career with the Bengals. His conduct can no longer be tolerated," Bengals president Mike Brown said in a statement.

Henry, arrested five times since December 2005, was suspended by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for the first half of last season for repeatedly violating the league's conduct policy.

"The Bengals tried for an extended period of time to support Chris and his potentially bright career. We had hoped to guide him toward an appropriate standard of personal responsibility that this community would support and that would allow him to play in the NFL," Brown said. "We acknowledge those fans who had concerns about Chris; at the same time we tried to help a young man.

"But those efforts end today, as we move on with what is best for our team."

Court records do not indicate if Henry has hired an attorney in the new case.

The player's agent, Marvin Frazier, said Henry gave him a different version of events but declined to elaborate.

"I was told it didn't happen that way," Frazier said.

According to an affidavit filed in Hamilton County, Henry was identified by Gregory Meyer, whose hometown was not listed, and an eyewitness. The eyewitness claimed Henry punched Meyer on Monday, causing "visible injury." Henry then threw a beer bottle at Meyer's car, breaking the rear passenger window, according to the affidavit.

Henry has had a string of problems with police. He most recently was in court last week after being ticketed for driving with expired Kentucky license plates. He paid $149, according to the Hamilton County Municipal Court records.

Henry also pleaded guilty to letting minors drink alcohol in a hotel room he had rented. He served two days in a northern Kentucky jail.
Again, not really surprised this is happening. As hard as it is to see the Bengals lose such a talented player especially when they need all the talent they can get, I support them doing this. I also wouldn't be surprised to see Goodell toss him from the league given his ample number of chances. His talent is constantly being overshadowed by his misconduct and that is not conducive to a well oiled machine, it's more like having a gear with a few broken teeth. It is really too bad to see such a talented guy throw it all away just so he can go out and "have some fun".

Nor am I surprised that Chad Johnson thinks it is a bad move. Afterall, he is much more suited to run a franchise than those that do it in this multi-billion dollar industry, right?

The Bengals made the right move. There's no room on a team for criminals and spoiled brats. And there's no room in the average NFL fan's heart for such non-sense. The Steelers also did the same thing with receiver Cedrick Wilson.

I can only hope we see enough of this happen to wake these kids up and get them to take this seriously.

    2008 NFL Schedule
The NFL announced Tuesday its 17-week, 256-game regular-season schedule for 2008, which kicks off on Thursday night, Sept. 4 and concludes on Sunday, Dec. 28.

The season begins with the NFL's annual Thursday primetime kickoff game. This year the opener on Sept. 4 on NBC (7 p.m. ET) features the Super Bowl XLII champion New York Giants at home against the NFC East Division-rival Washington Redskins.

Super Bowl XLIII -- concluding the season-long theme of "Believe In Now" -- will be played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida on February 1, 2009.

Two of the highlights in a season sure to have many will come in late October and early December when the NFL continues its international series of regular-season games. On Oct. 26 at Wembley Stadium in London, England, the New Orleans Saints will host the San Diego Chargers. Last Oct. 28, the eventual Super Bowl-champion Giants defeated the Miami Dolphins 13-10 at a sold-out Wembley (81,176) in the NFL's first regular-season game overseas. Then on Dec. 7, the NFL will venture north to Canada when the Buffalo Bills host the Dolphins in Toronto at the Rogers Centre.

Thanks for the schedule Ryan. That's fantastic.

I'm certainly looking forward to the Steelers stomping the life out of the Bengals twice this year. (no way your team goes to the playoffs with CJ doing what he's doing).

This is likely to be the case...

Between losing Chris Henry and CJ acting like Corey Dillon 2, it doesn't look all that good for the Bengals (especially the Offense) this upcoming season. I hope I'm wrong though.

    http://www.bengals.com/news/news.asp?story_id=6849

Less than a week after offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski called him "rusty," wide receiver Chad Johnson has taken it with the heart that made him a five-time Pro Bowler and not the frustration of a trade demand that has now ceased with training camp about five weeks away.
And, no, he said Thursday, it wasn't about the money.
"But I could use a little extra for gas," he said.
Johnson says after a "wonderful" conversation with quarterback Carson Palmer at last week's minicamp, the two are prepared to fuel up like they connected before last season's balky 7-9 run.
"He looked at film and looked at the things we missed on from Week 1 to Week 16 and he said 1,800 (yards) was reachable if we're perfect," Johnson said. "Of course, Carson and I were off on plays we usually clicked. We left a lot of plays on the field. We talked about what he and I need to do starting in July. We have a lot of work to do."

    Johnson
Contacted by Bengals.com the day after he had arthroscopic surgery to remove "loose bodies" in his right ankle, Johnson said he plans to be ready to run the second week of July with fellow Bengals receivers T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Antonio Chatman, Jerome Simpson and Andre Caldwell at a Los Angeles passing camp run by Chad mentor Charles Collins in which Palmer is slated to be one of the throwers.
Johnson seems to be categorizing his priorities these days, moving from the textbook trade-me-or-retire-rant to the analytical playbook phase.
"Come on," he said. "Did you really think I wouldn't come?"
With his trade calls unheeded and his ankle gimpy, Johnson sounds like he's immersing himself in football again after a curious season he broke his own franchise record for receiving yards with 1,440 in a year he says he was "horrible."
He even likes the defense after questioning the organization's efforts to upgrade the unit in one of his rants.
"The defense is the reason I (had the surgery)," said Johnson after it knocked him around a little last weekend. "They were good from what I saw. I liked the aggressiveness. Keith Rivers is nice. It looked really good."
Johnson says he held off on getting surgery the club recommended after last season because he's afraid it will lead to a setback despite advice from his agents and the club's front office.
"I just didn't want to go messing with anything because, knock on wood, I've been so healthy," said Johnson, who has played in 103 straight games since missing four with a broken shoulder as a rookie. "Everybody's been on me. Drew (Rosenhaus). Mike (Brown). Troy and Katie (Blackburn)."
But Johnson said he knew he had to get in gear after getting roughed up by cornerbacks Johnathan Joseph and Leon Hall on Saturday, the one minicamp workout he went full go.
"On one leg I should be able to beat anybody," Johnson said. "They were able to put hands on me, which I don't like. Usually I can do stuff to dodge and get away. Leon hit me in the throat and J-Joe embarrassed me on a dig (route) knocking the ball down."
Unlike the offseason scope of his left ankle a few years ago, doctors took out bone spurs this time and while that offers some more pain, the recovery is expected to be close to the last one that put him on the field in two weeks.
"I'm good," he said of his mind frame. "But this is just scaring me right now."
One of the casualties of Johnson's cable television Trade Crusade looked to be his relationship with Palmer. After Palmer said he expected Johnson at all mandatory events, Johnson jumped him on ESPN.com and told him to mind his own business.
But Johnson knows he and Palmer are in the same business. Bengals Passing Inc. He said they spent one period of practice last weekend discussing the need to make their timing better than last season.
"We were missing last year on stuff we've been doing in our sleep," Johnson said. "My best route since I came into the league is the 16- to 20-yard dig route over the middle and we kept missing on it.
"I wasn't right. I wasn't technical enough. Nowhere near as sound as I have been. For what a (multi) Pro Bowl veteran should be. I was very inconsistent."
Johnson, who has worn his heart on his sleeve for all seven years and 103 games he has become the Bengals all-time leading receiver, continues to be in uniform. On Thursday he severely upbraided himself out loud for his overall play last year.
"I played very poorly. Coach Brat is probably the only person who can get in my face and tell me that. Or Carson," Johnson said.
"I look at it and say, 'Damn, I did this. I did that,' " he said. "But that's not what he's looking for. He's not looking at the numbers. He's looking at the times I was inconsistent. Even if I do mess up, I should be able to make a play. But I couldn't with the screwups I was making."
No one has ever dissed Johnson's work ethic. He doesn't know the whys of the miscues, but he said, "All the time we work in practice ... we're just going to have to do more.
"What we have to fix is so small, so minor. It's not the big things, it's the little things."
Johnson also talked about some big things Thursday:
    • Johnson reiterated, "I love you, Cincinnati," and said he realizes there are fans that have turned against him while recalling Kobe Bryant got booed in the first game of what turned out to be an NBA MVP season following his trade demands of last summer.
But Johnson said Thursday that he hopes his fans here understand the trade tirades had nothing to do with his feelings for them and it was venting from a 7-9 season and what he felt was a lack of attention to upgrading the defense. What he called "in-house" criticism also set him off. He doesn't think he had a good year ("I set a high standard," he says), but he also knows he's not the only one.
"I love them. I hope they understand it's just business," Johnson said. "I felt in that three-month period the best thing for me was to get out of Cincinnati. I was just going through some things and I thought it was the best move for me. Obviously not. I'm still here. Yeah, it was the losing. It got on my nerves.
"I did everything under the sun to get out of here. I acted psycho. I posed my case. I talked with my owner, who loves me dearly. He must. Those offers were unheard of. And he still said no. Really, I'm not that good."
Bengals president Mike Brown informed Johnson that he was going nowhere because the club didn't believe it could immediately replace the value of a four-time AFC receiving yardage champion. That included Washington's offer of what amounted to two first-round draft picks. Plus, the Bengals didn't want to deal with salary cap acceleration.
    • Johnson maintained he has a good relationship with Brown, said he believes he wants to win, and appreciates how the team has ripped up his contracts twice.
But he also wants an NFL title.
"The time is coming when I'm done. I'm up. I'll say anything to get a ring," Johnson said. "The window of opportunity is getting smaller."
Asked if people would consider that a selfish statement, Johnson said, "You know what? I'm a part of that (team) window, too. I see us looking at the things we need to do. I felt we weren't doing it and needed to be addressing it more. ... (My desire for) winning gets knocked off because of the way I play the game. People think all I want to do is talk and celebrate and 'He's a me-first guy.' I want a ring. What else can I do?"
Johnson said the Bengals "have done things for me that have never really been done before. Like tearing me up (his contract) with four years left and re-doing me the first time. I've also done well by them, also."
    • Johnson said the offseason wasn't about money and he felt "it was funny" that people said it was even though he claims it was his bid to get to a winner. "We have a bigger issue here. Money will take care of itself," said Johnson, who has a contract here through 2011. "If I go out and continue to be way above here, then it's going to have to happen."

What is going to happen, for now, is that Johnson is going to try and get that ring now wearing stripes.
"We're going to be in Tampa," he said. The football phase has officially begun.
Maybe CJ has a chance after all. If he's being honest here I raise the Bengals chances by 20% more than where it was before.

Interesting piece. I hope CJ is done with his temper tantrum, has grown up, and realized that at the end of the day, he is only getting paid to play a game and entertain people. No more and no less.

This is the God's honest truth and it was painfully obvious to anyone watching.

This I did not know. That is a pretty substantial offer. But, assuming CJ is going to act like an adult, I'm glad they turned it down.

I sure hope he is. It would be sad to see yet another talented Bengal player piss away opportunity because of their selfishness.

He's wanting a ring as his time winds down. I don't blame him but at the same time that agent of his made him hated more than loved overall. I don't like Rosenthall much. He is the common link in all the cry baby players like T.O.

Our division is going to be tough this year. The Ravens aren't much of a concern but I think the other three are going to be epic games to watch whenever they meet. Should be exciting. I still see Cincy being 3rd but it'll be close. Not like years past where first was way ahead of the others. This will be like one or two games out from first I'm thinking for the Bengals. Maybe three, but I doubt much more unless they just fall apart.

Does anybody here play Fantasy Football?

I must warn you that I won two out of three Superbowls last year (I played in three leagues). I am a bad man. Chuck Knoll aint got nuttin' on me. Don't let me get the first pick. It will be over for you. Give me LT and the league will be a snore with me running away with it all.

Also, I am a highly noted smack talker. One year, I named my team 'with other peoples balls'. That way when someone asked my opponent who they were playing this week, they had to answer 'I am playing with other peoples balls'.

We should start a league so I can grind you into the dirt like slimy little rodents.

Won't be LT's year this year. Gonna be a rookie that takes it I think. Or the Vike's RB.

I write articles and prognostications for this thread each year, but I'm afraid I don't play fantasy football. Sorry buddy. Hopefully others do though.

    Default Re: NFL 2008-2009 Season

I was born near Baltimore and raised in Indiana. I started with the Colts and I will finish with the Colts. I went through some tuff years, but things have been a lot better since Manning came to town. I love the Dungy/Manning combo. Colts needed some defense to win it all. Dungy gave the Colts just that. Manning will score points and Dungy can build a D and I think we will have a shot as long as we stay healthy.

I am still hurtin from that loss against the Steelers in the AFC Championship when we had Jim Harbough. I thought for sure we were going to win that game. AAARRRRG!! I still get made when I think about that drop in the end zone at the end of the game.

I could see the kid from the Vikings doing well this year. But my money is going to stay on LT until he tanks. Even when LT has been banged up with injuries, he still puts up all star numbers. He is a threat to score every game. And as long as he can do that, I will pick him over anyone. I have had LT and if I can nab two decent guys on my next two picks, I will win. Usually I can. Although, I went with Drew Brees as my QB on one of my teams last year. He gave me a real slow start, but picked up towards the end of the season. He almost cost me, but I had LT and you can't stop him. You can only hope to contain him.

Have you ever tried Fantasy Football? It changed the way I look at the NFL. I used to be a die hard Colt fan even when they sucked. Well, the NFL can suck when your team is getting the smack down every week. So, my firends and I started playing Fantasy Football and it changed the way I watched games. What players did on the field had meaning for me. I started to care about what position players were doing on and off the field. I started getting into what was going on with draft choices and trades for every team during the offseason. If you follow football, I have to say you will like it. We started back before it was calculated on computers. We did it all by hand back in the day. We used to get together, drink beers, eat, and draft players. Now, we do it online and it aint as fun drinkin' beer in front of your computer by yourself. :-) But it is still fun as hell to play. Especially when you win. The year before last was my best year. I took home close to a thousand dollars. So, it aint all fun and games too. You can make some beer money to support your hobby. :-) If you have some Chuck Knoll or Vince Limbardi in you.

Kiel, who played three years for the Chargers, dies in accident

SAN DIEGO -- Former Chargers safety Terrence Kiel was killed after he was thrown from a Chevy sedan he was driving, police said Saturday.
Kiel, 27, was driving alone after leaving a party at about 10:15 Friday night when he hit a wall in San Diego's upscale Scripps Ranch neighborhood and was thrown from the car, police Sgt. Alan Hayward said.
Kiel was barely breathing when paramedics reached him and he died about an hour later, Hayward said.
    Brian Bahr / Getty Images
Terrence Kiel played for the Chargers from 2003 to 2006.

Friends had tried to keep Kiel from driving home from the party, Hayward said, and witnesses told police he appeared to be driving in the wrong direction when he crashed.
Police would not know whether Kiel had been under the influence of drugs or alcohol until toxicology tests were performed, Hayward said.
A second-round draft pick out of Texas A&M in 2003, Kiel played four years in the NFL from 2003-2006, all with the Chargers. He grew up in Lufkin, Texas.
In February 2007 he pleaded guilty to felony and misdemeanor drug charges for shipping prescription cough syrup to Texas, the most significant of several scrapes with the law.
He was released by the team after his plea.
Kiel had been led off the practice field and arrested in the locker room by Drug Enforcement Administration agents in September 2006, suspected of shipping at least two parcels of prescription cough syrup, apparently to be mixed with soft drinks to make a concoction known as "lean."
The felony charges were later dropped after he completed community service, and he was serving three years probation for the misdemeanor charges.
He was cited for urinating in public outside a San Diego nightclub in January 2007, but the city dropped that charge.

Rush To NFL Judgment: Limbaugh Interested In The Rams
Talk show host Rush Limbaugh would be an interested party if the St. Louis Rams were to come up for sale. "The Rams would be a great team to have," Limbaugh told the St. Louis Business Journal last week. "I have a lot of friends in ownership in the NFL, and my desire to get involved has not been a secret."

Limbaugh, who has an eight-year deal with Premiere Radio Network and has an estimated worth of $300 million, grew up in Cape Girardeau, Mo. (Photo by Gary He, AP)
Even with his wealth, Limbaugh knows that he would have to be creative with money to get the team.

"I have no debt whatsoever. This would require changing that," he said adding that owning a pro franchise has become a "billionaires' club."

Limbaugh's last connection to the NFL was when he was a commentator for ESPN. It was short-lived job as he resigned after making comments about Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb that some thought were racist.
The team is not currently for sale. However, owner Georgia Frontiere died earlier this year and her children have become majority owners.
Chip Rosenbloom said earlier this month that despite hiring a firm that specializes in sports investments, he is not considering putting the team on the market. However....
"It's the same as it's been," Rosenbloom told the St. Louis Dispatch. "If the right person at the time right time with the right price came, I suppose that you might sell your house, right? So, I don't say never. ... If we get a phone call today from somebody who says the right things, we would listen."
Fans at clanram.com are filling message boards with their comments on the conservative radio host becoming a team owner. They seem to care less for Limbaugh's political leanings than they do for his commitment to winning. Click here for their comments.

The won their pre-season game against on Monday 20-17!

Unfortunately, though I was able to watch some of it, I had to listen to most of it on Sirius radio since I was out working.

I just watched what must have been one of the Bengals' worst performances in quite a while. Almost like it was the 1990s again...

O-Line gives Palmer no time to pass. Offense can't sync up. Defense still giving too much room. Defense asleep.

And all of this against a rookie QB making his NFL debut! Simply unbelievable.

The only highlight of the game was Johnathan Joseph's fumble recovery and 65 yard run for a TD.

This was the first game that counts and the Bengals looked like utter garbage. I still think Bratkowski should have been fired along with Breshnehan. And honestly, if Marvin Lewis doesn't get this team turned around and work better with the talent he does have, I think he should be fired as well. I've been a defender of his but he's been on long enough and had plenty of chances and the best we get is 1 damn winning season?!?

I have a bad feeling it is going to be a long, rocky season.

Bengals are really sucking this year. Need a complete overhaul of the coaching staff and receiver corps. But then that's always been my opinion of Lewis' team. Carson Palmer is a franchise QB and he can't carry this team on his shoulders. He'll end up like Marino or worse in the end if they don't wake up.

The Steelers had an easy start with two nice wins to put them at the top of the division but they beat Cleveland which was better last year. And Houston which seems to only be able to beat their division mates. Pittsburgh's real test will be Monday night when they face Philly and a renewed McNabb.

BINGO! I was thinking of something like that but couldn't put my finger on it. That is exactly it though.

An excellent QB that will never end up with a Super Bowl win despite his skills.

Shaun Rogers of the Browns stated right before the Steelers game that their defense would be delivering late and punishing hits to QBs this season. Something to watch out for when you face them Sunday after the coming one. They didn't draw a flag for doing exactly that to Big Ben and the Steelers had to send in a tape of it to the League. I'm expecting a full on fight between the Bengals and the Browns due to their standing in the division right now.

WOOOO! 0-5 BABY! We are SO going to nail that top draft pick!

    BENGALS FANS CELEBRATE!

Honestly though... I'm not sure why I bother watching each week. Maybe it is because so often they come so close to winning that you think they could pull it off and then when they don't you say, "Well, they were so close this time. Maybe next week." Then again, maybe I'm just crazy.
