Mexican Cartel ‘Coyotes’ Threaten Texans 80 Miles Past Border, Says Victim

A resident of a Texas community located about 80 miles from the Mexican border says cartel-connected human smugglers threaten people who live around their paths. The “coyotes” utilize this area to force migrants on dangerous marches around the Falfurrias Border Patrol Checkpoint. Hundreds died in this area over the past several years, county officials say.

“Whoever tells you there is no danger out here and we don’t need the wall, they have no idea what they’re talking about,” a woman identified only as “Solia” told a KVEO reporter. “They don’t care as long as the businesses keep thriving in McAllen or Brownsville.”

The Encino resident says she can no longer go out of her home without a gun because of the treats from human smugglers. “Solia” says the border wall is “needed to protect U.S. citizens.”
For more than a decade, Brooks County Sheriff Benny Martinez and local Border Patrol agents assigned to the Falfurrias Station have dealt with smugglers marching their “human cargo” through the dangerous ranchlands surrounding the checkpoint.

“U.S. Border Patrol agents operate an immigration checkpoint in the middle of our county,” Sheriff Martinez told Breitbart News in a January interview. “You can’t drive from the county’s south side to the north side without going through this checkpoint. Consequently, human smugglers who have no regard for the health or safety of these migrants march them through very dangerous ranchlands in order to bypass the checkpoint.”

“Solia” told the KVEO reporter the problem is getting worse in recent months as the massive influx of Central American migrants overwhelmed Rio Grande Valley Border Patrol officials.

“Huge groups and we’re not talking 10 or 15, we’re talking about 40, 70 and the last few months it’s getting worse,” the woman stated. “They really need to go after the coyotes. We have seen so many abandoned families, women with children just left out there. These people are not educated, they don’t know east or west they don’t know where the sun rises and sets, you ask them ‘Have you ever seen a map of Texas?’ They don’t even know how big Texas is.”

She said she and her neighbors live in fear every day from the criminal organizations operating in the area.

“12 young men dressed in black. My husband automatically stopped and they just put a finger to their lips and it’s like…

You better not say anything, they know what we drive, they know where we live,” she explained. “There was a young man, he [her husband] kept telling him to stop right at the gate, he kept coming. My husband cocked the gun and right on his left-hand side, 12-15 more people pop out, they were trying to get in towards the house.”

Breitbart News heard directly from migrants being smuggled through this area in past visits to Brooks County. The migrants are told that Houston is just a few miles up the road and they need to walk through these ranches to get around the checkpoint.

“Solia” told KVEO she heard similar remarks from the migrants. She told the reporter that hundreds of migrants walk down her street after being dropped off by human smugglers and told that “Houston is just up the street.”

She concluded the interview saying that everyone in her neighborhood is afraid to call Border Patrol because of the threats they receive from the smugglers.

Thousands more Central American migrants approach U.S.-Mexico border

DNC blasts Trump's 'cruel and unconstitutional agenda' at the southern border

A statement released by the Democratic National Committee amid the immigration battle says the president is not working to address the root causes of the humanitarian crisis.

Thousands more migrants are heading toward the U.S.-Mexican border, hoping to gain permanent residency here even as the Trump administration tightens rules on detention and obtaining political asylum.

Some 2,000 migrants arrived in Mexico this week, forcing officials of Chiapas state to declare an emergency. 5,000 more migrants had set out toward the U.S. on Monday, according to the Mexico News Daily.

Meanwhile, "Pueblos Sin Frontreras," a group often cited as being behind the caravans since last year, denied on its Facebook page in a post on Tuesday that it is organizing the large groups and leading them on the long journey to the U.S. border from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala.

“Nonetheless, as defenders of human rights of the migrants," the group wrote, "we are in solidarity with the families, children, men and women that see as their only option to flee their communities and migrate.”

Pueblos Sin Frontreras assailed Mexican authorities for what the group says is their failure to honor previous promises to treat the migrants humanely by giving them visitor visas on humanitarian grounds, and are instead adopting a hard line to keep them from getting close to the United States.

BORDER PATROL OFFICIAL: CARAVAN-SIZE INFLUX OF MIGRANTS ARRIVING EVERY WEEK IN RIO GRANDE VALLEY

“Mexico is acquiescing to the U.S. and handling this in a law enforcement, rather than humanitarian, manner,” the group said.

Calls to Pueblos Sin Frontreras seeking comment were not returned.

Tensions have flared between the migrants and authorities in countries they pass through, including Mexico.

Central American migrants, part of a caravan hoping to reach the U.S. border, walk on the shoulder of a road in Frontera Hidalgo, Mexico on Friday. The group pushed past police guarding the bridge and joined a larger group of about 2,000 migrants who are walking toward Tapachula, the latest caravan to enter Mexico. (AP)

This week, they tried to push past police, who urged them to stay in makeshift shelters. Officials also told people to stay indoors, warning the migrants were a threat to safety. The town’s cold reception contrasts with the warm welcome it gave to caravans just last year.

More than 7,000 migrants are in Chiapas, according to Mexico News Daily, waiting to receive documents that would allow them to work and live there while they try to apply for asylum in the United States.

President Donald Trump has called the large numbers of migrants approaching the border an emergency, and has pushed the construction of a wall. U.S. Attorney General William Barr decided Tuesday that asylum seekers who clear a “credible fear” interview and are facing removal don’t have the right to be released on bond by an immigration court judge while their cases are pending. The attorney general has the authority to overturn prior rulings made by immigration courts, which fall under the Justice Department.

Trump also warned Mexico to step up efforts to deal with the groups of migrants trying to get to the U.S., or risk U.S. tariffs on auto imports.

Armed Mexican Soldiers Disarm, Question U.S. Soldiers on Texas Side of Border

    BOB PRICE 20 Apr 2019

A group of armed Mexican soldiers detained and disarmed a pair of U.S. soldiers on the U.S. side of the Texas border with Mexico. The U.S. soldiers were eventually released and their weapons returned.

A group of five to six Mexican soldiers approached two U.S. soldiers along the border near Clint, Texas, on April 13. “The U.S. soldiers were appropriately in U.S. territory,” officials with U.S. Northern Command told CNN. The U.S. soldiers were reportedly carrying out border support operations “in an unmarked (U.S. Customs and Border Protection) vehicle,” the news outlet reported.

Officials said the Mexican soldiers pointed their weapons at the U.S. troops and removed a sidearm from one of the soldier’s belt. The Mexican soldier reportedly placed the handgun in the CBP vehicle.

An official from Northern Command stated the Mexican soldiers were armed with “what appeared to be assault rifles,” CNN reported. They said the U.S. soldiers allowed the weapon to be taken in an “attempt to de-escalate a potentially volatile situation.”

CNN reported that one of the U.S. soldiers explained, in Spanish, to the Mexican soldiers that while they were south of the border fence, they were still on U.S. soil. The Mexican soldiers eventually released the U.S. soldiers and both sides promised to de-conflict in the future, officials stated.

Border barriers are frequently not built on the borderline but some distance into U.S. soil. Officials said that in this particular area the brush-filled dried out riverbed makes it “very easy” for people to be confused about exactly where the official international boundary is.

CBP officials confirmed that the Mexican soldiers believed the U.S. soldiers were on the south side of the border while Northen Command officials maintained that the U.S. troops were on American soil.

“Though they were south of the border fence, US soldiers remained in US territory, north of the actual border,” the statement concluded. “After a brief discussion between the soldiers from the two nations, the Mexican military members departed the area.”

Mexican troops drew weapons on American soldiers on US side of the border

Mexican troops questioned two U.S. soldiers along the two countries' border earlier this month. The American soldiers were on the U.S. side of the border conducting a routine surveillance operation, defense officials say.

Military officials from the U.S. Northern Command said that "five to six Mexican military personnel questioned two U.S. Army soldiers who were conducting border support operations."

The soldiers were in an unmarked Customs and Border Protection vehicle near the southwest border in the vicinity of Clint, Texas.

Officials confirmed that the Mexican troops were armed with what seemed to be assault riffles. They drew their weapons when they saw the two U.S. soldiers and ordered the U.S. troops to return their weapons to a military vehicle. According to officials, the two Americans obliged "in an attempt to de-escalate a potential volatile situation."

"Throughout the incident, the U.S. soldiers followed all established procedures and protocols," Northern Command said in a statement.

While the two U.S. troops were on the south side of the security perimeter, officials say that they were still north of the Rio Grande and thus were firmly inside American territory. After the incident, military and Department of Homeland Security officials sent an inquiry to the Mexican government demanding an explanation.

"An inquiry by CBP and DOD revealed that the Mexican military members believed that the US Army soldiers were south of the border," said Northern Command, referring to Customs and Border Protection and the Department of Defense.

"Though they were south of the border fence, U.S. soldiers remained in U.S. territory, north of the actual border," the statement said, adding that "after a brief discussion between the soldiers from the two nations, the Mexican military members departed the area."

FBI Arrests New Mexico Border Militia Leader Larry Mitchell Hopkins

The FBI arrested a 69-year-old New Mexico man who allegedly illegally detained immigrants crossing the border under the guise of working for the United States Border Patrol.

Larry Mitchell Hopkins, who runs The United Constitutional Patriots (UCP), an armed border militia group that spreads far-right conspiracies and rounds up asylum seekers on the border, was arrested by FBI in New Mexico Saturday on charges of possessing firearms and ammunition as a convicted felon.

Recent video footage released by UCP shows two members holding what appear to be semi-automatic rifles near immigrants, many of them children.
The group also peddles conspiracy theories and produces a radio show where members spread information about QAnon, and accuse migrants of associating with ISIS. Hopkins has also claimed that president Trump has personally asked him about ‘Muslim immigration.’

UCP and Hopkins claim to work with Border Patrol, which has publicly denied doing so. Border Patrol agents sometimes appear in the periphery of the groups videos, which show camo-clad UCP members interacting with migrants at the southern border.

“There’s no question about whether or not we work with Border Patrol,” said Jim, a UCP spokesperson who declined to give his last name. “That’s all documented, and not just once. It’s documented hundreds and hundreds of times over in the videos that I post.”

“U.S. Customs and Border Protection does not endorse private groups or organizations taking enforcement matters into their own hands,” a Border Patrol official told The Daily Beast.

Border Patrol is not supposed to interact with border vigilantes, but has been documented doing so. A Mother Jones reporter who embedded with a border militia in 2016 witnessed the group getting information from Border Patrol agents.

UCP is only one of several vigilante groups patrolling the southern border with guns.

New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas issued a statement on Saturday, praising the FBI over Hopkins' arrest.

“This is a dangerous felon who should not have weapons around children and families,” Balderas wrote in a statement. “Today's arrest by the FBI indicates clearly that the rule of law should be in the hands of trained law enforcement officials, not armed vigilantes.”

Hopkins, of Flora Vista, N.M., is expected to have an initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Las Cruces, New Mexico on Monday. Federal authorities said they would not released additional details about Hopkins’ arrest until after the appearance.

The arrest was the latest fallout for the group. On Friday, the UCP Facebook group announced to its members that they no longer accept donations through PayPal, as the service has suspended their account.

“TO ALL PATRIOTS, I wish to thank all of you that has donated to the Border Ops mission up till now. We can no longer accept payments thru PAYPAL, they have permanently suspended our account,” the post read. “... And is hold $1300.00 in donations for 180 days. I am looking for another outfit that we can go thru.”

PayPal and GoFundMe announced Friday that they would no longer allow UCP to raise funds on their platforms.

A PayPal spokesperson told BuzzFeed News in a statement that UCP had been banned from their platform following a video that shows the group rounding up nearly 200 migrants.

“The account associated with United Constitutional Patriots has been closed due to a violation of our Acceptable Use Policy,” the spokesperson told BuzzFeed News. “We do not allow PayPal services to be used to promote hate, violence, or other forms of intolerance that is discriminatory.”

FBI arrests leader of armed group stopping migrants in New Mexico

    April 20, 2019 / 5:47 PM / Updated 5 hours ago

TAOS, N.M. (Reuters) - The FBI on Saturday said it had arrested Larry Hopkins, the leader of an armed group that is stopping undocumented migrants after they cross the U.S.-Mexico border into New Mexico.

The arrest came two days after the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) accused the group of illegally detaining migrants and New Mexico’s Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham ordered an investigation.

Hopkins, 69, also known as Johnny Horton, was arrested in Sunland Park, New Mexico, on a federal complaint charging him with being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said in a statement.

“We’re not worried about it, he’s going to be cleared,” said Jim Benvie, a spokesman for the United Constitutional Patriots (UCP), blaming his arrest on political pressure from Lujan Grisham.

Hopkins is the “national commander” of the UCP, which has had around half a dozen members camped out on a rotating basis near Sunland Park since late February.

    PATRIOTS OR FASCISTS?

The UCP describes itself as a “patriot group” helping U.S. Border Patrol cope with record numbers of Central American families crossing the border to seek asylum.

Dressed in camouflage and carrying rifles, UCP members have helped U.S. Border Patrol detain over 5,600 migrants in the last two months, Benvie said. Videos posted online by the group show members telling migrants to stop, sit down, and wait for agents to arrive. Critics accuse the UCP of impersonating law enforcement.

Crowdfunding sites PayPal and GoFundMe on Friday barred the group, citing policies not to promote hate or violence, after the ACLU called the UCP a “fascist militia.”

“Today’s arrest by the FBI indicates clearly that the rule of law should be in the hands of trained law enforcement officials, not armed vigilantes,” New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas said in a statement of Hopkins’s arrest.

Hopkins was previously arrested in Oregon in 2006 on suspicion of impersonating a police officer and being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

    NO STANDOFFS

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said in a statement it did not support citizens taking law enforcement into their own hands and instead encouraged the public to be its eyes and ears on the border.

Benvie said the UCP was doing just that and had the support of local Border Patrol and police.

Mostly military veterans, UCP members carry weapons for self defense and at no time pointed guns at migrants, as they have been accused of, Benvie said.

Despite having funding sources cut off, Benvie said the group’s online support had swelled since it came under attack this week. Its Facebook followers have more than doubled since Thursday.

Asked what the group would do if told to leave by state police, Benvie said they would probably go and, if they felt the order violated their constitutional rights, sue the state of New Mexico.

“There’s not going to be any standoffs, this isn’t the Bundy Ranch,” Benvie said, in reference to a 2014 armed confrontation in Nevada.

So they sent a 69 year old militia leader detaining illegals and possibly interfering with cartel border activity into the general gang population of prison where he gets his ribs broken. Remnants of Obama's FBI just never stop giving during Trump's Administration.

FBI's Arrested Militia Leader Larry Hopkins is Attacked in Jail -Attorney

    by Reuters
    Wednesday, 24 April 2019 12:25 GMT

SUNLAND PARK, N.M., April 24 (Reuters) - The leader of an armed militia group that spent the past two months detaining migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border has been hospitalized after he was attacked in the prison where he was awaiting trial on federal firearms charges, his attorney said.

Larry Hopkins, 69, was in hospital with broken ribs after being attacked on Tuesday at the Dona Ana County Detention Center in Las Cruces, in southern New Mexico, attorney Kelly O'Connell said.

A spokeswoman for the Dona Ana County center could not be reached for immediate comment early on Wednesday.

The FBI on Saturday arrested Hopkins, leader of the United Constitutional Patriots group, on charges of being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition dating back to a 2017 investigation.

His UCP group on Tuesday abandoned the camp in the New Mexico desert where they had spent two months detaining thousands of illegal migrants. The departure came after state officials and civil liberties groups accused them of violating migrants' rights and the owner of the property where they were camped ordered them out.

O'Connell said he had spoken with Hopkins by phone.

"This guy is very high profile. So, if he gets put into jail and is immediately attacked after his first hearing just a few days after being put in there, can Dona Ana County correctional protect high profile defendants?" O'Connell asked.

O'Connell said he would ask officials about their plans to ensure his client's safety at his next scheduled court hearing on April 29 in Albuquerque.

He said he did not know what had provoked the attack. (Additional reporting by Peter Szekely in New York; Editing by Scott Malone and Bernadette Baum)

Donald Trump Challenges Mexico for Disarming National Guard on American Soil

    CHARLIE SPIERING

President Donald Trump reacted to the news Wednesday that Mexican soldiers had detained and disarmed two members of the United States National Guard on American soil.

“Better not happen again!” Trump wrote on Twitter. We are now sending ARMED SOLDIERS to the Border.”

The American soldiers allowed themselves to be disarmed, according to reports, after the Mexican soldiers held them at gunpoint. They were released after the soldiers explained in Spanish that they were still on American soil.

“Though they were south of the border fence, US soldiers remained in US territory, north of the actual border,” CBP officials explained in a statement after the incident. “After a brief discussion between the soldiers from the two nations, the Mexican military members departed the area.”

Trump suggested that Mexico was detaining American troops as a “diversionary tactic” for drug smugglers acting on the border.

“Mexico is not doing nearly enough in apprehending & returning!” he wrote.

Trump also raised the alarm of an enormous caravan of migrants traveling up through Mexico.

“It has been reduced in size by Mexico but is still coming,” he wrote. “Mexico must apprehend the remainder or we will be forced to close that section of the Border & call up the Military. The Coyotes & Cartels have weapons!”

A very big Caravan of over 20,000 people started up through Mexico. It has been reduced in size by Mexico but is still coming. Mexico must apprehend the remainder or we will be forced to close that section of the Border & call up the Military. The Coyotes & Cartels have weapons!

Mexico: 300,000 Migrants Came Through Country First 3 Months of 2019

    PENNY STARR

The Mexican government is reporting that 300,000 migrants from around the globe have traveled through Mexico in the first three months of 2019 to gain entry into the United States at its southern border.

While the majority of the migrants, the Mexican government says, are from Honduras and other countries in Central America, individuals from Cuba, Africa, and southern Asia have also been identified in the migrant caravans.

And Mexico Interior Secretary Olga Sánchez Cordero notes that these migrants want to get into the United States “illegally.”

“It’s estimated that during the first three months of the year, more than 300,000 migrants have transited through Mexico to enter the United States illegally,” Sanchez Cordero says. “There’s a change in the flow of migrants who are entering our country.”

“Sánchez Cordero did not specify how the number of migrants was estimated or how it was determined that they intended to enter the U.S. illegally,” KJZZ, an Arizona public radio station, reports.

But the staggering number of migrants trying to come into the United States is backed up by statistics from Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the federal agency in charge of border security.

In fiscal year 2019 — October, November, December, January, February, and March — CBP reports 361,087 people were apprehended at the border. The apprehensions include Unaccompanied Alien Children (UACs), family units and single adults.

According to CPB’s website, this data was updated on Wednesday, April 24, 2019.

Mexico begins deporting members of migrant caravan after shelter riot

    Griff Jenkins
    Published

TAPACHULA, Mexico -- In a week that has seen the latest migrant caravans largely stalled in southern Mexico, there are further signs that Mexico is honoring a commitment to crack down on those attempting to reach the U.S. border.

On Thursday, Fox News captured video of Mexican officials deporting 93 Cuban migrants by plane.

On Friday, buses carrying 77 Cuban migrants bound for the same trip home departed a government shelter here in Tapachula.

According to the regional director of Mexico’s National Institute of Migration Yadira de Los Santos, there has been a major increase in Cuban migrants in recent months.

Santos said some Cubans have been particularly difficult and started a “riot” Wednesday night inside the shelter, putting themselves and her officers in danger. Some 300 migrants escaped.

But Cuba isn’t the only place where the migrants are surging from.

Fox News got an exclusive look inside another shelter holding individuals and families from as far away as Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Angola, Uganda and Congo.

For migrants who are peaceful and participate fully in the system, many will have a chance for a temporary 20-day visa to give them time to apply for asylum in the US.

A man from Congo whom goes by the name Marcus is one of those migrants -- and he has a message for his fellow migrants.

“We have to enter legally, not illegally, because illegally is bad,” he said.

And there was a message for President Trump, too.

“I want to say to President Trump: help us enter to the United States because it’s going to help our life and it’s going to help us keep our life,” a migrant said.

But farther north, along the U.S.-Mexico border near Eagle Pass, Texas, is a grim reminder of the perils of these migrants’ long journey.

Border Patrol officers recovered the body of a 10-month-old infant who drowned after a raft carrying nine migrants from Honduras capsized in the Rio Grande River.

    Three others remained missing.

Mexico’s President to Donald Trump: America Is for Migrants

Poor people have a right to migrate to the United States, and migrants should not be stopped by force, according to a letter from Mexico’s president to U.S. President Donald Trump.

President López Obrador’s May 30 letter, provided by the Wall Street Journal, claimed a migrant’s “right for justice,” saying:
President Trump. Social problems are not resolved by taxes or coercive measures. How do you transform the country of fraternity for the world’s migrants into a ghetto, a closed space, where migrants are stigmatized, mistreated, persecuted, expelled and the right for justice is canceled to those who tirelessly seek to live free of misery?

The letter also suggested that poor Mexicans have a right to migrate into the United States: “It is worth remembering that, within a short period of time, Mexicans will not need to migrate into the United States and that migration will become optional, not compulsory.”

Al presidente Donald Trump en son de paz. https://t.co/5XdiY7hfeL
    — Andrés Manuel (@lopezobrador_) May 31, 2019
Obrador’s letter did not formally reject or accept Trump’s demand that Mexico block the huge Central American migration into the United States, nor did it directly denounce Trump’s threat to impose rising tariffs on Mexico.

Instead, it repeatedly claimed poor people have a right to move into the United States.

In one section, the letter appropriates the Statue of Liberty as a supposed symbol of legal migration, saying “The Statue of Liberty is not an empty symbol.”

In reality, the statue was built to show other nations how America’s Constitution and culture help create a thriving democracy. Since then, many progressives have tried to argue the status is a symbolic invitation to migrants.

Since 1965, when the nation’s immigration laws were loosened, the U.S. population of Mexican-ancestry citizens and illegal immigrants has exploded to 30 million. That huge population delivers about $30 billion in remittances to Mexico each year.

Obrador also suggested that President Franklin Delano Roosevelt endorsed easy migration:

President Roosevelt was a titan of liberties. He proclaimed the four fundamental rights of humankind before anyone else: the right to freedom of speech, the right to freedom of religion, the right to live free from fear, and the right to live free from misery.

Additionally, Obrador argued that “universal justice” will triumph over national borders, saying:

With all due respect, even though you have the right to express it, the slogan “America First” is a fallacy because until the end of time, even over national borders, universal justice and fraternity will prevail.

Nothing by force, everything by reason and Law!

In the United States, many establishment figures also assert that Americans’ homeland is a nation of and for immigrants, not a homeland for 280 million America-born citizens and their children. In 2018, former GOP Gov. Nikki Haley told an Indian audience, “The one thing about America and what I have always loved is America is a country of immigrants. It’s the fabric of America to have multiple cultures. Multiple populations. Multiple heritages that do come into America that make it what it is.”

The second-ranking Democrat in the Senate, Sen. Dick Durbin declared in February 2018 that “rejecting the notion that we are a nation of immigrants [is] to deny our birthright as a nation … to really defy who we are, what we are and what we will be.” Also, he declared, “We have a diverse nation, and that is our strength as far as I’m concerned.”

Progressives also insist that Americans must not favor their people, children, ideas, and traditions. In November 2014, for example, former President Barack Obama told cheering supporters:

Sometimes we get attached to our particular tribe, our particular race, our particular religion, and then we start treating other folks differently. And that, sometimes, has been a bottleneck to how we think about immigration. If you look at the history of immigration in this country, each successive wave, there have been periods where the folks who were already here suddenly say, ‘Well, I don’t want those folks’ — even though the only people who have the right to say that are some Native Americans.

In contrast, Trump has repeatedly argued that America is for Americans. In his May 30 letter announcing the new tariff threat, he said:

As everyone knows, the United States of America has been invaded by hundreds of thousands of people coming through Mexico and entering our country illegally. This sustained influx of illegal aliens has profound consequences on every aspect of our national life—overwhelming our schools, overcrowding our hospitals, draining our welfare system, and causing untold amounts of crime. Gang members, smugglers, human traffickers, and illegal drugs and narcotics of all kinds are pouring across the Southern Border and directly into our communities. Thousands of innocent lives are taken every year as a result of this lawless chaos. It must end NOW!

The current state of affairs is profoundly unfair to the American taxpayer, who bears the extraordinary financial cost imposed by large-scale illegal migration. Even worse is the terrible and preventable loss of human life. Some of the most deadly and vicious gangs on the planet operate just across our border and terrorize innocent communities.

For years, Mexico has not treated us fairly—but we are now asserting our rights as a sovereign Nation.

The United States is a great country that can no longer be exploited due to its foolish and irresponsible immigration laws. For the sake of our people, and for the sake of our future, these horrendous laws must be changed now.

As President of the United States, my highest duty is the defense of the country and its citizens. A nation without borders is not a nation at all. I will not stand by and allow our sovereignty to be eroded, our laws to be trampled, or our borders to be disrespected anymore.

    Immigration Numbers

Each year, approximately four million young Americans join the workforce after graduating from high school or university.

But the federal government then imports about 1.1 million legal immigrants and refreshes a resident population of roughly 1.5 million white-collar visa workers — including about one million H-1B workers — and approximately 500,000 blue-collar visa workers.

The government also prints out more than one million work permits for foreigners, tolerates about eight million illegal workers, and does not punish companies for employing the hundreds of thousands of illegal migrants who sneak across the border or overstay their legal visas each year.

This policy of inflating the labor supply stimulates economic growth for investors because it ensures that employers do not have to compete for American workers by offering higher wages and better working conditions.

This policy of deflating wages by flooding the market with cheap, foreign, white-collar graduates and blue-collar labor also shifts enormous wealth from young employees towards older investors, even as it also widens wealth gaps, reduces high-tech investment, increases state and local tax burdens, and hurts children’s schools and college educations.

The economic policy also pushes Americans away from high-tech careers and sidelines millions of marginalized Americans, including many who are now struggling with fentanyl addictions. The labor policy furthermore moves business investment and wealth from the Heartland to the coastal cities, explodes rents and housing costs, shrivels real estate values in the Midwest, and rewards investors for creating low-tech, labor-intensive workplaces.

Antifa TERRORISTS Gearing Up for 10-Day Siege on Southern Border, Flyers Show Dead ICE Agents

    July 31, 2019 Dean Garrison

    Wake up NOW America!

This is way out of hand and the mainstream media & leftist politicians continue to protect the growing terrorist faction that calls themselves Antifa.
    Jamie White reports for ********:

Antifa is preparing for a violent 10-day siege on the southern border in El Paso, Texas, in an effort to “shut down” Immigration and Customs Enforcement and open the border to illegals.

Journalist Andy Ngo, who was brutally attacked by Antifa in Portland, Oregon, last month, showed flyers Antifa is using to promote their effort for September, featuring images of ICE agents being murdered with bow and arrows and firebombs while anarchists bomb an ICE facility and southern border wall to let illegals flow into the U.S.

“Antifa is leading a ‘Border Resistance‘ militancy training tour that will converge on a 10-day siege in El Paso, TX,” Ngo tweeted Monday.
“The promotional image shows border enforcement officers being killed & government property fired bombed. Organizers asking for ‘white comrades’ to pay for others.”

It’s good to know that Andy is feeling better and back in the game.

These punks are showing more and more of their true colors every single day.

    The Daily Caller reports:

The far-left Antifa movement is reportedly planning a terror campaign and siege of El Paso, Texas in an attempt to raise awareness of alleged abuses at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The so-called “Border Resistance” exercise involves a “militancy training tour that will converge on a 10-day siege in El Paso, TX,” according to a tweet Monday from reporter Andy Ngo.

The promotional image shows border enforcement officers being killed & government property fire bombed. Organizers are asking for “white comrades to pay for others.”

Ngo was attacked by Antifa members in Portland, Oregon and told his storyMonday to the Daily Caller.

The influx of migrants trying to illegally cross the border has often centered on El Paso, where detention facilities are consistently strained to the limit.

President Donald Trump supports officially listing Antifa as a terrorist group. He called the supposed anti-fascists an assortment of “gutless Radical Left Wack Jobs” on Saturday.

9 members of an American Mormon community in Mexico — including 8-month-old twins — were killed in an ambush
Video posted to Facebook by a LeBarón family member shows the burned and bullet-ridden remains of one of the cars targeted in Monday's attack.
    Lafe Langford Jr./Facebook

    • At least nine members of a Mormon community in Mexico were killed in an ambush on Monday while driving between the Chihuahua and Sonora states.
    • The dead include three women and six children, the youngest being 8-month-old twins.
    • There's been no indication of who is responsible for the attack. Two members of the same community were murdered a decade ago after a confrontation with local drug gang members.
    • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

Gunmen have killed up to nine members of a US Mormon family, believed to be mainly children, in the latest massacre to afflict Mexico, family members said.

The victims belonged to the LeBarón family, members of a Mormon community who settled in northern Mexico in the 1920s and separated from the mainstream church when it abandoned polygamous marriages.

Two relatives Alex and Julian LeBaron told Reuters nine people had died, though a government source only confirmed five.

Relative Kendra Lee Miller identified the victims to NBC News as Rhonita Miller, 30; Christina Marie Langford Johnson, 29; Dawna Langford, 43; Trevor Langford, 11; Rogan Langford, 2; Howard Miller, 12; Krystal Miller, 10; and 8-month-old twins Titus and Tiana Miller.

It was unclear what motivated the killings, which took place on Monday as the group of women and children were traveling in a caravan between the Chihuahua and Sonora states.

A video posted on social media showed the charred and smoking remains of a vehicle riddled with bullet holes that was apparently carrying the victims when the attack happened.
There was no immediate indication of who was behind the attack.

Julian LeBaron described the incident as a "massacre," saying some family members were burnt alive. In a text message, he said other injured members of the family were being transported to Phoenix, Arizona, for treatment.
8 family members survived, including 2 children who fled into the countryside

There were eight survivors, family members told NBC News. At least two children who fled the attack were lost for hours in the countryside before being found.

In 2010, two members of the Chihuahua Mormon community, including one from the LeBaron family, were killed after confronting drug gangs that have de facto control over the region. The Mormons had suffered widespread kidnappings before that.

Mexico has been hit by a wave of attacks in recent weeks, shocking even for a country inured to a decade of drug war violence. The most notable incident was a military-style cartel assault that forced the government to release a leader of the Sinaloa Cartel in October.

Chihuahua and Sonora state governments issued a joint statement saying an investigation had been launched and that some people were presumed dead and others missing. The statement noted additional federal and local security forces were being sent into the area near the border between the two Mexican states, but did not provide further details.

US Ambassador to Mexico Christopher Landau, who traveled to Sonora earlier on Monday for unrelated work meetings, said he was following the incident closely.

"The security of our co-nationals is our great priority," he said on Twitter.

By Emily Crane and Adry Torres For Dailymail.com

    Published: | Updated:

A flat tire could have put three American Mormon mothers and six of their children in the crossfire of battling Mexican drug cartels after they were massacred in northern Mexico - as President Donald Trump has waged a war on the 'monsters' responsible.

The victims, who belonged to the LeBaron family, were ambushed by cartel gunmen eight miles apart on a dirt road in the Mexican border state of Sonora on Monday while traveling in a convoy of three SUVs.

The mothers were driving in separate vehicles with their children from the La Mora religious community where they live, which is a decades-old settlement in Sonora state founded as part of an offshoot of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

One of the SUVs is believed to have suffered a flat tire on a dirt road prior to the massacre, relatives told DailyMail.com.

Mexico's top security official Alfonso Durazo has blamed cartel gunmen for the gruesome attack and said they may have mistaken the group's large SUVs for rival gangs.

Nine of the LeBaron family members were slaughtered in the massacre. Six children were wounded in the attack and five have since been transferred to hospitals in Phoenix, Arizona.

The slaughter of U.S. citizens on Mexican soil quickly became an international issue with Trump on Tuesday vowing to help Mexico wage a war on its drug cartels.

Mexico's President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said he would discuss security on Tuesday with the U.S. after Trump fired off a series of tweets.

'This is the time for Mexico, with the help of the United States, to wage WAR on the drug cartels and wipe them off the face of the earth,' Trump tweeted.

Obrador, however, refused that approach, saying 'The worst thing you can have is war.'

At least three American mothers and six children from a Mormon community based in northern Mexico have been massacred in an attack blamed on drug cartel gunmen. Maria Rhonita Miller was killed along with her six-month-old twins, Titus and Tiana (left and right), her 10-year-old daughter Krystal (left) and 12-year-old son Howard (center)

Christina Langford Johnson (left) and Dawna Ray Langford (right) were also killed traveling in two separate SUVs. Christina saved her seven-month-old baby Faith's life by throwing the infant to the floor of their SUV. Two of Dawna's children, Trevor, 11, and Rogan, 3, were killed in the attack

Dawna Ray Langford, 43, and two of her children, Trevor, 11, (right with his mom) and Rogan, 3, (left) also died in the attack

Several LeBaron family members, many of whom live in Utah, took to social media following the massacre and described horrific scenes, including how gunmen opened fire on one child running away while others burned to death inside a car that was torched.

Other young children managed to escape and hide by the roadside while one of the mothers was shot in the chest as she put her hands up to surrender. Relatives fear some of the victims may have been raped.

One family member has described how a boy managed to hide his wounded siblings - some less than a year old - in bushes before he ran back to their community to get help after his mother was gunned down.

Family members say Rhonita Maria LeBaron was driving to Phoenix on Monday with her four children to pick up her husband at the airport following his work trip.

Relatives told DailyMail.com that her car broke down after she blew a tire. She returned to their community to get another car and set off again shortly before the other two mothers left.

Gunmen opened fire and torched her vehicle causing the gas tank to explode. She was killed along with her twin six-month-old babies, Titus and Tiana, her 10-year-old daughter Krystal and 12-year-old son Howard.

A video posted on social media showed the charred and smoking remains of her vehicle riddled with bullet holes.

Christina Langford Johnson, 29, Dawna Ray Langford, 43, and two of Dawna's children, Trevor, 11, and Rogan, 3, were killed traveling in the two other SUVs.

They were en route to see family in the state of Chihuahua for a wedding that was scheduled for Friday, relatives told DailyMail.com.

Family members say Christina saved her seven-month-old baby Faith's life by throwing the infant to the floor of their SUV as bullets tore through the vehicle.

Seven of Dawna's children survived but some suffered multiple gunshot wounds, according to relatives.

One of her sons covered his injured siblings with branches while he ran back home for help. Relatives say he reached the community hours later.

Family members alerted authorities before arming themselves with guns to go out searching for the injured children.

They found Christina's baby, unharmed, still in her car seat on the backseat floor of the SUV. Dawna's five injured children were taken by ambulance to hospital. The three children who were not injured are now back home at the community.

La Mora is about 70 miles south of Douglas in Arizona. Many of the church's members were born in Mexico and thus have dual citizenship.

A video posted on social media showed the charred and smoking remains of one of the vehicles riddled with bullet holes that was apparently carrying the victims when the attack happened

The shooting occurred near the town of Bavispe between Sonora and Chihuahua near the US-Mexico border

Relatives have since been paying tribute to their slain family members while also praising the heroic efforts of the surviving children.

'My beautiful niece.. I'm heartbroken I'm so so sorry you became a victim of the evil in this world. You will always be my angel girl. Hold your babies tight. Love you Dawna, Rogan and Trevor eternally #familieswillbetogetherforever,' Trish Cloes posted on Facebook.

'The evil might of had a plan on this earth but God has a greater plan for our family.'

She added in a later post: 'Dawna's children escaped with bullet holes in several places on their bodies. The children managed to get help under horrible circumstances.

'The children managed to escape with their baby brother. Baby was harmed with a bullet across his chest and through his arm. (Just got an update) This is a courage act of these innocent children.'

One of Rhonita’s aunts, Brenda LeBaron, called on the U.S. to take action over the family's murder.

'I am totally heart broken right now over this. We need the U.S. to take invasive action right now. I have made a few calls already and I am getting hit with the same thing... The president of Mexico has to call Trump and give us permission to move forward,' Brenda told DailyMail.com

'Trump tweeted that he needs the call from the President of Mexico and the U.S. will wipe the cartel out in this area. I need help to force the call and not allow the president of Mexico to avoid bringing in the military. If the President of Mexico doesn’t make the call then we all know that he is in with the cartels.'

Dawna's injured children are pictured above in hospital. Kylie Evelyn, 14, is pictured left in hospital with blood soaked jeans as she is comforted by a relative following thew shocking attack. Brixon Oliver, 10 months, feeds from a bottle (right) in hospital alongside his siblings

Kenny LeBarón, a cousin of one of the women, told the New York Times: 'When you know there are babies tied in a car seat that are burning because of some twisted evil that's in this world. It's just hard to cope with that.'

Another relative, Lafe LeBaron, said the family had no help from authorities. He said family members from the community had risked their own lives by 'scrambling into the mountains to find our loved ones' after first finding out about the attacks.

Julian LeBaron, a relative and activist who has denounced criminal groups in the area, described the attack as a 'massacre'.

His brother, Benjamin LeBaron, founder of a crime-fighting group called SOS Chihuahua, was assassinated in 2009.

When asked who might be responsible, LeBaron said the attack took place in a 'war zone', home to drug cartels and 'thugs'.

The government deployed the army to fight drug trafficking in 2006, but experts blame the so-called 'drug war' for the spiraling violence between fragmented cartels and the military, which has lead to more than 250,000 murders.

His family 'may have been caught in crossfire or targeted by mistake, we don't know the cause,' he said, but added that the Mormon community had recently been the target of threats.

Family members say Rhonita Maria LeBaron (left) was driving to Phoenix on Monday with her four children to pick up her husband and then return to Mexico to celebrate their wedding anniversary. She was killed along with her twin six-month-old babies, Titus and Tiana, (right) her 10-year-old daughter Krystal and 12-year-old son Howard.

THE LEBARON FAMILY AND THEIR TIES TO MEXICO

    LEBARON FAMILY'S HISTORY IN MEXICO:

The LeBaron family are part of a Mormon community based in the Mexican border state of Sonora.

They founded the group as part of an offshoot of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When the church abandoned the practice of polygamy in the late 1800s, some polygamous Mormons moved to Mexico to set up new colonies.

Alma Dayer LeBaron was one of them and set up the community with his family in 1924 after being excommunicated from the church.

Alma passed the leadership over to his son Joel when he died in 1951. He subsquently incorporated the community as part of Salt Lake City' Church of the Firstborn.

His younger brother Ervil was his second in charge at the time. The brothers later fell out over the leadership of the community and Ervil went on to set up another sect in San Diego, california in 1972.

Evril, who had at least 13 wives, had Joel killed in 1972. He was tried and convicted in Mexico for Joel's murder in 1974.
While in prison, he wrote the 400-page commandment to kill disobedient church members who were included in a hit list.
Evril died in prison in 1981 but six family members organized 'four o'clock' murders, which saw an eight-year-old child and three former members shot dead within minutes of each other in Texas in 1988.

FAMILY'S PREVIOUS DEALINGS WITH CRIME GANGS:

The massacre on Monday is not be the first time that members of the break-away church have been attacked in northern Mexico.

Eric LeBaron was kidnapped in May 2009 but the family turned down a $1 million ransom demand and he was eventually freed.

In June 2009, Benjamin LeBaron, an anti-crime activist, was murdered in neighboring Chihuahua state.

The Chihuahua state attorney general, Cesar Augusto Peniche, said the number of victims killed in the attacks remains 'confused'.

Authorities in Sonora state and the U.S. Embassy did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The federal Department of Security and Citizens' Protection said security forces were reinforced with National Guard, army and state police troops in the area following 'the reports about disappearance and aggression against several people.'

The U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Christopher Landau said in a tweet in Spanish that 'the safety of our fellow citizens is our top priority. I am closely following the situation in the mountains between Sonora and Chihuahua'.

Claudia Pavlovich Arellano, the governor of Sonora, said on Twitter late Monday that 'as a mother,' she was filled with deep pain by 'the cowardly acts in the mountains'.
'I don't know what kind of monsters dare to hurt women and children,' she wrote.

Senator for Sonora, Lilly Téllez, tweeted: 'The massacre in Sonora cannot go unpunished.'

Manuel Añorve Baños, another Mexican senator, described the incident 'a despicable, merciless and savage act'.

It would not be the first time that members of the break-away church had been attacked in northern Mexico, where their forebears settled - often in Chihuahua state - decades ago.
The colony was founded by Alma Dayer LeBaron who moved to Mexico as a breakaway from the Mormon church in 1924 after being excommunicated from the church for practicing polygamy.

When Alma died in 1951, he passed the leadership of the community on to his son Joel LeBaron, whose younger brother Ervil LeBaron, was his second in command.

When the brother's split, Ervil had Joel killed. He was tried and convicted in Mexico for Joel's murder in 1974. He died in prison in 1981.

In 2009, Benjamin LeBaron, an anti-crime activist who was related to those killed in Monday's attack, was murdered in 2009 in neighboring Chihuahua
    state.

One former member is George Romney, father of 2012 Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who was born in 1907 in Colonia Dublan in Chihuahua state.

DEVELOPING: President Trump Offers Mexico Military Assistance to Clean Out Cartel Armies After 9 Americans including 6 Children Slaughtered in Gun Battle

by Jim Hoft November 5, 2019 343 Comments

At least nine Americans including 6 children were killed in an apparent cartel ambush attack Monday in Mexico.

The cartel ambush was so severe that one of the cars EXPLODED!

Family members of the victims told CBS News the FBI is part of the investigation into the attack that they believe is linked to a Mexican drug cartel.

And Democrats say their is no crisis at the border!

President Trump offered the Mexican government military assistance to clean out the killer cartel “armies” in northern Mexico.

….monsters, the United States stands ready, willing & able to get involved and do the job quickly and effectively. The great new President of Mexico has made this a big issue, but the cartels have become so large and powerful that you sometimes need an army to defeat an army!

Mexican Cartels ‘Will Be Designated’ as Foreign Terrorist Organizations, Says President Trump

    Bob Price26 Nov 20193

President Donald Trump told Bill O’Reilly he will designate some Mexican cartels as Foreign Terrorist Organizations during an interview released on Tuesday.

“They will be designated … I have been working on that for the last 90 days,” President Trump told O’Reilly, according to a Reuters report Tuesday. “You know, designation is not that easy, you have to go through a process, and we are well into that process.”

The President told Breitbart News earlier this year that he was thinking about the designation. “We’re thinking about doing it very seriously. In fact, we’ve been thinking about it for a long time,” he said during an Oval Office interview.

“It’s psychological, but it’s also economic,” the President explained. “As terrorists — as terrorist organizations, the answer is yes. They are.”

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) told reporters on Monday that he would not accept a move to designate cartels as FTOs, Breitbart Texas reported. “We will never accept that, we are not ‘vendepatrias’ (nation sellers),” the Mexican president stated.

In March, U.S. Representative Chip Roy (R-TX) introduced legislation to direct the U.S. State Department to designate certain factions of Mexican cartels as Foreign Terrorist Organizations, Breitbart Texas reported at the time.

“Cartels are the problem and it is time we started acting like it,” Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) said in a written statement. “My colleague Rep. Mark Green (R-TN) and I are asking Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to conduct a review in order to designate these specific Mexican drug cartels Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs).”

The bill from the Republican representatives calls for the designation of the following cartel factions as FTOs:

The Reynosa/Los Metros faction of the Gulf Cartel
The Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG)
The Cartel Del Noreste (CDN) faction of Los Zetas

WASHINGTON/MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said he will designate Mexican drug cartels as terrorist groups for their role in trafficking narcotics and people, prompting a speedy request for talks by Mexico.

Soon afterwards, Mexico’s foreign ministry issued a statement saying it would quickly seek a high-level meeting with U.S. State Department officials to address the legal designation as well as the flow of arms and money to organized crime.

“The foreign minister will establish contact with his counterpart, Michael R. Pompeo, in order to discuss this very important issue for the bilateral agenda,” the ministry said.

Once a particular group is designated as a terrorist organization, under U.S. law it is illegal for people in the United States to knowingly offer support and its members cannot enter the country and may be deported.

Financial institutions that become aware they have funds connected to the group must block the money and alert the U.S. Treasury Department.

Earlier this month, Trump had offered in a tweet to help Mexico “wage WAR on the drug cartels and wipe them off the face of the earth” in the aftermath of the bloodiest attack on U.S. citizens in Mexico for years.

Three women and six children of dual U.S.-Mexican nationality were killed in the ambush in northern Mexico. Mexican authorities said they may have been victims of mistaken identity amid confrontations among drug gangs in the area.

Alex LeBaron, a former Mexican congressman and relative of some of the victims, on Twitter rejected the idea of a U.S. “invasion”.

“We have already been invaded by terrorist cartels,” he wrote. “We demand real coordination between both countries... both countries are responsible for the rising trade in drugs, weapons and money.”

The LeBaron extended family has often been in conflict with drug traffickers in Chihuahua and victims’ relatives said the killers must have known who they were targeting.

For all the demands from talking heads that the US deploy military personnel to police tribal disputes along the borders of Turkey, Iraq and Syria, the real border crisis facing the US is happening in our own backyard.

Fact is, the situation in Mexico poses a far greater threat to American security. Our Southern neighbor is rapidly becoming a narco-state run by cartel drug lords.

On Monday, nine Americans — including six children — were ambushed and murdered in the Mexican border state of Sonora. Mexican news reports said the attack had all the hallmarks of an organized crime attack.

Last month, a cartel paramilitary force faced down Mexico’s own army following the arrest of Ovidio Guzman, a son of “El Chapo,” the notorious Sinaloa cartel kingpin who was convicted in US federal court and sentenced to life in prison last February.

Minutes after Guzman was captured, the Sinaloa cartel declared war and demanded his release. Less than four hours after the arrest, government forces surrendered. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador nonetheless declared afterward that his administration was “doing really well with our strategy” to counter cartel influence.

The violence throughout Mexico makes Chicago look like Stepford in comparison. Since 2007, nearly 275,000 people have been murdered. In 2018 alone, that number exceeded 33,000. Assassinations of government officials hit a record high, according to Justice in Mexico, which tracks violence there. Journalists who report unfavorably on cartel activities are regularly targeted for death.

None of this happens in a vacuum, which is why the failure of the Mexican government to deal with narco-violence, and the international drug trade that fuels it, threatens our own national security.

American deaths from overdoses on synthetic opioids like Fentanyl have skyrocketed over the last decade. Although the initial injection of Fentanyl into the US bloodstream came from China (via the US postal system), officials now say the majority of lab-created opioids smuggled into America come through Mexico.

The result has been an overdose epidemic that has destroyed lives, upended small communities and left countless individuals hopelessly addicted to a drug 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine.

In short, the collapse of Mexico doesn’t just endanger its own people. It also threatens the sovereignty and security of the US, as the violence, addiction and economic woes caused by the cartels refuse to remain within the borders of Latin America.

Beefed up barriers along the US-Mexico border are indisputably necessary — a nation that won’t defend its own borders will eventually cease to be a nation — but walls by themselves aren’t enough.

Mexican officials must finally face down the druglords and eliminate their ability to operate with impunity. The military and police have to enforce zero-tolerance policies on corruption. In the US, prosecutors and regulators need to crack down on the financial institutions getting rich by laundering billions in drug money for cartel kingpins.

And our elected officials in Congress must get serious about securing our border to stop both drug- and human-trafficking.

John Daniel Davidson, a border expert, recently wrote in The Federalist that Mexico is “now on a trajectory to become a vast gangland governed more by warlordism than the state.”

“The last time this happened was a century ago, during the decade-long Mexican revolution, which eventually triggered the invasion and occupation of northern Mexico in 1916 by the US Army,” he noted. “Before it was over, US forces attacked and occupied Nogales, Sonora, in 1918, and Ciudad Juarez in 1919.”

While a modern invasion by US forces may not be imminent, it’s not unthinkable. Following the brutal murder of the nine Americans in Sonora, President Trump tweeted that America stood ready to help the Mexican government eradicate the cartel threat.

“This is the time for Mexico, with the help of the United States, to wage WAR on the drug cartels and wipe them off the face of the earth,” Trump wrote.

But it will take more than tweets to address the lawlessness that has not just plagued Mexico, but has directly fueled the illegal immigration, gang violence and drug problems now facing America.

Our elected leaders should spend more time and energy dealing with the dire security threats on the US-Mexico border and less time looking for new nations to invade or regimes to overthrow in the Middle East.

CARTEL SIEGES LEAVE MEXICANS WONDERING IF CRIMINALS RUN THE COUNTRY

    27 November 2019
    ANGÉLICA DURAN-MARTINEZ

Recent deadly attacks by criminal organisations have instilled fear across Mexico.

In mid-October, shootouts between cartels and police in the states of Guerrero and Michoacán killed over 30 people. And a 12-hour criminal assault on Culiacán, Sinaloa, after Mexican security forces captured the son of drug kingpin Joaqu*n “El Chapo” Guzmán left 13 people dead, including at least three civilians.

    Cullacan Mexico

"The attacks, some carefully planned and executed, have made the Mexican government appear weak on organised crime. By early November, the hashtag #MexicoNoTienePresidente – Mexico has no President – was trending on Twitter."

On 4th November the massacre of nine Mexican-American Mormon women and children in northern Mexico shocked both sides of the border.

The attacks, some carefully planned and executed, have made the Mexican government appear weak on organised crime. By early November, the hashtag #MexicoNoTienePresidente – Mexico has no President – was trending on Twitter.

    Mexico’s violent cycles
Security was a focus of Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s winning campaign for the presidency last year.

He proposed novel strategies to “pacify” Mexico, including giving amnesty to low-level drug traffickers who leave the business, and legalising marijuana to turn a lucrative criminal market into a regulated, commercial one.

López Obrador also promised to punish police and soldiers for human rights violations committed when battling cartels.

But 18 months into his six-year term, López Obrador’s only concrete security policy was the creation in June, 2019, of a controversial new military-style police force, the National Guard. So far, however, Mexico’s 70,000 National Guardsmen have mostly been tasked with stopping Central American migration.

One initiative that looked promising – an independent commission of forensic experts and prosecutors established to investigate the unsolved 2014 disappearance of 43 students in Ayotzinapa, Guerrero state – has had setbacks. In September, 24 police officers implicated in the students’ disappearances were freed from jail for insufficient evidence, compelling López Obrador’s government to file a judicial appeal.

Meanwhile, with 25,890 murders reported through September, 2019 looks to be another record-shatteringly violent year for Mexico.

    No new drug war
My research on Mexico’s chronic criminal violence finds that sudden upticks in violence usually signal increased conflict between criminal cartels, like the current clashes between the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación and the Sinaloa Cartel.

I also find that showy, coordinated attacks like those seen recently typically occur during political transitions or because of intense electoral competition – times when the government cannot effectively coordinate law enforcement or maintain corrupt criminal arrangements.

Some in Mexico argue that the recent cartel offensives demand an extreme military response. President Donald Trump has even offered a US intervention.

    Attack on Mormon family

An attack on the LeBaron family killed three Mormon women and six of their children near the US-Mexico border, on 6th November. PICTURE: AP Photo/Christian Chavez

But President López Obrador insists that he will not restart the Mexican government’s all-out war on cartels. Sending soldiers to fight crime, as consecutive governments have done since 2006, actually drove up violence in Mexico by creating more competition between organised crime groups and thus more retaliation. Thousands of civilians have also been killed in the cross-fire between cartels and soldiers.

The president’s aversion to militarized security didn’t stop him from creating the Mexican National Guard. But it was on display in Culiacán last month when Mexican soldiers were outpowered by cartel members. Rather than fight to keep El Chapo’s son in custody, they released him.

“The capture of a criminal is not worth more than people’s lives,” López Obrador said.

The incident was widely seen as an embarrassment for the Mexican government. López Obrador’s approval rating, while still high, has declined since the recent violence.

But in times of war, deescalation is sometimes the only way to prevent more bloodshed. There is no easy fix for entrenched criminal violence. Every decision, every policy, has trade-offs.

    Indigenous resistance
That doesn’t mean the cartels should be left alone.

The researchers Sandra Ley, Guillermo Trejo and Shannan Mattiace have studied how some Indigenous communities in the dangerous southern state of Guerrero have managed to prevent criminal infiltration of the police and local judiciary. One strategy, they found, was quickly identifying and shaming officers and judges who collude with cartels.

Having trustworthy institutions has, in turn, enabled these communities to resist cartel pressures from within and react powerfully when cartels attack.

Because it draws on Mexican Indigenous communities’ unique, long tradition of social mobilisation, this strategy is not easily replicable.

But that, too, is a lesson: All violence is local. The many illegal markets that fuel the criminal business in Mexico – from drugs and oil theft to extortion and avocado distribution – may be national and international, but the cartels’ specific crime dynamics are not.

The way crime groups establish territorial control, gain power and carry out attacks varies from place to place. So do the criminals’ political relationships and the ways different communities respond to violence.

    A temporary turnaround
Take Ciudad Juárez, for example – just across the border from El Paso, Texas.

In 2010, Juárez was the most violent city in the world. By 2012, violence had dropped by 60 per cent.

Some analysts and politicians credited Todos Somos Juárez – “We Are All Juarez” – a federal program that funded 160 short-term social improvement projects like new housing, sports programs and improved public security infrastructure.

    Mexican president press conference

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador faced scrutiny after security forces released the son of drug kingpin Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, on 18th October. PICTURE: Mexico Presidential Press Office via AP

But violence also decreased in Juárez, my research shows, because the federal security forces occupying the city, who were responsible for many abuses of power, largely withdrew in 2011. Plus, the Sinaloa Cartel eventually prevailed in its turf war with the Juárez Cartel.

Ciudad Juárez’s turnaround was temporary. As a result of increased competition between cartels, new armed factions and local gangs, homicides in the city increased 700 per cent last year.

US immigration policy is hurting Ciudad Juárez, too. The thousands of migrants forced to await their US asylum hearings in Mexico – many of them homeless – have become easy prey for organised crime, according to the US Immigration Policy Center at the University of San Diego. Kidnapping and robbery are way up along the US-Mexico border.

    All crime is local
The Juárez and Guerrero examples suggest that Mexico may have to tackle crime not only federally, with its new National Guard, but also city-by-city.

That may mean federal financing and training of elite, reliable local civilian police forces, learning from Indigenous towns in Guerrero. It could mean funding social programs like Juárez’s, to get at the root causes of violence.

It will certainly require partnering with local political and civilian allies who understand how criminal gangs exert their power.

City-specific security strategies won’t show immediate results. But they can help restore the Mexican government’s legitimacy and control in a country besieged by cartels.

Acting Homeland Security Secretary Presents An ‘Exciting’ Plan To Combat Gangs, Cartels
By Jennie Taer -November 25, 2019

In an exclusive interview with Fox News, Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf said he has an “exciting” plan for combatting the transnational criminal (TCO) gangs and drug cartels.

Further, Wolf signaled that he will need more resources than what has been afforded under the transnational criminal designation.

“So when we talk about TCOs, it’s not only them facilitating the flow of migrants to the border, it’s also drugs, weapons and a lot of the violence,” Wolf told Fox News.

“So targeting TCOs in a real way … is something that I will certainly push and work on from a DHS perspective, but we’ll also be working in the larger interagency to really start targeting these groups, because once you start eliminating their ability to bring migrants and the like, then I think you’ll start seeing a different dynamic,” said Wolf.

My message to transnational criminal organizations is simple: You can not outrun our agents. You cannot hide from our reach. We will seek you out. We will track you down. And we will destroy your operations and the death machine you are attempting to operate.

Wolf took over DHS as its Acting Director after Kevin McAleenan announced his resignation in October.

“I put in a very good man who’s highly respected, and he’s acting right now and we’ll see where that goes,” President Donald Trump told reporters following his announcement.

There is no indication as to if or when Wolf will be confirmed. In the meantime, he’s working to seize the bank accounts of the ruthless TCOs and cartels.

In her documentary released last year, Sara A. Carter urged the federal government to designate the Mexican drug cartels Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs). If they don’t comply, she said, the U.S. government will allow the cartels to destroy American communities through their illicit narcotics trafficking and distribution operations that continue to fuel an opioid epidemic that’s killing nearly 130 Americans each day.

Earlier this year, Carter testified before the Ohio House Criminal Justice Committee. There, Carter pointed to several states that the cartels have identified “as a potential marketing place to gain more and more addicts, infiltrate the school systems, make their money and bring it back to Mexico, and continue to perpetuate this horrific epidemic.” That kind of behavior, she said is characteristic of “a terrorist action.”

Mexican Farmers Abandon Lands After Gulf Cartel Attacks near Texas Border

    28 November 2019

REYNOSA, Tamaulipas – Several farmers were forced to leave their lands after weeks of attacks by Gulf Cartel gunmen, culminating in the recent shooting of seven victims who were mostly children.

Farmers from the Congregacion Garza community and other nearby areas left their homes on Tuesday afternoon after burying three of their loved ones. The rural area is approximately 16 miles south of the Texas border.

On Saturday night, seven members of the Olivares family were returning to their homes after a religious celebration when gunmen ambushed and opened fire on their two vehicles. Two homicide victims were in their 60s and another was an underage girl. Three other young girls and a 73-year-old man sustained gunshot injuries.

The attack on the farmers comes after several weeks of attacks by the Gulf Cartel which targeted farmers for kidnapping, arson, and general demands to abandon property.

The area of the attacks is not far from Libramiento Sur highway, a road the Gulf Cartel uses to carjack unsuspecting motorists. The region features numerous dirt roads the cartel uses to avoid state police and military forces.

The attack on the farmers comes as Reynosa continues to see regular violence as a Gulf Cartel faction known as “Los Metros” fights their internal rivals from the Matamoros faction and the “Cartel Del Noreste” wing of Los Zetas. The sects are pushing east and west respectively to take lucrative drug trafficking and human smuggling routes into Texas.
