Was UFO a Russian ballistic missile?

Russian Defense Ministry says it successfully test-fired intercontinental ballistic missile Thursday; earlier, unidentified flying object reported in Israel, Lebanon, other states in region
    Ynet reporters
    Latest Update: 06.08.12, 00:17 / Israel News

The glowing light reported in Israel's skies around 8:45 pm Thursday apparently resulted from of a failed intercontinental ballistic missile test by the Russian military, according to estimates.

Later Thursday, Russian news agency Novosti quoted the Defense Ministry in Moscow, which confirmed that a missile was test-fired from the Astrakhan region in central Russia. The trail of light seen in Israel was also reported in Armenia, Turkey, Cyprus, Lebanon, Jordan and other countries in the region.

According to a statement issued by Russia's Defense Ministry, crews belonging to the army's strategic missile division successfully test-fired a ballistic missile at 9:39 pm, Moscow time. A video shot in the area the missile was fired from showed parts of the missile falling. However, the clip was removed a few minutes after being posted.

Hundreds of Israelis nationwide flooded police hotlines Thursday evening with reports of an unidentified flying object in the nation's skies.

    Missile as seen in Russia

Israeli Astronomical Association Chairman Dr. Yigal Pat-El said that it is quite possible that the unidentified flying object reported by residents nationwide was a ballistic missile test.

"It most likely spun out of control and its remnants and the fuel was what people saw. It reached a height of 200-300 kilometers and that's why it was seen from so many locations," he told Ynet.

"We saw a large trail of light traveling from a distant spot in the sky," Dorit from northern Israel reported earlier. "We could not see the source of the light. The trail was massive. It was an unusual sight. Moments later we saw swirling movement where the light was coming from."

Concerned citizens in Armenia and Lebanon also called their local police stations after seeing the unusual glowing light. One Lebanese citizen reported seeing the light in the sky and in response an American web-surfer said it might be a military test. The Lebanese woman laughingly responded with: "A military test? Here?"

Notably, similar reports were received in Norway in 2009, following a failed Russian missile test. At the time, residents offered various explanations, ranging from a meteor to a UFO.

Glowing Objects in Lebanon’s Sky Linked to Russian Missile Test

Russia’s News Agency Novosti assured Friday that the glowing object that appeared in the sky and witnessed by a number of Middle Eastern countries Thursday was the result of Russia’s inter-continental ballistic missile (ICBM) test.
A mysterious flying and shining object swirling around appeared in the sky and was witnessed in Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Iran, Syria, Jordan, Armenia, Cyprus and Israel, sparking havoc and astonishment among residents. The object gave off light and was followed by a smoke trail before it disappeared.
Novosti quoted the Defense Ministry in Moscow, which confirmed that a missile was test-fired from the Astrakhan region in central Russia, reports said.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry, crews belonging to the army's strategic missile division successfully test-fired a ballistic missile at 9:39 pm, Moscow time. A video shot in the area showed parts of the missile falling, reports added.
In Lebanon media outlets raced to find an explanation for the spectacle to calm residents and dismiss fear, LBCI quoted astronomical sources that said “according to the scientific explanation, the phenomenon of the glowing objects resulted from large meteorites.”
OTV station reported that glowing objects were not only sighted above the Lebanese-Israeli border but also above Turkish-Syrian border.

So the Russians launched a missile in the "general direction" of Israel to "test" things and it "failed".

It would seem to me this was a direct and overt threat to Israel over Iran.

Wonder what made it "successful"? The fact that it fell into a zone that is alleged to be under "US Protection" then?

As the drums for direct military intervention to derail Iran’s purported covert military nuclear weapons program beat louder in both Jerusalem and Washington, an overlooked issue is the possibility of international “collateral damage,” to use the Pentagon’s favourite euphemism for civilian casualties.

On 14 November South Korea’s Chosun Ilbo stated, "Hundreds of North Korean scientists and engineers are working at about 10 nuclear and missile facilities in Iran, including Natanz, The North Koreans are apparently rotated every six months." Russian technicians also remain at Iran’s first nuclear electrical energy facility, Bushehr. So, any aerial strikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities could result in significant numbers of dead Russian and North Korean specialists as “collateral damage,” with all the diplomatic uncertainties that might ensue from Moscow and Pyongyang as the body bags start arriving home.

The https://www.cia.govwebsite, which listed the report, describes the Chosun Ilbo website as “conservative in editorial orientation -- strongly nationalistic, anti-North Korea, and generally pro-U.S.”

For those looking for more smoking guns, Japan’s Sankei Shimbun reports that among the Iranian sites the North Koreans have been involved in are three research centres carrying out simulations of how to trigger nuclear weapons.

The news complicates the situation for advocates of a “clean” surgical strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities.

History seems to be repeating itself. The world has in fact lived with an “Islamic nuclear bomb” for the last thirteen years, when on 28 May 1998, a few weeks after India's second nuclear test, Pakistan detonated five nuclear devices in the Chagai Hills in Balochistan’s Chagai district. Pakistan began focusing on nuclear weapons development in January 1972 under the leadership of Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, who famously declared seven years earlier in 1965, “If India builds the bomb, we will eat grass or leaves, even go hungry. But we will get one of our own.”

On 18 May 1974, Bhutto’s, by then Prime Minister, worst fears were realized when India’s first nuclear test, Pokhran-I, was conducted in Rajasthan.

It took Pakistan 14 years to match New Delhi’s effort, breaking India’s south Asian nuclear monopoly. South Asia is now effectively in nuclear stasis, as both India and Pakistan both possess nuclear armaments.

Why this diversion into Islamabad’s nuclear policies?

Because Pakistan’s top nuclear scientist, Dr. Abdul Kadeer Khan from Pakistan’s Kahuta nuclear establishment helped Iran develop its uranium-235 centrifuge enrichment program.

Contributing to Tehran’s concerns about its nuclear endeavours, Iran’s uranium centrifuge cascades have recently been subjected to a series of sustained cyber attacks, first by the Stuxnet computer virus and more recently, by the Dugu computer virus. In January The New York Times reported that the U.S. and Israeli intelligence services collaborated to develop the Stuxnet computer worm to sabotage Iran's efforts to make a nuclear bomb. As for the Duqu computer virus, Iran’s civil defense head, Brigadier General Gholamreza Jalali told IRNA news agency, "The software to control the (Duqu) virus has been developed and made available to organizations and corporations." Interestingly, North Korea’s Korean Central News Agency state media outlet reported Iran’s Duqu computer virus attacks.

On 12 September Iran brought its first nuclear power plant in Bushehr online, connecting the 1,000 megawatt plant to the country's electrical grid, bolstering Iran’s claims to develop civilian nuclear power use under the terms of the Non Proliferation Treaty, of which Iran is a signatory, unlike Israel.

Israel is a de facto nuclear weapons power, Iran at best an incipient one. The question lurking in the drawing rooms of Washington and Europe is whether a military strike will irrevocably or only temporarily sustain the status quo, and if the possible cost is worth the ultimate risk.

Do the mullahs in Tehran have more nefarious objectives than generating electricity?

The jury’s seemingly still out, but one thing as clear – if Israel and/or the U.S. shortly decide to mount an aerial assault against Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, the “collateral damage” now will not be limited to Iranians, for all the international consequences that might ensue after Moscow and Pyongyang begin receiving their dead technicians.

Russia prepares for war in Syria, army units

    Source: NL(Roughly Translated)

Russian Defense Ministry launched an intensive training units for operations abroad, including in Syria. Preparation for combat operations in this country, may lead Pskov 76th air assault division of Airborne, the 15th Brigade combined arms in Samara, as well as special units staffed by the Chechens, who had previously served in the GRU spetsbatalonah “West” and “East” writes, “Nezavisimaya Gazeta”, citing anonymous sources in the military.

Pskov Airborne Division – one of the most combat-ready connections in the Russian army, the newspaper notes. Its officers, NCOs and men participated in the peacekeeping operation in Kosovo in 1999-2001, in both Chechen wars in 1994-1996 and 1999-2007, and in the war with Georgia in August 2008.

In 2004, the first division in the Russian army was fully contracted. As for the Chechen soldier, then in 2006-2007 they were initiated by then-Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov has successfully carried out peacekeeping missions in Lebanon, reminiscent of “NG”.They distinguished themselves in combat operations against Georgia in South Ossetia in August 2008. In addition, preparation for possible action in the Syrian special forces have already passed from the separate brigade of marines Black Sea Fleet.

They were present at the patrol ship “Smetliviy”, which in May, before returning from almost two months of the watch in the Mediterranean Sea, visited the Syrian port of Tartus, where the point of logistics of the Russian Navy. “Smetliviy” returned to Sevastopol on May 31, as reported Ukrainian news agency UNIAN.At the same time Head of Information Management BSF captain Vyacheslav Trukhachev agency said that security is “Sharpness” with the passage of the Straits, and docked in the Syrian port provided a group of anti-terror – a separate brigade of marines BSF.

A day earlier from the Mediterranean returned to the Russian tanker “Iman” which in Tartus fueling ships of the Russian Navy. In March, nearly burst into an international scandal, when the Syrian opposition in the Arab media rumors spread that the tanker are special forces and attack aircraft the Marine Corps.Europe, even Russia has warned against landing in Syria of its military.

In rebuttal made by the press service of the Ministry of Defense, Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. They explained that “Iman” performs only the task of logistics and staffed by civilian personnel on board is only a guard unit. But Lavrov added that such “fairy tale” The Syrian opposition – is a clear provocation aimed at disrupting peace in the country to plan a special envoy of UN / LAS General Kofi Annan.

“Kosovo precedent” and “brilliant initiative” Trust Dmitry Medvedev The representatives of the Russian leadership assured that no troops to send to Syria is not planned. But amid the worsening situation around the country began to fear the Russian press that Russia and the West will be on the verge of armed conflict – as was the case in Kosovo. themselves diplomats, who are still afraid, “the Libyan scenario” in Syria is increasingly remembered the “Kosovo precedent” 1999, when NATO began bombing Yugoslavia without UN authorization.

This provoked an acute crisis between Russia and the West, which nearly resulted in a direct conflict, when Russian paratroopers occupied the Pristina airport. Now, after 13 years in the West once again talked about the possibility of military operation, bypassing the United Nations, where Russia and China have veto power As permanent members of the Security Council, will block any resolution with this scenario. to the participation of Russian troops outside the country, including in Syria, in addition to the UN resolution, you need a political solution to the Russian leadership.

Last week, Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Bordyuzha said that part of the Collective Rapid Reaction Forces in dealing with the Syrian conflict, “it is theoretically possible.” However, he stressed that the military in Syria will fall into this hell, because they are fighting with heavy weapons and any interference with the goals of peacekeeping would mean keeping active hostilities. “In Syria, apparently, you need to carry out an operation to enforce peace, first of all militias – said Bordyuzha. – That is, those who are trying to solve political problems by force of arms, not in the constitution of the state.” Therefore, he concluded that the initiative to send CSTO forces in Syria – “bright only for politicians.”

Russia, China repeat opposition to intervention in Syria

Chinese Ambassador to the United Nations Li Baodong (L) and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov (file photo)

    Fri Jun 8, 2012 12:30AM GMT

China and Russia have once again expressed opposition to foreign armed intervention and forcible regime change in Syria.

“There will not be a [United Nations] Security Council mandate for outside intervention [in Syria], I guarantee you that," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters on Thursday on the sidelines of a visit to Kazakhstan, AFP reported.

He added that allowing any outside military intervention against Damascus would benefit armed groups in the country, and that Moscow would veto any Security Council resolution authorizing intervention in Syria. The Kremlin’s stance was also echoed at the 66th session of the UN General Assembly on Thursday.

"We resolutely oppose the solutions to the Syrian crisis through outside armed intervention or any attempt to forcibly promote regime change," Chinese Ambassador to the UN Li Baodong told the assembly.

Russia and China vetoed two previous Security Council resolutions against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s government.

On Thursday, the opposition Syrian National Council (SNC) called on the anti-Damascus rebels inside Syria to “step up military assaults” on security forces.

Earlier in the day, the Syrian government issued a statement, rejecting a report by the SNC, which had alleged that security forces had killed 100 people in the al-Qubeir village in the west-central Syria province of Hama on Wednesday.

“A terrorist group committed a heinous crime in the Hama region, which claimed nine victims. The reports by the media are contributing to spilling the blood of Syrians,” the statement said.

On Wednesday, the official Syrian Arab News Agency said that an “armed terrorist group” had killed a brigadier general and two other members of security forces in Damascus’ countryside, and two others in the western province of Latakia during the day.

Hundreds of people, including many members of the Syrian security forces, have been killed in the unrest that began in Syria in March 2011. Damascus says foreign-sponsored “saboteurs and terrorists” are responsible for the killings.

Netanyahu blames 'Axis of Evil' for Syria massacres

    By JPOST.COM STAFF
    10/06/2012

Mofaz, Peres demand more from int'l community to topple Assad; at least 35 killed in Syrian army bombardment of Homs.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Sunday condemned the ongoing massacre of Syrian civilians by President Bashar Assad, blaming the violence on the Axis of Evil: Iran, Syria and Hezbollah.

"This axis is rearing its ugly head," Netanyahu told his cabinet, "and the world must understand that this is the region we live in."

We see the horrible pictures of the children and elderly.

This is a massacre that is being carried outnot only at the hands of the government of Syria.

Those assisting the Syrian government areIran and the Hezbollah

And the world needs to see todaythe focused axis of evil Iran, Syria, Hezbollah.

And the face of this axis of evilis revealed in its full ugliness.

Everyone should understandwhat environment we are living in.

At least 35 people were killed in Syrian army bombardment over the last 24 hours in a clashes taking place in the rural province of Homs, the epicentre of the revolt against Assad, opposition activists said on Sunday.

The prime minister's condemnation joins a growing chorus of anti-Syria rhetoric from the political establishment, with Vice Premier Shaul Mofaz, Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon and President Shimon Peres all attacking Assad on Sunday for his crimes against civilians.

At the start of the weekly meeting, Netanyahu said that Syrian forces are killing innocents, including women and children.

The prime minister tied the massacres to Iran and Hezbollah, who he claimed are providing the Syrian president with assistance.

Israel had until recently been slow to call for Assad's fall, wary of worsening the turmoil in Syria. But with hourly media reports in Israel of Syrian civilian deaths, public anger has been growing and Israeli officials have been stepping up their criticism.

    Earlier Sunday,
Mofaz accused Assad of committing genocide during his crackdown on a 15-month uprising. "A crime against humanity, genocide, is being conducted in Syria today. And the silence of the world powers is contrary to all human logic," said Mofaz during an interview on Army Radio.

Foreign powers were "making do with flaccid condemnation" rather than intervening to overthrow Assad, he added.

    "Worse than that is the
Russian conduct, which weakly condemns the slaughter while continuing to arm Assad's murderous regime. Best-case scenario, this is irresponsible, and worst-case, it is a partnership in the slaughter," Mofaz said.

    Also Sunday,
President Shimon Peres said that the world is not doing enough to stop the bloodshed in Syria, and that he hopes the Syrian rebels defeat Assad. Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon also attacked Assad, adding that Israel is offering humanitarian assistance to the citizens of Syria through the International Committee of the Red Cross.

    On Saturday, opposition leader
Shelly Yechimovich called on the international community to impose a full economic embargo on Syria.

Russia's Lavrov to visit Iran ahead of Moscow talks

    MOSCOW - Agence France- Presse

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will visit Iran on Wednesday to discuss the upcoming Moscow talks on Tehran's nuclear programme as well as the Syria crisis, his ministry said.

"The focus of attention... will be on the situation in the Middle East and North Africa, with the emphasis on the current transformation processes taking place in the Arab world and Syria," new agencies quoted a foreign ministry official as saying Monday.

Russia has proposed holding an international conference on Syria aimed at saving mediator Kofi Annan's tattered peace plan for a 15-month conflict that observers say has claimed more than 13,500 lives.

Lavrov has pressed for Iran's inclusion despite strong reservations from the United States, France and Britain.

"Without Iran's involvement, the opportunity to exert constructive pressure on Syria will not be implemented in full," the foreign ministry said on Monday.

Moscow on June 18-19 will host the third round of thus far unproductive negotiations between top world powers and Iran over its disputed nuclear programme.

The meeting will be staged just two weeks before the European Union imposes a full embargo on Iranian oil -- a measure aimed at crippling the government's economy and forcing it to halt its uranium enrichment programme.

Russia and Iran enjoy close commercial and military ties that have made Moscow into an influential voice in the negotiations.

But the Kremlin has recently expressed growing worry that Iran may be pursuing the development of a nuclear bomb that could destabilise the region and prompt military strikes from either Israel or the United States.

The ministry said Lavrov would devote "particular attention to preparations" for the Moscow meeting but gave no other details.

Lavrov's visit comes one week after President Vladimir Putin met his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on the sidelines of a regional summit in Beijing where he defended Tehran's right to a "peaceful" nuclear programme.

"But I want to emphasise that it is peaceful that we are talking about. You know our position," Putin told Ahmadinejad in Beijing.

Obama speeds up limited air strike, no-fly zones preparations for Syria

    DEBKAfile Exclusive Report June 11, 2012, 9:29 AM (GMT+02:00)

US President Barack Obama has ordered the US Navy and Air Force to accelerate preparations for a limited air offensive against the Assad regime and the imposition of no-fly zones over Syria, debkafile reports. Their mission will be to knock out Assad’s central regime and military command centers so as to shake regime stability and restrict Syrian army and air force activity for subduing rebel action and wreaking violence on civilian populations.

debkafile’s sources disclose that the US President decided on this step after hearing Russian officials stating repeatedly that “Moscow would support the departure of President Bashar al-Assad if Syrians agreed to it.” This position was interpreted as opening up two paths of action:

    1. To go for Assad’s removal by stepping up arms supplies to the rebels and organizing their forces as a professional force able to take on the military units loyal to Assad. This process was already in evidence Friday, June 8, when for the first time a Syrian Free Army (which numbers some 600 men under arms) attacked a Syrian army battalion in Damascus. One of its targets was a bus carrying Russian specialists.

    2. To select a group of high army officers who, under the pressure of the limited air offensive, would be ready to ease Assad out of power or stage a military coup to force him and his family to accept exile.

The US operation would be modulated according to the way political and military events unfolded.

Washington is not sure how Moscow would react aside from sharp condemnations or whether Russia would accept a process of regime change in Damascus and its replacement by military rule.

Islamic world must have nuclear weapons, says Iran

    6:26 PM 06/10/2012

Iran is now telling the world that in order to confront aggression from America and Israel, it must have nuclear weapons.

Official Iranian media outlets published a commentary Sunday titled “The necessity for the Islamic world to have the atomic bomb,” laying the groundwork for Iran’s refusal to accept limits on its illicit nuclear program.

The essay’s author, Alireza Forghani, is the former governor of southern Iran’s Kish Province and an analyst and a strategy specialist in the camp of the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

“The fatwa from Imam Khomeini [the founder of Iran's Islamic revolution] said ‘all Islamic countries have Islamic blood,’” Forghani wrote. “Therefore the Islamic world should rise up and shout that a nuclear bomb is our right, and disrupt the dreams of America and Israel.”

“Having a nuclear bomb is our right,” he argued. “Israel would have been destroyed completely 30 years ago” but has survived because it has nuclear weapons. (RELATED: Complete coverage of developments in Iran)
In February, Forghani laid out the legal case for the annihilation of Israel and all Jewish people. That treatise, which ran in all the Iranian regime’s media outlets, openly called for a pre-emptive strike on Israel.

Among the state-run media carrying Forghani’s new piece — which argues that Iran should have an atomic bomb – is the major outlet Fars News Agency, which is run by the Revolutionary Guards and thus represents the views of the Islamic regime.

“The Islamic republic, after the victory of the 1979 revolution, faced a hard reality of its enemies trying to overthrow the only true Islamic republic in the world,” he wrote. “The enemies of the Islamic republic of Iran, headed by America with cooperation by its European allies and some in Asia — [and] using the tools such as the United Nations, other international organizations and NATO — have continuously pursued their goal of overthrowing the … government.”

America is the main enemy of Iran, Forghani argued, and is the only country that has used the atomic bomb and brags about its nuclear arsenal, creating fear in nations that might want to challenge it.

“Why is it that only those carrying water for America must have the bomb?

Why is it that Pakistan can be the only Islamic country to have the bomb?

Until when should the Islamic world remain afraid and obey America?” Forghani demanded to know.

Syrian and Lebanese Muslims have to constantly worry that if their governments do not cooperate with America or Israel, “NATO’s bastard soldiers will attack them,” he added.

“The Islamic republic is one country that is surely threatened by America.

We have experienced their failed attacks before, and there is no doubt that it will attack Iran, which it calls the center of all evil,” Forghani wrote. “We might be able to confront America with asymmetrical warfare, but how far will that take Iran? There is no guarantee that if things heat up America will not use its nuclear arsenal against Iran just as it has done before [in Japan].”

Forghani recalled the Cold War’s “Mutual Assured Destruction” policy that kept the United States from bombing the Soviet Union. If Iran had nuclear weapons now, he reasoned, America could not do to Iran what it has done to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Negotiations between Iran and six world powers have so far failed. Iran refuses to suspend nuclear enrichment and won’t allow inspection of suspected sites, even as it insists that the only solution to the dilemma is for the West to accept a nuclear Iran. The Islamic regime continues, meanwhile, to warn that any foreign aggression will result in a devastating counterattack.

In a clear indication that Iran might either have a bomb or be close to developing it, Forghani wrote, “Imam Khamenei has stated that with whatever arms they attack us, we will respond similarly. The need for having the atomic bomb in order to respond to any aggression is now.”

Officials in the Islamic regime, including its supreme leader and military commanders, have promised the “full annihilation of Israel” and the demise of America. “We’re still on a hillside,” Khamenei said in a recent speech.

“When the Iranian nation reaches the peak, all enmities [and] evils will end.”
In a separate blog article, Forghani quoted the Quran, An-Nisa 74: “Let those fight in the cause of Allah who sell the life of this world for the hereafter. To him who fights in the cause of Allah — whether he is slain or gets victory — soon shall we give him a reward of great value.”

I'll give you ten bucks we'll see further escalation and atrocities in Syria for a bit longer. Next will be staged negotiations where Russia feigns an oversight role. Following this production will be a regime change. This will take the pressure off the region, at least momentarily while Iran continues to assemble its nukes. Watch the bouncing ball.

This is BS. Washington knows PRECISELY how Moscow is going to react and they are scared pissless over it.

And the REASON they are scared is:

Iran is now telling the world that in order to confront aggression from America and Israel, it must have nuclear weapons.
Because with all the obfuscation and bullshit and hiding behind hidden agendas and all the other CRAP for the last 10 years that has gone on, Iran is on the BRINK of being able to test a real weapon and both Moscow and Washington KNOW IT.

We have put it off, put it off and put it off until they are ready, everyone with a fucking CLUE knows they are ready and they will test a nuke soon enough.

Russia WANTS them to have it to unbalance the Mid East even more.....

    /sigh

All we can do is sit and watch incompetence, cowardliness and idiocy push us to the brink of global thermonuclear war.

    It's coming folks.

    Brace yourselves.

'Israeli strike on Iran means new war for US'

If Israel strikes Iran on its own accord it would involuntarily drag the US into a new war in the Middle East - one that America is very reluctant to fight, Yiftah Shapir, the head of the Middle East Military Balance Project, shared with RT.

*The expert from the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) in Israel does not believe a military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities will force Iran to abandon its nuclear program.

RT: Why do you think it is not in Israel’s interest to launch a military strike on Iran?

Yiftah Shapir: I don’t think Israeli force is large and strong enough to actually destroy the Iranian nuclear weapon project. It might cause some damage, but it would not destroy it. It would not achieve anything.
RT: Do you think the US would consider cooperation with Israel in such a strike, quietly?

YS: First of all there is no “quietly” in this issue because things would tend to come out sooner or later. On one hand, President Obama has not ruled out an American strike yet. Even though his military is very reluctant to get into another war in the Middle East. I don’t think he’d do it during an election year.

RT: So can that be a reason for Israel to launch a strike now, before a new American leadership is in place?

YS: There is a theory in the US that this is what we are going to do. That Israeli attack might draw the US into that war, probably prematurely. It would force the US to get into that war because an Iranian counterattack would almost undoubtedly be targeted against the US as well as Israel. So the US would be drawn. I think such an action without American consent would cause a great damage to Israeli strategic relations with the US for an extended period of time.

RT: Do you think that the hard sanctions recently declared against Iran are enough to satisfy the Israeli government not to strike Iran?

YS: They might satisfy it for the time being. I think that the general attitude in Israel is the sanctions are not enough. They are not going to convince Iran, even if they would be much harsher, not to pursue its nuclear weapon project.

RT: How do you measure Iran’s capability to launch a counterattack?

YS: Iran has a capability of launching a direct missile attack on Israel with few hundred Shahab missiles. What would be an effectiveness of such an attack and accuracy of these missiles – I don’t know. I don’t suppose it would be worse than we had in 1991 when we were under Iraqi missile attack. Damage was caused but no one actually got killed. But there is no guarantee that this is not going to happen. We have now the Arrow (anti-ballistic missile) we did not have then, which would be able to intercept at least some part of this missile attack. The greatest damage to Israel would be, as in the case of Katyusha rocket attack, the economic damage, because under such an attack everything would stand still.

RT: What about Arab support for an Israeli strike on Iran? You mentioned America’s involvement, but surely Israel also needs Arab assistance in the form of landing and fueling assistance (in case of an air strike on Iran)?

YS: Many Arab countries are very cautious of Iran. For example Saudi Arabia has been urging the UN to attack Iran for many years now. They really are terrified. On the other hand assistance to Israel is still out of their agenda in the open. Israel would have to fly over Arab countries. It has done so before and it could be done without consent, even a covert one.

We could get assistance and landing rights if not from Saudi Arabia than from the United Arab Emirates. The distance from the UAE to northern Iran is as far as from Israel, maybe even longer, so these landing rights would be helpful only in case of attacking targets in Southern Iran.

Another covert aid might be, though problematically, given by Azerbaijan, which is on the north side of the Iranian border. They have now good relations with Israel. The trouble is to get to Azerbaijan you have to fly over Turkey. With the current relations between Israel and Turkey, I don’t see Turks giving Israel any aid.

RT: Why is Syria so important for Western nations? Could it be the last obstacle before invasion of Iran?

YS: That is a tough one. Why Syria is important? Is it important to the Western states? I don’t see any Western country intervening into Syria as they did in Libya.

RT: Yet there is so much attention and focus on Syria, particularly on President Bashar Assad’s handling the situation. How do you explain that?

YS: That would be expected from the West. Syria is much closer to Europe and Syria has traditional relations with countries like France. And with such atrocity that takes place (in Syria) they cannot stay quiet.

RT: Is there a connection between what is happening in Syria and what is happening in Iran?

YS: There is an obvious connection because the Syrian regime has been Iran’s closest ally for over two decades. This is the main route from Iran to Lebanon, into the whole region influencing Israel. If Assad’s regime falls, Iran is standing to lose very strong ally, because any government that is going to replace Assad, be it a Western-oriented democracy, which is not very likely, or Muslim Brothers, who are Sunnis and hostile towards Shia Iran, any new regime would be hostile towards Iran or very far from cooperating with Iran as much as Bashar Assad’s regime has been. Iran is standing to lose.

    RT:
Is the alleged supply of weapons to the Syrian opposition enough to upset the regional arms balance?

    YS:
Right now no. I heard Saudi Arabia started to supply them with weapons. But we’re talking about light weapons. I don’t think this would change the balance of power in the Middle East. They (the Syrian opposition) are still very weak.

    RT:
Is it possible there will be simultaneous interventions into Syria and Iran?

    YS:
It does not seem likely. I don’t think the EU or NATO are going into Syria. And I don’t see the EU or NATO taking part in the attack against Iran. The US could try to draw Europeans into attacking targets in Iran, but it doesn’t seem very likely.

Iran claims arrests in nuclear slayings

    Published June 14, 2012

    Associated Press

TEHRAN, Iran – Iran's intelligence service says it has detained suspects linked to assassinations of Iranian nuclear experts that Tehran claims are part of covert operations led by Israel.

Thursday's report by the official IRNA news agency quotes Iran's intelligence department as saying the suspects had alleged roles in the killings of a nuclear researcher in late 2010 and two employees at Iran's main uranium enrichment facility in January.

The report did not identify the suspects or give other details. Iran previously has reported arrests linked to the slayings.

In May, Iran hanged a man convicted in the killing of a nuclear physicist in early 2010.

At least five Iranian nuclear scientists have been killed since 2010. The U.S. and Britain have denied any roles, but Israel has remained silent on Iran's accusations.
