Iran fear prompts Israeli reactor shutdown

Israel has shut down its nuclear reactor in Dimona in the Negev Desert for fear of a sudden rocket attack from Iran.

Generals are quoted as saying the Iranians possess about 15 thousand missiles capable of reaching Israel.

The Dimona reactor has been working since 1964.

Iran moves centrifuges from Natanz to Fordow

Iran is planning to make its underground uranium enrichment plant at Fordow operational soon, the Reuters agency reports quoting the head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization Fereydoun Abbasi.

He said that the plant could produce 20%-enriched nuclear fuel.

According to the Iranian Kayhan newspaper, up-to-date centrifuges have been moved from the nuclear center in Natanz to Fordow.

The West accuses Iran of developing nuclear weapons but Tehran denies the accusations, insisting that its nuclear program is for civil needs only.

Russian naval flotilla docks in Syria: state media

A large Russian naval flotilla led by an aircraft carrier has docked in the Syrian port of Tartus in what Damascus state media hailed on Sunday as a show of solidarity by close ally Moscow.

The six-day port call by the carrier group in the Mediterranean port where Russia has a recently expanded naval base is intended to boost ties at a time when President Bashar al-Assad's government is under mounting Western and Arab pressure over its bloody crackdown on dissent, the Syrian press said.

"The port call is aimed at bringing the two countries closer together and strengthening their ties of friendship," the official SANA news agency quoted a Russian naval officer it named as Yakushin Vladimir Anatolievich as saying.

"The commanders of the Russian naval vessels docked in Tartus took turns to express their solidarity with the Syrian people," the news agency added.

The governor of Tartus province, Atef al-Nadaf, paid tribute to the "honourable position adopted by Russia which has stood by the Syrian people." The Al-Watan newspaper, which is privately owned but close to the government, reported last week that the carrier Admiral Kuznetsov was escorted by a large flotilla including submarines.

Despite strong Western criticism, Russia has stood by its Cold War ally in the face of a mounting international outcry over the death toll from security force efforts to crush nearly 10 months of anti-government protests.

In October, Moscow joined Beijing in vetoing a Western-drafted UN Security Council resolution that would have threatened Damascus with "targeted measures" if it failed to rein in its security forces.

Yep, only 1 of the Kuznetsov-class in service. The other would have been the Varyag.

Russia also had 4 of the Kiev-class carriers which were more equivalent to the US LHDs/LHAs. 2 of those got sold to China, 1 got refitted and sold to India, the other got scrapped.

The Russian navy has never really placed much of an emphasis on naval aviation. They focus more on surface and subsurface combatants.

    Perfectly cloaked Axis war strategy.

Each Axis member focuses on a specific segment of battlefield theater and actively works on building up that area of their military under the guise only of projecting within their spheres of influence.

No one Axis power is seen with all the armamant puzzle pieces in their hands. Individually they're only seen with an inferior amount of military resources to ever become a direct threat to take down America individually and or any waning western segments of a dwindling American alliance.

It's only when you add up all their military build ups collectively; plus all the hidden facets they're feverishly working on that gives a much clearer picture what and where each member will play in the coming multinational Axis war against America.

Russia says it regrets Iran uranium enrichment decision

    By REUTERS
    01/10/2012 18:54

MOSCOW - Moscow regrets Tehran's decision to enrich uranium near the city of Qom, Itar-Tass state-run news agency quoted a foreign ministry official as saying on Tuesday.

"Moscow has met reports on the start of uranium enrichment at an Iranian plant near Qom with regret and concern," the agency quoted a Foreign Ministry official as saying.

"We should recognize that Iran is continuing to ignore the demands of the international community that it respond to their concerns regarding its nuclear program," the official was quoted as saying.

Ahmadinejad, Chavez mock US, joke about bomb

    By REUTERS
    01/09/2012 23:53

Venezuelan, Iranian leaders express mutual respect, fire anti-US snipes as Ahmadinejad starts Latin American trip.

CARACAS - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Venezuela's Hugo Chavez lavished each other with praise on Monday, mocked US disapproval and joked about having an atomic bomb at their disposal.

"Despite those arrogant people who do not wish us to be together, we will unite forever," the Iranian president told socialist leader Chavez at the start of a visit to four left-leaning Latin American nations.

    RELATED:
US: Iran uranium enrichment a 'further escalation'
Khamenei: Iran won't yield to Western sanctions

Despite their geographical distance, the fiery anti-US ideologues have forged increasingly close ties between their fellow OPEC nations in recent years, although concrete projects have often lagged behind the rhetoric.

Ahmadinejad was in Venezuela at the start of a tour intended to shore up support as expanded Western economic sanctions kick in over the Islamic Republic's nuclear program.

"The imperialist madness has been unleashed in a way that has not been seen for a long time," Chavez said in a ceremony to welcome Ahmadinejad at his presidential palace in Caracas.

Both men hugged, beamed, held hands and showered each other with praise.

As he often does, the theatrical and provocative Chavez stuck his finger right into the global political sore spot, joking that a bomb was ready under a grassy knoll in front of his Miraflores palace steps.

"That hill will open up and a big atomic bomb will come out," he said, the two men laughing together.

"The imperialist spokesmen say ... Ahmadinejad and I are going into the Miraflores basement now to set our sights on Washington and launch cannons and missiles ... It's laughable."

US officials from President Barack Obama down have expressed disquiet over Venezuela's close ties with Iran. They fear Chavez will weaken the international diplomatic front against Iran and could give Tehran an economic lifeline.

The United States and its allies believe Iran's nuclear policy is aimed at producing a weapon. Iran says it is only for peaceful power generation.

As well as Venezuela, Ahmadinejad plans to visit Nicaragua, Cuba and Ecuador -- a visit that Washington has said shows its "desperation" for friends.

Brazil notably absent from Ahmadinejad's agenda

Those nations' governments share Chavez's broad global views, but do not have Venezuela's economic clout and are unable to offer Iran any significant assistance.

Regional economic powerhouse Brazil, which gave the Iranian leader a warm welcome when he visited during the previous government of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, was notably absent from his agenda this time.

Analysts are watching closely to see if Chavez will back Iran's threat to close the Strait of Hormuz, the world's most important oil shipping lane, or how much he could undermine the sanctions by providing fuel or cash to Tehran.

Ahmadinejad, who is subordinate to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on foreign policy, has said little about the rising tensions with the West, including the sentencing to death of an Iranian-American man for spying for the CIA.

The Venezuelan and Iranian leaders mostly limited their comments on Monday to mutual adulation and anti-US snipes.

"President Chavez is the champion in the war on imperialism," Ahmadinejad said.

"The only bombs we're preparing are bombs against poverty, hunger and misery," added Chavez, saying 14,000 new homes had been built recently in Venezuela by Iranian constructors.

Report: Israel preparing for nuclear Iran within a year

U.K.'s Times newspaper cites report by Israeli think tank that Israel is readying for Iran with nuclear capabilities within twelve months.

    By Haaretz

Israel is preparing for an Iran with nuclear capabilities within the next 12 months, according to a report by the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), an Israeli think tank.

The U.K. daily Times newspaper published extracts of the report by the Tel Aviv University institute on Monday, according to an AFP report.

In a photo from 2009, Iranian technicians work at a facility producing uranium fuel for a planned heavy-water nuclear reactor, just outside the city of Isfahan.

The INSS was asked to prepare possible scenarios in case Iran carries out nuclear weapons tests by security, intelligence and diplomatic officials, AFP reported the Times as saying.

According to INSS predictions, Iranian nuclear weapons tests would change the balance of power in the Middle East region.

If Tehran carries out nuclear weapons tests, the U.S. will offer Israel a defense pact, but would urge Israel not to respond with an attack on Iran, according to AFP.

Russia would be expected to sign a deal with the U.S. in order to prevent armament in the region, and Saudi Arabia would be likely to develop its own nuclear capabilities, according to the report.

On Monday, the UN International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that Iran had begun uranium enrichment at Fordow, near the Shi’ite holy city of Qom, and said all atomic material there was under its surveillance.

Diplomats in Vienna, home of the IAEA, said earlier on Monday that Iran had begun refining uranium to a fissile purity of 20 percent at Fordow.

Iran to kick off World War Three

    10.01.2012

The world is perhaps standing on the brink of another major war, which may kick off in Iran. Sources close to special services of different countries even come up with dates when the war may begin. The Southern Caucasus borders on Iran. Russia's borders are near the country too. GeorgiaTimes and a scientist of politics of the Tbilisi State University (Georgia) tried to predict what consequences the armed conflict may lead to for separate countries of the region.

The war may begin when Israel strikes "nuclear" objects in Iran. The United States will support the attack. If it happens, the new large-scale war will become inevitable. Iran is not Libya, and not even Iraq. In addition, anti-Iranian enemies have failed to build the "axis of hatred" around Iran.

Therefore, many countries in the region will support Iran either directly or by implication. In particular, it goes about China. Chinese President Hu Jintao stated that if the USA or any other country attacked Iran, China would take responsive measures immediately. As for Moscow, sources at Russia's Defense Ministry said that the forces in the region had already been mobilized in case of a possible war.

Many Iranians come to Armenia, a republic of the former Soviet Union, for weekends. Women feel more liberated there, whereas men can drink cognac freely. The times, when Iran was separated from the Caucasus with the iron curtain of the Soviet Union, have become a thing of the past. Nowadays, for many residents of Armenia and Azerbaijan, Iran is not an exotic state at all.

Armenia and Azerbaijan only border on Iran; the countries can only careless about the problems of their neighbor. However, it only seems so. The war with Iran, if it ever happens, is not going to be a regional conflict.

Georgian scientist of politics, Solomon Lebanoidze, is pessimistic about the future of the region. As he said in an interview with GeorgiaTimes, the war in Iran is very likely to happen. "It may happen that this war may grow into World War III. No one is going to stay aside. There are many nuances here that will not give any country of the Caucasus an opportunity to remain a serene harbor," the expert said.

Russia will obviously stand up against the war with Iran. It will not be possible for Russia not to be involved in the conflict. Russia may come into a military alliance with China in case of the conflict. The alliance may gradually develop into the anti-Western coalition of forces against Israel and the USA, if they get involved in the war too.

"If the war begins, the Russian army base in Armenia will find itself isolated.

If it happens, Russia may try to take measures to make a corridor via Georgia, the expert believes. "Georgia and Iran have pragmatic and friendly relations. I believe that Georgia will try to play a passive role in the process," the scientist of politics said.

According to the Nezavisimaya Gazeta newspaper, Russia is already concerned about the security of its army base in Armenia. Servicemen's families have left the base, whereas the personnel have moved to another area, closer to the borders with Turkey.

The isolation of the Russian base in Armenia may push Azerbaijan towards another war for Nagorny Karabakh. "Azerbaijan may use Russia's weakening position in Armenia and launch the war for the liberation of Karabakh. The way how the war develops depends on larger participants, such as the United States and Turkey. I do not think that the States will be passive in this situation," the scientist of politics said.

For the Southern Caucasus, the war with Iran may resemble the time in the beginning of the 1990s, when the region was "depressurized" from its common condition. Many conflicts and wars sparked because of them, and many of them are still unsolved.

Ex-adviser: Obama ready to strike to stop Iran

    By BLOOMBERG
    10/01/2012

Dennis Ross says US president has “made it very clear” that he would be willing to use force if necessary.

No one should doubt that US President Barack Obama is prepared to use military force to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon if sanctions and diplomacy fail, the president’s former special assistant on Iran said Monday.

Obama has “made it very clear” that he regards a nuclear-armed Iran as so great a threat to international security that “the Iranians should never think that there’s a reluctance to use the force” to stop them, Dennis Ross, who served two years on Obama’s National Security Council and a year as US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s special adviser on Iran, said in an interview.

“There are consequences if you act militarily, and there’s big consequences if you don’t act,” said Ross, who in a two-hour interview at the Bloomberg Washington office laid out a detailed argument against those who say Obama would sooner “contain” a nuclear-armed Iran than strike militarily.

The administration considers the risks of permitting a nuclear-armed Iran to be greater than the risks of military action, said Ross, who last month rejoined the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, a research group.

His comments came the day after Obama’s top civilian and uniformed defense officials said that developing a nuclear weapon would cross a red line, precipitating a US strike.

“They need to know that if they take that step, they’re going to get stopped,” US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Jan. 8 on CBS News’s “Face the Nation.” On the same program, General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, said he has been responsible for planning and positioning assets to be ready if ordered to take military action.

    Challenging Iran’s claim

Iran, the world’s third largest oil exporter, insists its nuclear program is for civilian energy and medical purposes only. The International Atomic Energy Agency issued a report last Nov. 8 detailing nuclear activities it said had no other use than for military purposes, bolstering the US case that Iran is seeking the capability to produce nuclear weapons even if it hasn’t yet made a decision to do so.

While some Iran analysts have suggested an alternative to military strikes would be to “contain” a nuclear Iran, much as the US managed to live with a nuclear-armed Soviet Union, Ross said the analogy doesn’t translate to the situation in the Mideast. Countries in the region, he said, lack equivalent Cold War-era “ground-rules,” lines of communication, and a protected second-strike nuclear capability, which deterred a surprise attack during US-Soviet tensions.

A nuclear-armed Iran would set off a atomic arms race among neighbors, pose a risk of proliferation to other states or terrorist groups, and increase the chances of a nuclear strike resulting from miscalculation, he said.

    Potential for miscalculation

“You don’t have any communication between the Israelis and the Iranians. You have all sorts of local triggers for conflict. Having countries act on a hair trigger - where they can’t afford to be second to strike, the potential for a miscalculation or a nuclear war through inadvertence is simply too high,” he added.

Ross acknowledged that a military strike would have serious consequences as well, including Iranian retaliation, either directly or through terrorist proxies around the world, a possible effort to shut down the Strait of Hormuz, and a spike in oil prices.

Understanding those risks, “nobody uses military force lightly,” he said, and “nobody commits to using military force one minute before they have to.”

    US credibility

Ross underscored that US willingness to stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons affects decision-making in other countries that fear Iran, including Israel and Gulf states. If the White House abandoned a pledge to stop Iran made by Obama and former US president George W. Bush before him, the US would lose all credibility, he said.

“I wouldn’t discount the possibility that the Israelis would act if they came to the conclusion that basically the world was prepared to live with Iran with nuclear weapons,” he said. “They certainly have the capability by themselves to set back the Iranian nuclear program.”

Ross stressed he believes there is still time for diplomacy to work, as the financial pain of sanctions may yet persuade Iran to abandon its suspected nuclear weapons program.

“Force is not inevitable,” he said. “Diplomacy is still the desired means. Pressure is an element of the means.”

    Oil embargo

Coordinated efforts to tighten penalties, including the European Union’s preliminary agreement on an oil embargo, new US sanctions on the Central Bank of Iran, and pressure on Japan and South Korea to reduce their imports of Iranian oil, may finally persuade Iran’s leaders to give up the program rather than suffer a shutdown of their economy, Ross said.

The latest measures are the first “really affecting the core of their revenue, which is their sale of oil,” Ross said. Historically, “when they’re really pressured, they look for ways out.”

The leaders of Islamic Republic of Iran only accepted a cease-fire with Iraq, halted the assassination of Iranian dissidents in Europe, and abandoned the enrichment of uranium in 2003 when “it wasn’t worth the cost” anymore, Ross noted.

The latest round of punishing sanctions target oil sales, which fund a majority of Iran’s government revenues, according to the International Monetary Fund.

Iran is “feeling pain in a much more dramatic way” than ever, Ross said.

    Iranian ‘Bluster’

He dismissed threats by certain Iranian officials to retaliate against oil sanctions by closing the Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of the world’s oil transits, as “bluster” aimed to send a message at home and abroad, as Iranian leaders vie for power in a struggle that Ross said is as intense as any since the aftermath of the 1979 Islamic revolution.

The IAEA yesterday confirmed that Iran has begun enriching uranium to as much as 20 percent U-235 at the underground Fordow underground site near the holy city of Qom, as Iranian leaders had pledged to do last year. The site is monitored by IAEA inspectors to detect any attempt to enrich uranium to the 90 percent level necessary for a nuclear bomb.

“There really is no justification for it,” Ross said of the latest enrichment activities. “I don’t think there’s a whole lot of doubt that they are embarked on a program that can produce, at a certain point, weapons.”

/shrug. No clue. He's mad because I made a comment about Europeans. I guess he should learn to get over such wide brush strokes. I mean after ALL Europeans make the same comments about "You Americans".

    It's just the same.

I don't like hypocrites at all and I'm not going to back down any more with anyone.

If someone want to make implied comments about Americans, or me personally, I'll kick them in the nuts from now on.

I'm sick of people taking everything I say personally and screaming about me "attacking" them or "their ideas".

If they don't have thick enough skin, or they can't intelligently defend their "ideas" they can leave or pound sand.

I think you might have said something to me awhile about "echo chambers" here.

To be honest, I don't WANT too diverse an opinion here. People who want to take the side of Socialism DO NOT BELONG ON THIS SITE.

People who defend Liberalism, and OBAMA, do NOT belong on this site.

People who believe that Socialism and Communism are "best for America" DO NOT BELONG ON THIS SITE.

People who believe in ISLAM - sorry folks, this ain't the US government and we can tell you to go fuck yourselves. We don't believe in Islam. We don't want Sharia LAW in America.

All of them can go fuck themselves.

If you defend socialism and communism, Islam and anti-American ideas... well, fuck you and the horse you rode in on. I'll kick you off the site from now myself.

I am never going to back down on MY BELIEFS which are AMERICA.

So... Peterle and anyone else that doesn't like what I have to say, tough shit!

I am not awesome. I'm just me, but damn it, I'm an America and I have a RIGHT to my opinion and my opinion is RIGHT. I don't pull shit out of my ass, believe in Conspiracy Theory and I stand on PRINCIPLES.

I'm pretty God Damned tired of people from other countries whining about us "intervening" or "invading" when those countries aren't even involved in their own protection, they expect America and her Allies to do that. And then BITCH about us.

I'm tired of Americans who believe this bullshit as well. America can NOT and SHOULD not isolate itself from everyone else. We need to get back to what America stands for, FREEDOM, not just for ourselves. For EVERYONE.

And I'm sick and tired of people trying to scare me into shutting up, or shutting down.

    FNC reporting...

Obama administration has warned Iran this morning "not to cross the red line". Any attempt or movement to close the strait of Hormuz will result in "significant response" by the United States.

We have placed a second Aircraft Carrier in the region along with support fleet, 15000 infantry troops in Kuwait and we have other assets in the area.

This story is getting deep. FNC just reported that the "warning" we sent came directly from Obama himself.

Get this though, going directly to one of Iran's TOP Ayatollahs!

Interesting - since we HAVE NO DIPLOMATIC TIES WITH IRAN RIGHT NOW!

So - tell me, how does the President do this without going through the State Department - unless he's a King now.
