If there was any doubt before, the United States government on Monday wanted to make one thing clear.

Islam is a religion.

The pronouncement, filed by the U.S. Department of Justice in a Rutherford County court, was in response to a lawsuit filed by critics of a proposed mosque near Murfreesboro. Opponents of the mosque on Veals Road want to block its construction. A question at the heart of the suit is whether Islam is recognized as a legitimate religion in the United States.

U.S. Attorney Jerry E. Martin said his office and the Department of Justice had been watching the lawsuit unfold and couldn't sit idly by as the opponents questioned whether Islam is a religion or a political movement bent on supplanting United States laws with Muslim laws.

"All three branches of government have repeatedly recognized Islam as a religion," Martin said Monday during an afternoon press conference.

"Presidents, as far back as Lincoln and Jefferson and as recent as President George W. Bush, have, indeed, publicly recognized Islam as one of the world's largest religions."

Attorneys suing to stop the construction of the mosque declined to comment through their law offices.

But Laurie Cardoza-Moore, one of the leading critics of the mosque, still questioned whether Islam is a religion.

"The bottom line is, is the Department of Justice going to sanction a religion that kills homosexuals, that kills apostates who leave Islam and convert to Christianity, who kill women because they ask for divorce," she said. "I guess we're going to have to go back to the Constitution and see how it defines what makes a religion."

The Islamic Center of Murfreesboro is trying to a build new worship center after outgrowing the location on Middle Tennessee Boulevard.

About 18 months ago, religious leaders there decided to develop land they bought at Veals Road and Bradyville Pike to host their new 52,000-square foot center, which would house worship services, receptions, classrooms, a gym and a pool.

Outside, they hope to build sporting areas, a playground, a pavilion and a cemetery on the 15-acre site.

The lawsuit filed by opponents in Rutherford County accuses officials of not properly notifying the public about the process of approving the proposed mosque.

It also argues that Islam is not a valid religion.

The government was blunt in disputing that notion, saying that every court has held that Islam is a religion, protected under the First Amendment.

"A mosque is quite plainly a place of worship, and the county rightly recognized that it had an obligation to treat mosques the same as churches, synagogues or any other religious assemblies," said Thomas E. Perez, Assistant U.S. Attorney General for Civil Rights. "This is not only common sense; it is required by federal law."

Martin went further on Monday, saying that unless there is an error in the approval process, the mosque should be built.

"It has been approved by Rutherford County, and as long as that approval process was free of any errors, we believe… that the mosque should be constructed," he said.

Other worries raised

Aside from procedural problems and questioning whether Islam is a religion, some opponents say they fear the new center will be used for terrorism purposes, despite the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro's presence in the community for some 30 years.

Tensions have been high on the issue since it was approved in May, with competing rallies in and around Murfreesboro for and against the mosque's construction. Both sides have also reported to authorities that they received death threats.

On Aug. 28, someone set construction equipment ablaze at the site of the proposed mosque, a crime that remains unsolved.

Authorities found gasoline underneath a construction truck and noticed someone in a car who appeared to have been "watching" the fire. No arrests have been made.

The lawsuit challenging the mosque is expected to resume Wednesday morning in Rutherford County Chancery Court.

Order blocks Oklahoma constitutional amendment

U.S. District Judge Vicki Miles-LaGrange handed down the order after an Oklahoma man filed a lawsuit claiming the amendment stigmatized his religion and would invalidate his will, which he said is partially based on Islamic Law, also known as Sharia Law.

“My constitutional rights are being violated through the condemnation of my faith,” said Muneer Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Oklahoma. “Islam was the target of this amendment. This amendment does not have a secular purpose.”

The measure, State Question 755, was approved with 70 percent of the vote in the Nov. 2 general election. The judge's order prevents the state Election Board from certifying the results of that vote, which it had planned to do Tuesday afternoon.

The order will remain in effect until a Nov. 22 hearing on a preliminary injunction.

Awad, a law school graduate who has not been admitted to practice in Oklahoma, was congratulated by Muslims and other supporters following Miles-LaGrange's ruling. Between 20,000 and 30,000 Muslims live in the state.

“We're confident in the case. We're confident in the claims we are making,” said Awad, who filed the lawsuit Thursday. “Today's ruling is a reminder of the strength of our nation's legal system and the protections it grants to religious minorities.”

The measure's author, Rep. Rex Duncan, R-Sand Springs, attended the brief court hearing and said afterward he was surprised by Miles-LaGrange's decision.

“It thwarts the will of the people,” said Duncan, an attorney who was elected district attorney in the northern Oklahoma counties of Osage and Pawnee in the general election.

Duncan has said the constitutional amendment was not intended as an attack on Muslims but an effort to prevent activist judges from relying on international law or Islamic law when ruling on legal cases.

In 2007, Duncan rejected a Quran as a gift from a council created by Gov. Brad Henry, explaining that “most Oklahomans do not endorse the idea of killing innocent women and children in the name of ideology.”

The constitutional amendment was one of several on Oklahoma's ballot that critics said pandered to conservatives and would move the state further to the right.

Among other things, Awad's lawsuit alleges the measure transforms Oklahoma's Constitution into “an enduring condemnation” of Islam by singling it out and barring courts from referring to Islamic law. It also alleges it violates the First Amendment's prohibition against laws regarding the establishment of religion.

Legal experts also have questioned the measure. Joseph Thai, a professor at the University of Oklahoma's College of Law, said the ballot measure is “an answer in search of a problem” and that there is no danger of international law or Sharia law overtaking the American legal system.

I work commercial construction, and I’m just waiting for Muslims to try and circumnavigate some of our safety rules.

Muslim woman says roller-skating rink discriminated against her

A Muslim woman claims that a Connecticut roller-skating rink discriminated against her because it wouldn't allow her to skate in her headscarf.
Marisol Rodriguez-Colon, 40, said she was "mortified" when she and another female relative showed up for a niece's birthday party at the Ron-A-Roll rink in Vernon and were barred at the door.

The venue's rules, posted at the entrance, read: "No Hats. No Headwear. No Exceptions."

Colon said her religious hijab shouldn't count under that policy -- and tried to appeal to a rink manager.

"We wear this for religious reasons," Colon said. "But they didn't want to hear that."



The manager, Colon said, gave the women two choices: take off the headscarves, or wear a helmet over them.

Taking off the hijabs was "not an option," Colon told WTIC-TV in Hartford.

She said she has worn the traditional headscarf for 16 years and has it on "wherever I go."

She and the other relative went back to their car and missed the party.

"I wear this with pride," Colon said. "I was mortified -- by asking someone to wear a helmet you are actually ostracizing us.

"You are singling us out and showing everyone there is an issue -- that something is wrong with these two women."

Ron-A-Roll management issued a statement spelling out its "no headwear" policy. It said helmets are offered for safety purposes.

"You are not allowed -- you are not welcome here. That is what that says to me," Colon said of the statement.

She said she was insulted that the rink would deny entrance to people "because of what they believe and what they are wearing because of those beliefs."

The Council on American-Islamic Relations said yesterday it filed a complaint with Connecticut's Human Rights Commission.

Several years ago, University of Albany student Zahra Shah was barred from wearing her headscarf at an upstate New York roller rink.

That arena, citing insurance reasons, also banned headwear.

An employee at the time told Shah that other skaters could trip and get hurt if the hijab fell off.

When Shah explained that she wore the scarf for religious reasons, one rink employee told her it was like a cowboy "religiously" wearing a cowboy hat.

After a barrage of phone calls from activist groups and others, the rink management apologized and said Shah could skate with her headscarf.

U.S. Department of Justice Sues School for Denying Teacher Leave for Muslim Pilgrimage



(Dec. 14) -- The U.S. government is suing a suburban Chicago school district for refusing to grant a Muslim teacher unpaid leave to go on a Hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia.

Attending the annual pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca once in a lifetime is one of the five central tenets of the Islamic faith. Safoorah Khan, a middle school teacher in the Berkeley school district, about 15 miles west of Chicago, applied for an unpaid leave of absence in 2008 to go on the Hajj, but her request was denied.

She ultimately quit her job to attend and later filed a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

The U.S. Justice Department filed a complaint Monday in a Chicago federal court alleging that the school district violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by refusing Khan's time-off request and failing to accommodate her religious practice.

Khan began teaching math at the district's McArthur Middle School in 2007. According to court documents, she wrote to the school superintendent in August 2008, asking for an unpaid leave from Dec. 1-19 that year to travel to Mecca on the pilgrimage.

The district denied her request, noting that the "purpose of her leave was not related to her professional duties," the Justice Department said. The legal challenge filed Monday states that "because Berkeley School District denied her a religious accommodation, the district compelled Ms. Khan to choose between her job and her religious beliefs, and thus forced her discharge."

The lawsuit aims to prevent school districts from discriminating against teachers on the basis of religion. Khan also wants her job back, along with back pay and other damages for pain and suffering, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

The district did not return a message left by The Associated Press seeking comment, the news agency said.

Mandatory Arabic Classes Coming To Mansfield Texas

MANSFIELD (CBSDFW.COM) – Some Students at Mansfield ISD schools could soon be learning Arabic as a required language. The school district wants students at select schools to take Arabic language and culture classes as part of a federally funded grant.

The Foreign Language Assistance Program (FLAP) grant was awarded to Mansfield ISD last summer by the U.S. Department of Education.

As part of the five-year $1.3 million grant, Arabic classes would be mandatory at Cross Timbers Intermediate School and Kenneth Davis Elementary School. The program would also be optional for students at T. A. Howard Middle School and Summit High School.

Parents at Cross Timbers say they were caught off-guard by the program, and were surprised the district only told them about it in a meeting Monday night between parents and Mansfield ISD Superintendent Bob Morrison.

The DOE has identified Arabic as a ‘language of the future.’ But parent Joseph Balson was frustrated by the past. “Why are we just now finding out about it?” asked Balson. “It’s them (Mansfield ISD) applying for the grant, getting it approved and them now saying they’ll go back and change it only when they were caught trying to implement this plan without parents knowing about it.”

Trisha Savage thinks it will offer a well-rounded education. “I think its a great opportunity that will open doors. We need to think globally and act locally.”

Mansfield ISD says in addition to language, the grant provides culture, government, art, traditions and history as part of the curriculum.

Some parents had concerns over religion. “The school doesn’t teach Christianity, so I don’t want them teaching Islam,” said parent Baron Kane.

During Monday’s meeting Morrison stressed the curriculum would not be about religion, but about Arabic language and culture, similar to the Spanish curriculum already in place in the district.

Kheirieh Hannun was born in the Middle East but raised in the U.S. She believes giving students the option to learn Arabic will give her son and others like him the option to learn more about their culture. “It was surprising, but I think it’s okay, and it will help come down on the stereotype.” Hannun says she is hopeful the class could broaden the minds of not only students, but also parents.

The FLAP grant was awarded to only five school districts across the country, including Mansfield.

MANSFIELD — Mansfield ISD officials apologized to parents Monday night over a plan to teach Arabic culture in every class at one school.

Many parents said they hadn't been told about the mandatory curriculum change.

Parents and teachers packed a Mansfield ISD school cafeteria to hear learn more about why Arabic language and culture could soon be embedded in everything their children learn.

Veronika Webb is a sixth-grader at Cross Timbers Intermediate School. Her parents adopted her from Russia when she was three years old. She had to learn English, but her language challenges weren't over.

"She had to learn Spanish when she was in elementary school, and now they want her to learn Arabic," said Bobbi Webb, Veronika's mom.

The Mansfield ISD plans to use grant money to start a program that would look at almost every subject from an Arab perspective, but Monday was the first time they've explained it to parents.

"Our goal was to focus on the development of the curriculum before we actually rolled that out to parents," said Assistant Superintendent Lamar Goree.

Some parents are upset because no one has shown them what information will be taught under the program.

"It's a porterhouse steak that's been served up on a trashcan lid," said parent Mark Henderson. "We love the idea; we just want to be sure we're involved in its development."

The idea is to embed Arabic culture in all facets of the school day — from discussing the Arabic roots of the word "algebra" to serving a Middle Eastern dessert at a class party.

"I like the idea because a lot of people ... they assume everything Islamic or anything Arabic is terrorist," said parent Kay Hannun.

A major concern is that Arabic culture cannot be taught without including Islam, something Mansfield ISD denies.

"If it were up to me, it would just be Christian, but my student can benefit from learning different religions," Bobbi Webb said.

Hannun agrees. "Just teach the culture, how we are, because everybody has this stereotype, and I would like this to be erased."

The grant funds an Arabic language class that will start when Cross Timbers students start middle and high school.

For now, Mansfield officials say the program is on indefinite hold. They're starting this program over at square one — this time involving parents every step of the way.

We checked around to see what other districts offer.

Fort Worth ISD provides instruction in nine languages, everything from Chinese to Russian.

Arabic is not one of the languages.

The Dallas ISD did not return our calls.

We did learn that a public charter school in Coppell offers Arabic. Manara Academy says there is a demand for Arabic speakers.

Texas school district to require Arabic language instruction

Some school children in Texas' Mansfield Independent School District will soon be required to learn Arabic, thanks to a federal government grant.

According to a Dallas CBS News affiliate, Mansfield ISD received the Foreign Language Assistance Program (FLAP) grant last summer. It is one of only five districts in the country to be awarded the grant.

Parents were caught by surprise and learned of the grant Monday night in a meeting with district Superintendent Bob Morrison.

As part of the five-year $1.3 million grant, Arabic classes would be mandatory at Cross Timbers Intermediate School and Kenneth Davis Elementary School. The program would also be optional for students at T. A. Howard Middle School and Summit High School.

According to a PDF file provided by the school district, Cross Timbers was selected because it has "the highest percentage of native Arabic speakers in the district." The district sees these students as a resource to help develop the program.

Students will not only learn the language - the curriculum will include Arabic culture, government, art, traditions and history.

Some parents were concerned their children would be taught Islam as part of the program.

“The school doesn’t teach Christianity, so I don’t want them teaching Islam,” said parent Baron Kane.

Although Superintendent Morrison reassured parents their children would not be taught Islam, the concern is valid since many Arabic nations - like Saudi Arabia - are governed by Sharia law, which is based on Islam and teachings from the Koran.

Arabic has been identified by the federal Department of Education as a "language of the future", and the district believes the grant provides an excellent opportunity to prepare students for the economy of the future.

According to the district, the program provides several benefits:

• This project is federally funded for $ 1.3 million dollars over a 5 year period.
• This project adds a critical foreign language option for students in MISD.
• Successful Arabic foreign language studies (Arabic I, II, III) increases college and scholarship opportunities.
• This allows students to be prepared to compete globally for jobs that are not in existence yet.
• This project supports the diversity within MISD.
• This project allows students and teachers to learn about the Arab impact on our country.
• This grant allows for us to develop a partnership with the University of Texas at Austin.

Some, like Kheirieh Hannun, believes the program will help tear down some of the stereotypes people have of the Arabic culture, but the move may cause concern for those who see a creeping Islamization of America.

Anjem Choudary, who once said “the flag of Islam will fly over the White House,” says he will lead a demonstration rallying Muslims to establish
Sharia law across the United States.

Choudary, 43, called Americans “the biggest criminals in the world today” during an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity this month.

Choudary, who is the former leader of the outlawed British-based group Islam4UK, says the March rally at the White House is being organized by the extremist group Islamic Thinkers Society, which is based in New York.

“The event is a rally, a call for the Sharia, a call for the Muslims to rise up

At the rally, we will also declare to the world that Muslims are innocent of the crimes committed on 9/11 and we demand a new independent investigation and an end to the illegal wars.

WASHINGTON – Three British Islamic activists are planning a pro-Shariah law rally in front of the White House next week, arguing that it is the solution for all of America's problems.

The March called Shariah-4-America will call on American Muslims to advocate Shariah law, and for Americans to run the country's business by Shariah.

The Muslim clerics are Anjem Choudary, Abu Izzadeen and Sayful Islam, all of whom have been associated with Sheikh Omar Bakri Muhammad's group al-Muhajidoun.

Sayful Islam says the message is clear: The American dream is a farce.

"The message we're going to present is two-fold. The first is the fallacy of the American dream. The American dream has become a nightmare. The message of freedom and democracy has failed the people it's trying to help," Islam remarked.

"The American people are suffering and are seeing oppression. They need to remove the tyrants of our time. The biggest tyrant of our time is Barack Obama, the American president," Islam commented.

Islam says the second part of the message is Shariah law.
"Shariah is the solution for all of the problems that mankind is facing today, economically, socially, judicially and politically. Islam is the solution and Shariah is the perfect system that needs to be implemented," Islam claimed.

Islam says the activists are starting the Shariah-4-America campaign outside the White House because of its symbolic value.

"The White House is the symbol of America and its call for freedom and democracy. We want to show that the White House is no longer the centerpoint of the world and that everyone can no longer look to it as a sign of freedom and democracy," Islam claimed further.

"It's in contrast to the Black House which is in Mecca in Saudi Arabia. We must make that (the Black House) the focal point of the people. They should no longer look to the White House for freedom, but look toward submission to the creator," Islam commented.

March co-organizer Anjem Choudary says the event will highlight a historic date in Islamic history.

"We want to invite the Muslims and non-Muslims in America to think about Islam as an alternative way of life. What took place in Egypt and Tunisia and what we're seeing now in Libya is people fighting against oppression," Choudary claimed.

"As far as Islam is concerned, oppression is not having put Mubarak in charge or Ben Ali (the Tunisian leader). Oppression is those people who do not survive by the divine law," Chourdary said further.

"Just as Muslims are obliged to call for Shariah in Muslim countries, they are equally obliged to call for Shariah in non-Muslim countries. As the bastion of freedom and democracy and the center of the Western world, it is only appropriate that the call for the Shariah should be there (at the White House," Choudary said.

"We believe that we should be propagating Islam to the British, to the Americans, to the French and other nations because we believe that (Shariah) is superior and that is the way forward for mankind," Choudary also said.

Abu Izzadeen is the third member of the group.

Izzadeen was sentenced to four and a half years in prison in Britain for encouraging Muslims at a London mosque to join the Mujahadeen and fight British and American troops in Iraq.

A report in Family Security Matters says that before this conviction, Izzadeen was deported to Lebanon in 2005 with cleric Omar Bakri Muhammad. Lebanese authorities said that Izzadeen could not have refuge in Lebanon because Izzadeen was a British citizen.

Izzadeen went to prison under the 2000 British Anti-terrorism Act and was released in May 2009 for good behavior.

The Daily Mail reported that a parole violation sent him back to jail in July 2009, but Izzadeen is out of prison again and free to organize the Washington, D.C., rally.

Centre for Social Cohesion Director Douglas Murray explains that Omar Bakri Muhammad was the leader of al-Muhajidoun before he was deported to Lebanon and that Choudary took over as leader of the group. Murray adds that Choudary started another group, Islam4UK.

A story in the British newspaper, The Guardian, says that al-Muhajiroun and Choudary's organizations were outlawed by an order from former Home Secretary Alan Johnson. Membership in either group carries a 10-year prison term.

Murray also says he will be surprised if Abu Izzadeen is let into the United States.

"I would be amazed if the American border authorities allow him in. I think they should obviously not allow him in. Anyone convicted of terrorism in the U. K. should obviously not be going to the U. S. to do the same thing there," Murray stated.

"To give you an idea (of Izzadeen's activism). He was quoted in 2007 as saying, 'So we are terrorists. Terrorists fight the enemies of Allah. The Americans and British only understand one language. It's the language of blood,'" Murray related.

Murray says Izzadeen went on to justify the killing and decapitation of the British hostage Ken Bigley.

"It isn't a matter of him making inciting speeches. It is the matter that he has been convicted of inciting murder for fundraising for terrorism," Murray continued.

The Department of Homeland Security is not commenting on whether any of the march organizers have been barred from entering the United States.

Choudary believes that because both Izzadeen and Islam are British citizens, they should be able to enter the country without applying for a visa.

Choudary also cites the Constitution and the First Amendment principles as guaranteeing him a right to promote Islam.

Islam agrees, also citing America's principle of Freedom of Speech.

"This country (the U. S.) has freedom of speech. Let the Muslims have their turn now. We've heard enough from the West and Western commentators," Islam said.

Islam believes the Muslims have the momentum and the campaign in the U.S. is designed to coincide with the upheavals in the Middle East.

"It's about time the Muslims stand up and raise their call for Islam and the Shariah. What we're trying to show the people is that the tyranny they're facing is man-made. The head of this serpent is the United States of America. They're the ones promoting this all across the world," Islam said.

Choudary says the date of the event is the 87th anniversary of the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, the last caliphate and the last nation with Shariah law.

"I intend to have with me Sayful Islam and Abu Izzadeen to address the masses on how Islam will solve their problems and bring them out of the hegemony of man-made law," Choudary described.

"The Muslims around the world are currently boiling, rising up and getting rid of dictators and oppressors and part of that oppression is the presence of American bases in American countries, American citizens who are looking after their own interests at the cost of the welfare of the ordinary people in those countries," Choudary claimed.

The British cleric adds that Americans are fighting against the Muslim tide.

"This is not a time for the Americans to have any kind of presence in Muslim countries. They need to withdraw from there and we will be giving that warning as well that the Muslims are arising," Choudary remarked.

"If you want to help them to establish the Shariah, or if you want to help them to develop. That's fine. But if you want to maintain your interests by trying to force upon the Muslims democracy and freedom in our countries, we believe that the Shariah is the way forward and we will be giving them a warning," Choudary stated.

Murray believes that Omar Bakri Muhammad, Anjem Choudary and their followers have always been "problematic" for the press. He says this has created an unfortunate picture in the eyes of the public.

"They are very, very willing to say exactly what it is they want to do and the result is a lot of people have dismissed them as clowns or loud mouths and so-on," Murray explained.

"Conclusive research and comprehensive research by the Centre for Social Cohesion has revealed that between one-in-six and one-in-seven people convicted in the U. K. of Islamic terrorism related offenses in this decade have been linked to, or been members of, this group," Murray detailed.

"So I would strongly advise that the people don't take them lightly. Don't think that it's all talk. Do make sure these people are not allowed into the U. S.," Murray cautioned.

The Islamic Demolition of the Statue of Liberty

One of the founding principles of the Islamic constitution is to ensure that all sovereignty and supremacy belongs solely to God; the Shari’ah is a practical manifestation of this sovereignty and supremacy because it seeks to establish His command in society.

The status of a nation subsequently does not depend on its number, strength or technological advancement, but rather how much it submits to the commands of God. When a nation seeks to be free from such commands, then ultimately it will meet its destruction.

The Statue of Liberty, designed by Frederic Bartholdi, stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbor; representing Libertas, the Roman (false) goddess of Freedom, it is symbolic of the rebellious nature of the US constitution that elevates the command of man over the command of God.

In Islam, the public veneration of idols and statues is strictly prohibited.

This has forced sincere Muslims to develop realistic plans that will aid in the removal of the Statue of Liberty.

Due to the scale of the task at hand, it is highly likely that rigorous safety checks will need to be employed before the demolition of the Statue of Liberty can commence; thus as a temporary measure, it is proposed that a large burkha is used to cover the statue, thereby shielding this horrendous eye sore from public view as well as sending a strong message to its French creators.

Post demolition, it is recommended that a minaret be built as a fitting replacement, allowing the glorification of God to be proclaimed daily as well as act as a powerful reminder of the superiority of Islam over all other ways of life.
