Sex Offender Arrested Re-Entering U.S.
SAN ANTONIO -- A convicted sex offender was arrested in San Antonio Wednesday after he illegally sneaked back into the country, police said.

Angel Ruiz Bernal, 35, was taken into custody following a routine traffic stop in the 1600 block of Harness Lane.

He was arrested eight years ago and served a five-year sentence for rape. After being released from prison, Bernal was deported to Mexico.

Bernal was a passenger in a vehicle allegedly in the possession of cocaine. When the officer ran his name in the national crime database, an outstanding warrant showed up for Bernal's arrest, said Nina Pruneda, of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

"We also understand that he has an extensive criminal history ranging from sexual offense on a child to aggravated assault, so this is not a person we want out in the community," Pruneda said.

Bernal is being held in the Bexar County Jail without bond. He will be turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement when his sentence on the state charges is completed.
