Sheriff: Ramsey Co., MN Deputy Caught On Camera Abusing K-9

    June 26, 2015

A Ramsey County Sheriff’s deputy faces criminal charges after he was caught on surveillance cameras abusing his K-9 partner at a Carlton casino.

The Carlton County Sheriff’s Office says 48-year-old Brett Arthur Berry was at Black Bear Casino on June 14 for a canine training and certification event.

Deputies were called to the casino just before 3 a.m. on June 15 on a report of animal cruelty caught on camera involving Berry, who had been asked to leave the casino’s Cobalt Lounge earlier in the night by deputies due to staff complaints.

Berry was observed on camera leaving the lounge, going back to his hotel room and then leaving with his K-9 partner five minutes later. He was then observed carrying the dog to his car while being visibly upset.

The accused was next seen on camera picking up the dog by the collar and throwing it to the ground. The K-9 then ran back to the casino and got trapped between entryway doors. Berry was seen catching up to his partner, and then repeatedly hitting the K-9.

The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office released a written statement Friday, saying they are “troubled” by the allegations.

“Deputy Berry was sent home from the K-9 trials and placed on administrative leave,” the sheriff’s office said. “The K-9 was evaluated by a veterinarian and no injuries were found. The K-9 partner is currently in the care of others.”

Berry was arrested and has been charged with two misdemeanor counts: one for assaulting a public safety dog and one for animal cruelty.

He is an 18-year veteran of the department and has received letters of recognition in the past. One complaint has been filed against Berry in his career, involving “poor public relations” during a traffic stop.

St. Louis Chief: Gunman 'Tried To Assassinate' Officer

    July 14, 2015

A gunman wearing a bandanna over his face opened fire on a uniformed St. Louis police sergeant before dawn Tuesday, peppering his windshield with at least a dozen rounds, and the police chief credited the officer's body armor with saving his life.

Police Chief Sam Dotson said the officer sustained a torso injury not considered life-threatening during the hail of gunfire on his private vehicle shortly before 5 a.m. in the city's tony Central West End neighborhood. Dotson called the attack a "brazen act of violence."

The officer, who was working security as a second job, managed to return fire and believes he may have wounded one of the four men who occupied the car from which the gunman emerged, Dotson said.

St. Louis police investigate the scene of a shooting where a gunman opened fire on a uniformed St. Louis police sergeant on Tuesday, July 14, 2015

The officer and the four suspects are black, police said.

"They targeted, they ambushed, they tried to assassinate a police officer," the chief told reporters outside the hospital where the officer was being treated and was expected to be released later Tuesday. "What we saw tonight are individuals that were armed, that targeted a police officer and had no second thoughts, no remorse about it at all."

"What we saw today are guns in the hands of criminals and their willingness to use them," Dotson said.

Dotson said the officer had been monitoring three people walking down the street, but did not engage them before they left the area.

Moments later, a silver or gray vehicle occupied by four people, including the walkers, pulled up in front of the sergeant's car, Dotson said. The gunman stepped out and began firing at the officer, then fled on foot as the suspect's car sped away.

The wounded officer drove after the gunman but lost sight of him in a parking garage, Dotson said, crediting the officer's ballistic vest for saving his life.

Investigators planned to obtain footage from an abundance of surveillance cameras in the area, Dotson said.

He did not release the injured officer's name but said he is a 16-year veteran of the force.

Dash-Cam Video Shows Orlando Police Officer Run Over

    July 15, 2015

Authorities on Tuesday released video in the hit-and-run involving an Orlando police officer during a traffic stop.

The incident occurred around 2:45 a.m. Monday near the McDonald's on Kirkman Road near Vineland Road.

Orlando police said Officer William Anderson was working "extra duty" when he conducted a traffic stop on a silver four-door sedan.

The video shows Anderson approaching the driver's side of the car when the passenger gets out and runs off. As Anderson goes after the passenger, the driver of the car struck Anderson and Anderson slid over the hood of the car.

Anderson fired his gun three times as he hit the ground, but the driver did not stop, police said. That person, identified as Edward Earl Kelty, was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center and remains in the hospital, but is expected to be OK.

Kelty was arrested Tuesday and charged with attempted second-degree murder on a law enforcement officer and resisting officer with violence. He will be taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center after his release from the hospital.

Local 6 has also learned the parents of the teens inside of the car are claiming excessive force.

Detectives said they have also identified two other people who they believe were in the vehicle.

"Thank you to the citizen that blocked Officer Anderson’s body as he laid in the road after he was run over," Orlando police said in an update Tuesday. "His actions prevented Officer Anderson from being struck by another vehicle."

Police said Monday afternoon that they had found the vehicle involved at 1859 Lake Pearl Drive in Gotha. The vehicle was found burned and the windshield shattered, according to police.

Anderson was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"I'm sick and tired of people running from police, not complying with police officers' orders," Orlando Police Chief John Mina said. "We're very upset that this individual tried to murder one of our police officers. This officer is out here trying to protect the community, and bad people are out here as well, trying to run over our police officers. I'm very upset."

OPD tweeted, "Please send good thoughts to Ofc. William Anderson, who has been admitted the hospital after being run over by fleeing suspect Monday a.m."

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS.

Second Arrest Made In Case Of Orlando Officer Hit By Car During Traffic Stop

    July 16, 2015

    Edward Kelty

Detectives have made a second arrest in the hit-and-run involving Orlando Police Officer William Anderson.

The 17-year-old Angel Nieves has been charged with tampering with evidence, police tell WESH 2 News. He is currently located at the Juvenile Assessment Center in Orlando.

According to police, the teen was inside the car when Anderson was run over by 17-year-old Edward Kelty, who is charged with attempted second-degree murder of a law enforcement officer and resisting an officer with violence.

Kelty was allegedly caught on camera running over Officer William Anderson early Monday morning, police said.

Around 2:45 a.m. Monday, Anderson, an eight-year veteran, was working off duty as security at a McDonald's in the 5400 block of South Kirkman Road when another officer reported gunfire in the area and he was called to assist, police said.

“He's responding to a call where shots are fired with possible suspects who, according to the video, were obviously trying to get away,” Orlando Police Chief John Mina said.

Anderson pulled over a car that he saw leaving the area.

Video shows Anderson walking up to the car with his gun drawn, at which point a passenger bolts out the door.

As Anderson moves toward the front of the car, he is run over.

The video then shows Anderson firing three shots, at least one of which wounded Kelty in the arm, officials said.

“We have physical evidence, we have forensic evidence and we have testimony that to put (Kelty) behind the wheel of the vehicle that ran over our officer. He was shot by our officer,” Mina said.

The car was found burning in Gotha on Monday afternoon.

Police are still searching for one other passenger who was inside the car at the time of the incident.

“Their time is coming. Eventually we'll arrest them as well,” Mina said.

Kelty's mother has filed excessive force complaints on behalf of her son.

Mina defended Anderson, saying he fired in self-defense.

“In my experience, (excessive force complaints) do just the opposite. It causes the person to be viewed with more scrutiny and it ends up causing them more problems in the long run. Especially, with something as blatant as this, where so clearly the officer is in the right,” WESH 2 legal analyst Richard Hornsby said.

Anderson is in stable condition at Orlando Regional Medical Center. Due to his injuries, he has been unable to speak in depth about the incident, police said.

Mina said he does not believe the incident calls for more patrol units in the area of Kirkman and Conroy roads.

Manhunt Underway For Killer Of Memphis Officer

    August 2, 2015

A manhunt was underway Sunday across Tennessee after a Memphis police officer was fatally shot during a traffic stop.

Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong said police received a call at about 9:18 p.m. Saturday about an officer being shot multiple times. The officer, identified by the Memphis Police Department as Sean Bolton, 33, died at a local hospital.

"There is a theme that black lives matter," a sullen Armstrong, who is black, said at a news conference. "At the end of the day we have to ask ourselves, do all lives matter? All lives matter ... and this is just a reminder of how dangerous this job is."

Armstrong said a member of the public used the officer's radio to report the shooting. Officers found Bolton at the scene. He was was taken to a hospital in critical condition, and was later pronounced dead, the police department said. He said police are using all available resources to find the shooter.

"It's a difficult time fro all the officers you see standing behind me and difficult time for the city as well," Armstrong said.

Mayor A.C. Wharton joined Armstrong in asking the prayers for the officer's family, the Memphis police department and the city. He also pointed to the proliferation of guns as adding to the dangers officers face.

"Once again, we won't make any political statements here, but this again is evidence that there are so many guns on our streets in the wrong hands," Wharton said. "Men and women in blue have rules of engagment they have to follow, but ... they are dealing with people who have no rules of engagement."

Bolton, who joined the force in 2010, served a tour in Iraq and studied political science at the University of Memphis, The Commercial Appeal reported.

Bolton is the third Memphis officer to be fatally shot in less than five years. Officer Tim Warren was killed while responding to a shooting at a downtown Memphis hotel in July 2011. In December 2012, Officer Martoiya Lang was killed while serving a warrant.

"Sadly to say, we've been here before," Armstrong said. "This is my third time in four years, and it doesn't get any easier."

    California Officer Killed In Shootout

    July 22, 2015

A San Francisco Bay Area police sergeant was shot and killed during an early morning traffic stop Wednesday, and authorities say the shooter hasn't been arrested.

Hayward police identified the officer as Sgt. Scott Lunger, 48, of Brentwood, California.

"This is a very devastating and dark day for the community and the Hayward Police Department," said acting Police Chief Mark Koller.

Lunger was shot about 3:15 a.m. after he stopped a white Chevrolet pickup that was swerving on the road and driving erratically, Koller said.

The driver stopped, and there was a confrontation. Koller said the driver shot Lunger without warning and that Lunger's partner fired back.

Lunger's partner radioed that shots had been fired and that an officer was down.

The partner was not injured. Koller declined to say Wednesday if the driver was shot or injured, citing an ongoing investigation.

"This investigation is in the early and crucial state right now," he said.

Police said they found a white pickup truck found in Oakland with bullet holes, a vehicle that matches a description of the truck involved in the shooting.

Koller said a "person of interest" is being held but has not been arrested or determined to be a suspect in the slaying.

Lunger was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, California, where he later died.

Lunger was on the force for 15 years and became a sergeant in 2009. He was on the gang and the SWAT units.

"He was an ideal police officer," Koller said.

Lunger's family, including two older daughters, have been notified.

Police Lt. Eric Krimm said the Alameda County Sheriff's Department, Hayward Police and the California Highway Patrol are investigating.

Lunger is the second San Francisco Bay Area police officer killed in the line of duty this year.

In March San Jose Officer Michael Johnson was shot and killed while checking on a mentally ill man who had threated to shoot himself and kill his wife. The man, 57-year-old Scott Dunham fired the fatal bullet. He was also shot and killed that day though he may have shot himself.

'Police Lives Matter': Louisiana Boy Thanks Local Law Enforcement

    July 18, 2015

A 9-year-old Louisiana boy found a special way to show his respect for law enforcement.

Jayden Witsell has made it his mission to hand out letters to officers one-by-one, along with a St. Michael coin for protection.

Jayden and an officer whose life he touched, Joe McMahan, appeared on "Fox and Friends Weekend" today.

"People don't really care about police officers, and I want to have more respect for them," Jayden explained. "When I heard about those two Hattiesburg officers getting shot, that's when I started."

McMahan, who works for the Slidell Police Department, revealed that he was driving one day when Jayden's mother actually pulled him over.

"I see her flashing her brights, and I'm thinking it's a citizen wanting directions or something," McMahan said. "So I pulled over. And at that time, that's when Jayden got out of the car and asked if he could give me something."

McMahan revealed that Jayden handed him an envelope that said "Police lives matter." Inside, it contained a touching message and a St. Michael coin.

"When I saw it, I knew what it was," McMahan said. "With all the negativity that's been going on with law enforcement, it's just nice to know that somebody is still thinking positively about us, and they still look up to us."

"It really made me remember why I became a police officer."

Birmingham Police Officer Beaten Unconscious By Suspect, People Put Pictures Of Bloodied Cop On Social Media To Mock Him

    August 9, 2015

A Birmingham police officer was beaten unconscious by a suspect on Friday after a traffic stop turned violent, but his ordeal wasn’t over there.

The officer, a detective and six-year veteran of the force, was lying bruised and bloodied on a sidewalk after a suspect took his gun and pistol-whipped him when a crowd began to gather. But instead of helping the badly injured officer, some of the people there took pictures and posted them on social media, mocking the cop and praising the man who beat him.

The incident took place after a traffic stop on Friday morning. Police said the officer pulled over 34-year-old Janard Shamar Cunningham, also known as Janaris Shavar Cunningham, when the suspect allegedly got out of his car and began arguing with the officer.

Cunningham, who was being stopped in connection to some burglaries in the area, allegedly began fighting with the officer and gained control of the man’s handgun. The suspect allegedly pistol-whipped the officer until the cop was on the ground, bloody and motionless.

Police pursued Cunningman as he fled and caught up with him about one mile away. He was taken into custody.

But as medics tended to the fallen officer, some people took pictures and mocked the cop on Twitter and Facebook.

Other officers were enraged at how the man was treated.

“He was laying there lifeless and people were standing around taking pictures,” said Birmingham police Sgt. Heath Boackle, president of the Fraternal Order of Police. “If the tables were turned, and that was a suspect lying there, they would be rioting.”

Boackle said the incident underscores the need for better relations between police and the community, and the perception about the dangers of police work.

“If the officer would have shot him, then he would have shot an ‘unarmed man.’ Instead, he took the gun from the officer,” Boackle said of Friday’s incident. “The officer had every right to shoot him. We’re lucky we’re not talking about him killing the officer.”

Janard Cunningham has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly pistol-whipping the police officer, WIAT reported. The detective was taken to the hospital but was later released and is now recovering at his home.

Carson City, Nevada Sheriff's Deputy Killed, Suspect Dead In Early Morning Shooting

    August 15, 2015

UPDATE: Tonight at 8 p.m. there will be a candle light vigil at the Peace Officer Memorial site in Carson City at Nevada State Legislature. Please come out and show your support for the Carson City Sheriff's Office Deputy who gave his life, for his family....both blood and in blue, and the entire community of Carson City as we all mourn the loss of a true hero.

A Carson City Sheriff's deputy was killed in a shooting early Saturday morning during an exchange of gunfire on Montez Drive on the northeast side of Carson City. The suspect also died, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

The following is a statement by Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong:

At 2:18 a.m., Carson City Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the report of a domestic battery involving physical injury at the 4100 block of Montez Drive in East Carson City. As officers arrived at the scene, they reported physical injury to the female. Within minutes, the male suspect came out of the house and opened fire on the officers, killing one. Additional units arrived in the area and secured the residence, evacuating three children (ages 8-13) and one adult. The suspect was located dead at the scene.

The Carson City Sheriff’s has relinquished the investigation of this incident to the Reno Police Department.

Officer and family information is not being released at this time.

The area has been cordoned off and the Carson City Sheriff crime lab unit, Nevada Highway Patrol and Douglas County Sheriff deputies are on the scene.

""The heart of our community goes out to the family of the slain officer who was killed in the line of duty earlier this morning," said Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell. "It is a reminder of the dangers that our first responders go through each and every day while keeping us safe. We will do everything possible to help the family of this officer. We will also do everything possible to help our public safety heroes get through this traumatic tragedy.

Please keep the officer's family and our first responders in our thoughts and prayers."

Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval also released a statement:

“The Nevada family lost one of its finest public servants today. I was deeply saddened to hear the news of the untimely death of a Carson City Sheriff’s Deputy and pray for strength and peace for his family and fellow officers during this time of tragedy. The death of this dedicated officer is a sobering reminder of the sacrifices our men and women in uniform courageously make each and every day as they protect our communities.”

Briefings were held this morning and afternoon. Flags were being lowered around the city. The deputy was the fifth Carson City officer to die in the line of duty, and the first since 1963.

Due to recent events, the Joining Forces Pedestrian Operation scheduled for Monday August 17th has been cancelled. In addition, the EUDL operation scheduled for this weekend has also been cancelled.

A Carson City employee who lives a block away said he heard loud banging noises and thought someone was breaking into his vehicle and went to check. He said his wife said to him that she heard a succession of gunfire. He went out and looked and moments later police vehicles swarmed the area.

    A reader sent the following:

I live in east Carson and was up at about 2:30AM this AM (Sat 8-15-15) and heard 10-15 shoots fired followed by multiple sirens over the next 45 minutes and also a helicopter flying north along what looked like the freeway & east on hwy 50."

Louisiana Trooper Shot In Head, Critically Injured During Traffic Stop, Police Say

    August 23, 2015

A Louisiana State Trooper was shot in the head and critically injured while trying to stop a driver suspected of being drunk or drugged Sunday evening in southwestern Louisiana, state police officials told the Associated Press.

The trooper, who state police Col. Michael Edmonson identified to the Associated Press as Master Trooper Steven Vincent, 43, was listed in critical condition at a local hospital following the incident near Bell City, La., according to Fox-8.

Edmonson said Vincent is a 13-year veteran of the force and comes from a law enforcement family.

One of his brothers is also a state trooper and another is a town police chief, Edmonson said.

He said 54-year-old Kevin Daigle of Lake Charles, La., was arrested. Charges against Daigle will include attempted murder of a police officer, Edmonson said.

Vincent was shot after receiving a call that Daigle was driving erratically and had driven his pickup truck into a ditch.

Capt. Doug Cain, a state police spokesman, confirmed to the Associated Press that Trooper Vincent was shot in the head.

Edmonson says several civilians subdued Daigle, put the trooper's handcuffs on him and gave the trooper first aid.

Other drivers stopped to help, Sgt. James Anderson, spokesman for state police said.

"As I understand it, they rendered aid to the trooper, they called for help using the trooper's radio, and they detained the suspect," state police spokesman Sgt. James Anderson told the Associated Press.

He said Vincent was in critical but stable condition Sunday evening, and the man accused of shooting him was also in a hospital.

"He struggled with the guys who came to assist -- had some scrapes on him and so on," Anderson said.

He said police had received calls Sunday about a maroon Dodge pickup truck with a camper shell that was driving erratically. A bit later, it was reported in a ditch.

Edmonson, posted a message to the department's Facebook page asking for prayers for the injured officer.

The message's subject line was "Trooper Critically Injured — Prayers Needed."

"The entire LSP family is requesting your thoughts and prayers following the shooting of a Louisiana State Police Trooper in the Lake Charles area," Edmonson wrote in the post.

"The incident occurred as the Trooper conducted a traffic stop on a suspected impaired driver and was shot during the course of the interaction. The suspect was subsequently detained by passing motorists as additional citizens rendered aid to the Trooper until assistance arrived on the scene.

Further information and the Trooper's identity and status will be forthcoming as the investigation continues.

Please take a moment from your Sunday afternoon to send prayers and well wishes to the Trooper and his family in this critical time," Edmonson's message said.

Within an hour, 5,100 people had shared the post and nearly 2,000 had posted messages saying they were praying.

Edmonson said the officer's name and status will be released as the investigation continues.

Mississippi Deputy Shot At Traffic Stop, Police Seeking Suspect

    August 24, 2015

Officials say a north Mississippi deputy has been shot by a motorcyclist during a traffic stop but is expected to recover.

Authorities said Monday that the suspect fled, and they're looking for a black male driving a red speed bike with no license plate.

Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell says in a statement that Deputy Eric Sloan was shot about 3 a.m. Cantrell says Sloan had pulled over the motorcycle for speeding.

Cantrell says that when Sloan approached the motorcycle, the driver began shooting and hit Sloan in his protective vest, near the abdomen area.

Cantrell says Sloan is being treated at a hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. Officials have not released other details, including the deputy's race.

Michigan State Police Announce Death Of Trooper Chad Wolf Following Friday Crash

    August 28, 2015

    State Trooper Chad Wolf

Michigan State Police in a statement about 5:45 p.m. Friday announced that Trooper Chad H. Wolf died from injuries he suffered during a traffic crash about 6:30 a.m. Friday.

"It is with very heavy hearts that we confirm the death of one of our own, Trooper Chad Wolf," State Police Director Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue said in a prepared statement. "Our troopers know the dangers they face each time they put on their uniform, but the calling they feel to serve the public is stronger than any fear. Trooper Wolf will forever be remembered as a loving husband, dedicated father and outstanding public servant."

Wolf, 38, died surrounded by his wife, troopers, relatives and friends who spent much of Friday at Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc, where Wolf was taken after the crash.

It was still dark about 6:30 a.m. Friday when a 72-year-old Waterford man in a four-door car hauling an empty trailer hit Wolf, a motorcycle patrol trooper.

Etue said the driver proceeded "several miles" with Wolf trapped beneath his vehicle before pulling into a rest area in Holly. There several witness saw what had happened and called 911.

"We all wonder how that could happen," said State Police 1st Lt. Monica Yesh when asked how or why the man drove so far before stopping.

The "very cooperative" driver was questioned and released. State police officials wouldn't reveal the man's explanation.

No charges have been issued and the investigation is ongoing.

Wolf was riding his marked state police motorcycle in the right lane northbound on Dixie Highway in Springfield Township, located in northern Oakland County. The motorist, traveling in the left lane, abruptly changed lanes in an attempt to access the I-75 north entrance ramp, State Police First Lt. Michael Shaw said.

"The Michigan State Police is a very tight-knit family and today our hearts are aching and very heavy," Etue said. "Our troopers know the dangers they face each time they put the uniform on, but you need to know that the calling they have to serve the public is far stronger than the fear."

Wolf is a married father of four. He worked out of a detail based at the state police Second District in Taylor.

Previous assignments were at posts in Flint and Jackson. He joined the state police in 2008 after completing the 121st Michigan State Police trooper recruit school in Lansing.

At the time of his graduation, Wolf was living in Waterford.

"It's something I've been wanting for a long time," Wolf told MLive reporter Danielle Salisbury during an interview following his graduation from the state police academy.

Wolf's father is also a state trooper in Illinois.

Wolf grew up in northwestern Illinois and attended Pensacola Christian College in Florida, where he earned his bachelor's degree in youth ministries in 2001. Before becoming a trooper, he worked with troubled teenagers at Promise Village Home for Children in Davisburg.

Although troopers are testing on-body cameras for their motorcycle patrols, Shaw said Friday it was unclear if Wolf was wearing one.

Yesh spoke of Wolf's strong work ethic. "He's a good man, a family man," she said.

Since the founding of the state police in 1917, 52 troopers have died in the line of duty. Seven of those deaths were traffic related.

Manhunt Underway For Suspect Who Fatally Shot Deputy

    August 29, 2015

Harris County Sheriff Deputy Darren Goforth

Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy Darren Goforth was brutally gunned down while at a northwest Harris County gas station Friday evening, Sheriff Ron Hickman said.

Officials say a person of interest is being questioned, but they have not confirmed whether an arrest has been made. HCSO officials plan to address the incident at a 1 p.m. press conference Saturday.

Goforth was walking out of a Chevron gas station at the corner of Telge and West Road when a suspect approached him and shot him multiple times, Hickman said. Goforth had stopped at the gas station to fill up his patrol car, the sheriff’s office said.

Goforth, 47, was a 10-year veteran with the sheriff’s office, working the west district patrol division. He leaves behind a wife and two children.

“It appears to be an unprovoked, execution-style killing of a police officer,” Hickman said. “It strikes us all at the heart of public service. … We will hunt this person down and do our best to bring him to justice.”

Hickman said in his 45 years of law enforcement, he can’t recall another incident “this cold blooded and cowardly.”

According to Hickman, Goforth had finished investigating a traffic accident about 30 minutes before he was killed. Hickman said it doesn’t appear there were any connection between the traffic investigation and the shooting.

Sheriff’s officials believe the suspect is a dark-skinned male who’s about 5-feet 10-inches or 6-feet tall, 20-25 years old, wearing a white t-shirt and red shorts. Officials believe he fled the scene in a red- or maroon-colored Ford pickup truck, possibly an extended Ford Ranger. He was last seen traveling westbound on West Road.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Harris County Constable’s Office, DPS, Texas Rangers, the FBI and U.S. Marshals are assisting in the investigation and the search for the suspect and any motive.

Sheriff’s officials are looking into surveillance footage from the gas station and are asking for anyone with information into Goforth’s murder to contact the sheriff’s office.

Goforth was working alone Friday evening, which is common procedure, spokesman Thomas Gilliland said.

“This is an act of cowardice and brutality, the likes of which I’ve never seen,” said Harris County District Attorney Devon Anderson. “We will use all our resources to prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law.”

The 100 Club, a Houston-based nonprofit organization supporting dependents of law enforcement officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty, announced Saturday it will provide a $20,000 check to Goforth's wife, 12-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son to help with immediate financial needs.

Harris County Sheriff's officials believe this man is one who killed Deputy Darren Goforth Friday night at a northwest Harris County gas station.

Deputy Ambushed, Fatally Shot At Gas Station Near Houston

    August 29, 2015

The search for the suspect in the death of a uniformed sheriff's deputy who was shot several times while filling up his patrol car at a suburban Houston gas station continued Saturday, authorities said.

Deputy Darren Goforth, 47, was pumping gas about 8:30 p.m. Friday when a man approached him from behind and fired multiple shots, Harris County Sheriff's Office spokesman Ryan Sullivan told The Associated Press.

Police were speaking with a person who has information about the shooting and obtained a search warrant for the two-story brick home where the person lives, Harris County Sheriff's Office spokesman Deputy Thomas Gilliland said. No arrests have been made, Gilliland said, and the man is not a suspect or person of interest.

Nine patrol cars, including one with the words "crime scene unit" on the side of the vehicle, were parked near the home, which is about a quarter-mile from the gas station in Copperfield, a middle-class to upper middle-class area of Harris County that is unincorporated.

The search for the suspect, whom police have described as between 20 and 25 years old and about 5-foot-10 to 6feet tall, is ongoing. He was wearing a white T-shirt and red shorts and driving a red or maroon pickup-style truck with an extended cab.

Goforth was a 10-year veteran of the force, had a wife and two children, according to Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman.

"In my 45 years in law enforcement, I can't recall another incident so cold-blooded and cowardly," Hickman said, who added no motive had been determined.

An impromptu memorial had begun Saturday morning at the Chevron station pump that Goforth was using on Friday night, a pile of balloons, flowers, candles and notes, including one that said, "Gone but never forgotten R.I.P. Deputy Goforth." The gas station was open, but that pump was closed.

Brian McCullar knew Goforth because the deputy had patrolled his neighborhood, which is about two miles from the gas station, and spoke often.

"He was passionate about what he did," the 49-year-old said, adding, "We're still in shock. ... It's a huge loss for his family. It's a huge loss for this area.

"You're talking about a guy that made a difference."

Goforth had traveled to the Chevron station after responding to a routine car accident, Gilliland said.

"He was pumping gas into his vehicle and the male suspect came up behind him and shot the deputy multiple times," Gilliland told the Houston Chronicle. "The deputy fell to ground. The suspect came over and shot the deputy again multiple times as he lay on the ground."

Detectives were checking security camera video for possible clues.

"I can tell you with diligence and justice the suspect will be caught," Gilliland told the newspaper. "And he will be brought to justice ... This is a very callous individual."

Harris County Sheriff's deputies and homicide investigators joined officers from other agencies, including the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Houston Police Department, in the search.

"This is a very tough moment right now for the Harris County Sheriff's Office," Gilliland said. "Keep us in your prayers and in your thoughts."

Bob Goerlitz, president of the Harris County Deputies Organization, said the incident was "shocking."

"We've been warned of things like this, because of public sentiment nationally and events over the last few years ... It's just horrific. That's the only way to describe it."

Texas Deputy Executed Days After Black Radical Group Calls for Killing Cops

    August 29, 2015

A Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy was shot execution style at a gas station while reportedly in full uniform. The deputy was filling up his patrol car. Witnesses told Breitbart Texas the shooter shot the deputy in the back of the head and then three times in the back. This tragedy comes within days of a group of Black radicals calling for “lynching whites and killing cops,” as Breitbart Texas recently reported. Witnesses also told Breitbart Texas that the shooter was a black male.

The shooting occurred late Friday evening in Northwest Harris County just outside of Houston. One witness who spoke to this writer said he knew the deputy personally and had just spoken with him about five minutes before the shooting.

He said he saw the man shoot his friend and speed off in a red pickup truck. He said he followed the truck for about two miles until he lost it at a major highway intersection. The truck turned onto Highway 6 from West Road and disappeared.

Deputies in the area confirmed they were indeed searching for a red Ford Ranger pickup truck.

Two teenage girls told Breitbart Texas they saw the shooter fire one shot into the back of the head of the deputy who was simply getting gas for his vehicle. After the deputy fell, they heard three or four other shots. According to the first witness, those shots were fired into the deputy’s back.

The execution of the deputy came just days after black radicals went on an internet radio show hosted from Texas and called for the lynching of white people and the killing of cops to “turn the tide” against blacks being killed by cops. Breitbart Texas reported on Friday morning the details of the radio show and the comments that were made.

One black man spoke up saying they needed to kill “cops that are killing us. The other black male on the show said, “That will be the best method right there.”

The shooter is described as male, dark complexion, five-foot-ten to six-foot. He was said to be wearing a white t-shirt and red shorts.

Witnesses said a LifeFlight helicopter came and picked up the deputy to take him to the hospital, but they believe he was dead at the scene.

The first witness showed this reporter a photo of the deputy with his children. He was highly emotional as he was speaking. “He was the best guy you can imagine as a friend,” the witness said. “He was always coming to me and asking if he could do anything for me.”

Breitbart Texas will follow this developing story.

Activity seems to be ratcheting up. Is all out street war coming? Will society strike back against evil, self-centered radicals who care nothing about innocent lives and believe only vindictive bloodshed will even the score. Curious what's coming. All the while knowing that the feds will try everything to remove weaponry from good citizens, trying them for merely defending themselves, making good people's lives a living hell.

    Concerned and curious.

Slain Fox Lake, Illinois Police Officer Identified As Veteran Cop, Father Of Four

    September 1, 2015

Fox Lake police officer Charles Joseph Gliniewicz, 52, is seen in this undated handout photo.

The Fox Lake police officer shot and killed while chasing three suspects Tuesday morning was a 30-year veteran of the force who went by the nickname "G.I. Joe" and was married with four children, according to police and family.

"He's got four sons who are going to have to go on alone," said Terry Resetar, mother-in-law of the slain officer, Charles Joseph Gliniewicz, 52.

Gliniewicz radioed shortly before 8 a.m. while on routine patrol that he was going to check on some suspicious activity, Lake County sheriff’s spokesman Chris Covelli said during a news conference.

He then radioed he was in a "foot pursuit" but communication was lost after that, Covelli said. Other officers responded and found him shot near Route 12 and Sayton Road, he said.

Gliniewicz was discovered in a marshy area, stripped of his gun and other gear, according to Lake County Undersheriff Raymond Rose. He died at the scene, the undersheriff said.

Police established a perimeter and sent helicopters into the air as they sought three suspects, described only as a black male and two white males, Rose said. Several canine units were also dispatched, as well as SWAT teams in camouflage.

With the help of U.S. marshals, teams of police from throughout the county searched surrounding woods and businesses in the area. By 4 p.m., no arrests had been made as more than 100 police officers continued the search.

Parents were asked to pick up their children at local schools. The controlled release of students resulted in gridlock on Old Grand Avenue in downtown Fox Lake as parents picked up students at both the high school and nearby middle school.

Friends and colleagues remembered Gliniewicz as fun-loving and optimistic and dedicated to his work.

“This should never happen. Joey just loved his job,” said Thomas Poulos, a retired Waukegan police officer who said he went to high school with Gleniewicz in Antioch. They both graduated in 1981, Poulos said.

They stayed in touch and saw each other at local events and reunions, Poulos said, and it was clear that Gliniewicz – known as “Joe” or “Joey” in high school – enjoyed his job. Gliniewicz helped with the police department’s explorers program, which allows young adults to look into careers in policing.

“Loved his job, loved his kids, loved his wife, and he loved those explorers,” said Poulos, who now lives in California. “He was just a delight to be around. … Not a bad bone in his body.”

Fox Lake Mayor Donny Schmidt called Gliniewicz "a very dear friend."

"We lost a family member," he said at an afternoon news conference. "G.I. Joe was the father of four boys and a dedicated officer."

Rose said police across Lake County knew Gliniewicz for his affiliation with the local police explorers program.

“He, as the leader of that, had a tremendous impact on a lot of young people in the county,” Rose said.

Illinois FOP President Chris Southwood released a statement: “Today the Fraternal Order of Police lost a fellow member and brother who died heroically serving his community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the slain officer's family, friends and fellow police officers. He leaves a legacy of several decades of service to Fox Lake for which we are humbly grateful."

Hours after the shooting, Nathan Muehlfelder learned that he had lost one of his regular customers at Good Family Tattoo in Lake Villa.

Muehlfelder guessed that he had done half of Gliniewicz's body art, including tattoos of his police badges.

"He was a super nice guy. He was always loud when he was here, you could hear him a mile away," Muehlfelder said. "He always did things for the community, especially with the police explorers. He was always a really happy guy. Never angry, always laughing.”

"He was super strong for an older guy," he added. "He was ripped. He was doing what he liked to do."

Muehlfelder said it had been a few months since Gliniewicz came in for a new tattoo.

"He would also stop in just to say, ‘What's up?' " Muehlfelder said.

Residents in the area reacted with shock as armed police patrolled their neighborhoods and helicopters thumped overhead.

Jill Heyn and Brad Pekarik live in Ingleside, minutes from where the shooting occurred. They heard helicopters all morning as the search intensified and saw officers walking around Gavin Middle School down the block.

"My neighbor came out hysterical," said Brad Pekarik, who has lived here on Stanton Bay on Fox Lake for about 16 years. "It's not a good thing. Everybody's a little crazy these days."

Jill Heyn said it "feels like our paradise has been spoiled. It's just one story after another. Blue lives matter."

Michael Drewer, 35, of Fox Lake, owner of the Dipstick Oil Change, now surrounded by yellow police tape, said there were a half-dozen officers blocking off roads at Sayton and Route 12 when he arrived at work in the morning.

"Then a half-hour later, (the number of police) ballooned quite a bit," he said. "They checked our security video and then told me I wouldn't be doing any business today."

Covelli said the suspects should be considered dangerous and advised residents to stay indoors if possible.

Rose advised residents to call 911 "if they see anybody in their area … that doesn’t belong or doesn’t look right."

The search prompted officials at Grant Community High School to put the building on lockdown.

"Grant Community High School is currently in a lockdown at the request of the Fox Lake Police Department," read a statement posted at grantbulldogs.org. "A police matter is occurring in the community and for the safety of our students and staff they have requested we remain locked down."

Inbound and outbound service resumed on Metra's Milwaukee District North Line in the afternoon after being shut down for hours because of the search, the agency said. The Ingleside station remained closed.

Abilene Police Department Says Officer Found Dead in His Home Monday Evening Was Murdered

    September 1, 2015

    Officer Don Allen

The death of an Abilene Police Officer is being called a murder, according to police.

During a press conference that began at 4:00 p.m., Chief of Police Stan Standridge confirmed Officer Don Allen was murdered inside his home on Yucca Drive Monday evening.

Police have multiple leads, and they are working to exhaust them all as they close in on a suspect.

The FBI has joined the investigation, and multiple law enforcement agencies continue to search for answers.

They're looking into different motives, but don't want to rule anything out.

Officer Allen recently joined the Abilene Police force after serving in Cisco.

He was engaged to be married and is survived by his fiance, parents, and other family members.

Abilene Police remember him fondly in a press release, saying, "Before Abilene hired Don, he was working as an officer in Cisco, Texas. He had been with that agency for a year and 5 months. What really impressed us about Don was the fact that he applied for Abilene and indicated he wanted to go through our full police academy, versus an abbreviated lateral academy. This entailed another long and grueling six months of training. He completed the training, and in doing so gained lifelong friends and tremendous respect for fully adopting Abilene’s core values. Officer Don Allen graduated from Police Academy Class 51 along with 14 other officers. As a peace officer, he had accrued 1,400 training hours. His total service time as a Texas Peace Officer was 3 years and 3 months."

Visitation will be held on Thursday at Beltway South in Abilene from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

The funeral will be at Beltway on Friday at 10:00 a.m. with graveside services at the Clyde Cemetery.

City Manager Robert Hanna spoke on behalf of the City of Abilene saying, "This is a tragedy for the City of Abilene and I'm simply here to ask for your prayers. . . on behalf of the City, the City of Abilene expresses condolences to Officer Allen's fiance and family".

The Abilene Police Department is asking those who want to show support to bring healthy, hearty food to sustain authorities as the investigation continues forward.

A collection fund has been set up at the First Financial Bank to cover Officer Allen's final expenses.

As always, the department is touched by the overwhelming about of support being offered by the community.
