    Default RNC Convention

    It has begun:

Some turn violent in march to GOP convention

By AMY FORLITI, Associated Press Writer 22 minutes ago

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Protesters attacked members of the Connecticut delegation near the site of the Republican National Convention Monday in a demonstration where more than a dozen people were arrested by police using pepper spray amid window-smashing, bottle-throwing and tire-slashing.

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080901/...ntion_protests

It was a violent counterpoint to an otherwise peaceful anti-war march not far from the Xcel Energy Center convention site. Many protesters involved in the more violent protest were clad in black and identified themselves to reporters as anarchists. They wrought havoc by damaging property and setting at least one fire. Most of the trouble was in pockets of a neighborhood near downtown, several blocks from where the convention was taking place.

Police estimates of the crowd shifted several times during the event, ranging from 2,000 to 10,000. The crowd was clearly in the thousands. Late Monday afternoon, long after the antiwar marchers had dispersed, police requested and got 150 Minnesota National Guard soldiers to help control splinter groups near downtown.

Members of the Connecticut delegation said they were attacked by protesters when they got off their bus near the Xcel Center, KMSP-TV reported. Delegate Rob Simmons told the station that a group of protesters came toward his delegation and tried to rip the credentials off their necks and sprayed them with a toxic substance that burned their eyes and stained their clothes.

One 80-year-old member of the delegation had to be treated for injuries, and several other delegates had to rinse their eyes and clothing, the station reported.

Five people were arrested for lighting a trash bin on fire and pushing it into a police car, St. Paul police spokesman Tom Walsh said. Authorities didn't have immediate details on the other arrests.

The antiwar march was organized by a group called the Coalition to March on the RNC and Stop the War, whose leaders said they hoped for a peaceful, family-friendly event. But police were on high alert after months of preparations by a self-described anarchist group called the RNC Welcoming Committee, which wasn't among the organizers of the march.

About 20 people dressed in black tried to block a key intersection. Police quickly dispersed the group, then shot two tear gas canisters at them as the fled.

Pictures taken by Associated Press photographers showed officers using pepper spray on people who appeared to be trying to block streets.

Up to 200 people from a group called Funk the War noisily staged their own march. Wearing black clothes, bandanas and gas masks, some of their members smashed windows of cars and stores. They tipped over newspaper boxes, pulled a big trash bin into the street, bent the rearview mirrors on a bus and flipped heavy stone garbage bins on the sidewalks.

One member of the group carried a yellow flag with the motto "Don't Tread on Me." The group chanted: "Whose streets? Our streets!"

At one point, people pushed a trash bin filled with trash and threw garbage in the streets and at cars. They also took down orange detour road signs. One of them used a screwdriver to puncture the back tire of a limousine waiting at an intersection and threw a wooden board at the vehicle, denting its side. Another hurled a glass bottle at a charter bus that had stopped at an intersection. The bottle smashed into pieces but didn't appear to damage the bus.

After the official march ended, police spent hours dispersing smaller groups of protesters, employing officers on horses, smoke bombs and tear gas.

Protesters put eye drops in each other's eyes after police used chemical irritants such as pepper spray and tear gas. Some wore bandanas and masks to protect themselves.

Protesters were seen lying on an interstate exit ramp to block traffic in downtown St. Paul and linking arms to block other roads.

Terry Butts, a former Alabama Supreme Court justice who is a convention delegate, was on a bus taking delegates to the arena when a brick through the window sprayed glass on him and two others. Butts said he wasn't hurt.

"It just left us a little shaken," he said. "It was sort of a frightening moment because it could have been a bomb or a Molotov cocktail."

10,000 demonstrators flood St. Paul; 56 arrested

A man and his son tried to make their way through a riot police barricade as an estimated 10,000 marchers made their way down 7th street to the state Capital in downtown St. Paul for the March of the Republican Convention.

    Star Tribune
    Last update: September 1, 2008 - 6:38 PM

Hundreds of police officers, sweltering in heavy riot gear, swept in to block streets and protect delegate buses late Monday afternoon as St. Paul police requested help from 150 National Guard troops.

About 300 riot police in a V formation pushed about 200 protesters up against the water beneath the Science Museum at about 5:30 p.m.

Daniel Streltz, a photographer who was at the scene, said police ordered protesters to disperse, and the protesters sat and linked arms.

They were told they would be arrested if they didn’t disperse, Streltz said.
There were ambulances and police vans on the scene.

At least 56 people were arrested Monday, several were pepper-sprayed and tear-gassed and St. Paul hospitals reported six minor injuries and several heat-related cases in emergency rooms.

St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman praised officers for showing restraint and said a small number of law-breaking demonstrators marred what started as a peaceful day of free speech.

“Their efforts were nothing short of heroic,” Coleman said. “They did not fail. They did not take the bait. We’ve done what we could to offer unprecedented access so peoples’ voices could be heard. Unfortunately, very small handful of individuals decided to break the law.”

St. Paul Police Chief John Harrington said the trouble makers came from a half-dozen loosely organized groups totaling up to 180 people, representing a small fraction of the massive turnout Monday.

Earlier, shouting “our streets, their war,” more than 10,000 demonstrators flooded into downtown St. Paul’s narrow streets on the steamy first day of the Republican National Convention - greeting delegates with a hearty expression of displeasure for the Bush administration and John McCain’s presidential campaign.

While block after block of marchers chanted and peacefully waved signs, some bands of protesters splintered off and smashed windows at Macy’s and a downtown bank building.

Protesters came from across the state and the country on what was expected to be the largest demonstration of a week filled with protests.

They marched after a sun-drenched noontime rally on the state Capitol lawn, snaking down a route negotiated for months and circled in front of the Xcel Energy Center as delegates arrived for a session cut short by Hurricane Gustav.<>Cu Nyugen, a Vietnamese native who lives in Minneapolis, brought his 12-year-old daughter, Mai, on the eve of her first day of sixth grade.<>“It’s important for the younger generation to see and learn about different points of view,” Nyugen said.<>Alberto Arenas, a professor at the University of Arizona, came from Tucson to let people know not all Arizonans support their senator’s presidential bid.

Bill Schuster, a Vietnam War veteran from Blaine, came to “do my part because I don’t like what’s going on and I don’t like us being in Iraq.”

Marie Williams, 77, of Minneapolis, carried a “Dissent is Patriotic” placard.
“I started coming to protests with Paul Wellstone and I haven’t stopped,” Williams said. “I can’t count up to 50,000, but this is a lot of people.”

Metro Transit has temporarily suspended bus service in downtown St. Paul due to traffic congestion caused by protest activity.

This notice corrects the earlier release which incorrectly indicated service had resumed.

The service area affected is east of Rice Street, south of University Avenue, north of Kellogg Boulevard, and west of Lafayette Road.

Normal downtown routes were first suspended around 2:30 p.m., and will continue until further notice.

Organizers hopes of 50,000 fell short and some were disappointed by the turnout, wondering if the 90-degree heat, strong-arm police tactics and President Bush’s cancellation thinned the crowd.

“I’m disappointed - this is far too few people,” said Lennie Major, a teacher from Mounds View. “We needed 10 times this many to make an impact, this will only be a blip.”

But P.J. Goodette, who came from San Jose, Calif., smiled as he waved a turquoise flag with a peace symbol and high-fived a line of Minneapolis police officers standing by their bicycles.

“I can feel it in the air,” he said. “Things are changing and I’m here because I want to be part of it.”

    Escalating violence
The peaceful, carnival atmosphere lasted until about 2 p.m., when several groups broke off and turned violent. At 3 p.m, about 300 members of a self-proclaimed anarchist group locked arms to block delegate buses near Robert Street and Kellogg Blvd.

Police warmed them to disperse or they would be tear-gassed. When they refused, about 150 police officers responded by tossing tear-gas canisters into the group.

Earlier, near 6th and Wacouta Sts., protesters dropped bent nails into the intersection. The group swelled to more than 200 as they turned up 4th St., tossing garbage cans and newspaper kiosks into the road.

Then, a few marchers broke off and threw objects, shattering three windows in the First Trust Co. bank building at Fourth and Minnesota Sts. As sirens screaming in the distance drew closer, drowning out the shouting crowd, a masked marcher threw his bike in front of the lead squad car.

Others continued up Sixth Street, closely pursued by more than a dozen slow-moving police cars. A few officers walked in front of the cars, clearing the barriers the marchers had thrown in the street. By Sixth and Cedar streets, many of the marchers had moved to the sidewalk, and were beginning to disperse. A few smashed out windows of the Macy’s store at Wacouta Street.

Some marchers scattered; others continued to Market Street, where they turned left toward the main march and right toward Kellogg Boulevard.

Marchers, in dark clothing, and with bandanas still over their faces, milled about at Seventh Place, among downtowners and others wearing RNC credentials.

One marcher, who declined to offer his name, said a police officer sprayed him and struck him in the head with a pepper spray can, when he stopped to try to help a fellow marcher who was being sprayed.

Unfortunately, it looks like the Minneapolis/St. Paul scanner is offline but keep checking back for it to be online.

During the DNC, Fox News claimed to be the only news channel reporting on demonstrations against the DNC. Are ABC, NBC, and CBS covering much of these demonstrations against the RNC?

If this election cycle goes as well as we're now expecting, she's going to be a major GOP player for a good 20-30 years to come. She has been placed front and center and she is shining.

Mis-spoken by her best friend on CNN this morning she spoke about Sarah Palin being qualified to be the President. lol

She's being somewhat criticized right now for not having laid out a plan for our country, and for standing up and beating up Obama and the media. Good grief, do they already want her to do the President's job. lol

She performed well. Contrast the way that she handled all of the heat, speaking to the whole nation for the first time, and her grace and fire... WOW!...with how Michelle Obama looked angry and upset when Hillary Clinton was speaking at the DNC to say she would give her support to Obama, when she and her children weren't even under attack. My point is that not everybody is made of the strength and resolve and intelligence and poise and punch all packaged together like Governor Palin. Whether any one likes it or not, Michelle is running, afterall, for the position of First Lady. Excellent job Sarah Palin!
