Crowds Descend On Columbus As Ohio Debates Union Overhaul

Crowds of public employees protesting a sweeping Ohio proposal to strip unions of collective bargaining rights are wearing red in an effort to steer public opinion away from the idea that unions are all-Democrat organizations.

The move came as union protests by firefighters, teachers, police and state workers were joined by a smaller number of tea party activists who support the legislation. The measure would end collective bargaining and replace negotiated salary schedules with merit raises.

The bill represents the biggest challenge in recent memory to Ohio unions, emerging after Republicans took control of the legislature and governor's office this year.

Gov. John Kasich backs the bill and even more stringent union limitations. His Democratic predecessor, Ted Strickland, made a brief appearance amid the crowd Thursday and drew cheers.

If this is what happens when government workers have a slight reduction in pay/benefits, just imagine what will happen if that food stamp card doesn't have money added to it, that Social Security check doesn't get mailed/deposited, or any other number of socialist programs are even just delayed!

Union protesters and Democrat lawmakers will attempt to prevent for a second day a vote in the Wisconsin Senate that would increase public employees’ contributions to retirement and health benefits and strip unions of the power to bargain for higher salaries.

The battle in Madison has become the epicenter of a national fight between newly empowered small-government conservatives and Democrats backed by government worker unions.

The grassroots political operation of President Obama, who on Wednesday denounced the austerity legislation as an “attack on unions,” has swung in behind the government workers. Organizing for America, the activist organizing wing of the Democratic National Committee is helping keep the pressure on Republican lawmakers who plan to pass the legislation today.

Members of the Service Employees International Union, the most influential union in national Democratic circles, have also joined the fray in support of the government workers. The SEIU is helping man an around-the-clock occupation of the central halls of the state capital.

Tea Party groups, meanwhile, have planned a counter demonstration for Saturday at the capitol in support of the measure, raising the prospect of a clash between the activist groups.

Thousands of union activists have tried to shut down the process at the statehouse, which swung to the GOP in the 2010 elections. The efforts to block access to the state Senate and disrupt debates have been described as “mostly peaceful,” though union groups have expanded their protests to the homes of individual lawmakers.

Nine protesters have been arrested so far for disorderly conduct.

The holdup in the vote is due to the fact that the Democratic members of the Senate are on the lam, denying Republicans a quorum and the chance to vote. The Democrats are holed up at a resort just across the Illinois border, putting them beyond the reach of Wisconsin law enforcement agencies that could otherwise compel at least one Democrat to appear in the Senate so a vote could take place.

So far, the hideout seems to be backfiring. Moderate Republicans who had been on the fence over the legislation are denouncing the shutdown as undemocratic.

The lower chamber of the legislature may take up the bill today if Senate Democrats remain in hiding.

The measure would increase the contributions of public employees to their own retirement and medical benefits. The plan, put forward by new Gov.

Scott Walker, R-Wisc., would have public workers make equal contributions to their retirement funds (teachers currently contribute $1 for every $56.94 from the state) and increase workers’ share of health insurance premiums to 12.6 percent. Teachers in most districts currently pay less than 5 percent of their insurance costs. The national average for workers is 27 percent.

While the increased contributions are a sore spot, the greatest anger among demonstrators is over the portion of the bill that would strip public workers of the right to bargain for higher wages, benefits and changes to job duties. Pay raises for public workers would be subject to voter approval.

Under the law, the state would also stop withholding union dues from government paychecks and make due payments strictly voluntary.

There are similar measures under consideration around the nation, including in Ohio where protests are picking up steam.

National Democrats and their labor allies are hoping to cause maximum political damage with the increasingly likely passage of the measure in an effort to discourage other states and congressional Republicans from moving to crack down on government unions.

Yesterday we brought you video of socialists openly rallying in Madison, WI and trying to recruit new members. Today, we show you that the communists are joining the fray too.

Once again, the MacIver Institute was down at the Capitol capturing video of those flocking to the protests in Wisconsin. This time, videographer Bill Osmuski caught up with some admitted revolutionaries from Chicago who came up to try and spread their message, and told Osmuski they definitely think “people are open to the possibilities of building a revolutionary movement.”

Greece comes to Columbus, Ohio

Today approximately 4,000 public union workers were able to take last minute “personal” days to travel to Columbus. Their purpose was to shout down, intimidate, harass and other wise bully anyone who is concerned about the state of Ohio, the $8 Billion deficit and the future we are leaving for our children.

Ohio laws governing collective bargaining for public employees and teachers-union contracts, unchallenged since it was established in 1983, deprive the employers — that would be the taxpayers — of essential management rights. These laws, at their heart, restrict the public employers’ ability to manage the majority of their budget – the dollars spent on personnel. State and local governments must have the same flexibility and control over their workforce as does private sector management. State and local governments must be able to respond to changing economic conditions.

In the past decade Ohio has lost more than 600,000 private sector jobs. At the same time the private sector has shrunk, the size of government has remained constant. Although the size of government is the same as 10-years ago, the costs have grown. The costs are greater as a direct result of collective bargaining with your tax dollars. Fewer private sector workers supporting greater public sector benefits,

• Salary increases
• Step increases
• Longevity increases
• Healthcare costs
• Pension costs

It is not a sustainable model. Some critics call Senate Bill 5 a right-wing idea. No less a committed liberal-progressive than President Franklin Roosevelt opposed giving government workers the right to bargain.
Senate Bill 5, sponsored by Sen. Shannon Jones, R-Springboro, proposes much needed changes, including

• eliminating the right of state employees to bargain collectively; Senate Bill 5 does NOT eliminate collective bargaining for local government units
• requiring merit-based pay and promotion
• moving away from defined benefit plans to employee-controlled defined contribution plans, Michigan eliminated defined-benefit pensions for all new state workers in 1997, Illinois, not known for Republican sympathies or majorities, instituted similar change
• additional changes make Ohio law consistent with provisions in the National Labor Relations Act, bringing public collective bargaining in line with private sector bargaining
• healthcare plans are not subject to collective bargaining, which will result in uniform benefit packages which should produce overall savings
• public employees would be required to contribute at least 20% to the cost of healthcare premium
• S.B. 5 prohibits local school districts, typically the most egregious offenders, from paying the employee’s required share of pension contribution, reporting the pension contribution as salary which then is used to calculate the employee’s defined benefit pension
• Finally the bill eliminates micro-management of local school boards’ leave policy by statute, requiring local school boards to establish uniform policies within each of Ohio’s school systems

Five-year budget projections for Ohio's 613 school districts suggest a combined shortfall of more than $7.6 billion. By 2015, compensation costs are on track to eat up 96 percent of all revenue in these districts.

But if districts reduced pay packages by 10 percent this year, and limited future increases to the historical inflation rate of 3.2 percent, the $7.6 billion shortfall would become a $1 billion surplus. That would enable school districts to soften the impact of expected cuts in state aid to education.

Taxes are a fact of life. Government finances needed services – defense, roads, prisons, and schools at state and local levels. We live in a world of limited resources, and taxes also act to redistribute income from the private to the public sector. As responsible stewards of our limited resources, we must determine the impact taxes have on the private economy, remembering it is only in the private sector that wealth can be created.

Ohio Democrats sent out a mass email requesting donations to push back against SB 5. In their email they say

Below are points (from the Ohio Democratic Party) .....

1. SB 5 is a jobs killer. It will weaken the middle class in Ohio.

2. Anyone who supports SB 5 is destroying jobs in Ohio and harming the middle class.

3. If SB 5 passes, shops, stores, gas stations and other merchants in communities across this state will lay off workers or shutter their windows and close their doors.

How will bringing public sector employees practices and benefits in line with private sector workers, the ones that pay the state’s bills, do any of the above? Chris Redfern , Chair of the Ohio Democrat Party, doesn’t explain.

Typically emotional appeals don’t work well with logic and facts. Redfern is not only asking for donations, he is also encouraging liberals to write and call their legislators as well as inundate community newspapers with letters to the editor.

Bruce Wyngaard,Associate Executive Director, AFSCME Local 11, had a salary of $94,337 in 2009. Also in 2009, the eleven local staffers of this Public Employee Union were paid more than $5.8 million. All 30,870 members of AFSCME paid approximately $190 each for their local staff.

AFSCME Council 8 President John Lyallwas scheduled to testify against Senate Bill 5 today. Lyall was paid $155,482 in 2009. Excluding payments to officers such as Lyall – and $148,265 for First VP Robert Mitchell – AFSCME Council 8 employees were paidmore than $5.7 million in 2009. Annual disbursements to union employees equaled more than $155 per member.

The unions spent less than half as much on benefits – pensions, medical insurance, etc. – as on union pay in 2009. AFSCME Local 11 spent a little over $2.5 million on benefits; AFSCME Council 8 spent less than $2 million.

Do you really believe that Lyall, Wyngaard and Mitchell are concerned about shops, stores, gas stations and other merchants in communities across this state or do you think they are concerned about their incredibly generous paychecks?

We’ve all seen cutbacks in private sector jobs. If you haven’t been laid off, had your hours cut, gone without a raise while insurance costs, food and gas expenses have increased, I bet you know someone who has. We are at the time when cutbacks are required at all levels of government. Public-sector managers need flexibility to allocate scarce resources toward the most important services.

What’s most important in Franklin County may not be the same thing in Hamilton County. The decisions Princeton City Schools may make, and the decisions made by Cincinnati Public Schools, are not the same.

Rigid employment rules and contracts make flexibility and response to local conditions impossible. Instead of preserving programs (and jobs) through pay freezes or pay cuts, for example, the only choice available in a budget crisis is to cut positions and programs. Then, nobody wins except those who’ve won the seniority lottery, or the union bosses.

The AFSCME and OEA lobbies in Columbus can scream, holler and hold their breath in defense of “workers’ rights”. But what about the rights of all non-union workers? Nationwide, only approximately 12% of workers belong to a union, and among private sector workers less than 7% of workers are unionized [Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2009]. In Ohio, it is the majority of workers – over 90% - who get no respect. The current system is not sustainable.

Public Worker Protests Spread From Wisconsin to Ohio

Feb. 18 (Bloomberg) -- In what union leaders say is becoming a national fight, protests against legislation to restrict public employees’ collective-bargaining rights spread from Wisconsin to Ohio.

In Madison, Wisconsin, crowds that police estimated at 25,000 engulfed the Capitol and its lawns yesterday during a third-straight day of protests as Democratic senators fled the legislative session. In Columbus, Ohio, about 3,800 state workers, teachers and other public employees came to the statehouse for a committee hearing. President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner, an Ohioan, argued over whether the bills are “an assault on unions.”

Ohio firefighters Dave Hefflinger and Jerry Greer said they were. They stood near hundreds of workers elbow-to-elbow in the statehouse atrium and listened to a Senate hearing through speakers. Chants of “Kill the bill” echoed.

“We’re here to support our brothers and sisters,” Hefflinger, a 27-year veteran, said in an interview. “They’re trying to take away what we fought for all of these years.”

Hefflinger, 49, and Greer, 39, members of the department in Findlay, Ohio, drove two hours south to protest the bill. The measure would eliminate collective bargaining for state workers, prevent local-government employees from negotiating for health insurance and replace salary schedules with merit pay.

With states facing deficits that may reach a combined $125 billion next year, Republican governors including Wisconsin’s Scott Walker, Ohio’s John Kasich and New Jersey’s Chris Christie are targeting changes in rules for collective bargaining and worker contributions for health-care coverage and pensions.

Wisconsin Walkouts
In Wisconsin, Walker championed a bill that would make public workers bargain only for wages and require them to pay 5.8 percent of their pension costs; they pay nothing now. They would have to foot 12 percent of their health-care premiums, up from 6 percent. Police and firefighters wouldn’t be covered by the measure.

Fourteen Democratic senators disappeared from the Capitol yesterday, just as the Senate was about to begin debating, according to the Associated Press. Their flight brought the debate to a swift halt by denying the chamber a quorum, the news agency said.

‘Don’t Blink’
Yesterday, University of Wisconsin-Madison students walked out of classes at the urging of student government and campus newspapers and marched to the Capitol, about a mile away. There, they joined protesters who filled the rotunda to chant, bang drums and sing, and spilled outside.

In a telephone interview Feb. 15, Walker said he spoke with Kasich about the demonstrations. When asked for advice, Walker said, “Don’t blink.”

The White House’s political operation, Organizing for America, helped to build crowds using social media, the Washington Post reported today, citing an unidentified Democratic Party official. Obama himself spoke to Milwaukee television station WTMJ.

“Some of what I’ve heard coming out of Wisconsin, where they’re just making it harder for public employees to collectively bargain generally, seems like more of an assault on unions,” the president said.

Boehner, a Republican from a Cincinnati suburb, responded with a statement saying he was “disappointed” that Obama criticized Walker.

Dire Challenges
“Republicans in Congress -- and reform-minded GOP governors like Scott Walker, John Kasich and Chris Christie -- are daring to speak the truth about the dire fiscal challenges Americans face at all levels of government, and daring to commit themselves to solutions that will liberate our economy and help put our citizens on a path to prosperity,” Boehner said.

The bills are state-level skirmishes in a national battle, and the purpose is to undermine labor unions and the Democrats they support, said John Russo, a professor and co-director of the Center for Working-Class Studies at Youngstown State University in Ohio.

“It’s really an ideological battle that’s being fought across the country right now,” Russo said yesterday in an interview while waiting to testify before the Ohio Senate Insurance, Commerce and Labor Committee. “This is a real teaching moment. Let’s have this debate about the role of the public sector.”

There were 50 witnesses scheduled, and Chairman Kevin Bacon said the committee would hear them without a break.

“This is a true test of democracy,” Bacon said.

Biggest Crowd
The statehouse spokesman, Gregg Dodd, estimated the crowd at about 3,800 and said it was the largest gathering inside the statehouse since it was renovated in 1996.

Mixing with protesters were members of Tea Party groups who staged their own rally in support of the legislation.

Mike Wilson, who founded the Cincinnati Tea Party, said the bill is an effort to restore balance between governments and their workers, who he said are overpaid.

“This bill is not on attack on public employees; it is not an attack on the middle class,” Wilson, 34, a technology consultant, said at the rally. “This bill is about math.”

Joe Rugola, the former president of the Ohio AFL-CIO who also is executive director of the Ohio Association of Public School Employees, said he represents bus drivers and janitors who earn about $24,000 a year.

“I’m still looking for this privileged class of workers,” Rugola said in an interview while waiting to testify. “This is just part of a national attack on working people.”

Talk of these protests spreading to Minnesota soon as we grapple with the same issue of government unions.

Last fall while at our secret hideout, in Wisconsin, an uncle said something interesting. He basically described what is happening right now and how there was great potential for is to escalate. Ultimately, a civil war between public and private. These government union employees have held private America hostage, stealing our wealth to pay themselves. And oh do they pay themselves! He said it would get to a point where we simply wouldn't take it anymore.

At what point in time did lying and being unethical become patriotic or the right thing to do? Yet by calling in sick and handing out fake doctor's notes they are being hailed as heros. America is over.

Connecting the dots to anarchy

Last year here in north Idaho, my garden failed. Miserably.

Not from lack of trying. But after having the "winter of no winter" (very little snow), we also had the "summer of no summer." Well into the third week of June, the cold and rainy conditions made it nearly impossible for vegetables to grow.

It was a harsh lesson in some ways. Right now a garden's failure is merely an inconvenience. But in times past, a garden's failure could be catastrophic. After all, the French Revolution was triggered in large part because people were starving. Some say the recent riots in Egypt were fueled by surging wheat prices.

Keep this in mind for a moment as we review some recent headlines:

• A leading U.K. scientist warned about a threat of food riots around the world unless research into increasing crop yields is stepped up.
• A severe drought is threatening to destroy China's wheat crop. Emergency measures to divert water for irrigation are leaving nearly 3 million people short of drinking water. "China's grain situation is critical to the rest of the world – if they are forced to go out on the market to procure adequate supplies for their population, it could send huge shock waves through the world's grain markets," said Robert S. Zeigler.
  
  
• Global food prices have hit "dangerous levels" that could contribute to political instability, push millions of people into poverty and raise the cost of groceries. The USDA predicted last week U.S. corn farmers will have 675 million bushels of corn at the end of August, before next year's harvest begins. That's just an 18-day supply.

Of course it's not just food that's an issue. What about debt?

• President Obama's budget, released Monday, was conceived as a blueprint for future spending, but it also paints the bleakest picture yet of the current fiscal year, which is on track for a record federal deficit and will see the government's overall debt surpass the size of the total U.S. economy.
  
  
• The chances of a government shutdown are on the rise.
  
  
• Silver is spiking.
  
  
• Like it or not, unemployment is at 17.3 percent, not the relatively soothing 9 percent we're being spoon-fed by the mainstream media.
• Just four years ago, our budget deficit ($161 billion in 2007) was 10 percent of what it is today ($1.65 trillion).

British columnist Andrew Simms isn't afraid to state the obvious: "This year is the 10th anniversary of the fuel protests [when protesters blockaded British oil refineries, bringing the supply of fuels to gas stations to a halt], when supermarket bosses sat with ministers and civil servants in Whitehall warning that there were just three days of food left. We were, in effect, nine meals from anarchy. Suddenly, the apocalyptic visions of novelists and filmmakers seemed less preposterous. Civilization's veneer may be much thinner than we like to think."

Are you connecting the dots yet? This is the elephant in the room that everyone refuses to see: We're not as secure in this country as the government and mainstream media would like us to believe. There are sporadic news reports about dire possibilities, but few people are willing to connect the dots on the individual level. And yet it's well-documented that America, too, has a mere three day supply of food in stores, thanks to just-in-time deliveries and the efficiency of modern-day transportation and manufacturing systems. America itself remains a mere nine meals from anarchy.

What this means, of course, is just what it says: After three days with no food, the veneer of civilization breaks down and people will commit just about any violence necessary to secure some food for themselves and their families. Remember Katrina?

Except for localized disasters, how long has it been since we've had food shortages in America? Certainly not in my lifetime. For too long, our complacent, secure nation has viewed resource troubles as someone else's problem. There is a subtle underlying ethno-superiority when it comes to addressing scarcity. It's always "those people" (in other countries) who suffer, not us. We're Americans. We're better. We have our benevolent government to save us.

Lulled by entitlements that have pervaded our nation in the past few decades, we believe we will always have food. So we sit. And wait. And fold our hands. And refuse to help ourselves. And stay vulnerable.

Meanwhile, a 50-pound bag of rice can still be bought for about $25 and a 50-pound bag of beans for less. A hundred pounds of rice and beans will last someone a long time. That kind of food security is affordable for nearly every citizen in this country, especially since food – right now – is still relatively cheap and available.

Yet anyone who preaches about keeping a full pantry is endlessly mocked and ridiculed as a right-wing extremist, a fear-monger and even a domestic terrorist. For centuries, a full pantry was simply a sensible precaution against the inevitable variations in weather and personal economic conditions. But America has developed a sense of arrogance and an "it can't happen to me" attitude – coupled with an astounding ignorance of basic survival skills – that bodes ill for when disaster strikes. And history shows that sooner or later it will strike.

What worries me about this attitude is that when food shortages hit on a long-term basis or when unemployment spikes beyond the government's ability to provide, hungry folks will listen to anyone who claims to have the ability to solve their problems and blame others for causing the hunger.

If money is worthless and food is hard to come by, how long before we react with fear and anger? How long before we're willing to blame anyone and anything? How long before some charismatic leader assures us that he can solve all our problems? How long before violence erupts?

Can't happen here? Don't fool yourself. Hunger has no nationality. It doesn't belong to any skin color, language or culture. Buy food now – because when the pantry is truly empty, it's too late.

Heartland Revolution Goes to Wisconsin

This week, Heartland Revolution hit the road to Wisconsin! We were on the ground in the state capital rallying for workers’ rights. Rights like collective bargaining are essential for millions of working class Americans and, once again, Republicans either don’t get it, or just don’t care. So, the people took to the streets to make their voices heard!

Protecting American families from corporate fat-cats is a crucial part of maintaining a healthy working-class. That’s why Heartland Revolution is dedicated to fighting for Blue Collar workers where it is needed most.

On Thursday and Friday we were in Ohio where workers are rallying to secure their rights. We’ll keep you updated on facebook and twitter @heartlandrev. These demonstrations, while not romantic in the eyes of the national media, are perfect examples of regular people coming together to effect change.

As the working families revolution rages on tonight as the protests continue to grow in Wisconsin and now it is spreading to several states throughout America. This coming Monday protests are scheduled in Indianapolis, Indiana with the following schedule:

Monday, February 21, 2011 beginning at 9:00 a.m. (*NOTE TIME CHANGE DUE TO RTW HEARING)

Tuesday, February 22, 2011 beginning at 10:00 a.m.

As of right now protests are going to start in Iowa on Tuesday, February 22 at 1 p.m. on the west steps of the Iowa Capitol.

Union Protester Arrested for Trying to Sabotage Madison Tea Party Sound System

Yesterday, a pro-union thug was arrested for trying to sabotage the sound system at the tea party rally in Madison, Wisconsin. I was standing up near the stage and completely missed this due to the size of the massive crowd.

Missing Wisconsin State Senators Lose Direct-Deposit Paychecks

Wisconsin state senators who miss two or more session days will no longer get paid through direct deposit. They’ll have to pick up their checks in person on the Senate floor during a session.

The new rule is aimed at forcing the return of 14 Senate Democrats who have been hiding in Illinois since Thursday. They fled the state to stall a vote on an anti-union bill, and have threatened to stay away until Republican Gov. Scott Walker agrees to compromise.

Tuesday’s vote was along party lines. The three Republicans on the Committee on Senate Organization voted for it and the two Democrats opposed it.

The measure applies to paychecks, per diem checks, and any expense reimbursements. The absent senators will have to collect their checks from the Senate majority leader.

The men and women who are physically there need to simply say enough is enough, and rule themselves to have enough people to vote, and lock out the missing legislators.

Hell, if the legislators don't want to do the People's Business, they should be FIRED outright.

Well, the interesting thing is that they can vote on non-financial matters. Sounds like a perfect opportunity to jam some Conservative bills through. Wonder why that isn't happening... Not sure they can change parliamentary rules though.
