In Crimea's footsteps: Alaska wants to unite with Russia, puts petition forward

A petition entitled "Alaska Back to Russia" has been placed on the US administration's website and has gathered over 14 thousand signatures in three days. All that despite the fact that that document vanished from the open list of appeals – although the first 150 signatures made it available for voting.

Some experts point out that one should not talk about any tendency for separatism in the US, but one should not take such petitions as a joke either. The authors of the petition – similar to other petitions for the secession of some other US states – are trying to remind the White House about the basis of the state, and specifically about the Declaration of Independence.

A resident of Anchorage, the largest city in the state of Alaska, published his petition a couple of days after Crimea seceded from Ukraine and rejoined Russia. To support his petition he cites the following historic facts: the first Europeans that put their foot on the land of Alaska in 1732 were the crew of the Saint Gabriel vessel, captained by Makhail Gvozdev and Ivan Fedorov. In conclusion the author calls for "seceding Alaska from the US to rejoin Russia".

The US acquired Alaska in 1867 in exchange for $7.2 million. Even if there has been any violation of that treaty on Washington's part (which has been discussed in certain circles lately), the period of limitation has long expired. Thus, at first sight the petition looks like a joke, or as mockery of the American authorities. But that document does not appear so unserious considering the situation regarding other states' appeals to secede from the US. The same website called We The People hosts similar petitions from citizens of 29 of the 50 US states. The White House needs to at least take such a trend into account, thinks Dmitry Abzalov, vice president at the Center for Strategic Communications.

"As practice shows, the majority of countries focused on the external issues missed separatist processes inside their states. Take Spain or Great Britain, or Southeast Asia for example. For Washington it is more important to deal with internal problems: they are quite serious and concern primarily the state budget and external debt. That is a lot more important than the situation in Kiev or Ukraine, which most US citizens generally know nothing of. Otherwise, the risk of repeating the situation in the Southeast of Ukraine or in the European countries will be quite large in the USA".

If the petition to return Alaska to Russia gathers 100 thousand signatures before April 20, the US administration would have to react to that appeal. Although that reaction would be just answering the appeal. For example, over 125 thousand people signed the petition for Texas to secede from the US in 2012. And the authorities answered them that the covenants left by the Founding Fathers did not include the right to secede from the country. They did not even recall the Declaration of Independence adopted by the same Founding Fathers: it states that a situation could come up when one people would have to break the political ties that tie it to another people, in order to guarantee it "security and happiness". But now 29 states recalled those words. Although it is clear from the beginning that those petitions will be "soft-pedaled" as well.

It is also clear that nobody will remember the declaration in relation to the situation in Crimea and Ukraine. It Jupiter is not allowed to do it (refering to the Latin phrase "What is legitimate for Jupiter, is not legitimate for the ox."- VOR), all the rest aren't either. One should not talk about the "Kosovo precedent": the "rest of the world" that is so far from understanding democracy cannot understand that Kosovo is a "special case".

Scotland and the Falkland Islands can follow that example, while Crimea should not! Washington and its allies are trying to come to peace with themselves using all these mantras. In the last few years the Big Brother policy has convinced the sober part of humanity that one should stay as far as possible from such "democratic" ideals, points out Sergey Grinyayev, director of the Center for Strategic Evaluations.

"The situation with the referendum in Crimea is the trend of our time. The thing is that over the past years the leadership of many countries has conducted inefficient policy. The global economic crisis that resulted in countless countries going bankrupt testifies to that. Undoubtedly, the majority of the planet's population cannot accept such a situation. And naturally, given that we observe and will observe that nations demand their right for self-determination."

Moscow’s annexation of Crimea was condemned worldwide, but some people in Alaska apparently are yearning for the days when they, too, were part of Mother Russia.

A petition on the White House website created by “S.V.” of Anchorage is calling on Alaskans and others to "vote" for Alaska to secede from the U.S. and become a part of Russia.

In less than a week, the petition, titled “Alaska Back to Russia,” has garnered nearly 30,000 signatures, though it's unclear where they are from.

“Vote for secession of Alaska from the United States and joining Russia,” the petition says.

The petition, though strangely worded and difficult to understand, describes how Alaska was originally settled and populated by native Russians.

Secretary of State William Seward purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867 for $7.2 million, in a decision decried at the time as “Seward’s Folly.” The territory officially became the 49^th state on Jan. 3, 1959.

Even if the White House responds to the Alaska petition, it is almost certainly going nowhere. The Alaska petition offers no specifics for how the proposed secession would even be executed, whether by referendum or some other process. Further, the Supreme Court ruled, in the wake of the Civil War, that unilateral secession is unconstitutional.

The White House typically issues an official response to petitions on the official website if they receive 100,000 signatures in 30 days -- in this case, the deadline would be April 20. A similar petition in 2012 calling for Texas to secede from the U.S. reached this goal, and the White House responded by saying “our states remain united.”

“Our founding fathers established the Constitution of the United States ‘in order to form a more perfect union’ through the hard and frustrating but necessary work of self-government,” the official response to the Texas petition said. “They enshrined in that document the right to change our national government through the power of the ballot -- a right that generations of Americans have fought to secure for all. But they did not provide a right to walk away from it.”

Imagine if the swamp, I mean, protected wetland behind your house suddenly wasn't any concern of a bureaucratic political agency 5000 miles away and no one gives a shit if you simply drained it to help with the mosquito problem? Would you consider the petition then?

However, I come from a different generation than most of the people working the oil fields these days. I still see loyalty to the United States (as a citizen) paramount to where my money is coming from.

Given the choice of political systems and their impact on the people, the Russian system, as of today, is MORE FREE. This does not mean I would go red. Russian mayor demands Alaskan island be returned to Russia

Russia sold Alaska and the surrounding islands to the United States in 1857 for $7.2 million in gold.

March 26 (UPI) -- A Russian mayor in the Siberian city of Yakutsk has demanded that a small Alaskan island be returned to the Russian Orthodox Church.

"2014 we will mark the 220th anniversary of the Russian Orthodox Church mission to North America and this is a perfect time to pay attention to the Russian America. I stand for the restoration of historical justice -- the return of Spruce Island to its lawful owner -- the Russian Orthodox Church." Yakutsk Mayor Aysen Nikolayev told a local newspaper.

Yakutsk researchers claim they found a certificate of transfer in the Alaskan capital of Juneau that says the island was granted to the Russian Orthodox Church "for eternity." A senior church official said the papers must be studied for verification of their validity.

Spruce island has 250 residents who are still considered to be living on American soil.

A petition seeking to give Alaska back to Russia is gaining steam on the White House's petition website, petitions.whitehouse.gov.

The petition is strangely worded and full of grammar problems, but that hasn't stopped it from getting more than 28,000 signatures since it was created on March 21.

Titled "Alaska back to Russia." it reads:

"Groups Siberian russians crossed the Isthmus (now the Bering Strait) 16-10 thousand years ago. "Russian began to settle on the Arctic coast, Aleuts inhabited the Aleutian Archipelago.

"First visited Alaska August 21, 1732, members of the team boat "St. Gabriel »under the surveyor Gvozdev and assistant navigator I. Fedorov during the expedition Shestakov and DI Pavlutski 1729-1735 years

"Vote for secession of Alaska from the United States and joining Russia"

The creator of the petition is known only as "S. V." of Anchorage, Alaska.

The White House will issue an official response to a petition on the site if it reaches 100,000 signatures in 30 days, Fox News reported.

This petition has until April 20 to get another 70,000 signatures.

Alaska was purchased from Russia for $7.2 million in 1867 by Secretary of State William Seward. At the time, the purchase was sometimes referred to as "Seward's Folly."

In 2012, a similar petition for Texas to secede from the United States got enough signatures to merit a response, plus a few thousand more.

A White House official wrote this statement:

"Our founding fathers established the Constitution of the United States 'in order to form a more perfect union' through the hard and frustrating but necessary work of self-government. They enshrined in that document the right to change our national government through the power of the ballot -- a right that generations of Americans have fought to secure for all. But they did not provide a right to walk away from it."

Russia, Only a 'Regional Power' -- That Neighbors the U.S.

By dismissing Russia as essentially irrelevant -- merely a "regional power" -- to U.S. interests, Barack Obama was prevaricating. After all, Russia and the United States are neighbors, and the region Russia threatens includes us. He should know that.

Or else Comrade Obama (Hey, the Russian Deputy Prime Minister said it, I didn't) forgot, or didn't know, that the U.S. and Russia are separated by less than three miles of the Bering Strait. (Yes, you really can see Russia from Alaska.) Or that Russia has a recent history of flexing its military muscle in U.S. airspace. From the Washington Free Beacon in 2012:

"The U.S. Northern Command and joint U.S.-Canadian North American Aerospace Defense (NORAD) Command said two Russian bombers violated U.S. airspace near Alaska during recent arctic war games… Defense officials believe the Russian war games simulated strikes using long-range cruise missiles against the U.S. missile defense interceptor base at Fort Greely, Alaska, as well as strikes on strategic radar systems based on the Aleutian island chain..."

And the Toronto Sun reported in 2010 that:

"NORAD fighter jets have intercepted between 12 and 18 Russian bombers per year since 2007… Canadian fighter jets scrambled to repel Russian bombers that made several attempts to probe Canadian airspace on Wednesday (July 28, 2010.) QMI Agency has learned that two CF-18s took off from CFB Bagotville to intercept two TU-95 long range bombers about 463 km east of Goose Bay, N.L. Attempts by Russia to test Canadian airspace have been going on since 2007; military and intelligence analysts tell QMI Agency the frequency has been increasing since then, but one senior official described Wednesday's event as 'not the usual s--t.' "

Oh, and these bombers (TU-95 "Bears") are nuke capable.

"One military analyst tells QMI Agency the Russians have been known to fly with nukes on board just to flex their muscle and prove to the world they are still a powerful country."

Sarah Palin was excoriated for pointing out that Alaska and Russia are neighbors -- just as Mitt Romney was ridiculed for identifying Russia as America's number one geopolitical foe. Now that Russia's actions have proved them right, and Obama wrong, will Obama receive the same harsh treatment?

All too true. The US wouldn't give Alaska "back" to the Russians. The history is clear on us purchasing the area. We own it, we paid for it.

And, Alaska was Russian when Alexander II was Czar of Russia, not under semi-democratic state capitalism. I might be more inclined towards a new Russian Alaska if Russia was under a real and Orthodox Czar, but that's another matter.

Alaska being bought was a slight payback for the Russians for their role in our American Civil War, when Alexander II sent his Baltic and Pacific fleets to go anchor in New York and San Francisco in 1863 to keep Britain and France from getting involved militarily in our fratricidal conflict.

We don't know the future. For all we know, Russia and lands under her sway may be the last bastion of true Civilization someday against the Islamic, Asiatic, and Third World hordes of tomorrow, as the Capitol Building in Washington, Buckingham Palace in London, and St. Peter's in Rome become Mosques.... Far stranger things have happened.

Russian Ambassadors Discuss Invading Miami, California In Leaked Call

A leaked conversation between two Russian ambassadors appears to show the diplomats joking about the crisis in Ukraine and the possibility of future incursions in the United States and Eastern Europe.

The video posted under the YouTube account “Michael Berkan” involves Igor Nilokaevich Chubarov and Sergey Viktorovich Bakharev, the Russian ambassadors to the African nations Eritrea and Zimbabwe and Malawi, respectively.

The call begins with Chubarov congratulating Bakharev on Zimbabwe’s vote against the UN resolution that declared Crimea’s referendum invalid. Chubarov expressed surprise that Eritrea abstained from the vote.

After exchanging pleasantries, Chubarov then jokes he is trying to drive home the message to the EU Heads of Mission that the Crimea referendum and further Russian imperialism is only the beginning:

IGOR NILOAKAEVICH CHUBAROV: Now I have a very simple task, for the time being I’m saying the only key thing to those EU HoMs. I’m repeating: “Guys, we’ve taken away Crimea but it’s not the fucking end. [laughter] In the future we’ll take away your [laughter] fucking Catalonia, Venice, as well as Cattleland (Scotland), and Alaska. And we’ll never rest content with that” [laughter].

SERGEY VIKTOROVICH BAHAREV: At first stage we will.

CHUBAROV: Agreed, only at first stage, and later we’ll think it over. All those fucking limitrophes, e.g. Latvia, Estonia, and other Europeans as well as Romanians, and Bulgarians, we’ll kick their asses in the right direction – where they have to be.

VIKTOROVICH BAHAREV: Oh no, it’s better not to touch them, we are not going to kick them in. It’ll be better for us to disturb “Californialand,” “Miamiland,” that sort of desolated regions [laughter]

CHUBAROV: You’re right, there’s practically fucking 95 percent of our citizens in “Miamiland” [laughter]

VIKTOROVICH BAHAREV: Exactly.

CHUBAROV: We have full right to hold a referendum.

VIKTOROVICH BAHAREV: As well as “Londonland!”

CHUBAROV: Yes certainly, you’re right. We’ll leave for a while Romanians and Bulgarians, let them stay so far in the EU [laughter]

VIKTOROVICH BAHAREV: Together with the Baltic shit.

In a slightly more serious tone, Chubarov then tells his comrade that the EU told him Russia should take back Romania and Bulgaria:

CHUBAROV: By the way, the EU HoD and I recently had a chat, you know, about all kinds of things, just being lost in the crowd, and he asked: “Listen, take back those Romania and Bulgaria.” “Definitely, no,” I answered. “Guys, nothing will come of it.”

VIKTOROVICH BAHAREV: Enjoy yourself with all that stuff [laughter]

The leaked recording of the Russian officials follows the YouTube disclosure of a candid conversation between the State Department’s Victoria Nuland and U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt.

The Reasons Russia May Try To Take Alaska Back

The Russians are feeling somewhat giddy these days as they reclaim by force former parts of the Soviet Union and the imperial Russian Empire. It is a little known fact in America that two current U.S. states used to be controlled from Moscow, Alaska and parts of California. In my frequent trips to Russia, I quite often hear the tall tale that the U.S. stole Alaska from Russia and that they want it back. Of course, these accusations are made in jest, but not entirely. Have you ever heard the term Freudian slip? Although Putin has said he does not take these claims seriously, I think there is a deep longing among the Russian people that the Alaskan territory really belongs to the Russian Federation.

In the eighteenth century, imperial Russia was on the move, expanding in all directions (and especially to the east.) Siberia had long been under the control of the tsar in Moscow, but the Russian traders crossed the Bering Strait and developed a hugely profitable trade based out of what is now called Sitka, near Juneau. The Russian-American Company, or RAC, was extremely successful under its original leader, Alexander Baranov. The company’s shareholders included the tsars; and the area developed into a large trading center for the eastern Russian empire, dealing in furs, lumber, minerals, and ivory. They even sold ice to the infant, southern United States.

When Baranov died, the RAC fell into corruption as the new leaders skimmed off enormous profits for themselves from the trade business. Moscow began to subsidize the effort instead of reaping rewards. When the Crimean War broke out, Russia realized it could no longer defend the Alaskan territory; and a quick sale was made to the United States, with which Russia had very good relations at the time.

However, to initially supply this growing metropolis, Russian traders went further down the west coast of North America and established a citadel near San Francisco, and claimed the area for the Russian empire. Fort Ross was established in the early 1800s. The name comes from a form of the Russian word “Rus”, or belonging to Russia. The fort is now a national historic landmark and still exists, but was abandoned as the Russian empire pulled back from North America as the profits from their Alaskan adventure declined. There are scholars in Russia who to this day dispute the sale of the fort as they believe it was never paid for by the buyer, a wealthy individual.

With Russian president Vladimir Putin frequently citing the need for the Russian military to “protect” ethnic Russian populations in former colonies, perhaps it is useful to understand what Russian influence still exists in Alaska. The main remnant of Slavic culture to be seen across the state is the Russian Orthodox church, whose onion domes adorn the skyline of most Alaskan cities and certain villages. There is a small Russian speaking population also among the “Old Believers” who escaped persecution under the tsars and the Soviets and fled to North America and elsewhere. However, there is not one region of the territory that the Kremlin could point to as a large enclave of ethnic Russians. There was much intermingling among the Russian and native populations during the Russian reign, and Russian traditions can still be found in many native households and families.
