Is there a physical reason to march goosestep style ala German/Russian? It looks to me like it would expend much more energy than a regular march.
Enquiring minds want to know.

It certainly does. It also takes skill.
That's the point. It shows the absolute mechanization and pure "over the top" ability of the soldiers. It's a show of naked power.
Ask your self this...which is more intimidating...a group of hippies shuffling by or a group of snappy dressed soldiers goose-stepping down the road?
I've been saying for years...if protesters really wanted to get attention, they'd march in some lock step, loud thump thump style in rank and files. This would get way more media attention than "We support our soldiers when they shoot their officers"
"Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat."

I'd remind you, some did. They were called "Black Panthers".I've been saying for years...if protesters really wanted to get attention, they'd march in some lock step, loud thump thump style in rank and files. So I guess I have to ask. Has anyone on this board ever goose stepped, and if so for how far?
"Still waitin on the Judgement Day"
Tried it, once. Didn't like it, had to go back to regular marching.
LOL
No... thanks. I always thought it was too much like the Soviets and China. I think, honestly, as it was stated above, it's a "Show Off Mode".
The United States Military doesn't NEED to "Show Off".

We don't need goosestepping... We've got Marines that can do this!
