Iran ‘Won’t Be Alone’ If U.S. Attacks, Russian Official Says

Iran “won’t be alone” if the United States decides to launch a military strike on the Islamic republic, a senior Russian diplomat said on Wednesday.

U.S. President Donald Trump targeted Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other top Iranian officials with sanctions on Monday.

The dramatic step to increase pressure on Iran follows Tehran’s downing of an unmanned American drone last week, which Russia said had violated Iranian airspace. On Tuesday, Trump threatened to obliterate parts of Iran if it attacked "anything American," but later left the door open for talks.

“Iran will withstand this type of fight and Iran is not alone,” Zamir Kabulov, the Foreign Ministry’s special envoy for Asian countries including Iran, said at a Russian-Iranian policy forum in Moscow.

When asked if Russia was ready to provide material support to Iran if the U.S. attacks it, Kabulov said that “specific actions are a question for the Russian president.”

“But it’s not just Russia, many other countries sympathize and empathize with Iran,” the Kommersant business daily quoted him as saying. “Tehran won’t be alone if the U.S., God forbid, takes wild and irresponsible actions against it.”

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said separately that Moscow will try to persuade the U.S. and Iran to start "civilized" dialogue.

"This, of course, assumes the end to the [American] policy of ultimatums, sanctions and blackmail," Lavrov told another briefing later on Wednesday.

Earlier this week, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that Russia and its partners will take steps to counter new sanctions that Washington imposes on Iran, but did not specify what those steps would be.

Russian Politicians: U.S. ‘Crossed the Red Line’ by Killing Iran Terror Chief

    5:41
Top Russian diplomats and lawmakers expressed outrage and discontent at the death of Qasem Soleimani on Thursday, the head of Iran’s Quds Force terror cell.

The Quds Force is a subgroup of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which President Donald Trump’s administration branded a foreign terrorist organization last year. An American airstrike killed Soleimani and several other Iranian terrorist operatives, Washington announced overnight Thursday after they organized a failed siege on the U.S. embassy in Baghdad.

Soleimani is believed to be responsible for hundreds of American deaths and organized the Iranian infiltration of the Syrian civil war, Yemeni civil war, the Iraqi confrontation against the Islamic State, and had threatened Jordan and Lebanon, among other countries.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova condemned the killing, failing to defend Soleimani and instead claiming that any targeted military strike against a legitimate enemy of a state must go through the United Nations. Zakharova accused Washington of violating international law by acting against a leader within a designated terrorist organization.

“It turns out that a missile strike was carried out first, an act that is out of sync with international law was committed. And only then did they [the Americans] requested [the assessment of the events] involving the [US] Embassy. This is probably the height of cynicism, you know,” she told Rossiya 24, a national broadcast network.

“To condemn attacks on their embassies, states go to the U.N. Security Council submitting draft statements. Washington did not appeal to the Security Council, which means that it is not interested in the world’s response [and that it is] interested in changing the balance of power in the region,” she added, stating that she believed United Nations representatives would discuss the strike on Friday.

Zakharova also predicted “escalating tensions in the region” following Soleimani’s death. She did not address the throngs of overjoyed Iraqis taking the streets to celebrate his death. Soleimani was in charge of Baghdad’s bloody response to ongoing protests against Iran’s colonization of the country, which largely consisted of opening fire into unarmed crowds rather than address protesters’ concerns.

The Russian diplomat, in condemning the United States for not taking sovereign interests to the United Nations – where Russia can veto any Security Council action – also did not address Russia’s long record of disregarding international law, which most recently includes the invasion and colonization of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula and its enabling of Russian terrorists in eastern Ukraine to kill locals. Russia is also believed to be responsible for arming the terrorists responsible for taking down Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over Ukraine, killing 298 civilians.

While alive, Soleimani violated United Nations sanctions regularly. On at least one known occasion, he did so openly to visit Moscow. Soleimani reportedly made the trip in 2017 “to express his displeasure with the Russian government over their relationship with Saudi Arabia and other Arab states,” Fox News reported then.

Soleimani is believed to have brokered Russia’s entry into the Syrian Civil War. Iran is closely allied to the ruling Shiite Syrian regime and has forced thousands of Afghan refugees to serve as “cannon fodder” for the Syrian regime against rebel groups. Russian air support in Syria has proven pivotal to dictator Bashar al-Assad’s consolidation of power.

“Soleimani put the map of Syria on the table. The Russians were very alarmed, and felt matters were in steep decline and that there were real dangers to the regime. The Iranians assured them there is still the possibility to reclaim the initiative,” a senior regional official told Reuters in 2015. “At that time, Soleimani played a role in assuring them that we haven’t lost all the cards.”
The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement separate from Zakharova’s televised rant, similarly condemning the “escalation” in killing Soleimani.

“Washington’s step is fraught with grave consequences for regional peace and stability. We are guided by the premise that such actions are not conducive to finding solutions to the complex problems that have piled up in the Middle East. On the contrary, they lead to a new round of escalation of tensions in the region,” the statement read, according to Russian news agency TASS.

Elsewhere in the Russian government, lawmakers accused America of crossing a “red line,” a cynical callback to President Barack Obama using the term to indicate he would use the U.S. military to punish Bashar al-Assad if he used chemical weapons against civilians; Assad remains in power and is considered to have largely won the Syrian Civil War.

“The Americans have crossed the red line, and this time the consequences could be severe,” lawmaker Leonid Slutsky told reporters. Slutsky runs the Russian legislature’s international affairs committee.

Konstantin Kosachev, a Russian senator, called Soleimani’s death “the worst-case scenario.”

“This is very difficult news, a harbinger of new clashes between the Americans and radical Shiites in Iraq,” Kosachev told state propaganda outlet RIA Novosti. “But I will be glad to be proved wrong because wars are easy to start, but very difficult to end.”

Iran’s Khamenei Taunted Trump Before Soleimani Strike: ‘You Can’t Do Anything’

Office of the Iranian Supreme Leader via AP
By Thursday — Friday morning local time — U.S. forces had taken out Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in Iraq, thought to be behind recent attacks in Iraq, and responsible for hundreds of earlier American deaths in that country.

Trump had tweeted Wednesday, after an Iranian-backed militia stormed the U.S. embassy in Baghdad, Iraq, that Iran “will be held fully responsible for lives lost, or damage incurred, at any of our facilities. They will pay a very BIG PRICE!”

He added: “This is not a Warning, it is a Threat. Happy New Year!”

But Khamenei dismissed the threat, as did Iranian military leaders. Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) leader Major General Hossein Salami, who said that “we are not worried.”

That may have contributed to security lapses Thursday, when a U.S. airstrike, at President Trump’s command, took out Soleimani and a local militia leader traveling with him.

Thousands More US Troops Deploying to Middle East in Response to Iranian Threats

Thousands more U.S. troops will deploy to the Mideast in response to Iranian threats to avenge the killing of Quds Force Maj. Gen. Qasem Soleimani at Baghdad's International Airport on the order of President Donald Trump, the Pentagon said Friday.

The entire 1st Brigade Combat Team of the Army's 82nd Airborne Division, which constitutes the Immediate Response Force at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, "was alerted to prepare for deployment and is now being deployed," a Pentagon spokesperson said.

"The brigade will deploy to Kuwait as an appropriate and precautionary action in response to increased threat levels against U.S. personnel and facilities," the spokesperson said in a statement.

Elements of the 1st Brigade could also be sent to bolster security at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad following their arrival in Kuwait, according to sources.

On Wednesday, about 750 paratroopers from 82nd's 2nd Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, boarded C-17 Globemaster aircraft en route to Kuwait following the storming of the Baghdad Embassy's perimeter. The brigade has a total of about 4,000 troops.

At an off-camera Pentagon briefing Thursday, both Defense Secretary Mark Esper and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley said that additional deployments were under consideration.

Esper said that about 100 Marines in Kuwait were initially sent to back up embassy security but added: "We are prepared to reinforce other positions throughout the region as required over the coming days."

Milley said, "There's a variety of forces that are alerted and prepared, if necessary" to deploy, "depending on the situation as we move forward."

Both Milley and Esper spoke before the U.S. strike on an access road to the Baghdad airport that hit a two-car convoy carrying the 62-year-old Soleimani, leader of the Quds (Jerusalem) Force within Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Defense officials declined to say how the strike was carried out, but Iraqi state media said the attack came from a drone firing missiles. Iran's official media later confirmed that Soleimani had been killed.

In Tehran, Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamene, called for three days of mourning for the death of Soleimani, charged by the U.S. as being responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American troops in Iraq through his direction and supply of Shiite paramilitaries who fought against the U.S. invasion.

In a statement published by Iran's Fars news agency, Khamenei said, "A forceful revenge awaits the criminals who have his blood and the blood of the other martyrs last night on their hands."
Iran's President Hassan Rouhani called Soleimani's killing a "heinous crime," adding that "Iran will take revenge."

In a series of tweets, Trump said that Soleimani was not the revered figure he was made out to be by Iran's leadership.
"While Iran will never be able to properly admit it, [Soleimani] was both hated and feared within the country," Trump wrote. "They are not nearly as saddened as the leaders will let the outside world believe. He should have been taken out many years ago!"

The U.S. currently has a total of about 60,000 troops in the Mideast, including 5,000 in Iraq, according to Esper. The total includes about 14,000 sent to the region since last May to shore up defenses against Iran.

Report: Obama Administration Stopped Israel From Assassinating Soleimani in 2015

    By Tyler O'Neil January 3, 2020

When President Donald Trump gave the order to kill Iran's Quds Force leader Qasem Soleimani, he not only made an arguably proportionate response to the invasion of the U.S. Embassy this week but he also reversed a policy of the Obama administration. According to a report from 2018, Israel was "on the verge" of assassinating Soleimani in 2015, but Obama's officials foiled the plan. In fact, they reached out to Iran with news of Israel's plans.

The Trump administration, on the other hand, gave Israel a green light to assassinate Soleimani, according to a January 1, 2018 report from the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Jarida. The paper quoted a source in Jerusalem as saying that "there is an American-Israeli agreement" that Soleimani is a "threat to the two countries' interests in the region." According to Haaretz, Al-Jarida is generally assumed to be a platform for the Israeli government to disseminate its message to other Middle Eastern governments.

According to the report, the agreement between Israel and the U.S. came three years after Washington thwarted an Israeli attempt to kill the Iranian general.

"The report says Israel was 'on the verge' of assassinating Soleimani three years ago, near Damascus, but the United States warned the Iranian leadership of the plan, revealing that Israel was closely tracking the Iranian general," Haaretz reported.

The incident "sparked a sharp disagreement between the Israeli and American security and intelligence apparatuses regarding the issue." That sounds like an understatement.

President Barack Obama frequently snubbed Israel, considered by many to be America's best ally in the Middle East. Yet the news that the Obama's administration prevented Israel from assassinating the Quds Force leader seems particularly significant, since the Obama administration also kept a list of approximately 500 American soldiers who were murdered by Iranian IEDs. Since the Quds Force spearheads Iran's operations outside the Islamic Republic, Soleimani would arguably be responsible for all of those deaths.

When Trump finally gave the order to kill the Quds Force leader, it came after multiple attacks against Americans and American facilities in Iraq — attacks that arguably traced back to Soleimani himself.

The Iran-backed Iraqi militia Kata'ib Hezbollah began the escalating tensions with a rocket attack on a U.S.-led coalition base on December 27. That attack killed a U.S. contractor and left many American and Iraqi personnel wounded. According to the Pentagon, Soleimani ordered that attack.

In response, America launched airstrikes against the militia, killing 25 militiamen. In retaliation, the militiamen stormed the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, invading American soil. The Pentagon claimed that Soleimani "approved the attacks on the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad that took place this week."

Killing Soleimani is a powerful response to the embassy attack, an attack that arguably constituted an act of war.

According to the Pentagon, "General Soleimani was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region. General Soleimani and his Quds Force were responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American and coalition service members and the wounding of thousands more."

Even the Democrats who faulted Trump for ordering the airstrikes still admitted that Soleimani was a horrible foe of the U.S.

While former Vice President Joe Biden attacked Trump for tossing "a stick of dynamite into a tinderbox," he admitted that "no American will mourn Qassem Soleimani's passing. He deserved to be brought to justice for his crimes against American troops and thousands of innocents throughout the region. He supported terror and sowed chaos." Yet the former vice president still faulted Trump for "a hugely escalatory move in an already dangerous region."

"Soleimani was a murderer, responsible for the deaths of thousands, including hundreds of Americans. But this reckless move escalates the situation with Iran and increases the likelihood of more deaths and new Middle East conflict," Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) tweeted Thursday. "Our priority must be to avoid another costly war."

Soleimani was a murderer, responsible for the deaths of thousands, including hundreds of Americans. But this reckless move escalates the situation with Iran and increases the likelihood of more deaths and new Middle East conflict. Our priority must be to avoid another costly war.

    8:20 PM - 2 Jan 2020
If the Pentagon is correct and Soleimani orchestrated the invasion of the U.S. Embassy, the airstrike against him is proportionate. If war comes, it will be the fault of Iran, not Trump.

It will also be the fault of the Obama administration, which thwarted Israel's attempt to stop Soleimani five years ago. How many Americans have died because the Obama administration prevented Israel from carrying out this hit?

FAMILY BUSINESS: John Kerry’s Secret Talks With Iran After Daughter Married Iranian National; Best Man Was Son Of Iran’s Secretary of State

Former Secretary of State John Kerry has fielded dozens of private meetings and phone calls in recent months in an effort to meddle with U.S. foreign policy in Iran, as President Trump has dropped $200 billion in sanctions against Iran.

Trump threatened retaliation against Iran over the holidays after Iran-backed protesters tried to overrun the U.S. Embassy in Iraq.

Kerry was the lead negotiator who handed Iran over $150 Billion in U.S. cash for what was then-spun as a Nuclear deal. Trump dissolved the supposed deal but Iran still kept the money, thanks to Kerry and his boss Barack Obama.

If he weren’t a corrupt bureaucrat, John Kerry would have recused himself from all negotiations with Iran and for that matter, Israel, especially during his tenure as secretary of state. Instead, his leadership has proven an epic disaster of foreign policy for the United States, especially in the Middle East.

Family and personal wealth before country. That mantra has served Sec. of State John Kerry well during his decades of public service.

Kerry’s daughter Vanessa is married to an Iranian national and physician. His best man at the ceremony was the son of Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iran’s Minister of Foreign Affairs — the position comparable to U.S. Sec of State.

Zarif was also and Kerry’s chief counterpart in the nuclear deal negotiations.

    A Cozy crew.

Look no further why Kerry hates Israel and has green lighted billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars to Iran to build its nuclear arsenal. And don’t forget about the millions of dollars paid to Iran in ransoms to get our American hostages back.

The Boston Globe reported that Kerry, who helped broker the 2015 nuclear agreement, met with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif at the United Nations in New York to discuss ways to salvage the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) — the formal name for the Iran deal.

He has also met and spoken with a handful of European officials. Last month, he met with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, according to the Globe, and spoke by phone with Federica Mogherini, the European Union’s top foreign affairs official.

Soleimani's daughter warns families of U.S. troops, 'waiting' for their death

    Published 1 hour ago

The daughter of slain Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani warned the families of U.S. soldiers deployed in the Middle East that they "will spend their days waiting for the death of their children" during the funeral Monday in Tehran.

While speaking to a vast crowd at Enqelab-e-Eslami (Islamic Revolution) square, Soleimani's daughter, Zeinab, directly threatened an attack on the U.S. military in the region, following an increase in tensions between Tehran and Washington.

"Families of the American soldiers in western Asia have witnessed America's humiliation in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Yemen and Palestine wars, and will spend their days waiting for the death of their children," she said in Farsi, which was translated by the Associated Press.

During the funeral, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei -- who had a close relationship with Soleimani -- wept and prayed over his casket and the caskets of others killed during traditional Muslim prayers for the dead.

Esmail Ghaani, the general replacing Soleimani reportedly stood near Khamenei during the funeral. Iranian President Hassan Rouhbaani and other top leaders within the Islamic Republic were also in attendance.

Demonstrators unfurled red Shiite flags, which traditionally symbolize both the spilled blood of someone unjustly killed and a call for vengeance.

The processions mark the first time Iran honored a single man with a multi-city ceremony. Not even Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who founded the Islamic Republic, received such a processional with his death in 1989. Soleimani on Monday will lie in state at Tehran’s famed Musalla mosque as the revolutionary leader did before him.

Soleimani will be buried in his hometown of Kerman.

Nancy Pelosi to Introduce Resolution Implying Pre-emptive Surrender to Iran

    JOEL B. POLLAK6 Jan 2020

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) wrote a letter to her Democrat colleagues in the House on Sunday to reveal a new “War Powers Resolution” that amounts to a pre-emptive surrender to Iran in ongoing hostilities.

Pelosi’s letter begins with the declaration that President Donald Trump’s airstrike last week targeting Iranian General Qasem Suleimani, leader of the terrorist Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IGRC) Quds Force, responsible for the murders of hundreds of Americans and for recent attacks on the U.S. embassy in Baghdad, was “provocative and disproportionate,” terms suggesting the attack was illegal under international law and could constitute a war crime.

Harvard Law School professor emeritus (and Democrat) Alan Dershowitz argued in Monday’s Wall Street Journal that the strike was not only lawful, but an “easy call”: “The president has the constitutional authority to take military actions, short of declaring war, that he and his advisers deem necessary to protect American citizens. This authority is extremely broad, especially when the actions must, by their nature, be kept secret from the intended target.”

Nonetheless, Pelosi’s letter indicates that the House will declare the president’s action illegal under international law.
The letter further claims that Trump’s action “endangered our servicemembers, diplomats and others by risking a serious escalation of tensions with Iran” — placing the responsibility for violence not on Iran, which recently attacked a U.S. Navy drone; a Saudi oil field; and, via proxies, Americans soldiers and civilians in Iraq; but on the United States, which had restrained itself until the recent assault by an Iranian-backed militia on the embassy.

The letter goes on to describe a new resolution that would “limit the President’s military actions regarding Iran,” essentially signaling a surrender in the potential conflict before the Iranian regime itself had managed to respond.

Pelosi adds that the resolution “reasserts Congress’s long-established oversight responsibilities by mandating that if no further Congressional action is taken, the Administration’s military hostilities with regard to Iran cease within 30 days.” Under current law, the War Powers Act of 1973 limits the time that a president can lead a military effort, without formal authorization, to 60 days following a required presidential report to Congress when hostilities begin.

The new resolution, which Pelosi says mirrors a similar Senate bill by Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA), would amount to an effective surrender by signaling that the president had no congressional support for striking back against Iran, and imposing a new deadline for any military action that would give Iran greater freedom of action. Paradoxically, the resolution could force the president to choose more drastic measures of conducting a war effort before the deadline.

By declaring the attack “provocative and disproportionate,” the resolution also invites international prosecution of the president, as well as members of the administration and the military itself, who carry out his orders. The U.S. does not recognize the authority of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to prosecute Americans for war crimes, but the ICC takes a different view, and a future Democratic administration might well side with the ICC instead.

Pelosi’s letter indicates that the new “War Powers Resolution” will be introduced and voted on this week. She has not yet indicated when she will transfer the articles of impeachment passed by the House on Dec. 18 to the Senate, which she claims is a necessary prerequisite to the Senate holding a trial on the president’s removal from office.

    by Tyler Durden

    Tue, 01/07/2020 - 14:35

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation has offered Iraq Tuesday the option to purchase the world's most advanced missile defense system to protect its airspace, reported RIA Novosti.

According to the report, the Iraqi Armed Forces could purchase the Russian S-400 Triumf air defense system, which RIA points out, can "ensure the country's sovereignty and reliable airspace protection."

"Iraq is a partner of Russia in the field of military-technical cooperation, and the Russian Federation can supply the necessary funds to ensure the sovereignty of the country and reliable protection of airspace, including the supply of S-400 missiles and other components of the air defense system, such as Buk-M3, Tor -M2 "and so on," said Igor Korotchenko, Russian Defense Ministry's Public Council member.

Russian Warship 'Aggressively Approaches' A US Navy Destroyer In The Arabian Sea, Coming Within Just 60 Yards Of A Collision After Ignoring Five Warnings

    January 10, 2020

A Russian navy ship 'aggressively approached' a U.S. Navy destroyer in the North Arabian Sea on Thursday, the US Navy's Bahrain-based Fifth Fleet said in a statement on Friday.

The Fifth Fleet said the US destroyer USS Farragut sounded five short blasts and requested the Russian ship alter course.

'The Russian ship initially refused but ultimately altered course and the two ships opened distance from one another,' the statement said.

A Russian warship got dangerously close to a US destroyer in the Arabian this week, forcing the American vessel to sound off five loud blasts of its horn The blasts helped avoid a collision between the two (pictured)

The Russian warship is seen video footage released by the US Navy, inching dangerously close to the USS Farragut on Thursday

Tensions are high in the Middle East after a December 27 US drone attack killed Quds commander Qassem Soleimani, a key leader in Iran, which fired back with missile strikes.

Russia has been a main backer of Syria's dictator Bashar al-Assad, and has tipped the balance of power in his favor over the past four years with government forces now in control in most of the country.

Iran, and Soleimani in particular, also helped defend the Assad regime during the country's nine-year civil war and led troops in recapturing large parts of the country as the tide turned in his favor.

Vladimir Putin even visited Syria a day before Wednesday's Iranian strike on Iraqi bases housing US forces, causing extensive damage, but no loss of life.

President Trump said Iran 'appears to be standing down' after the missiles strike preceded Friday's close encounter in the North Arabian Sea.

The Farragut was conducting routine operations in the North Arabian Seawhen it was was 'aggressively approached' by the unnamed Russian Navy ship, said Commander Joshua Frey, a spokesman for the US 5th Fleet.

The US Fifth Fleet tweeted Friday about the close encounter between a Russian warship and the USS Farragut in the North Arabian Sea a day earlier

The Fifth Fleet's follow up tweets detail how the Russian ship finally 'took action,' adding that the 'initial delay in complying with international rules while it was making an aggressive approach increased the risk of collision'

'Farragut sounded five short blasts, the international maritime signal for danger of a collision, and requested the Russian ship alter course in accordance with international rules of the road,' Frey said in a released statement.

'The Russian ship initially refused but ultimately altered course and the two ships opened distance from one another,' the spokesman said.

'While the Russian ship took action, the initial delay in complying with international rules while it was making an aggressive approach increased the risk of collision.'

The Russia warship is seen in footage released by the navy after it altered course to avoid a collisson with the Farragut

Pictured, the USS Farragut, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer and fifth Navy ship named for Admiral David Farragut. It was commissioned in June 2006

The close encounter between a Russian warship and USS Farragut took place in the North Arabian Sea

Russia and the US blamed each other for a near collision between their warships in the East China Sea in June, with both countries accusing one another of dangerous and unprofessional behavior.

Russia's Pacific Fleet said that the USS Chancellorsville, a guided-missile cruiser, had come within just 50 meters (165 feet) of the Russian destroyer Admiral Vinogradov, which had been forced to take emergency action to avoid a collision, Russian news agencies reported.

They cited a Russian Pacific Fleet statement as saying the incident took place in the early hours of June 5 in the eastern part of the East China Sea at a time when a group of Russian warships was on a parallel course with a US naval strike group.

'The US guided-missile cruiser Chancellorsville suddenly changed course and cut across the path of the destroyer Admiral Vinogradov coming within 50 meters of the ship,' the statement said.

'A protest over the international radio frequency was made to the commanders of the American ship who were warned about the unacceptable nature of such actions,' it said.

The USS Chancellorsville (pictured) was involved when Russia and the US blamed each other for a near collision between their warships in the East China Sea in June, with both countries accusing one another of dangerous and unprofessional behavior

That version of events was rejected by the US Navy, which said the behavior of the Russian ship had been 'unsafe and unprofessional.'

'While operating in the Philippine Sea, a Russian Destroyer...made an unsafe maneuver against USS Chancellorsville,' U.S. Seventh Fleet spokesman Commander Clayton Doss said.

'This unsafe action forced Chancellorsville to execute all engines back full and to maneuver to avoid collision.'
