Cold warrior? Russian 'ghost' spacecraft could be satellite-killer

Object 2014-28E is being closely watched by Western powers as it maneuvers close to other Russian-made crafts, leading to theories that it is a Cold War-style space killer.

Alexander Astafyev/AP Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev (third right) visits a space launch pad in Plesetsk, northwestern Russia on Wednesday.

Did Russia launch a satellite killer?

Amateur astronomers and Western military observers have been tracking Object 2014-28E, an undeclared "ghost" spacecraft blasted into orbit in May as part of a cluster of military satellites.

Unlike a December 2013 launch where Russians alerted the United Nations of four new satellites, just three spacecraft were declared in this payload. But U.S. radar picked up a fourth object, according to Russian Space Web.

The U.S. military has begun tracking the Russian spacecraft as Norad designation 39765, but its true task is still far from clear and speculation points to a vehicle that repairs or refuels existing satellites to one that sucks up space junk, the Financial Times reported.

Yet there's another possible mission for the mystery craft: Cold War-style satellite killer.

"Whatever it is, (Object 2014-28E) looks experimental," space security expert Patricia Lewis of think tank Chatham House told FT. "It could have a number of functions, some civilian and some military. One possibility is for some kind of grabber bar. Another would be kinetic pellets which shoot out at another satellite. Or possibly there could be a satellite-to-satellite cyber attack or jamming."

Object 2014-28E is drawing such close scrutiny because it rendezvoused with another Russian-made vehicle between Nov. 8-9, coming within a half mile of each other, Russian Space Web reported.

The Russian ministry of defense has been mum, but its space forces reportedly resumed its anti-satellite weapons program in 2010 after the former superpower reportedly shuttered it with the fall of the Soviet Union.

"It would be odd if space were to remain the one area that (militaries) don't get their hands on," Lewis told FT.

Russian 'Satellite Catcher' Test a Step Toward Advanced Cyber Attacks?

by Jed Babbin 20 Nov 2014, 7:16 AM PDT post a comment
America’s near-total dependence on satellites for the most important elements of national security – secure communications, reconnaissance, intelligence gathering and navigation – has naturally attracted our adversaries’ efforts to counter our space-based advantages.

Those advantages – in intelligence gathering especially – are great, but come at a considerable cost. The price of a classified intelligence satellite can easily exceed $1 billion and the cost to launch one can be $200 million or more. The whole alphabet soup of intelligence agencies – including the CIA, NSA and NRO (the National Reconnaissance Office) – are highly dependent on such satellites to gather essential intelligence.
Russia’s current test of what is almost certainly a satellite-interceptor has gained even the attention of some mainstream media. But the media attention given the Russian test may act to mask the cyberwar measures being developed by Russia and other nations in concert with these other weapons.
The BBC report on Russia’s “satellite catcher” test was sufficient only to expose the obvious development of the most detectable – and thus least likely usable – of the several anti-satellite weapons we know about. Russia, China and America have been testing weapons capable of intercept a satellite intention for the purpose of capturing or destroying the objects. But that would be ruled out in times of peace – even the quasi-peace that prevails today – because that kind of interception could not be done without the satellite’s operator being able to track and identify the attacker. Capturing or destroying an adversary’s defense system satellites would be an act of war.
But vastly less detectable – and of much greater value to any enemy – would be the ability for a non-kinetic attack: a cyber attack that could enable the interception of intelligence and communications or even the manipulation of them to an enemy’s advantage.
The capability to do that is precisely what both Russia and China – and possibly others – are trying right now to create. We know, for example, that a cyber attack in October on weather satellites operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) disrupted the agency’s ability to send weather information to forecasters and to the military, which relies in part on NOAA weather data.
The NOAA cyber attack was probably perpetrated by the Chinese. It followed other cyber attacks - also likely by China –on White House emails and the U.S. Postal Service. Which brings us back to the mysterious Russian “satellite catcher” reported by the BBC.
The object has been labeled “Number 39765” by the North American Aerospace Defense Command, and is also known as object “2014-28E.” Its behavior has generated intense speculation within the aerospace community. The satellite has apparently approached other Russian satellites at very close range. Is it intended to repair old satellites? Is it aiming to insert malicious software into them? Is it capable of shooting ballistic pellets at them? Does it have internal jammers capable of disabling a satellite while the interceptor is in range? None of my sources can say.

Mysterious Russian satellite, Object 2014-28E, raises fears we may be on the edge of a space arms race

A STRANGE new Russian satellite has the US and NATO nervous: It’s not doing what satellites normally do, sparking fears it is really a secret “star wars” killer.

When originally launched back in May, Western observers thought the strange signal in orbit was simply some wayward debris from a normally scheduled Russian military rocket launch.

    Perhaps they were supposed to.

But now, it’s shifting orbits. It’s under power, and its purpose remains unknown.

It’s now high on the NORAD — North American space defence command — watchlist for suspicious objects. They designated it 39765.

The Russians call it Kosmos 2499. NATO named it Object 2014-28E.

It’s not the first new Russian satellite to behave strangely.

In December last year, a Russian booster publicly deploying three new communications satellites was tracked secretly launching a fourth.

As with Object 2014-28E, it was initially thought to be yet another piece of potentially dangerous space junk. Then it started moving.

But the new satellite has been tracked more closely. It was seen following a peculiar, but very precise, series of course changes across the skies.

After undergoing this series of orbital shifts, it moved back to rendezvous with the launch module which carried it into space.

Killer satellites designed to disrupt communications and surveillance systems in near orbit have long been an international fear.

After all, the Chinese have recently tested just such a weapon several times. In one instance, the resulting debris cloud of pulverised satellite has caused long-lasting headaches for anyone in the space business.

Or it could be any number of secret experiments the Russians simply don’t want to openly talk about.

    Like the US does.

    Bump...

So today I posted a thread about a Chinese satellite or rocket body breaking up over the Midwest.

What is VERY interesting about it, is this is the second time this has happened recently. A Russian and a Chinese satellite I believe, and both of them followed very similar paths.

Rockot launches three Gonets-M satellites and Cosmos-2504 small satellite

On March 31, 2015 at 16:47:56 MSK (13:47:56 UTC) the Space Forces conducted a successful launch of a Rockot space launcher with Briz-KM booster stage from the launch pad No. 3 of the launch complex No. 133 of the Plesetsk test site. The launcher delivered into orbit three Gonets-M communication satellites (21L, 22L, and 23L) and a small satellite designated as Cosmos-2504.

According to the designer of the system, the Information Satellite Systems, this launch completes the deployment of the Gonets-D1M communication system, which now includes 12 satellites. Previous Gonets-M launch took place in July 2014. Russia alos operates a military counterpart of the Gonets system, known as Strela (or Rodnik). The most recent launch of this program took place in May 2014.

The Gonets satellites have been assigned NORAD catalog numbers 40552, 40553, and 40554, their international designations are 2015-020A, 2015-020B, and 2015-020C.
The Cosmos-2504 satellite, launched along with the Gonets-Ms, is believed to be a small maneuvering satellite similar to Cosmos-2499, which was also a supplementary payload in the May 2014 launch. It appears that its the object 2015-020D/40555.

Russia Soon To Complete its Military Space Communication System

    By Paul Antonopoulos

MOSCOW, Russia – A new military satellite will culminate in the formation of Russia’s orbital telecommunications group, due to be put into orbit as scheduled in April 2019.

According to a source in the Russian space rocket industry, this is the Blagovest communication satellite system.

“The transfer of the satellite to the Baikonur cosmodrome (Kazakhstan) is scheduled for the end of February. The launch, by means of a Proton-M rocket, is scheduled for the first half of April,” the source said.

The orbiting of the Blagovest system’s satellites began in 2017. Since then, three military aircraft have been launched. The process began with the launch on August 17, 2017 of the first satellite in the series, the Kosmos 2520.

The second satellite, Kosmos 2526, was put into orbit on April 19, 2018. The launch on December 21 was the third of the military communications system.

The Blagovest heavy satellites were designed by the company Satellites Information Systems (ISS, Russian acronym) commissioned by the Ministry of Defense of Russia.

The orbital system will include four satellites and will ensure military coverage of the country and access to high-speed data transmission, television programs, the Internet, telephony and other types of communication. The satellites are expected to operate in orbit for 15 years.

Meanwhile, the American communications satellite Orbcomm FM16, launched in August 1998, broke down at the end of December 2018, causing 34 orbits to appear in orbit.

The information was released by the 18th Space Control Squadron (18 SPCS) of the US Air Force.

The disintegration of the space apparatus was not caused by collision with another object. The US military does not detail whether debris can threaten other satellites.

According to the n2yo portal, before disintegrating, the Orbcomm FM16 satellite, launched in August 1998, was in orbit with a 45 degree incline at a height of approximately 790 km.

The 18th Space Control Squadron is headquartered at Vanderberg Air Force Base, California, and deals with the recognition and identification of all man-made objects in low-Earth orbit.

U.S. Space Command Chief Sounds Alarm On ‘Unusual And Disturbing’ Russian Activity

    December 22, 2020

A pair of Russian satellites has been exhibiting “unusual and disturbing behavior” that could lead to a dangerous situation as they flew near a U.S. government spy satellite, the commander of U.S. Space Command said this week.

According to Time, the Russian spacecraft were launched in November and have crept within 100 miles of the American satellite USA 245 at certain times.

“The Russian satellites launched in 2017 exhibited characteristics of a weapon when one of those satellites released a high-speed projectile into space,” Space Force Gen. John “Jay” Raymond said in a statement, according to CBS News.

“Similar activities in any other domain would be interpreted as potentially threatening behavior,” he said. “This is unusual and disturbing behavior that has the potential to create a dangerous situation in space.”

Raymond also criticized Russia for this behavior, saying that it does not “reflect the behavior of a responsible spacefaring nation.”

The Kremlin has previously said that the satellites in question were not space weapons but “inspector” spacecraft conducting an “experiment,” according to Time.

“The purpose of the experiment is to continue work on assessing the technical condition of domestic satellites,” Russia’s Defense Ministry said in December, according to the TASS news agency.

U.S. officials have been in contact with Russia about the issue, according to Russia’s deputy foreign minister, Sergei Ryabkov.

“We in fact received appropriate signals from them, and we [will] give answers to these signals after they are processed internally in necessary formats,” Ryabkov told Russia’s Interfax news agency, CBS News reported.

This confrontation is the first publicly identified direct threat to an American satellite and demonstrates the need for the newly minted Space Force, according to Pentagon, White House and congressional supporters.

Echoing sentiments felt during the Cold War, the Space Force has shifted focus to defending satellites and mobilizing against perceived threats from other nations, such as Russia and China, according to Time.

However, there are a few people in Washington who do not feel that such measures are necessary, the report said.

“The last thing we need is more bureaucracy at the Pentagon, but that’s exactly what the Space Force is likely to give us,” William D. Hartung, the director of the Center for International Policy’s arms and security project, said.

“Creating a separate branch of the armed forces for space also risks militarizing U.S. space policy and promoting ill-advised and dangerous projects that could involve deploying weapons in space,” he said.

Michael Thompson, an amateur satellite tracker, noted Russia’s space activities in a series of tweets last week.

“The relative orbit is actually pretty cleverly designed where Cosmos 2542 can observe one side of the KH11 when both satellites first come into the sunlight, and by the time they enter eclipse, it has migrated to the other side,” he tweeted.

Thompson also pointed out that when the Russian satellites were launched, Russia said only Russian satellites would be inspected.

“This is all circumstantial evidence, but there are a hell of a lot of circumstances that make it look like a known Russian inspection satellite is currently inspecting a known US spy satellite,” he wrote.

We have been putting stuff in space a long time now..... "Super secret space shuttle" as a carry vehicle.

We have satellites that can look in all directions now.

We can zoom in on a gnat's ass on the moon, if there were gnats on the moon.

We had a Space Force before it was cool to be called "space force". (Now, we are "Guardians of the Galaxy" LOL)
