hooo Boy.... as Sam used to say when he found himself in another weird situation.

I just looked and can find NOTHING ELSE on this but the blurb you put out Ryan.

It was digged, dug, twittered, tweeted, facebooked, spacenetted (ok, I made that last one one up) but they all say the SAME THING.

    Nothing more or less.

Ten Alleged Russian Spies Arrested in U.S. After Multi-Year Investigation

Ten alleged Russian spies were arrested in the U.S., the Justice Department said in a statement today.

The arrests, which took place yesterday in the New York area, in Boston and in Arlington, Virginia, are the result of a multi-year investigation by U.S. authorities, according to the statement.

Two separate criminal complaints charge 11 individuals, including the 10 arrested, with conspiring to act as illegal agents of the Russian Federation within the U.S., according to the Justice Department statements.

The 10 defendants are expected to appear in court today. The 11th has not yet been arrested, according to the statement.

Nine of the defendants are charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering.
The defendants face as many as 20 years in prison on the money laundering conspiracy charges. The charges of conspiracy to act as an agent of a foreign government without notifying the U.S. attorney general carries up to five years in prison.

Russian Spies Arrested In N.Y., N.J.

Updated: Monday, 28 Jun 2010, 4:25 PM EDT

    BY LUKE FUNK

MYFOXNY.COM - The Justice Department says 10 Russian spies were arrested over the weekend. Many of the arrests came in the New York area.

The feds say the spies were carrying out long-term, “deep-cover” assignments on behalf of the Russian Federation.

In total, 11 defendants, including the 10 arrested, are charged in two separate criminal complaints.

The FBI claims that a network of illegals is now living and operating in the United States in an effort to become sufficiently "Americanized" such that they can gather information about the United States for Russia and recruit sources who are in, or are able to infiltrate U.S. policy-making circles.

Nine of the defendants are also charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering.
Two people going by the names Richard Murphy and Cynthia Murphy were arrested yesterday by FBI agents at their home in Montclair, N.J. They were expected to appear in federal court in Manhattan on Monday.

Vicky Pelaez and the defendant known as “Juan Lazaro” were arrested Sunday at their Yonkers, N.Y. home. They were also due in federal court on Monday.

Anna Chapman was arrested in Manhattan.

Several others were arrested in Virginia and Boston.

The defendant known as “Christopher R. Metsos” remains at large.

The charges are filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

The charge of conspiracy to act as an agent of a foreign government without notifying the U.S. Attorney General carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison. All the defendants are charged with this violation. The charge of conspiracy to commit money laundering carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. All the defendants except Chapman and Semenko are charged with this violation.

This case is the result of a multi-year investigation conducted by the FBI; the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York; and the Counterespionage Section and the Office of Intelligence within the Justice Department’s National Security Division.

Ten arrested, accused of spying for Russia

Ten arrested, accused of spying for Russia Domenico Montanaro writes: President Obama, cheeseburgers in tow, stressed last week during his meetings with the Russian president that there had been a real thaw in relations with the United States' former Cold War adversary.

Less than a week later, the Department of Justice announced today the arrests of 10 men and women, from Virginia to Boston, accused of spying for Russia.

NBC's Robert Windrem reports that the complaint in today's indictment and round up of the suspected agents details a spy novel-like operation that includes false identities, secret communications, money and document handoffs in heavily trafficked areas of New York City like Grand Central Station and Central Park.

Some of those arrested have lived undercover in the United States for 20 years. Those arrested were described by the Justice Department as "deep cover" agents operating on behalf of the SVR, the successor to the KGB. One law enforcement official described today's takedown as "historic", the rounding up of the SVR's entire "illegals" program.

The complaint does not allege they were involved in espionage but imply they had been set up to carry out intelligence gathering. They were sent to the United States and told not to get government jobs but to set themselves up as "normal citizens," the official said.

They were tasked to get in touch with "influential" Americans -- college professors, contractors, congressional staffers. The Russians, trained and directed from "Moscow Center," were given Americanized names.

The defendants known as "Richard Murphy" and "Cynthia Murphy" from Montclair, N.J., Vicky Pelaez and the defendant known as "Juan Lazaro" were living in Yonkers, N.Y., Anna Chapman was living in Manhattan.

In addition, other defendants were known as "Donald Howard Heathfield" and "Tracey Lee Ann Foley" lived in Boston. A defendant known as "Christopher R. Metsos" remains at large. Eight of the ten arrested posed as married couples.

WNBC's Jonathan Dienst reports, at least some of them are expected to face arraignment this afternoon in federal court in New York City and Alexandria, Va.

    *** UPDATE ***

More from Windrem: How do Russian spies identify each other?

According the complaint, one way sounds a lot like it was stolen from a BAD spy novel.

As part of an elaborate plan to hand-off a phony passport on a New York park bench, one party was supposed to ask the other, "Excuse me, but haven't we met in California, last summer."

To that the second party was to respond,

"No, I think it was the Hamptons."

At that point, the passport was to be turned over.

The complaint also details how the group was provided tens of thousands of dollars to carry out its mission.

In addition, the SVR approved the purchase of a house in Montclair, NJ that was used by the key couple named in the complaint.

That was my question. They were being put in place to infiltrate the policy making aparatus of the government. Did they miss that they already have agents leading the Presidency, House, and Senate?

Brian Ross from ABC reports two of those arrested were from the town near "Ray's Hell Burger" location at which Obama and Medvedev had lunch last week:

Two additional defendants, Anna Chapman and Mikhail Semenko, were also arrested Sunday for allegedly aiding in the same suspected Russian spy ring.

The arrests come just days after Russian President Dmitry Medvedev met President Barack Obama in Washington, DC and shared hamburgers and French fries at a Virginia restaurant, not far from where Zottoli and Mills were living.

Russia says U.S. spy accusations baseless and improper

    (2010-06-29)
    (Reuters) - By Alexei Anishchuk

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia on Tuesday said U.S. allegations that it had broken up a major Russian spy ring just days after President Dmitry Medvedev met Barack Obama in Washington were baseless and improper.

U.S. authorities said on Monday they had arrested 10 suspected spies who had recruited political sources and gathered information for the Russian government.

"Such actions are baseless and improper," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement. "We do not understand what prompted the U.S. Justice Department to make a public statement in the spirit of Cold War espionage."

"We deeply regret that all of this has happened against the background of the relations reset declared by the U.S. administration," it said.

U.S. authorities have charged 11 individuals with carrying out deep-cover work in the United States to recruit political sources and gather information for the Russian government.

The individuals were accused of collecting information ranging from research programs on small-yield, high-penetration nuclear warheads, the global gold market and trying to obtain background on people who applied for jobs at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), according to criminal complaints filed in a U.S. federal court.

The Justice Department accused them of operating under orders of Russia's SVR agency as "illegals"; the term applied in the intelligence world to agents infiltrated to live and operate under false identities, rather than officers who use diplomatic cover or other legitimate cover.

Authorities said 10 of them were arrested on Sunday in Boston, New York, New Jersey and Virginia on charges including conspiracy to act as unlawful agents of the Russian Federation and money laundering.

Moscow has repeatedly accused Western powers of maintaining spying operations against Russia despite the end of the Cold War. Western powers also complain of Russian activity, especially in the commercial and scientific area.

    BLOW TO OBAMA

The allegations come just days after Obama hailed a "reset" in ties between the former Cold War rivals when the two leaders met in Washington.

Medvedev last week toured the United States to try to show that Russia is building an innovative, investor-friendly economy. The U.S. Justice Department announced the arrests hours after Medvedev returned to Russia from a G20 summit in Toronto, which was also attended by Obama.

"The choice of timing was particularly graceful," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told journalists during a trip to Jerusalem.

Russian analysts said the timing suggested it was an attempt by U.S. officials to undermine the reset, which Obama's administration has hailed as a major foreign policy achievement.

"It's is a slap in the face to Barack Obama," said Anatoly Tsyganok, a political analyst at Moscow's Institute of Political and Military Analysis.

Russia will inevitably follow Cold War etiquette and uncover an equal number of U.S. spies, he said.

The chief spokesman for Prime Minister Vladimir Putin told Reuters he had no comment on the spying allegations and said the allegations were unlikely to be discussed during Putin's meeting on Tuesday with former U.S. President Bill Clinton in Moscow.

The chief spokesman for the SVR foreign intelligence service, Sergei Ivanov, said: "There will be no comment."

The goal of the alleged spies was to "become sufficiently 'Americanized' such that they could gather information about the United States for Russia and can successfully recruit sources who are in, or are able to infiltrate, United States policy-making circles," according to court papers.

One alleged spy was accused of sending back information about leadership changes at the CIA.

The U.S. Justice Department said they received extensive training in coded communications, how to evade detection and how to pass messages to other agents while casually brushing past them in public places.

The arrests are the culmination of a multi-year investigation that used extensive surveillance of communications and wiretaps, including putting listening devices into the homes of the accused individuals, the Justice Department said.

Clinton confidant believes he might have been spies' target

    By Jason Horowitz
    Washington Post staff writer
    Tuesday, June 29, 2010; 6:51 PM

Alan Patricof, a longtime confidant of Bill and Hillary Clinton and a powerhouse Democratic fundraiser, said Tuesday evening that he believed himself to be the mysterious "prominent New York-based financier" allegedly targeted by a Russian spy ring.

Patricof said he was as surprised as everyone else by his involvement, albeit peripherally, with the spies.

"It's just staggering," said Patricof in a telephone interview. "It's off the charts."

Patricof made clear that he and the alleged spy, known as Cynthia Murphy, "never discussed anything but paying the bills and taxes in normal phone calls or meetings." For three years, he has been a client of the Manhattan firm Morea Financial Services, the tax service that employed Murphy.

"She never once asked me about government, politics or anything remotely close to that subject," Patricof said.

The politically connected investor was first identified by the Politico's Ben Smith as the possible mark of the alleged spy.

A shocked Patricof reiterated in the interview that, "We never discussed anything but paying the bills."

According to a federal complaint filed in New York, the alleged spy's superiors apparently saw promise in the connection to the unidentified financier.

They suggested that he could supply "remarks re US foreign policy," and "roumors" about White House internal "kitchen."

"This is the most wild story ever," said Patricof.

Clinton friend may have been spy's target

    June 29, 2010

    Categories:

A leading Democratic fundraiser and close political ally of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton may have been a target of the alleged ring of Russian spies arrested yesterday by federal authorities.

The president of the high-end tax accounting and financial advising firm Morea Financial Services confirmed earlier today that the alleged spy "Cynthia Murphy" was a longtime employee and a vice president at the company, which is located on lower Broadway in Manhattan.

Federal and state campaign finance filings suggest that the little-known company manages the finances of one of New York's top Democratic financiers: Alan Patricof, a venture capital figure and the finance chairman of Clinton's Senate campaign, as well as a top presidential campaign fundraiser.

According to the federal complaint, Murphy had "several work-related personal meetings" with a person it describes as "a prominent New York-based financier," and says she and her husband and alleged co-conspirator accurately reported back to Moscow that the financier was "prominent in politics" and "an active fundraiser for" a major political party, as well as "a personal friend" of a current Cabinet secretary, and in a position to provide information about foreign policy.

Murphy, the complaint says, was assigned this person's account.

Patricof fits those descriptions: He's a friend of Secretary Clinton as well as a major Democratic fundraiser.

He also appears to be a Morea client. A 2009 filing with the New York State Board of Elections lists him and his wife Susan "c/o Morea Financial Services," while a Federal Elections Commission document that year lists him as an employee of Morea Financial Services, likely a typo connected to his method of payment, but one which seems to confirm that he used the firm.

Moscow Center, the complaint said, replied to Murphy that the financier in question was a "very interesting target" and that she should "try to build up little by little relations with him moving beyond just [work]."

The target, Moscow Center suggested, could supply "remarks re US foreign policy" as well as 'roumors' about White House internal 'kitchen.'"

The complaint does not make clear whether Murphy was successful in obtaining information, or intensifying her connection, to her target.

Patricof didn't respond to an urgent message left with his office, including details of the connection, earlier this afternoon. Morea, who said she was "shocked" at the spying allegations, didn't respond to a later message asking about Patricof.

Murphy claimed on her LinkedIn page to have studied at both Columbia's and New York University's business schools. A person named Nancy Murphy is a 2000 graduate of New York University's Stern School of Management, a school official said today; another source confirmed that she had studied at Columbia. The complaint alleges that she was also tasked to spy on classmates.

The Dismantling of a Suspected Russian Intelligence Operation>>

    > >
By Fred Burton and Ben West | July 1, 2010 >>
The U.S. Department of Justice announced June 28 that an FBI counterintelligence investigation had resulted in the arrest on June 27 of 10 individuals suspected of acting as undeclared agents of a foreign country, in this case, Russia. Eight of the individuals were also accused of money laundering. On June 28, five of the defendants appeared before a federal magistrate in U.S. District Court in Manhattan while three others went before a federal magistrate in Alexandria, Va., and two more went before a U.S. magistrate in Boston. An 11th person named in the criminal complaint was arrested in Cyprus on June 29, posted bail and is currently at large.>>
The number of arrested suspects in this case makes this counterintelligence investigation one of the biggest in U.S. history. According to the criminal complaint, the FBI had been investigating some of these people for as long as 10 years, recording conversations in their homes, intercepting radio and electronic messages and conducting surveillance on them in and out of the United States. The case suggests that the classic tactics of intelligence gathering and counterintelligence are still being used by Russia and the United States. Read more » >>

INN Interviews Aaron Klein, "The Manchurian President" author

    by Fern Sidman

Released in May of this year by WND Books, "The Manchurian President" has been both embraced by political Obama has an "Israel problem". He has a real issue with the Jewish state.

conservatives and repudiated by Obama apologists in progressive enclaves. Listed as number 23 on The New York Times non-fiction bestseller list as of June 27th, this account of President Obama's ties to radical left-wing extremists represents the latest work of former INN writer, investigative journalist and WABC radio talk show host, Aaron Klein.

    INN
's New York Correspondent and writer for The Jewish Voice, Fern Sidman, sat down with Mr. Klein to discuss his new book.

FS: Concerning your latest book, "The Manchurian President: Barack Obama's Ties to Communists, Socialists and other Anti-American Extremists", what served as the inspiration for you and Brenda J Elliott to collaborate on such a monumental investigative task?

AK: I was inspired to undertake this task because so few reporters were conducting any real investigation into Barack Obama's background.

I reported in February of 2008 that Obama was tied to Weather Underground criminal/terrorist Bill Ayers. When I did a Google search to see if any other reporters or media outlets had uncovered this information, I was stunned to find that they had not. After all, it is the responsibility of the media to engage in a vetting process of sorts when it pertains to presidential candidates. Based on my research, it was clear to me that Obama had a long relationship with Ayers and Ayers even gave Obama his first job at the Chicago Annenberg Challenge.

They also served together, in the 1990s on the board of the Woods Fund; a non-profit organization that funneled money to leftist causes including the Midwest Academy that practiced Alinsky-like tactics of working within the capitalist system in order to overthrow it. What really served as the impetus for me to write this book was the lack of any real independent investigative journalism on the part of the mainstream media, as it pertained to Obama's past.

FS: As you previously mentioned to Sean Hannity on FOX News, President Obama was not forthright in his book concerning his first boss who he claimed was Marty Kaufman. Since no such person exists, and the person to whom he referred was Gerald "Jerry" Kellman, what connections does Kellman currently have with this administration?

AK: While Jerry Kellman may not have ties to the administration, it is clear that Obama apparently deliberately disguised the fact in his autobiography that he was given a job at the Alliance for Better Chicago Schools or ABC's by someone he claimed was Marty Kaufman, who in fact does not exist. Rather, he was referring to Jerry Kellman, who is an avowed Marxist and a stalwart acolyte of Saul Alinksy, the radical community organizer. Obama also disguises other names in his so-called autobiography, "Dreams From My Father", and neglects to mention that his childhood mentor was another Communist agitator named Frank Marshall Davis. Very little information was known about Obama other than what he had penned in his book. All of this information should be considered a major political scandal and the fact that he changed the names in his book should be challenged.

FS: Why do you think the mainstream media did not scrutinize Obama's background and ties to extremists and why do you think he was not carefully vetted by the Democratic party?

AK: I think the mainstream media promotes the same kinds of policies that Obama is espousing. He is the kind of candidate that they've been wishing for and hoping for. He is their dream come true.

The Democratic Party did not carefully vet him because even those in his own presidential campaign such as David Plauth, who made a lot of Obama's videos, admitted that he didn't check out his background and was unaware of his affiliation for over 22 years with Rev Jeremiah Wright's church and black liberation theology. The party betrays it's past and it's roots by remaining indifferent to the polemical aspects of Obama's career. Obama has been pushing for the very same policies that the mainstream media itself that has been advocating for years and now they have this candidate named Obama so of course they're not going to investigate him in any serious way. To them these issues are not scandals. The media has been promoting Bill Ayers and other radical leftists and the causes that Obama has been representing for years, so this comes as no surprise.

FS: Your book sheds light on the sketchy details surrounding Obama's college days. What were his political leanings during his years at Occidental College and Columbia University and was he under the tutelage of Marxist mentors and professors?

AK: As to Obama's college days, no official or unofficial records were ever made available to the media. No college transcripts, published records, or even contemporary newspaper announcements about his education have been released. Obama remarkably relates in his autobiography "Dreams from My Father" that, beginning at Occidental, he surrounded himself with an assortment of radicals, socialists, Marxist-Leninists, Maoists and communists. Obama, however, provides neither names nor clues.

It was at Occidental that Obama first engaged in community activism, delivering what has been described as the first political speech of his career. On Feb. 18, 1981, Obama addressed students gathered outside Coons Hall administration building, exhorting Occidental's trustees to divest from South Africa. Obama writes in "Dreams" about the rally in which he took part, reportedly led by the Black Student Alliance and Students for Economic Democracy. Students for Economic Democracy, or SED, was a national student advocacy group established by soon-to-be California State Representative Tom Hayden, now a professor at Occidental, and his former wife, actress Jane Fonda.

FS: As to Israel, the Middle East and relations with the Muslim world, many people feel Obama has coddled our Islamic terrorist enemies such as Iran, and their proxies Hamas and Hezbollah. In a recent article (June 15) by Jerusalem Post reporter, Caroline Glick, she writes:

"It is not surprising that Obama is siding with Hamas. His close associates are leading members of the pro-Hamas Free Gaza outfit. Obama's friends, former Weatherman Underground terrorists Bernadine Dohrn and William Ayres participated in a Free Gaza trip to Egypt in January. Their aim was to force the Egyptians to allow them into Gaza with 1,300 fellow Hamas supporters. Their mission was led by Code Pink leader and Obama fundraiser Jodie Evans. Another leading member of Free Gaza is former US senator from South Dakota James Abourezk."
What are your comments on this?

AK: As I reported back in January of this year, Bernadine Dohrn and Bill Ayers along with Code Pink's Jodie Evans were in the forefront of fomenting chaos on the streets of Egypt in an attempt to enter Gaza with the Free Gaza Movement to join in solidarity with the territory's population and leadership.

The three helped to stir riots after the Egyptian government refused to allow a large number of protesters to enter neighboring Gaza. Eventually, the protesters accepted an Egyptian offer of allowing about 100 marchers into Gaza. Once in the territory, those marchers were reportedly met on the Gaza side by Hamas' former Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh.

Clearly, President Obama's associates have helped shape his adversarial stance towards Israel, but he has a history of political leanings towards Hamas. In the 1990s, Obama spoke at pro-Palestinian events alongside Ali Abunimah, who was with Evans' group in Egypt, and who runs the web site called "Electronic Intifada" which spreads anti-Israel propaganda. In one such event, a 1999 fundraiser for Palestinian "refugees," Abunimah recalled introducing Obama on stage.

Obama, like most leftists, believes that all conflicts can be resolved through dialogue and negotiations, which is why I believe he is coddling Iran in part. He is advancing and agitating for policies that help Hamas and we might see in the future even the White House eventually opening channels with Hamas because they believe that Hamas can be talked out of their extremism-- that is patently ridiculous. I know many Hamas leaders and have interviewed them and they are looking to spread their brand of Islam around the world and it's not like we can talk them out of it or talk them into peace negotiations.

Obama has an "Israel problem". He has a real issue with the Jewish state. This is evidenced by his radical affiliations with such people as Rashid Khalidi, the pro-PLO Columbia University professor and others like him.

FS: Can you shed some light on whom, in the Obama administration, were significant figures in pushing a socialist domestic agenda including the national health care reform bill?

AK: As I reveal in my book, a convicted felon named Robert Creamer who is the husband of Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., who was one of Capitol Hill's most visible cheerleaders for Obama's health-care bill is the one who helped provide a blueprint for the president's health-care legislation. Creamer said his declared strategies on health-care reform are not about "policies" but "are about the distribution of wealth and power." Creamer also recommended the president "create" a national consensus that the country's health-care system is in a state of crisis in order to push a radical new health-care plan.

Creamer was sentenced to federal prison in 2006 after pleading guilty to bank fraud and withholding taxes while heading Citizen Action of Illinois. While in prison, he wrote a book titled "How Progressives Can Win." Obama's chief adviser, David Axelrod, touted Creamer's book as providing "a blueprint for future victories," including on health care. His book was endorsed by other leading Democrats and by Andy Stern, a close ally of the president who as head of the Service Employees International Union had visited the White House more than any other individual.

FS: You write quite extensively on the role of the SEIU, AFSCME, the AFL-CIO, and of course ACORN in their support for President Obama.

Can you tell us if the leadership and rank and file of these unions call for a Socialist and/or Communist agenda and what role, if any, they play in helping to craft legislation?

AK: For example, one of Obama's close advisors is Eliseo Medina, the international executive vice-president of Service Employees International Union, or SEIU. Medina is in the forefront of spearheading legislation that would grant citizenship to millions of illegal immigrants, with the stated objective being the expansion of the "progressive" electorate that would help to ensure a "progressive" governing coalition for the long term. The SEIU is closely linked to the controversial Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN and they are top supporters of Illinois Rep. Luis Gutierrez's Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America's Security and Prosperity Bill, which seeks to document up to 12 million illegal immigrants inside the U.S.

During the most recent presidential campaign, Medina and Gutierrez served on Obama's National Latino Advisory Council. Also on the council was Rep. Nydia Velazquez, D-N.Y., the co-sponsor of Gutierrez's immigration reform bill. Medina was a chief lobbyist credited with a change in the longstanding policy of the AFL-CIO, the largest union federation in the U.S. The union reversed its stance against illegal immigration in February 2000, instead calling for new amnesty for millions of illegals. The New Zeal blog documents how Medina was honored in 2004 by Chicago's Democratic Socialists of America for his "vital role in the AFL-CIO's reassessment of its immigration policy." That same year, Medina became a DSA honorary chairman. The DSA also supported Gutierrez's 1998 bid for Congress. In the mid-1990s, Gutierrez served on the board of Illinois Public Action alongside a number of DSA members, including Obama health-care advisor Quentin Young.

FS: Can you elaborate on David Axelrod's Communist background that you extensively explore in your book?

AK: David Axelrod was mentored by Don Rose, a founder of the pro-Communist publication called "Hyde Park Voices" and who, in the 1960s, was a member of a purported Communist Party front called the Alliance to End Repression. Axelrod began his professional career as a journalist with this paper. Rose also worked with the late David S. Canter, who was the co-founder of the Voices newspaper and was named as a communist in the late 1960s by the House Committee on Un-American Activities. In my book, I document the fact that Rose had written to Marc Canter, the son of the late David Canter and said, "Your dad and I 'mentored' and helped educate Axelrod politically, which is perhaps why you may recall seeing him hanging around the house."

In 1987, Axelrod was hired to help in the re-election campaign of Harold Washington, Chicago's first black mayor, where he once again worked with Rose and Canter. It should be noted that Washington's campaign was supported by a coalition of communist and socialist groups.

FS: Will you be speaking about this book on college campuses throughout North America?

AK: I will not be focusing on a speaking tour right now but will be putting my efforts into a media tour to help promote the book.

'1000s' of Russian spies in U.S., surpassing Cold War record

The Russians are coming? The Russians are here.

America is infested with more Russian spies than at any point in history, say former intelligence agents who spoke with The Post.

"I would say there are a few thousand here," said Boris Korczak, a former double agent who worked for the CIA, spying on the KGB from 1973-1980.

That's because each mole is a long shot, and the Russians want to maximize their odds. "Out of 1,000 spies, one or two will perform, will get access to our nuclear secrets," Korczak said.

"The current atmosphere in the US is that we're having a love affair with Russia, that the Cold War is over," agreed Eugene Poteat, a retired senior CIA operative who served from 1960-1990. "But there are more Russian spies here now than during the Cold War."

Among the 10 accused Russian spies taken into custody last week is Anna Chapman, 28, a flame-haired bombshell who, unsurprisingly, has attracted the most attention. She is currently being held in solitary confinement in a federal prison in Brooklyn and her lawyer, Robert Baum, told The Post that she is "very unaware" of the media frenzy she's sparked.

Chapman, a Russian native who once said her father was a high-ranking member of the KGB, spent her time in New York City circulating among rich and powerful men. In 2002, she married a British student named Alex Chapman, now 30. They divorced in 2006, after she began spending a lot of time without him and with her "Russian friends" instead.

Once in New York, she allegedly began dating a politically connected businessman from New Jersey named Michael Bittan. He refused to comment.

Chapman, who dressed in designer clothes, drank in swank downtown spots such as the Thompson Hotel, had her hair dyed red every week (she's a natural brunette) and got frequent mani-pedis, was suspected by acquaintances of working as a hooker to fund her expensive tastes.

Korczak believes that Chapman (real name: Anya Kuschenko) was likely schooled by the SVR -- Russia's post-KGB intelligence agency -- in the art of seduction.

During the Cold War, "the Soviet Union had a number of schools that trained beautiful women how to lure and satisfy powerful, rich, American men, sexually and intellectually," he said.

    "They're called 'worm-on-a-hook' agents."

SOME of these schools are located in small towns in the southern part of the country. None appear on a map. They are exact replicas of American suburbs such as Chevy Chase, Md. -- just outside Washington, where the bulk of KGB agents were deployed during World War II.

Russian spies-in-training in these towns, Korczak said, "buy groceries at 7-Elevens, eat hamburgers at McDonald's, watch American TV and go to American movie theaters, get American newspapers delivered every morning and speak only English."

Once a spy seems suitably Americanized, they are sent to a way station -- usually Finland or the Netherlands -- where they attempt to pass as American. If they do, they are sent to the United States, almost always as sleepers.

"The Russians are very patient," Korczak said. "My experience with the CIA was, 'It has to be here, now, and make a big splash.' The Russians will wait 15, 20 years -- whatever."

This, he said, explains why the busted ring seems to have accomplished very little in the way of espionage.

"The SVR's goals are planned and scheduled," Korczak said. "Those spies would have been able to achieve what they were sent here for -- to obtain technology and military secrets, to exert influence on American policy and policymakers. They were well on their way."

The activities of this ring were so low-key that their objectives seem murky and esoteric.

One couple, Richard and Cynthia Murphy, lived quietly in Montclair, NJ; one alleged spy, Juan Lazario of Yonkers, worked as an economics professor. Another couple, Donald Heathfield and Tracey Foley, even registered to vote last year in Massachusetts, according to the Boston Globe.

None was part of any power clique in New York or DC.

What kind of critical national intelligence is to be gained from going to luncheons at Christie's auction house, as Chapman did? Or by getting your MBA at Columbia, as Cynthia Murphy, 35, did?

The alleged operatives' normalcy and low-key methodology is in stark contrast to Russian spycraft during World War II, epitomized by the high-profile Alger Hiss and Julius and Ethel Rosenberg cases. The OSS -- America's precursor to the CIA -- was infiltrated by Russian spies; Stalin knew that we had the atomic bomb before Truman did.

Today's SVR, however, is preoccupied with lesser goals. "These people are here to be agents of influence, to make connections," Poteat said. "You want to influence American policy and opinion, including opinions about Russia."

Also, Korczak said, being a spy is never as thrilling as it seems in the movies: "There are no casinos, no money, [few] beautiful women," he said. "There is no James Bond. It's not glamorous at all."

One accused ring member worked as an op-ed columnist for El Diario, which Poteat said shows how forward-thinking the SVR is. "We're being flooded with Spanish-speaking people," he said. "The technique they're using now is as valid as it was during the Cold War."

Korczak, however, said that this ring "was a very primitively organized group of people. Anna Chapman was a newbie here. She couldn't do any damage."

Chapman kept up a Facebook page with no privacy controls and once filled out a form for a cellphone with the address "99 Fake Street."

Poteat's a bit more forgiving: "They're not perfect, are they?" he said.

WHAT the Russians are primarily after, both experts believe, is our technology. Their own is not much better than it was during the Cold War, when, Poteat said, "you had to get a permit if you wanted to buy a computer or a telephone."

For this reason, Russian spies are also heavily deployed in Japan: "Technology, technology, technology," said Korczak.

Britain, France, Poland and Israel are other high priorities, and the Russians are most interested in American policy towards Iran and Israel. As for Iraq and Afghanistan, the Russians "look favorably on our adventures there," said Korczak, because of what those wars are costing America in blood and treasure.

What the Russians really want, said Korczak, is for America "to break up into three different countries, to stop existing as a superpower."

"They think we want to kill them," said Poteat. "Now that Poland is free and looking to the West, they're scared. They think our anti-ballistic missile system is about getting missiles closer to them. It's irrational. But then again, they're irrational people."

Both said that the United States still shouldn't discount the sophisticated, worldwide network that is the SVR. This week's disappearance of alleged paymaster Christopher Robert Metsos from Cyprus, after he was freed on bail, "shows how well Russian intelligence is organized," Korczak said. "He couldn't have done it without help."

As for what will become of Chapman and her alleged co-conspirators, Poteat and Korczak believe it will be very little. The only crime with which they've been charged so far is failure to register as a foreign intelligence agent, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison. After that, they'll probably be thrown out of the country.

And then, said Korczak, "it will go on and on, as it has since the Chinese invented [espionage] thousands of years ago. We'll spy on them, and they'll spy on us."

    David Axelrod

    Alternative transliteration(s) and/or alias(es):
Either because of alternative transliterations from Hebrew/Arabic/Cyrillic into English
or for some other reason, this person is also known by the following names:

    David Akselrod
    David Ha'ivri (Haivri)

David Axelrod is a member of the banned right-wing Kahane Chai organization. He has been convicted, by an Israeli court, of terrorism.
Axelrod also goes by the name of David Ha'ivri -- Ha'ivri means "the crosser–over" or "the one who stands on the other side".

Born (1961) in the USSR (but taken by his mother to the US in mid-1979), Axelrod is a great-grandson of Leon Trotsky. His mother, Yulia Akselrod, was the daughter of Trotsky's second son, Sergei Sedov.

Axelrod's wife, Molly, is the sister of the late Talia Kahane who was married to Benjamin Kahane, the son of the infamous Meir Kahane.

Axelrod's relationship to Trotsky is as follows:

    • Trotsky's second "life-partner" (he never divorced his wife) was Natalia Ivanovna Sedova (1882-1962)
    • Their second son was Sergei (or, Seresha) L'vovich Sedov (1908-1937) -- their children used their mother's surname;
    • Sergei Sedov was married twice, the second time to Genrietta M. Rubinshteina (died 1987 in Tallinn). They had one daughter, Juliia Sergeevna Sedova (b. 1936); in 2006, Juliia was living in the USA as Yulia Akselrod.
    • Juliia Sergeevna Sedova m. Akselrod. They had one son, David Akselrod (b. 1961)

was a Ukrainian-born Bolshevik revolutionary and Marxist theorist. He was one of the leaders of the Russian October Revolution, second only to Lenin. During the early days of the Soviet Union, he served first as People's Commissar for Foreign Affairs and later as the founder and commander of the Red Army and People's Commissar of War. He was also among the first members of the Politburo.

After leading the failed struggle of the Left Opposition against the policies and rise of Joseph Stalin in the 1920s and the increasing bureaucratization of the Soviet Union, Trotsky was expelled from the Communist Party and deported from the Soviet Union. As the head of the Fourth International, he continued in exile to oppose the Stalinist bureaucracy in the Soviet Union, and was eventually assassinated in Mexico by Ramón Mercader, a Soviet agent.[1] Trotsky's ideas form the basis of Trotskyism, a term coined as early as 1905 by his opponents in order to separate it from Marxism. Trotsky’s ideas remain a major school of Marxist thought that is opposed to the theories of Stalinism.
