Default Large Hadron Collider physicists claim energy world record + Norway Lights?

Very interesting timing, wouldn't you say?

be sure to check out the Youtube vids of the Norway lights. It's real.

Scientists claimed a world record by crashing particles together at the highest energy achieved in a laboratory. Physicists at the Cern nuclear research organisation near Geneva working on the Large Hadron Collider recorded head-on collisions between beams of protons at an energy of 2.36 trillion electron volts. The machine is designed to recreate the conditions in the moments after the big bang. Scientists hope it will help them to identify the Higgs boson, which gives other particles mass, and reveal the nature of dark matter, the invisible substance that clusters around galaxies.

Mystery as spiral blue light display hovers above Norway

By Mail Foreign Service and Will Stewart
Last updated at 5:00 PM on 09th December 2009

A mysterious light display appearing over Norway last night has left thousands of residents in the north of the country baffled.

Witnesses from Trøndelag to Finnmark compared the amazing sight to anything from a Russian rocket to a meteor or a shock wave - although no one appears to have mentioned UFOs yet.

The phenomenon began when what appeared to be a blue light seemed to soar up from behind a mountain. It stopped mid-air, then began to circulate.

Strange spiral: Residents in northern Norway were left stunned after the lightshow, which almost looked computer-generated, appeared in the skies above them

Curious: A blue-green beam of light was reported to have come shooting out the centre of the spiral
Within seconds a giant spiral had covered the entire sky. Then a green-blue beam of light shot out from its centre - lasting for ten to twelve minutes before disappearing completely.

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute was flooded with telephone calls after the light storm - which astronomers have said did not appear to have been connected to the aurora, or Northern Lights, so common in that area of the world.
The mystery deepened tonight as Russia denied it had been conducting missile tests in the area.

Fred Hansen, from Bø in Vesterålen, described the sight as 'like a big fireball that went around, with a great light around it again.'

Confusion: The Norwegian Meteorological Institute was flooded with calls after the light storm
'It spun and exploded in the sky,' Totto Eriksen from Tromsø told VG Nett.
He spotted the lights as he walked his daughter Amalie to school.

He said: 'We saw it from the Inner Harbor in Tromsø. It was absolutely fantastic.

'It almost looked like a rocket that spun around and around and then went diagonally down the heavens.

'It looked like the moon was coming over the mountain, but then came something completely different.'

What could it be? Astronomers say the spectacle did not appear to have been connected to the aurora, or Northern Lights
'It was like a giant spiral - a shooting star that spun around and around. I initially thought it was a projector', added Axel Rose Berg, from Alta.

Celebrity astronomer Knut Jørgen Røed Ødegaard told VG Nett he had never seen anything like the lights.

He said: 'My first thought was that it was a fireball meteor, but it has lasted far too long.
'It may have been a missile in Russia, but I can not guarantee that it is the answer.'

Air Traffic control in Tromsø claimed the light show lasted for two minutes, but admitted that was 'far too long to be an astronomical phenomena.'

Tromsø Geophysical Observatory researcher Truls Lynne Hansen was certain the light had been caused by a missile launch.

He told Norwegian media that the missile had likely lost control and exploded. The spiral, he claimed, was the result of light reflecting on the leaking fuel. He was quoted as saying the light was sunlight, despite the strange lights showing up at night.

The Barents Observer quoted Norwegian Defence spokesman Jon Espen Lien as saying that the Norwegian military does not know what the lights were - but that they were probably from a Russian missile.

He said it was normal for Russia to use the White Sea and the Barents Sea as a testing ground for missiles.

However a Moscow news outlet tonight quoted the Russian Navy as denying any rocket launches from the White Sea area.

Norway should be informed of such launches under international agreements, it was stressed.

The Russian Defence Ministry was unavailable for comment last night.

Mysterious light appears over Norway before Obama Peace Prize speech

December 9, 8:42 AMHonolulu Exopolitics ExaminerMichael Salla, Ph.D.

A mysterious spiral of light has appeared in northern Norway one day before President Obama arrives to give his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech in Oslo. The spiral has baffled experts who do not believe it is related to the Aurora Borealis. Speculation that it is a rocket launched by the Russian Northern Fleet has been denied by Russian authorities. Similarly the Norwegian military has claimed no knolwedge of any rocket launches in the area. There has been speculation that it may be some exotic weapon system, the opening of a space-time portal, or even UFO activity. Obama’s arrival in Norway on December 10 to give his acceptance speech only adds to the mysterious appearance of the lights. Is it a pure coincidence or is it in some way related to Obama’s upcoming speech?

The object appeared on the morning of December 9 and has been photographed and filmed by thousands of Norwegians over a wide area ranging from Finnmark in the country’s north to Trondelang in the south. It is a giant spiral of green-blue light that appears directed towards a mountain. According to observers, a giant light spiral appeared and within seconds covered the entire sky. A green-blue beam of light then shot out from its center. Here is how Totto Eriksen, from Tromso, in northern Norway described it.

I was driving my daughter to school when this light spun and exploded in the sky. We saw it from the Inner Harbour in Tromso. It looked like a rocket that spun around and around - and then went diagonally across the heavens. It looked like the moon was coming over the mountain - but then turned into something totally different. People just stopped and stared on the pier - it was like something from a Hollywood movie.

The entire event lasted between two-three minutes before disappearing. Norway’s leading meteorologists are baffled, with most concluding it is some kind of rocket launch that went awry. Knut Jorgen Roed Odegaard, Norway's most celebrated astronomer, said:
This was seen over an exceptionally large area of the country - in all of north Norway and the Trondelag. My first thought was that it was a fireball meteor - but it lasted far too long. It may have been a missile from Russia - but I can't guarantee that is the answer. I rang the Air Traffic Control tower in Tromse. They said it was over in two minutes. To me, that is far too long for this to be an astronomical phenomenon. This spiral shape is unique. It is definitely not a variation of the aurora borealis - northern lights.

Obama’s December 10 Nobel Prize acceptance speech is expected to focus on international cooperation on the removal of nuclear weapons and promoting diplomatic solutions to global problems. Coming nine days after Obama’s announcement of a 30,000 troop surge for Afghanistan, it is expected that he will show his commitment to international diplomacy and cooperation. He may use the opportunity to launch a bold international initiative to achieve this end.

The appearance of the enormous light spiral in northern Norway may be a sheer coincidence and unrelated to his upcoming speech in Oslo. Alternatively, the mysterious spiral of light may be a sign from an unknown intelligence that Obama’s acceptance speech may be a catalyst for major global changes that lie ahead. With much speculation that the Obama administration is poised to make some kind of announcement concerning extraterrestrial life soon, the light may be sign for him to boldly go where no U.S. President has gone before.

Mysterious Light Display Leaves Norwegians and Astronomers Puzzled

A Russian missile test or a meteor remain the top guesses for a strange spiraling light phenomenon

Strange Norwegian Lights: Rocket gone awry, or the something scarier? Rex Features/Daily Mail

A bizarre spiraling light show over Norway has raised speculations ranging from a Russian rocket test to an odd meteoric display. The Norwegian Meteorological Institute remains unsure of the phenomenon's origins, but astronomers have said that it does not appear connected to the Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights.

A blue light first appeared from behind a mountain, and created a giant spiral in the sky within seconds. Perhaps even more baffling, a green-blue beam of light appeared to shoot from the center. The entire display remained in the sky for a good ten to twelve minutes--enough time for photographers across Norway to shoot hundreds of images and capture video:

Universe Today raises the possibility that the spiraling pattern represents a tumbling rocket stage spewing fuel. But Russia denied having conducted missile tests in the area.

We're still betting on some rocket test gone awry, or else a really far-out art display by a guerilla artiste with a penchant for science. Inter-dimensional research or the beginning stages of an alien invasion remain farther down the probability list.

Neither meteorologists, astronomers, or the Armed Forces have offered a solution to the matter.

The light was captured by amateur photographer Jan Petter Jorgensen while he was on his way to work at a salmon factory.

"The light appeared for 2-3 minutes. I could not believe my eyes, and got the shivers and was quite shaken by it", Mr Jorgensen said.

Morten Kristiansen, who saw the light phenomena from Sortland in northern Norway, added: " A large ring appeared, and then spread out, sending a green beam down to earth, "says

Weird Giant Spiral Seen in Sky over Norway

Apparently, this is not a Photoshopped image, as there are several more just like it, taken from various locations. This morning in northern Norway, people saw a strange light in the sky which shocked residents and so far, the phenomenon has yet to be explained. This picture was taken from a pier, looking to the east, approximately at 07.50 am local time. "I can imagine that it went on for two, three minutes," said the photographer Jan Petter Jørgensen. "It was unbelievable. I was quite shaken when I saw it."
The spiral as seen over Borras, Norway. Via Altaposten.no

"It consisted initially of a green beam of light similar in colour to the aurora with a mysterious rotating spiral at one end," said another eyewitness, Nick Banbury of Harstad, quoted on Spaceweather.com.earth "This spiral then got bigger and bigger until it turned into a huge halo in the sky with the green beam extending down to the . According to the press, this could be seen all over northern norway and must therefore have been very high up in the atmosphere to be seen hundreds of km apart."

Here's a link to a video of the spiral forming.

"[A popular] suggestion at the moment is that it was a rocket shot up by a Russian submarine in the White Sea, but the Russians deny this apparently. A big mystery indeed!"

According to NRK, there were advance warnings about several Russian missile launches from the White Sea from December 7-10, but an anonymous source in the Northern Fleet said they had no information about the incident. Press Attaché from Russia’s Embassy in Oslo, Vladimir Isupov, did not have any immediate information that could explain the light phenomenon over Northern Norway.

UPDATE: Doug Ellison from UnmannedSpaceflight.com did a very cool simulation of a tumbling rocket stage throwing out unspent fuel in two directions, and what it would look like. The question, though would be how the spiral of fuel was lit. It possibly could have been back-lit by the soon-to-rise sun.

Another eyewitness said, "We saw it from the Inner Harbor in Tromsø. It was absolutely fantastic. It almost looked like a rocket that spun around and around, and then went diagonally down the heavens. It looked like the moon was coming over the mountain, but then came something completely different, "said Totto Eriksen.

We'll keep you posted on any explanations that come out on this!

I also received a report today from a geophysicist in Papua, Indonesia who observed "an enormous flare (bolide?) visible here at Tomage (2°39'27"S 132°59'27"E), and the sighting was at a bearing approximately 165 (East of South) and the flare seemed to begin at about 30 degrees above the horizon." Paul Anderson said the date and time of the flare was approximately 2009.12.09 12:39 UTC

"I have seen meteors all my life but this was extraordinarily bright and lit up the sky. Not sure what the trajectory was aside from a slight (15 degrees, perhaps) trend to the West but this should probably be known
somewhere. My guess is it entered steeply from the North," he said.

Anyone else in or near Indonesia see anything similar?

Failed missile launch caused strange light over Northern Norway

    2009-12-09

UPDATED: A strange spiral light was visible in the eastern sky over large areas of Northern Norway this morning. Norwegian space and defense experts believe that this was a failed Russian missile launch from the White Sea.

The giant spiral shaped light that could be seen in the eastern sky for several minutes on Wednesday morning was probably caused by a failed missile launch from the White Sea, several Norwegian space and defense experts believe.

Interviewed by the Norwegian TV2, an anonymous Russian military source says it was failed launch of a Bulava missile from a submarine in the White Sea Wednesday morning.
Researcher at the Tromsø Geophysical Observatory Truls Lynne Hansen is certain that the light was caused by a missile launch:

    - The missile has probably come out of control and exploded. The peculiar spiral shaped light pattern comes from reflection of the sun in the leaking fuel, he said to Aftenposten.

Spokesman in the Norwegian Defense Jon Espen Lien says that the Norwegian Defense does not know for sure what the light was, but that it probably was a Russian missile:
    - It is quite normal that Russia uses the White Sea and the Barents Sea as testing grounds for weapons.

According to NRK, Arkhangelsk Radio sent out an advance warning about several missile launches from the White Sea in the period December 7-10.The warning included launches on the night to Wednesday. An anonymous source in the Northern Fleet told Norwegian news paper VG that they had no information about the incident. Press Attaché at Russia’s Embassy in Oslo Vladimir Isupov did neither have any that could explain the light phenomenon over Northern Norway.

On the morning of November 1, another strange light phenomenon was visible in the sky from large areas of the northern parts of Norway. This incident also caused commotion and many creative explanations to the light were given on different discussion boards. The light was caused by a launch of a Sineva missile from the nuclear submarine “Bryansk” in White Sea, as reported by BarentsObserver.

According to a warning about rocket launching in the White Sea, navigation is prohibited in the southern parts of the sea until December 15.

*I* couldn't see any images in the first post. Sorry, I wanted to see what it was all about.

My take? A rocket that failed (check the last post I made) and it spiraled out of control. The spiral is the sun reflecting on fuel or other exhaust. The time this occurred was around 7 AM it APPEARS from some of the documented images I am seeing here.

I might be wrong, but I agree Mal, a rocket launch - but one that went badly.

All the UFO people are screaming on the boards how "they are HERE!".

    /sigh

I want to SEE an alien step out of a space craft before I say "they are here". Or at least beam down in front of me - assuming they are friendly.

I would assume they are too, because they aren't bombing us from space....

Russisk rakettsmell synlig i hele Nord-Norge Eksperter er sikre på at en havarert russisk rakett var kilden til det spektakulære lysfenomenet som kunne sees fra Nord-Trøndelag til Finnmark onsdag morgen.
Russian rocket pops visible throughout North Norway Experts are confident that a sunken Russian missile was the source of the spectacular lysfenomenet that could be seen from the Nord-Trøndelag to Finnmark Wednesday morning.

Den spiralformede lyshalen som gikk fra blått til hvit var synlig i flere minutter.
The helical lyshalen that went from blue to white was visible for several minutes.
    - Was notified Senior Advisor Paal Brekke of the Norwegian Space Center told NTB that by all accounts the lysspiralen stems from a rocket that was launched from a vessel in the White Sea in Russia, and that something has gone wrong during or shortly after launch. - The launch was announced in advance. A message on a web site for amateur radio refers to a notice of prohibition to navigate on the White Sea in the period in question, "said Brekke. He has studied video images of lysfenomenet and concluded that the spiral shape and speed indicate that something has gone wrong with the rocket.

    Probably exploded

    - It is a little like a New Year's rocket where the stylus falls off. It will often end up in a spiral motion. There was however a fantastic spectacular sight, and not something that should worry us particularly. The Russians train and practice is nothing new, "says Brekke.

Also researcher Truls Lynne Hansen at the Auroral Observatory in Tromsø says it is about a missile that was launched from the White Sea.

    - The rocket is probably out of control and exploded. The special helical lysmønsteret is because the sun was shining on the fuel that leaked out, "he says to NRK.

Yep, it is beginning to look like a failed rocket launch from Russia. Specifically a sub-launched missile.

    An interesting link.

    The likely missile that failed.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSM-56_Bulava#2009

    ...2009

In February it was announced that the flight-tests would be resumed in March 2009.[18] This was later delayed to June 2009.[19] On July 15 a new test was conducted, ending in another failure when the missile's first stage malfunctioned shortly after launch. Later it was announched that the Russian Defense Ministry's naval commission would investigate the failure.[20][21] Later a defence industry source claimed that the failure was caused by a defective steering system in the missiles first rocket stage.[22]
In the last days of October 2009 another launch reportedly failed when the missile did not leave the launch tube, according to an anonymous source[who?] quoted by AFP.[citation needed] However, according to other sources, "the launch was tentatively scheduled for November 24 but has been postponed to the end of 2009. Apparently there was another test on December 9th 2009, which spectacularly failed and caused huge excitement in Norway, from where the event could be observed as a spiral forming light."[23] ....

Russian Nuclear Missile Test Fails, Visible In Norway
    By REUTERS
    Published: December 10, 2009
    Filed at 8:22 a.m. ET

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia admitted on Thursday another failed test of its much-touted Bulava intercontinental missile, after unusual lights were spotted in Norway across the border from the launch site.

The submarine-based Bulava (Mace) missile has been billed as Russia's newest technological breakthrough to support its nuclear deterrent, but the repeated test failures are an embarrassment for the Kremlin.

The missile failed in its 13th test on Wednesday morning, Russia's leading economic dailies Vedomosti and Kommersant reported on Thursday, quoting sources in the military-industrial complex.

Hours later, the Defense Ministry admitted the failure, saying the launch had been made by the Dmitry Donskoi nuclear submarine from a submerged position in the White Sea.

"It has been established ... that the missile's first two stages worked as normal, but there was a technical malfunction at the next, third, stage of the trajectory," a Defense Ministry spokesman said.

Norwegian experts reported sighting of phenomena in the atmosphere near the White Sea, where earlier Bulava rockets were fired, the Kommersant and Vedomosti newspapers reported.

Russia's REN-TV showed footage of a spiral of white light, which it said was taken on Wednesday in Norway. The footage also showed a bright white light with a long blue tail on the horizon.

    MISTAKE OR CRIME?

Staking heavily on the Bulava, the Kremlin also has overseen a costly project aimed at building a new class of nuclear submarines to carry the missile -- the Borei (Arctic Wind).

The first submarine of the class -- Yuri Dolgoruky -- for months has been undergoing sea tests, while two others are being built. The laying of the keel for a submarine of the more advanced Borei-A class is reported to be set by year's end.

"This is a catastrophe ... Huge funds were siphoned off from Russia's moribund navy for the Bulava project. In fact, billions of dollars have been flushed down the drain," Alexander Khramchikhin, chief analyst at the Moscow-based Institute of Military and Political Analysis, said.

Of 11 previous reported tests, at least six have been unsuccessful, including one on July 15 when a Bulava self destructed after a malfunction during the first stage of its flight from the White Sea.

Later media reports said there also had been an attempt to launch the Bulava in October but it was put off at the last moment due to a technical glitch.

The 37-tonne, 12-meter (39-ft) intercontinental ballistic missile, known as the Bulava-30 inside the Russian military, is capable of carrying multiple warheads to the distances of up to 8,000 km (5,000 miles). Some sources say the Bulava can carry up to six warheads, others say 10.

The Kremlin has touted the missile as a unique weapon capable of breaching any air defense and a way to bolster the country's once mighty submarine fleet.
Analysts criticize Moscow's hurry to build the Bulava, as it already has a highly reliable Soviet-built Sineva submarine-based ballistic missile.

They also question awarding the Bulava contract to the Moscow Institute of Thermal Technology which has never before built missiles for submarines.

Darn, they can't launch a missile and make it work... too bad.

And folks want to believe them? LOL

As far as the lights in Norway are concerned, it's clear to me Dr.s Newman and Phillips are still out there, trying to find their way back to the present. Or would that be 1966-67 for their destination?
